Without Mike Young, the Oxford Park Commission would barely be able function. Young serves as the program director for the OPC and oversees nearly

every program, class and instructional course at the commission.

Last month, Young was officially recognized as the Mississippi Recreation and Parks Professional of the Year, a prestigious title given out to one

parks and rec professional in Mississippi every year and selected from a group of nominees by a special committee. It is the highest professional award the Mississippi Recreation and Parks Association gives out.

Young has been employed with the park commission in a full-time capacity since September of 2006. He began working with the commission in his senior year at Ole Miss. He was a TURN TO YOUNG PAGE 8

OPD’s haunted house ‘scares’ residents for a good cause

Popular Halloween spooks and specters, and those that aren’t as well known, found their way to town to take part in the Oxford Police Department’s ninth annual haunted house over the weekend. The three-night event, which is also co sponsored by the Oxford Housing Authority, started Thursday and it brought out a number of people looking to get their scare on. Members of the Oxford Fire Department acted as spooky tour guides, while many officers dressed up to help stage the different scenes. Those entering the house walked through a maze of class rooms that normally serves as the training center for law enforcement officials.

“We’re just seen as the authority figure and nobody wants to be around the authority figure, so events like these humanize us and make us seem like we’re just like everybody else,” said OPD chief Joey East. “We get to know the community and bond with them and spend time with the families and their kids, and I think it builds a good trust and good relationship with the community.”

A tight bond is something children got with their parents or friends as they moved through the building. A narrow hallway, and close quarters

overall, served those acting out parts in the haunted house very well. Loud screams could be heard repeatedly from well inside the maze.

And when those that entered finally got outside of the facility, they were treated to an appearance from Michael Meyers and the headless horseman, who were hidden in the darkness. A hearse had its back door open, while a coffin with a woman inside sprang open just as people took their last steps to freedom. That consistently got people to scream out with fear.

It took several days to decorate the house, and all of the efforts were handled by officers, fire fighters or members of the OPD staff.

Senegence makeup arrives in Oxford

Senegence makeup has landed in Oxford, thanks to Pam Horton. The brand is formulated with natural ingredients and produced in the United States, as well as gluten and GMO free in most products. Horton, an Oxford resident for 36 years, taught at Oxford High School and Tech, where she taught both Oxford and Lafayette students. Horton got to know many entrepreneurs within the community. After nurturing and teaching students for many years, many of the business moguls in the Oxford community today were her students.

“After being retired for five years, my old college roommate called me and told me the Senegence story,” Horton said. “No matter how much cleaning we do, the bacteria in our homes strips us and makes us looked aged. When I learned more about the brand I decided to become a distributor because my goal was to make my face look better.”

One of the brands most famous products is LipSense.

“LipSense does not dry out your mouth and does not have a bad taste. I was a lipstick junkie, always pulling my lipstick out and reapplying in my car, after dinner, et cetera,” Horton said. “LipSense moisturizes your lips and will stay on for 12 to 18 hours. I spend no more than 10 minutes on the entire procedure of my products for the day. You must apply a layer of gloss over the lip color to seal the color on your lips. After a day my eyes may be tired, but my face has stayed since I put it on at 6:30 a.m. application time.”

LipSence is formulated without wax and does not contain lead. Senegence does not test on animals.

“Pollutants from the day can get trapped in your skin and your pores,” she said.

“Also, many of us do not realize that a lot of beauty products contain harmful chemicals like lead. Anything you put on your skin or lips is being absorbed into you body.”

“We had four stations during our makeover event.

The first taught proper care and cleansing of the face,” Horton said. “We also

matched foundation color with skin tones. Renee, our beauty expert and state leader of Senegence in California provided Hollywood makeup tips. On Saturday we talked about techniques and ways to approach a customer along with new prod-

ucts that have just been announced. Sunday we had an overflow of customers. We opened at 1 and closed around 6 p.m. Not only are we teaching ladies about their skincare and makeup but it is also a sisterhood. We talk all the time.”

Renee Stewart resides in Los Angeles, where she is an international makeup artist to the stars. She came into Oxford for the Senegence makeover festivities.

