Saturday may be the final regular season game of the season, but the Ole Miss ticket office is far from being done with their job. Selling tickets to athletic events is non stop. Season ticket sales for football

actually started in January and in a few weeks, work will gear up towards the 2017 season.

Matt Cook is the Manager of Ticket Operations at Ole Miss and he said the front end work for next year's ticket sales will begin in December and January. All the way through August, when fans get their

'Country' Graham made sure gridiron Rebels never lost to State

Before every college football game was on television each Saturday, coaches had to rely on their staff to help scout a team. The plan to defeat a bitter rival often depended on the acumen of at top assistant. In the case of Ole Miss head coach Johnny Vaught, the man he trusted to give him the most accurate details on the Mississippi State Bulldogs was the man they called “Country.”

Bonnie Lee, or B. L. Graham may have been the head basketball coach for the Rebels, but during the fall, he was the man who traveled to every single game the Bulldogs played.

The Baldwyn native did this for years and every town the Bulldogs stopped, Graham was right there, in the stands, watching. By the time the annual Egg Bowl game rolled around, Graham knew everything about the Bulldogs. He could draw up every single play they ran, on both sides of the ball.

Warner Alford, who played for the Rebels in the late 1950s and then became the school's athletics director, was coached by Graham when he was a freshman.

“He played end when he was here at school. That's how he was in football. He was out there everyday in football until basketball started,” Alford said. “He scouted Mississippi State every Saturday from the start of the season. Wherever they went to play, he was there. We had a lot of guys that would go and scout the team we were going to play the next week.

Coach Wobble Davidson was also gone a lot scouting.”

There were years where the Rebels played the Bulldogs on Thanksgiving, while other times the game was played two days later on Saturday. Alford remembers everyone gathering at the field house at the start of the week to get the information from Graham.

“He didn't have a note or a piece of paper in front of

He had each player written down. He would put it on the board and then Coach Vaught would come in there and talk to the team about what we were going to do.

We used to play 10 games back then and when we played State, he had seen them nine times wherever they were. We all just loved it.”

Vaught only lost to Mississippi State twice during his tenure, and when Graham was scouting the Bulldogs, the Rebels were 7-0-2 against them. Both of the ties came in Starkville. Once Graham gave his information to the Rebels, he headed over to gym to begin basketball practices and get ready for the season.

“He just the ability to watch a team play and he knew it all. He just put up all their formations and he knew who was injured or who wasn't,” Alford said.

Vaught obviously put a huge emphasis on beating the Bulldogs. Alford said he remembers Vaught saying “this is the game.”

“He knew how big of a game this was. We knew each other through the years playing against them and against us. It was a big rival and we didn't take it for granted,” Alford said. “And it showed us with Coach Graham scouting them each game that it was an important game. Nobody did something like that.”

Alford wasn't sure how many people even knew Graham did his level of scouting. He wasn't sure that Mississippi State even knew he was at every game during the fall. When Alford tells people the story now, they think it's crazy.

“They say 'He was gone every weekend?' I said yeah,” Alford said. “Of course they have all the film now so it's necessary. It made it so much better with Coach Graham doing what he did. We knew exactly what they were going to do defensively and offensively.

It was amazing.”

This Friday, the Oxford Square Alliance will be bringing community members and local businesses together downtown to kick off the holidays with their annual Holiday Open House.

The Holiday Open House as it is known today began about five or six years ago, but the event has existed on a smaller scale for many years. The night underwent a bit of a renaissance several years ago as a way to help get Oxonians out of the house after Thanksgiving and enjoy some holiday cheer and great deals at retailers on the Square. It became more focused on including the whole family and was shifted to the daytime, which also allowed people to shop and visit restaurants while out and about for the event.

The day will begin with a special holiday edition of the Oxford Maker’s Market where they will be

having their Black Friday Spectacular. The market will be set up on courthouse lawn and feature a variety of handcrafted and handmade items made by local artists.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a free photo shoot with Santa, who will remain on the courthouse lawn until 5 p.m. Horsedrawn carriage rides will be available around the Square from 2 to 6 p.m.

The carriages are large and decorative and are chartered from a company out of Memphis. A large antique sleigh will also be available for people to get on and take photos with. From 4:30 to 6 that evening there will be a special performance by the Oxford Civic Chorus on the steps of City Hall where they will perform classic carols.

There will be a decoration station set up where kids can sit and decorate a personalized ornament to hang on their Christmas tree at home. Children are able to dip their hands in

water-soluble paint and grip a round ornament, leaving a handprint. They can then write their name and the year, and they will forever have a childhood keepsake took look back on every year. There is no charge for the ornament or for families to use the decoration station.

The annual Christmas tree lighting at City Hall at 6 p.m. will top off the full day of festive fun. Immediately after the lighting will be a special raffle of $500 in gift certificates for business on the Square.