“We took Renee and some other out of towners to eat at Taylor Grocery,” Horton

said. “They had never had turnip greens, catfish et cetera. It was hilarious to watch them taste foods we eat everyday.”

Stewart trains internationally and travels for Senegence. She helped to create an army pink lipstick color, where a portion of the sales go to any natural disasters that are happening. A portion of all pink lipsticks sold in the month of October go towards the Susan G. Komen foundation.

“Every time we sell a foundation a portion of that goes to our charity, the Makesense Foundation which helps women and children in crisis,” Stewart said.

DR. RONALD BORNE Dr. Ronald F. Borne, 77, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Misissippi. He joined Mallinckrodt Chemical Works as a research chemist, before joining the faculty of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi in 1968.

He served the university in several roles over the next 37 years and retired from full-time service in June, 2004.

Chug for the Jugs to benefit American Cancer Society

The Ole Miss chapter of Colleges Against Cancer has collaborated with the American Cancer Society to hold the first ever Chug for the Jugs fundraiser and bar crawl on the Square this coming Thursday.

A significant portion of the funds raised during the bar crawl will go toward funding research in combating the disease while the rest of the proceeds will fund a variety of support services offered by the American Cancer Society. Those support services include education initiatives, breast exams, caregiver support and much more.

Colleges Against Cancer was set up at Ole Miss earlier this year. It is a national organization comprised of college students who collaborate with the goal of one day eliminating cancer by working with the American Cancer Society. The Ole Miss chapter of the organization is working to set up four annual fundraisers that will happen at different points throughout the year.

Mallory Maier is enrolled in UM’s School of Pharmacy and works with Colleges Against Cancer as their Caregiver and Survivorship Chair. It is her job to organize different methods of community outreach.

She works to connect with cancer survivors, patients and the caregivers that look after both. One of the major goals Maier’s organization, and her role in particular, is to ensure that those people are celebrated and understand that they have a support system and a community that will be there for them.

The fight against cancer is something very personal for Maier. At the age of 4, Maier’s younger sister battled the disease and survived. She is 16 now. Maier said that without the financial and emotional support of nonprofits, the toll on her family would have been much more severe than it already was.

“We do these events to raise money, but it’s also a chance to just have something fun going on for the community and for these survivors and those currently dealing with cancer,” Maier said. “We have these events that they can go to and just have fun and forget about all that for a little while, but at the same time we will be raising money to help these people out. This is a financial burden, anyway. We just wanna do whatever we can to help.”

The idea for the fundraiser came about in August. After gauging whether or not students and community members would be interested in the event, the student organization began planning it. Because the group is so new to the area and everyone working with it are a close-knit group of friends, all of the planning and logistical work was shared. They did not really have a model to follow when organizing the fundraiser because it is the first year it has ever happened.

Working with Micah Johnson of the American Cancer Society, student organizers went to different bars, spoke with the managers and owners and hoped for the best.

Every single bar the organizers approached was enthusiastic about participating in the fundraiser. No one turned them down. The bar crawl is set for Thursday and will last from 6 that night until midnight.

Each bar will have certain hours in which people can come in to enjoy the specials.

The bar crawl begins at Frank And Marlee’s at 6 where it will be until 7. Then the party moves to Proud Larry’s and the Blind Pig from 7 to 8. Rib Cage and Round Table will be participating from 8 to 9. Funky’s and Roosters are going from 9 to 10. The levee and The Cellar will be contributing from 10 to 11, and the night ends at The Corner and Rafters from 11 to midnight.

Those who purchase a ticket for the bar crawl will receive a t-shirt. The shirt will function as a ticket for the wearer and get

them access to discounts and specials at each bar.

OSD named No. 1 district in the state

The Oxford School District has officially ranked as No. 1 in the state of Mississippi based off of test scores from the 2015-2016 school year.

The results, known as Accountability Results by the Mississippi Department of Education, follow Mississippi’s grading system. This system considers a variety of factors including students’ performance on state tests, improvement from the previous year and whether or not high schoolers are graduating within four years.

Schools across the state receive grades based on how well their students are achieving based on the aforementioned indicators. The five schools in the Oxford School District that were graded received all As and one B. OSD Superintendent Brian Harvey said that he along with other district officials were extremely proud of everyone who helped them reach this momentous achievement.

“We’re happy for our students,

teachers and administrators, and we’re happy for our community,” Harvey said. “It’s a great honor to be listed as an A school. To be listed as one of the top districts in the state is certainly an honor, but to achieve the No. 1 ranking in the state, that’s important to the whole community.”

Oxford learned of their ranking earlier in the week, but was not allowed to share the news with the community until Friday when the Mississippi Department of Education made the results public.

Harvey said that the scores are a direct refection on the work students, teachers and parents have put into the district over

the past several years.

“This is because of the hard work being done by teachers, students, people who the administrators have put in place, the work put into professional development and training on the standards, everything,” Harvey said. “It’s a group effort.”

Della Davidson Elementary School was ranked No. 2 out of all other elementary, intermediate and middle schools in the state. Della Principal LaTonya Robinson received the news of the ranking about two nights before the news went public Friday.

Robinson said that when she first got the news, she was “appropriately numb” and was up much of

the night letting the news sink in.

She has been giddy with excitement about it ever since.

“Oh my goodness, this just feels awesome; that’s the only word I can use,” Robinson said.

“I’m very grateful and very honored to be a part of a team of teachers and parents and students who come to school every day and give their all. It is a wonderful feeling.”

Robinson said that the scores from the tests are entirely reflective of the work teachers and students have put in and that she could not be more proud of them.

“These teachers are very content driven,” she said. “They put

their all into the kids. They build relationships with the children and it just shows in a culmination of something big, even bigger than ourselves and what we thought. We were shooting for an A, and to think that we’re No. 2 in the state out of all elementary and middle schools is quite exceptional. I’m just happy to be a part of the team.”

The 2015-2016 school year, from which the Accountability Results were taken, was the first year for districts statewide to adopt a more challenging testing process that requires every student to elaborate on their choices throughout their exams.

The new standards are referred to as the Mississippi College and Career-Ready Standards.

“The tests measure more complex, real-world skills such as critical thinking, writing and problem solving,” Harvey said in a statement released Friday afternoon. “Students are being held at a much higher standard so they can be successful in college or the workforce.” chaning.green@journalinc.com Twitter: chaningthegreen

Ruth Hill celebrates 101 years of life

Ruth Hill of Oxford Health and Rehab celebrated 101 years of life last Friday surrounded by friends, family and caregivers.

Ms. Ruth was born in the small town of North Vernon, Indiana. She came into the world on the second floor of her grandfather’s store on the town’s main street. She married her husband at age 17 during the Second World War. Ms. Ruth’s husband was an engineer and worked on the trains that helped transport military personnel and supplies across the country.

North Vernon was a rail town that had four railroads going through the heart of the city, according to Ms. Ruth. She and her husband remained in her hometown for several years while he worked to make sure all of the trains stayed operational.

funny part about it was that I wasn’t even getting student aid for it. I was just a volunteer. Anywhere he needed someone to plug in, I was there. Just talking to him, even though his route was different, he helped change my course. I just enjoyed it, being around sports.”

After graduating from the university in 2006, he continued his job with the OPC on a part-time basis. In September that year, a full-time position opened and Young was brought on board as the director of the activity center. A year and a half later the programming director position became available and he has been in that role ever since.

Young said that though he was extremely proud of the award, the real satisfaction he has gotten out of his job over the years comes from seeing people in the community enjoying the programs that he works so hard to organize.

“I really enjoy the days when I can get out of the office and go and look around at the programs we have here,” Young said. “When I can see the kids enjoying

part-time employee with the OPC and would help prep the gym for the day, lock up at night and just make sure everything was up and running so the day would go as smooth as possible.

He first gained an interest in working in parks and rec as student at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia. Young became involved with intramural sports at the community college where he was studying telecommunications. He was volunteering for whatever the intramural teams needed. He kept scores for games, helped out with events and anything else they wanted an extra hand with. Young had considered being a coach, but he soon realized that he loved the idea being involved with sports and organizing events on a community level.