There is no purchase required to enter the raffle.

Tickets can be picked up for free at any participating location on the Square.

Mark Huelse is the owner of Something Southern and the president of the Oxford Square Alliance. He said he looks forward to seeing everyone come out each year to enjoy both the atmosphere on the Square as well as just the simple joy of being together.

“It’s a unique, special atmosphere around the Square that day,” Huelse said. “It’s a great Christmas atmosphere, and there will be music. When we first started putting this event back together several years ago, some-

one said they could really see the Square turning into a Norman Rockwell or a Dickens village-style atmosphere. It truly is.

When you’re on the Square and the lights are on around you on all the buildings and it’s beautiful weather, it’s really unique day.”

Different shops and restaurants on the Square will be running specials at their own discretion.

University of Mississippi family mourning passing of senior

The family of an Ole Miss student who passed away suddenly over the weekend will be saying goodbye with the help of her friends today. Raegan Barnhart, 21, was a senior from Hernando who was majoring in dietetics and nutrition.

She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. Barnhart's visitation will begin at noon today at Hernando United Methodist Church.

The funeral will begin at the church at 3.

Even with classes dismissed for the Thanksgiving holiday, the university

had representatives from the University Counseling Center set up through today to help students with the death. No cause was given as to why Barnhart passed.

“We are all deeply saddened to learn about Raegan’s passing,” said Mindy Sutton, UM’s assistant vice chancellor of student affairs and dean of students.

“While so many of us are spending time with our families and friends during this Thanksgiving break, please keep Raegan’s friends, classmates and family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Annual Egg Bowl run goes well for OM ROTC cadets

While the vast majority of the Ole Miss student body is away for Thanksgiving break, members of the U.S. Army ROTC took to the highway to take part in the Egg Bowl run. A football signed by both Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen arrived in Oxford a little before 6 Monday night. Senior cadet Jonathan Dotson from Knoxville, Tennessee was one of the runners who followed a police escort up University Avenue en route to the Lyceum.

The Ole Miss cadets who volunteered to take part in the run met their MSU counterparts in Calhoun City not long before 1 Monday afternoon.

“We have really been running ever since. We stopped a few times to let some cars go past because we clogged up traffic pretty good on Highway 9 and Highway 7,” Dotson said. “The cool thing about the group that we're with is that we like to push each other.

All of these guys are giving up their Thanksgiving break just to be here and to do this run.”

Lafayette in first phase of new playground

The Lafayette County School District has begun the first phase of installing a new playground on its campus for use by the upper elementary school.

Lafayette Upper Elementary School accommodates third through fifth grade students within the district. Currently, those students do not have a playground of their own. The playground for the lower elementary is meant to serve both the lower and upper grades. This includes children from the pre-k classes through the fifth grade.

There were problems with this.

The wide age difference between the children using this one playground means that there was a lot of compromising on the equipment. Kindergartners and fourth graders play in different ways, and, ideally, would have different equipment.

Humane Society to build outdoor space for cats

The Oxford Lafayette Humane Society has announced plans to build a special outdoor feline enclosure known as a catio.

Catio is a combination of the words “cat” and “patio.”

The structure will be attached to the side of the humane society and specially designed to give its feline tenants a safe place to get some fresh air. Toys and climbable furniture will be present in the space to make sure that cats will have a chance to play and get some exercise.

Brooke Krizbai is on the board for the humane society and has had been pushing for the construction of the catio for a few years now. She said that one of the biggest motivators behind the construction of the area was to allow the cats at the shelter a safe place to outside to where they can get some exercise, lay in the sun and just enjoy being outside.

Gingerbread Village to return to the Ford Center

The Gertrude C. Ford Performing Arts Center at the University of Mississippi is getting ready to unveil the latest edition of their annual Gingerbread Village to benefit the Ole Miss Food Bank and The Pantry.

Visitors to the village are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the local organizations, but there will also be a place where patrons can donate cash. A donation is not required in order to come and view the houses.

Former Director of the Ford Center Norm Easterbrook originated idea for the Gingerbread Village in 2010. Reaching out to community members and bakers, they were able to get a few people to agree to contribute to the project.

That first year, the village featured just four houses.

“My favorite part is just seeing the all the different designs,” she said. “I like to try to figure out who did which house, especially when people have been participating for multiple years. Some of them are organizations and groups, some of them are school classes or families. The skill level just runs the spectrum. There’s some phenomenal ones made by highly skilled bakers, and then there are some that a group of kids put together.

Christmas Parade on Dec. 5, the performing arts center will host a parade after party where they will provide hot chocolate. The event is open to the community.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, Santa Clause himself will be making a special appearance in the village where he will be available for pictures. There will not be a photographer set up, so parents are advised to bring their own cameras if they wish to photograph their little one with Saint Nic. Thursday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m., there will be a special Big Kid Story time.

On the following day at 10:30 a.m., a Toddler/Preschool Story Time session will take place.

OES students bring in thousands in Disney fundraiser

Oxford Elementary School just brought one of their most successful fundraisers ever to a close for the year.

The fundraiser was a raffle for a Disney trip. OES’s Parent teacher organization paid for the trip and then had students sell the raffle tickets for $5 a piece.

Students were given different incentives to encourage them to sell more tickets.

For every 10 tickets a child sells, they received a collectable Disney trading pin.

When they sold 20 tickets, they received a lanyard to hang their pins on. Kids got to pick out each pin and show them off around school.

There were also grand prizes involved including an iPad Mini for the top seller in each grade. Gift certificates to Holli’s Sweet Tooth and Square Books Jr. were also a part of the incentive program. The

money spent on the Disney tickets and the cost of the prizes were subtracted from the profit raised through ticket sales and a surplus from the fundraiser last year. In total, Oxford Elementary School managed to raise $41,305 trough the sale of 8,261 raffle tickets.

The top six sellers in each grade got a special tour of City Hall with Mayor Pat Patterson. They even got to ride in patrol cars with the Oxford Police Department.

Mayor Pat treated each of the kids to lunch at Soulshine Pizza. The top seller for the second grade was Logan Meyer who raised $1,600. Hudson Gross was the top seller for the first graders, selling $750 worth of raffle tickets.

Students were not encouraged to literally go knocking on doors to sell tickets. They mostly sold to family members and neighbors. Their parents posted about the TURN TO DISNEY PAGE 12

ers in the upper elementary simply do not have time to take their students halfway across campus and back during each recess period while giving the kids adequate time to play. This new playground will be close to their classrooms and will have age-appropriate equipment.

The new playground is being funded from money raised through the sale of special license plates. The plates are colored red, white and yellow to pay homage to the colors of

Lafayette’s mascot, the Commodores. The plates cost $31, and $24 of that money goes directly to benefit the school district. All of that money will go toward funding the new playground. Once the playground has been fully funded, the incoming money will go toward implementing new technology in the classroom in a school district-wide initiative.

The first phase of the playground construction is being completed entirely by volunteers.

McGregor Steel has donated their time to lay out a plan to dig the 46 different anchoring holes that will be required to properly affix

the playground equipment to the property. Williams Equipment donated the manpower and machinery required to dig the holes.

The rest of the effort, primarily the assembly of the playground equipment, is being undertaken by a team of volunteers made up of parents and staff of the school.

They beg working on the project on Saturday, November 12 and worked all day Saturday and Sunday. They continued the work each afternoon, meeting at the future site of the playground form 3 p.m. until dark. Volunteers will resume the work once school starts back after the holiday. They are hoping to have this phase of

the projected completed within a couple weeks of the school resuming, provided the group continues to have ample volunteers come forward to help out.

Phase 2 of the playground construction has already been designed and will be purchased before the end of the year. President of the upper elementary parent teacher organization Pam Swain said that they could hired a company to come in and install phase 1 of the equipment, but enough volunteers came forward and said they were willing to put in the work necessary to assemble the equipment. Because of the money the district saved by

doing this, they had enough left over to fully fund phase 2 of the project. Swain said that the third and final phase of the playground’s construction will take place in the spring if fund raising continues to be successful and community support says strong.

exact dimensions of the structure or the exact kind of furniture that will fill the space, the humane society has not gotten that far yet.

However, they know for sure that the space will be conducive to happy, playful furry friends.

Krizbai is personally donating the money required to get the project off of the ground. Though she does not personally own any cats, she said that she has compassion for all animals and will do everything she can to make sure the cats at the shelter are taken care of and given the highest quality of life possible until their adoption. If any additional funds will be required for the catio’s instillation, the shelter will undertake fundraising efforts to fulfill the need. Community members are also able to make a donation to the shelter specifically for the catio.

Currently, the humane society is waiting on estimates as to how much the project will cost and what all must be done in order to build it. Once they get an estimate, which should be any day now, construction will begin immediately.

Karen Morris currently serves as the fundraising chair at OES. This is her third year to be involved in the fundraiser and her first year to chair it. She said she looks forward to the fundraiser every year and is always so pleased with how much money the kids are able to contribute to the school, as well as how much fun they have doing it. But quite a bit of work goes into making sure everything goes smoothly.

“A lot goes into it behind the scenes,” she said. “There’s no way we could do it without the help of all the parents we have and we just thank everyone for putting up with us for a month. It was fun. I’m excited that we were able to raise money that will go back into the school.”