“Firstly, it was the intramural director at the time, Fred Smith,” Young said when asked what first appealed to him about the intramural teams at Northwest. “The

our programs, enjoying tennis or gymnastics, when I look out my door and see parents dropping their kids off and they’re running to gymnastics because they’re so ready for class, that’s what keeps me here. I don’t have to get any awards. For me, it’s all about seeing that.”

Young’s co-workers nominated him for the award in secret. He said that if he would have caught them sooner, he would have asked them not to complete the process. Once he found out that he won and went to Biloxi to formally accept the award at a banquet, it finally began to sink in. He said that the seeing everyone else who was nominated, he would have picked at least two other nominees before he picked himself. Young said that more than anything, he is grateful to be a part of the OPC team and a part of Oxford.

Double Decker Festival seeks for it ‘official’ look

“I’m just so thankful for my OPC family,” he said. “In all the years I’ve been here, I’ve always had great coworkers here. We work pretty well together. I’m just really thankful to my OPC family, to the city of Oxford, the mayor and all the aldermen.

I’m just so thankful for everyone.”

Debbie Swindoll has been with the park commission for over two decades and works under Young. Swindoll was responsible for starting the tennis program at the OPC. She said that if she had to pick a favorite thing about Young, it would be his level headedness and ability to handle any situation that comes at him with a calm demeanor.

“I’ve never seen Mike rattled or lose his composure,” Swindoll said. “I’ll tell you, he’s probably the best boss I’ve ever had, and I’ve been around the business for a while now. He is always willing to go above and beyond.

If OPC were to ever lose Mike, they would be taking a big loss.”

Celebrating 22 years April 28-29, Oxford’s Double Decker Arts Festival is looking for local artists to submit a masterpiece to be named the “official artwork” for the festival. The art will be printed on the official festival t-shirts and the official festival poster. The public will be invited to attend the Double Decker Arts Festival press conference at the beginning of the New Year to unveil the chosen artist.

Last year’s Double Decker artwork was created by local artist and Registered Art Therapist Eden Flora who moved to Oxford from Boston and fell in love with the town.

Her artistic style was childlike, playful, and bright which made for a top seller for the weekend.

Saiz ready to make his biggest impact for OM Rebels

M

idway through the 2015-2016 basketball season, Sebastian Saiz was on a tear for the Ole Miss Rebels.

He was consistently posting 10 or more points and 10 or more rebounds. The junior was truly playing as large as his 7 foot, 6 inch wingspan.

Then he got injured, hit in the eye during, leading to a lot of uneasy moments as he recovered from his retina become detached.

Saiz missed six games last season. He played in 26 contests, starting 24. The native of Madrid, Spain averaged 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. Who knows what his final stats would have been if he didn't miss the action he did. And who knows where the Rebels could have ended up if he stayed healthy.

“It was one of the most scary things that happened to me in my entire life,” Saiz said of the injury. “I was going numb the first couple of games and then going to surgery because my retina was coming out of line. It was pretty scary. This is one of the big reasons I stayed at Ole Miss. I wanted to prove to everyone that I could do way better than I was doing last year before I got injured. It gave me motivation.”

Things will hopefully be a lot different for Saiz from an injury standpoint this coming season. He said that he is healthy, and ready to make his biggest impact for coach Andy Kennedy. The offense will go through Saiz this year, or at least that's where things will start when the Rebels are in the half court. In past few seasons, when Kennedy needed a score, he drew up a play for guards Marshall Henderson and Stefan Moody.

“He is still 7-6 tip to tip which is astronomically long. That makes up for his lack of explosive athleticism because of his length. I have challenged him to be a double-double guy for us this year, lead the SEC in reTURN TO SAIZ PAGE 15

Champion Commodores LHS rallies to top Senatobia, win 2-4A title

Two losses at the start of the year prepared Lafayette for its biggest win of the season Friday night. The Commodores are the Division 2-4A champions for 2016 after earning a 17-14 victory over Senatobia at William L. Buford Stadium.