Last year, the money raised from the Disney Fundraiser went toward the construction and instillation of new playground equipment. There are still a few different options being considered as to what to do with the significant amount of money the school raised this year. Among the different projects being explored are a new book/resource room for students to use and an initiative to purchase headphones for every student in order to create a more immersive learning experience when using technology in the classroom.

Any funds left over will then go back into the PTO’s budget and toward next year’s fundraiser. Having a slight surplus in this portion of the budget is what will allow them to purchase Disney tickets and incentive prizes again next year.

Wesley Owen is the Associate Athletics Director for Ticket Operations. He has a staff of six full time employees and eight student workers and the workers are at both The Pavilion and Tad Smith Coliseum. The tickets for football games have become a positive point for many fans, and Owen said that graphic designer comes up with look.

"The most I?m involved in them is sending the template, whether it?s a book, how big the tickets should be, et cetera. Then, when the designs are completed, it is sent to me to look over," Owen said. "I rarely ever have input to add in regards to the actual design because he does such a great job. We have gotten a lot of positive feedback regarding the look of the tickets now. Everything being in one book at the fan?s fingertips helps to not have to keep up with tickets, the

tickets out before the first game,” Cook said. “We're doing that pretty much all year. Having those first four games come up in a row this year, that was a challenge. Once we were able to get into a groove, working with our event staff, everything went well. Once we got through Alabama, things have been relatively smooth.”

Every game at VaughtHemingway Stadium this season was sold out, and the weeks leading up to the game haven't been as busy for the ticket office as a result because there haven't been tickets to have to sell.

“We don't have a ton of inventory to offer folks as we get closer to the games.

As opposed to other football seasons where we have to get people tickets, this year we can help focus on getting them into the games,” Cook said. “We're helping make sure they're enjoying the game-day experience and some of the other things that go along with it. We sold more tickets

parking pass, pertinent information they may need that is included in the ticket books."

The Egg Bowl is usually well attended and that should be the case this season even with both teams not ranked. MSU didn't sell its entire allotment this year, and the remaining tickets were returned to Ole Miss. Fans that weren't able to purchase a season package had the opportunity of buying those single game tickets, and Cook said that the remaining ticket sales went well. Georgia, Alabama and Auburn did not return tickets this year.

This was the first season that Ole Miss partnered with Stub Hub, a secondary market distributor that gives fans more security.

“Our relationship with Stub Hub and also IMG as well, we're able to guarantee fans their tickets and also have a record of them purchasing and that's helped quite a bit,” Cook said. “Fans that were able to purchase through them, we're going to be able to help them at the game.

Ole Miss has to defeat Mississippi State in order to make a bowl game. The secondary bowls that could land the Rebels if they win will announce a week from now and the ticket office will start sending out order forms as soon that information comes out.

“I'll be sitting in the office ready to kind of hit play as soon as we know when we're going and ready to take order from all of our great ticket holders,” Cook said. “And the fans that didn't get season tickets, we're going to do our best to allow our fans to purchase tickets for that game. All of our seating is based on a priority point basis and we anticipate the ability to fill all the orders from our fans.”

Cook added that the ticket office also works with the bowls to help fans get tickets if the school's allotment sells out. The SEC will

back that there was an issue with fraudulent tickets.

That hasn't been an issue in 2016 and that is due to the relationship with Stub Hub. “It really holds our folks that are reselling tickets more accountable in that there is that record of that transaction with us,” Cook said. “The fraudulent ticket issue has been very marginal this year to say the least. This is my third full football season and the first couple, we had quite a bit more fraud and fraudulent tickets. I do attribute that with Stub Hub and the brand that they are. Stub Hub has been great in that they fully work with us and that it's also fully integrated with our ticketing company that has been here for quite a while. It gives us the opportunity to see who has purchased the ticket but also for the fan itself to have that full confidence that you're in our data base.

“If you lose your ticket on the ride up, we're able to help,” Cook added. “We can see the tracking of the ticket. It has helped us tremendously because in the past on the secondary

The ticket office also stays busy with basketball and baseball. There is just 10 weeks before the start of the baseball season, and so far there have have been over 5,700 season tickets sold. “There is a buzz with basketball and we have sold more season tickets over the previous few seasons.

We're really trending upward and earlier in the process,” Cook said. “Coach (Andy) Kennedy does a great job and we feel like we have another strong team.

LHS-Pontotoc clash one of best in state Friday night

T

here are 12 high school football games being played all over the state on Friday night. And the best matchup of the bunch may be right here at Lafayette's William L. Buford Stadium. A night before Ole Miss and Mississippi State battle in the annual Egg Bowl, the Commodores will host the Pontotoc Warriors in the MHSAA Class 4A north state title game.