The Warriors, who beat the Commodores last season to claim the 2-4A title, led the Commodores 14-10 in the fourth quarter. They had all the momentum, and the drive to close out what would have been the biggest win of the year for the Warriors. Lafayette never gave in, getting a huge kickoff return from Tay Tay Owens to recapture the lead, and

close out its seventh straight win.

“Every time he touches it, there is a chance of him scoring with it,” Lafayette coach Michael Fair said about Owens, whose return erased the four-point deficit in a matter of seconds in the fourth. “That’s why he is on all of our special teams like he is. He scored on a long touchdown pass last week, so he’s got a couple of scores, but not like he is used to because he doesn’t get it as much. He was pretty excited, we were all pretty excited for him last night.”

Winning the 2-4A title, and earning a home playoff game to start the playoffs, has been the goal for the Commodores all season long, even when they

started the year with backto-back losses.

“I think every team has its own identity and I thought (Friday) night was just a great moment for us as a football team,” Fair said.

“We were down 7-0 in the third quarter and the last time we were down 7-0 in the third quarter was to Grenada. We fought and fought and fought but it didn’t work out for us. We’re down midway through the third the other night, and we found a way to win the football game, and against a good team. All those moments throughout your season help build your character. I like what I’m seeing. Our guys never panicked, they never quit and found a way to make a play

Fair also praised his coaching staff for not flinching either when the Warriors had the lead.

“When it gets tough, they just coach harder,” Fair said.

“It’s not an emotional thing or rah rah in their face or anything like that. They say this is what we have to do to win and these are the plays we have to make and get ready because here it comes. Our kids respond well to that. Our coaches are doing a tremendous job, and I feel like I have the best staff that you could imagine.

It really shows in games like that the other night.”

Chargers top Wildcats to make 5A playoffs

CLARKSDALE — Before Oxford’s Chargers made the schedule, Clarksdale Wildcats were leading Division 1-5A in scoring points, and allowing the fewest to oppossing teams.

Not anymore.

Oxford made plays on defense and even more plays on offense to walk away from Crumpton Field with a 27-13 victory over Clarksdale. The victory clinched a playoff berth into the 5A playoffs that begin in three weeks.

Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe and his team knew coming in that Clarksdale (7-3 overall, 3-2 in 15A) was talented and that other people had to step up if Oxford (63, 4-1) was going to win the game.

“The biggest thing for me tonight is that we had a lot of guys step up and make plays,” Cutcliffe said. “When you can do that, it makes it tough on a defense when so many different guys could get the football and step up.”

Among the players that stepped up was JaQuan Webb, who was left alone in the second quarter on a 41-yard pass play from quarterback John Reece McClure. That play gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead.

Webb is playing in just his second game since getting injured against Madison Central early in the season.

Another player who stepped up for Oxford was tight end Joe O’Keefe, a player for the Chargers that has seen limited action due to a foot injury he suffered in the spring. O’Keefe was wide open on both of his touchdown receptions.

He caught a 16-yard pass in the first quarter to give the Chargers an early lead, but arguably his biggest play of his career came on a third-and-13 play late in the fourth quarter. O’Keefe slipped behind the Clarksdale defense and caught a 41-yard pass from McClure to put Oxford up by two possessions with 2:24 remaining in the contest.

“We thought we’d have a chance to get Joe O’Keefe the ball

in some big moments,” Cutcliffe said. “We trusted Joe to step up and make the play. Those were things that we had practiced in that particular situation almost exactly like it happened in the practice field. It’s a credit to our guys to how well they prepared this week.”

Oxford’s defense stepped up when they had to, stopping Clarksdale all five times the Wildcats went for it on fourth down.

The Charger defense also forced three takeaways and most importantly, they didn’t let a dangerous Clarksdale offense run wild all night allowing just two plays that went longer than 20 yards.

“I thought we made plays when we had to make them,” Cutcliffe said. “They have some explosive players on their offense. We were able to prevent them from having big, big plays. That was really great to see. Coming in, they were the leading scoring offense in our district and the leading scoring defense in our district. They are a complete team, so we knew it

would take a complete effort to be able to come out on top.”