This is a familiar spot to be in for the Commodores, who won three of these games in a row from 2009-2011. Lafayette also went on the road to Cleveland back in 2013 and won to advance to the state championship. This is the fourth straight home playoff game for the Commodores and the weather should be a lot better compared to last week, which should translate to a packed house.

New Albany head coach Jake Hill has gone up against both teams this season.

He is very familiar with both rosters, and he has a personal relationship with some of the coaches involved on both sides. He will be at LHS Friday night to watch the game. And he is expecting a good battle.

“Personally, I think it's going to have to be a high scoring game. Lafayette is going to get their points. That's just the bottom line.

They're going to find the end zone and going to score,” Hill said. “The question is Pontotoc going to be able to score with them and I think they can. I think both of them have really good defenses but I think TURN TO PONTOTOC PAGE 22

If the Ole Miss Rebels defeat Mississippi State in the annual Egg Bowl Saturday afternoon, they will make a bowl game. It's as simple as that. A win over the Bulldogs means one more game, and 15 valuable practices, for the Rebels this season. A loss means the equipment staff will be putting gear in moth balls until the spring, and the first time under Hugh Freeze that the Rebels won't be playing in a bowl.

The annual Egg Bowl means a lot to both programs each year, but in the case of the Rebels, the

game means so much more for so many different reasons.

“It’s Egg Bowl week. That should be enough motivation for our players and coaches to prepare accordingly,” Freeze said Monday. “It’s a game that means an extraordinary amount to this university, to our fan base and to theirs. It’s going to be a great challenge. We’ve had obviously a lot of adversity throughout the course of this year. To prepare to try to get a sixth win and gain bowl eligibility against your in-state rival, these games are always quite interesting, regardless of

Steady Leader Martin keeps things going for Lafayette secondary

Every defense needs a leader, someone who can make all the calls and keep everyone else on the same page. Xavier Martin is that player for the Lafayette Commodores. He plays the role of Commodore, or strong safety for those not familiar to the terminology of defensive coordinator Ben Ashley. Martin has no issue putting his body on the line, in the box, or against a wide receiver. He also has the ability to snag balls out of the air like he did against Louisville in the second round of the playoffs.

“He's a great football player. Somebody is going to sign him and he's going to be a great college football player,” Lafayette coach Michael Fair said. “If you want to find him, you just look for the football and he's usually close. He's great when the ball is in the air. He is a great safety, field general out there. He's almost like an extension of Coach Ashley out there. He gets them lined up and Coach Lee has done a great job of coaching him this year. He understands what we want to do defensively and he does a good job of executing it.”

Martin has six intercep-

tions heading into the MHSAA Class 4A north half title game with Pontotoc, a team that likes to throw the ball around just a little bit.

Ashley said Martin has had a great season, and that he is a “phenomenal tackler” in the open field.

“He is always around the football. He is the guy in the secondary that relays our calls and makes sure that we're in the right coverage and that kind of thing,” Ashley said. “He's just a good presence on the field for us. He just seems like a really mature kid. He doesn't seem to get rattled. Having that back there is really big. We're definitely, definitely going to miss him next year.”

Ashley admits that he is not a person who does multiple tasks well at the same time, but Martin is.

“When you're not good at multi tasking, which I'm not, it's good to find people that are that can help you,” Ashley added. “When I got here in June, you could just tell that he was going to be a special player for us. And he has just continued to get better every single week.

That's what you want, you want to get better every single week, as our whole team has. We have so many guys on defense that have done so well for us this year.”

Lafayette senior safety Xavier Martin (6) is the leader of a very talented secondary that has 19 interceptions on the season.

The entire secondary has impressed Ashley this fall.

Back in 2007 when he was at South Panola, his secondary included the likes of Nick Brassell and Tig Barksdale. The Commodores this year have given up a grand total of four touchdown passes allowed versus 19 interceptions.

“I've never been that good on the back end with these kind of players before,” Ashley said. “When I was at South Panola, I had four Dandy Dozens that

were in the secondary and working every single day.

Those were great guys and we had a great team but as far as a sure enough four guys, this is the group. And what makes them so special is that three of the four are seniors. They're seasoned and they've been there done that. And that's what has been so fun. They play hard and they have skill to go along with it.”

Martin said his role is to put everyone in their position to make a play and

then go out and make plays the best he can.

“Coach Ashley tells me what to do, I remember it during practice, and then I relay it during the game,” Martin said. “I'm just in the middle of everything and I can relay it quickly.”

Martin thought his season could be better but he wasn't too bothered by his stats because the Commodores were winning. He didn't set a goal for interceptions, but he does have double the amount he had

in 2015.

“I had a lot more confidence this year with the coaches and the people that I'm playing with. It's been fun,” Martin said. “I think the defense is better for me. I have more plays to make. My teammates are in better position to make plays. Coach Ashley does a good job during the middle of the week getting us ready and we just go make plays.”