Oxford’s other touchdown came in the third quarter on a 2yard run from Hiram Wadlington to give the Chargers the lead they would not relinquish at 20-13.

Wadlington rushed 28 times for 121 yards as well as the touchdown.

EXTRA POINTS Clarksdale retired former Oxford assistant coach Terrence Metcalf’s number 79 at halftime.

Metcalf played for Clarksdale from 1995-97 and went on to play for Ole Miss and then the Chicago Bears in the NFL. I think we're going to be really good. We can pitch and I think we can hit really well.”

“It was great competition up there. The pitching was outstanding. I think it made me better to see Friday night and Saturday night pitching. It was humbling, but it was fun,” said Golsan, who ate fresh lobster and even opened it up himself. “That was new for me. It's kind of like a bigger crawfish. A little sweeter, pretty good tasting, too. I tried to keep my Southern hospitality up there, say yes, sir, yes ma'am to everybody. I tried to set an example for Ole Miss up there.”

“If there is a more efficient quarterback around, I would like to see him because Will is doing just a tremendous job,” Fair said. “He puts the ball in positions for our receivers to make plays. They were giving us some underneath stuff, trying to take away the deep ball. We were able to take advantage of that because of Will’s decision making and his arm.”

Last season, Fair coached the Warriors against the Commodores.

He approached this year’s game like any other contest but after the game, he admitted that it was different than anything he had experienced.

“I’ve got one team here that I was just as proud of as I could be of. One that fought through adversity to get the win and then I have a bunch of other kids on the other side that I’ve coached longer than these kids and trying to console a little bit,” Fair said. “That was a little different. We got the win and it was big for us.”

Up next for Lafayette is the regular season finale at Byhalia. The first Friday in November, the Commodores will host the fourth-place team from Division 1-4A. Fair felt it was good to get a challenge late in the year heading into the playoffs.

“It helps build your playoff run. Hopefully games like this is something we can come back to. It hasn’t always been easy. We got down in the second half against Senatobia, but we found a way,” Fair said. “You never know when need stuff like that. I think it just revels a lot of character from our young men. As a coach, you wish they would be all easy but they never will be.

I think it’s good for us. I’m glad its behind us and we’re ready to move on now.”

Ole Miss junior Will Golsan has played all three outfield spots for the Rebels this fall.

Mr. Versatile Golsan’s athletic ability has been key for OM Rebels

Ever since Will Golsan arrived at Ole Miss, his athletic ability has put him in the position to garner significant playing time. Originally recruited as a middle infielder, the former New Hope standout played first base in 2016. He headed to the outfield this fall, and he's caught fly balls in all three spots in the attempt to get a feel for his third new role on defense.

“I like center. You get some open range out there. You're free to run,” Golsan said on what position he likes the best of the three. “I've been out there with Coach (Marc) MacMillan teaching us a lot during early work in practice. It's been fun.”

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco feels confident about Golsan's ability to play anywhere in the infield, and because Golsan is so versatile, he was the best candidate to move into the outfield.

“Will is the epitome of a team guy. He comes here as a shortstop and as a freshman, he plays at second base and then last year as a sophomore, we move him to first base,” Bianco said. “This year, with

so many infielders, we wanted to give him a shot to use his athleticism. He runs so well and he has a good arm. He's really taken well to the outfield. That's not to say that he won't ever move back to the infield. The great thing about great athletes is you move them there for a few innings and the ball finds them and they catch it and throw it over there.”

Golsan has the ability to run well, and Bianco felt like that tool will be utilized more in the outfield.

“Most of the best high school players in the country are shortstops. That's where you put your best player and best athlete,” Bianco said. “When you look at most of our classes, there are more shortstops signed than any other position. And that's not to say that they won't play shortstop or they may move somewhere else. (Kyle) Watson has done a little bit of both.

He's played some infield for us and the first two years he was in the outfield. He has played a lot of infield this fall.”

Last season, Golsan was fourth on the team with a .273 batting average. He drove in 26 runs and had 16 multi-hit games as a freshman, and then three home runs and 31

RBIs this past season in six more games.