The secondary doesn't have a nickname, they just go play, Martin said. He prefers a big hit over an interception. His best one of the year was against Louisville when he jumped up high in the air to grab the ball.

Lafayette is just one win away from playing for the MHSAA Class 4A state championship. Martin said he was excited for Friday's game.

“We've never been this far, our senior class hasn't.

It will be fun,” said Martin, who was a manager in 2013 when the Commodores were in this game last. “We always wanted to be there and now we're here. We've got to do what we've got to do. It's a tradition around here, we have to keep it up.

Ben Bianco excited about his chance to play for Louisville Cardinals

Excitement was what Oxford catcher Ben Bianco felt when he was offered a chance to play baseball at the University of Louisville by coach Dan McDonnell a few weeks back.

The senior has been working hard his entire life with the goal of playing college baseball at this upper level. And to get the opportunity to play for one of the nation's top programs, and for a coach who is so close to his family, made things that much better for Bianco.

“I've been talking to Louisville for a while. They had

just never pulled the trigger with an offer,” Bianco said. “I wasn't necessarily looking to get an offer this fall but just get better myself. And I figured it would come. I've always wanted to play Division I baseball, and I wanted to play with the best competition possible. This definitely gives a good opportunity to do that.”

The 2016 baseball season was bittersweet one for Bianco. The sweet was he was a member of a team that won a second straight MHSAA Class 5A state title. The bitter was he had to watch the ending from the dugout at Trustmark Park after suffering an

injury to his labrum that required season-ending surgery.

Bianco was hurt in the 13th game of a season that extended over 36 play dates. For an athlete that has grown up playing the sport, it was tough not be on the field helping the Chargers win. Before he was injured, Bianco had an onbase percentage of .636. He had walked 13 times, and been hit by a pitch five times.

He was hitting .385 with eight RBIs and three doubles.

Bianco said the opportunity to hit the field again doesn't change his mindset about the upcoming season.

“I'm here to play hard and to make sure we bring back

another state championship to Oxford. I want to do the best of my ability to make sure that happens,” Bianco said. “It's awesome to be back out here.

When you sit for the last two thirds of the season, and not being able to do anything but rehab for 30 minutes everyday. It puts it in perspective how lucky I am to get to play baseball everyday. It's awesome to be back out here again.”

Bianco didn't start swinging a bat again until the end of June or the start of July. His first real game action came just a few months ago in September when he hit with the Ole Miss Rebels.

“All summer all I did was a throwing program to get my arm back,” he said. “I'm medically cleared to do what I want, but I have to keep working to get my arm strength back. I can let it loose, but letting it loose isn't the same thing as it was. Hitting, I think I'm better than what I was.

Just getting to step back and watch Ole Miss and everyone out here do it, that gave me insight. It's like watching film for six months.”

Oxford coach Chris Baughman had a big smile on his face when talking about Bianco and his return to the field, as well as what playing for Louisville meant.

“I'm thrilled for him. To go through what he had to go through last year, it was a tough injury. He had looked forward to playing with those guys last year and being in a productive role for us,” Baughman said. “And he was until he got hurt spring break. For him to be able to come back from that injury, I'm really excited that it takes the pressure off of him. That he doesn't have to worry about being recruited.

Oxford's Stinnett earns a spot with Hinds CC Eagles

As a member of Team Mississippi, Oxford's Carson Stinnett was able to showcase his baseball talents to a larger pool of coaches. The summer experience paid off in a big way as he earned a spot on the Hinds Community College baseball team, starting in 2018.

The Charger senior remembers playing in a tournament at Clinton High School and then meeting up with Hinds head coach Sam Temple as a result. Stinnett played shortstop to start the game, and then pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run while he was on the mound. Temple came to talk with Stinnett after the game and that led to him

getting a call from the Hinds pitching coach, Wes Thigpen.

“They told me that they wanted me to come on a visit and I went down there and they showed me the whole school and I really liked it,” said Stinnett, who will pitch but also play in the field for the Eagles. “If I can work my way into third base or in the field, as well as

pitch, is he talked to me about playing. The 2017 year doesn't have as many arms as it did last year, so he needed pitching.”

Stinnett is the odds on favorite to be the No. 1 pitcher for the Chargers this coming season. He was the No. 3 starter behind Jason Barber and Houston Roth in 2016.

He was 3-4 with a 2.80 ERA in seven starts last year. He

had three complete games and one shutout. He also garnered 33 strikeouts in 45 innings of work. Stinnett felt like he and Reid Markle were going to have to take on a much larger role this coming spring.

Stinnett has worked on getting stronger during fall ball. He's done long toss, thrown out of the bullpen and then on flat ground be-

sides working on his pitches. His velocity is up around 84 miles-per-hour, which seems to please Stinnett.

Dance has long been a part of Martin's life

Madisyn Martin may have just joined the Oxford Chargerettes this fall, but she has been dancing since she was able to walk. When the team first started, Martin was a member of the cheerleading team.

Her mother even helped get the Chargerettes off the ground, but Martin wasn't able to take part due to the conflict.

“I really wanted to do it but I was on the cheer squad and not able to do both,” Martin said. “There wasn't enough time to do both.”

The dance team and being a cheerleader are similar in a lot ways. Both help pump up the crowd during football and basketball games. Martin said that the dance team practices a little longer.

“We're here a lot and I'm closer with the coaches and with some of the girls on the team,” Martin said.

Hip hop is a favorite for Martin, who said she is obsessed with hitting the routine as hard as she can. Martin also likes the facial expressions that come along with performing to hip hop music.

“I love the upbeat aspect to it. Instead of being sassy, it's more like strong and hard hitting,” Martin said.

Football season is now complete for the Chargerettes. A handful of the team members danced during the Lady Chargers' basketball game with Minor (Alabama). Football season went well overall, Martin felt.

“I thought it was so much fun just

being with the girls. I always loved the atmosphere of Friday night lights and it was fun to be able to dance and just wear jazz shoes instead of cheer shoes for a change,” she said. “I thought it was sad for it to end, especially with it being my senior year. It's what I've been used to for four years. It's really crazy that it's over with. It's weird that we will never be there on the sidelines again.”

Outside of school, Martin dances at the Oxford School for the Performing Arts.

Martin said she works on hip hop, jazz, tap, ballet and contemporary.

“I've been dancing competitively since I was in the third grade and that's something I'll probably always do,” Martin said. “I love it.”

Ellie Hinton and Ansley Howell are the two other dancers that Martin is close with on the team. The three have grown up dancing together and all three are in sync with each other.

Basketball games will be cherished now for Martin, who danced to music over the public address instead of the band like at football.

“It's different performing in the middle of the court instead of halftime during the games on the field. It feels like more pressure and that there are more people there,” Martin said. “As far as our dances go, we pretty much do the same things. records. They’re always highly competitive and I know this one will be no different. We have a great challenge in trying to stop their offense. It’s a good scheme, and their quarterback (sophomore Nick Fitzgerald) is playing at a really high level with skilled receivers.”

Saturday's game features two defenses that rank in the bottom of the SEC, and the nation, in overall defense.

The Rebels rank No. 101, while the Bulldogs are No. 105 in the NCAA FBS level.

What that could translate to is a shootout, and one that could favor the Bulldogs considering the way Fitzgerald is playing. He has passed for 2,178 yards and he ranks seventh in the SEC in rushing with 985 yards and 12 touchdowns. Freeze said the key to defending Fitzgerald resides on limiting gains on first down.

“We have to win first downs. They’re like a lot of us, when they get into their third-down packages with a quarterback like that, it’s very difficult to plan for and to stop and have success,”

Freeze said. “We have to win first down against a guy like him. I think that’s a critical stat to follow in this game, being able to win that down and get them into third-andlong. If you’re always worried about, if it’s either run or pass, it can be difficult.”

This is the final home game for the 2016 senior class, which includes players like tight end Evan Engram, who leads the SEC in receiving yards, and others like former South Panola standouts Tony Conner and Issac Gross.

“By the people who are very close to the program and those of us who have worked with them, there’s no doubt in our mind that they have rejuvenated and made Ole Miss football relevant again. That will be the memory,” Freeze said about the senior class. “Unfortunately, it’s a ‘What have you done for me lately society,’ so some will choose to put emphasis on the disappointing season that many view us as having, including myself. But the totality of what they have done here, you can’t argue. Two New Year’s Six bowl games, four straight bowl games, hopefully making it five after Saturday, that’s what they

should be remembered for.”

There will be a number of younger players, like quarterback Shea Patterson, seeing time for the Rebels Saturday, and that means the first time in the Egg Bowl. Freeze said he made sure to let them know about the importance of the annual matchup.

“John Youngblood spoke (Sunday) and did a marvelous job, but unfortunately he can’t participate, as Chad Kelly can’t and others. Evan Engram is hurt. Issac Gross is hurt. They’ll be questionable for the game, along with the many others we have,” Freeze said. “DaMarkus Lodge will be out, as will D’Vaughn Pennamon. Offensive line wise, Sean Rawlings and Robert Conyers will try their best to get ready to go.

They have to understand the magnitude of this game. Our young kids, for the value of the seniors and our program getting the extra practices and getting to a bowl game, it’s vital that they understand that. I'm excited to watch it.”