“I'm feeling pretty good, seeing the ball well and putting good swings on the ball,” Golsan said about his offense this fall. “It's a process. You have to stay with the process and you have to keep grinding. I'm more worried about quality at bats up there, hitting the ball hard wherever it is and putting a good swing on it.”

One of the top things for Golsan to accomplish this fall was to be a leader to the young freshmen. Golsan said after the second week that they had performed well.

“We're just trying to guid them in the right way and show them what Ole Miss baseball is about,” he said. “You got all four Oxford guys, (Thomas) Dillard, Grae (Kessinger), (Houston) Roth and (Jason) Barber. They're crushing it.

Then you got Cooper (Johnson) and (Ryan) Rolison, (Will) Ethridge, (Thomas) Spinelli, all of them. It's a great class and I'm looking forward to what they can do in the spring.”

The youth movement has caused Golsan to pause about his tenure.

He said that his first two years flew by.

Owens makes huge plays in Commodores’ win over Warriors

Tay Tay Owens is used to finding his way into the end zone. Even in his senior year, with his role changed compared to his first few seasons with the Lafayette Commodores, Owens has remained in the skill positions, waiting for his chance to make a difference.

That moment came in the fourth quarter of Friday night's game with Senatobia. With the Division 2-4A title on the line at William L. Buford Stadium, Owens scored the biggest touchdown of the season, and arguably of his career.

His special teams score not only erased a 14-10 deficit for the Commodores, it proved to be the deciding touchdown in a game that ensured a home game to start the

“Since day one, Tay Tay has said that he is here for the team and that he would play wherever you put me,” Fair said. “I thought we needed him on the defensive side of the ball and he took it with a smile on his face and moved over there and made some great plays.

Those pass break ups on a couple of long pass plays were just incredible. They were big plays for us. Then we had him deep on the kickoff return and they kicked it to him, and he scored.”

Owens' return came immediately after Senatobia took the lead. It was a

large swing in momentum to say the least.

“It was huge, I mean really huge,” Fair added.

“Tay Tay caught two or three passes last week and he scored a touchdown. He had another big first down catch, so he's really starting to come into his own in the last part of the season. He's playing well on both sides of the ball.

“And every time he touches, there is always a chance of him scoring with it. That's why he is on our special teams like he is,” Fair added. “On a lot of other football teams, he would be the tailback and we're fortunate enough here that we can play him some other places to help our team. O’Keefe provides spark in OHS offense, win over Wildcats

Oxford tight end Joe O'Keefe caught two touchdown passes to earn this week’s Player of the Week honor.

CLARKSDALE – Joe O’Keefe had plenty of ups and downs over the last few months. He was the starting tight end entering spring practice for Oxford, but an injury quickly changed all of that for him.

“I was the starting tight end, but I suffered a foot injury and I was out all summer,” O’Keefe said about his road to recovery. “Since I’ve been back at the beginning of the season, it’s just been a long grind trying to get back into the starting lineup, trying to get reps, trying to get back onto the field.”

All of the hard work to get healthy has

started to pay off. In the game against Clarksdale, he had two big receptions for 48 yards.

He also scored the first two touchdowns of his high school career, including a 32-yard reception on a third-and-13 play late in the fourth quarter to seal a 27-13 victory. The effort earned him this week’s Player of the Week for Oxford. O’Keefe had just 43 career reception yards on five catches entering the contest.

Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe had nothing but good things to say about O’Keefe and about his work ethic.

“Joe really had a great season last year behind Zach (Cousar) and got to play in some big moments,” Cutcliffe said. “He really earned our trust. He had a great spring and

then was set back with an injury. It took him a while to get over that. Joe is really starting to get back into stride. He’s been back a few weeks, but he’s been out since the spring. We are just now starting to see what Joe can do because he’s been knocking all the rust off.”

O’Keefe believes he will see more playing time now that he has completely recovered from his injury and that he has proven to make the plays when called upon in the Charger offense.

“I really do think that they found a place for me,” O’Keefe said about his place in the offense. “It is working to my strengths. They know what I can do, I know what I can do.

They’re using it to our advantage.”