Pontotoc head coach Jeff Carter should be familiar to Ole Miss and Oxford fans. The former Chucky Mullins award winner was an assistant under Johnny Hill at OHS for two years and he coached Jake when he was in high school. The year before Carter took over, the Warriors were just 2-9 and now they're 13-1.

Jake Hill also coached with Lafayette offensive line coach Jason Russell when he was at Oxford, so there was no way he wasn't going to miss how this game turned out.

Jake Hill felt these were the two best teams in 4A and that this is the right matchup to decide which team moves on.

“Playing both of these guys this season, they both deserve everything they're playing for Friday night,” he said. “I was at the game last week with Pontotoc and Noxubee and I'm going to tell you, it was a close game but Pontotoc really outplayed them the whole game. They missed

some plays early and should have had an interception, maybe for a touchdown, on the first drive and instead they give up seven points.

“Then they come back the second possession and have a guy wide open running down the field and (Justin) Carter over throws him and he almost never does that. So they got behind early but as far as controlling the game and being the better team last week, I thought from the beginning they outplayed Noxubee. It's going to be a really good matchup. You got two power houses that play physical football. Offenses are really good, defenses are really good. I'm excited to see who turns out to be the winner.”

Being at home is an advantage for the Commodores just because it keeps them in the same routine.

“That gives you a little bit of an edge. Pontotoc, those kids haven't been in this position and Lafayette has. Lafayette kind of knows what it's going to be like and you have kids that have never been in this situation so how are they going to respond to it,” Jake Hill said. “It could go really good for them or they can panic and not play as well as they're capable of. I doubt that's going to happen because Jeff does an awesome job

with those guys and he's going to have them ready to play.”

Friday's game will come down to mistakes made, Jake Hill felt. Which team makes the fewest mistakes will be the winner.

“That's the reason Pontotoc is in the situation they're in. You go look at them through the season and they don't make mistakes,” Jake Hill said. “The only game they made a bunch of mistakes on was Amory and they lost that game. Lafayette is going to do what they do. They're going to run the ball, they're going to throw it and they're going to play really good defense. I think Lafayette overmatches them as far as size and speed but watching Pontotoc play this past Friday, those boys really showed me something. They showed a lot of fight and I know when we played them, that's one thing they do really well. They play hard every single snap.

When you get a bunch of kids believing in themselves and believing in the coaching staff, they end up having pretty good football being played.”

Friday Night Previews: Week 15 Two best teams square off at Lafayette in 4A north half title game

For the past two months, Lafayette football coach Michel Fair has praised his coaching staff and his Commodores for the way they have prepared each week. Talent alone didn't punch the Commodores' ticket to the MHSAA Class 4A north state title game.

They had to watch a lot of film, listen to the coaches as to how to get lined up and then they had to execute the game plans.

Everything had to be done just right.

The Commodores are now just one win away from playing for their third state title in school history.

In order for that to happen, they will have to defeat a Pontotoc team that is very sound and well coached, just like the Commodores.

Lafayette vs Pontotoc Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: 105.1 FM “I think we're peaking at the right time. At the first of the year, there were a lot of folks who were looking at us and saying these guys are just getting to know each other a little bit,” Fair said. “It was a process. It took us some time to start to gel as a team and as a staff. We never coached together until we played Horn Lake. It was important to get those games behind us and under our belt

against good opponents.”

The matchup with the Oxford Chargers in Week 4 is when things started to really gel for Lafayette, Fair felt.

“We kind of got our identity on both sides of the ball. I feel like we've played well throughout the season, but I think we're kind of peaking at the right time and playing real well,” said Fair, adding he felt the two best teams in the north were playing for the title.

Pontotoc (13-1 overall) defeated Noxubee County, last season's champion in 4A, in the semifinals last week.

“Noxubee was up 14-0 but the thing about Pontotoc is they're so well coached and they never give up,” Fair said. “They play as hard as anybody that we've faced and very

talented in some key positions. They just get after you on both sides of the ball.”

The Warriors are led by senior quarterback Jacob Carter on offense. He has thrown for 2,537 yards and completed 63.3 percent of his passes. He also has 30 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

“He makes great decisions and puts the ball where only his guy can catch it most of the time,” Fair said. “He does a really good job of managing the football game back there for them. He can make plays with his legs as well.

He broke contain against Noxubee a couple of times and kept some drives alive.

He is a smart-headed football player.”

through the air. The top receiver is Austin Morphis with 57 catches for 819 yards. Darryl Dilworth is one of two players with 34 catches and he leads the Warriors with nine touchdown grabs.

Fair said Harmon runs hard and breaks tackles

well, and that the offensive line he runs behind does a good job of opening up holes.

On defense, Lafayette will be trying to score against a unit that is hardnosed and prides itself on being in the right spots.
