Honoring Our Veterans
Tradition continues…
Beautiful blue skies, Old Glory waving in the breeze and small white crosses naming our local veterans, both family and comrades, who because of their service to America made it possible for us to be live in this land of the free and home of the brave.
Local Commander of Cowl-Scott American Legion Post #80
Mike Durell gave the welcome and the invocation before Leon
Boy Scout Troop #102 laid the wreath honoring all who served their country in the past and those still keeping watch at home and in foreign lands.
Annalise Minnick sang the National Anthem. Sgt. Maj. Robert Bell gave the message reminding the audience that our service men and women’s time in their respective branches should be talked about today to remind those that played golf, had a barbeque or spent time on a lake why they were
able to do so.
CD band student, Anden Hall, played taps.
Color bearers and guards of Post 80 were (pictured from left) –Billie Weable, Dennis Martin, Fred Cox, Steve Bettin, Steve Willis, Joe Short, Bob Redman, and Pat Gober.
Many organizations and invididuals spent many hours to make the Leon Cemetery look so beautiful. These included the City of Leon employees, Homeschool families placed the small flags, CD teachers Rosa Sondag and Calieb Kistler and their FFA and TSA students placed the large flags and white crosses and Scoutmaster Joshua Bragg and Leon Boy
Scout Troop 102. “As Americans, we should all remember that freedome isn’t free,” stated Com-
mander Durell. “It’s only possible because our fallen heroes have paid the ultimate price which enables us to
have ceremonies and observances like this in communities across our great country.”

This state-of-theart machine is designed to increase efficiency, improve productivity and maximize diagnostic potential while keeping your experience and comfort in mind. As we train staff, and bring the machine online in mid-June, we will utilize advanced applications that allow for significant expansion of abdominal examinations including exams not typically performed today such as: multi-phase liver, liver fat quantifications and iron loading, advanced female pelvis imaging, rectal cancer staging, prostate examinations; and significant expansion of neurological and MSK imaging in the presence of metal implants.
Other capabilities that are included will aid in the ability to complete a quality, routine exam. The features of this scanner allow for 1) free breathing acquisition techniques for those who cannot comply due to health or hearing impairment or those who are unable to comprehend typical breath hold commands; 2) motion elimination techniques for those unable to hold still due to physiologic or pulsatile motion; 3) rapid scanning techniques for those unable or unwilling (anxious or claustrophobic) to withstand long scans (in and out in 5, 10, or 15 minutes for many exams); 4) silent scan capabilities for those intolerant of loud noise; and 5) the ability to image Cortical Bone (CT like imaging) for those
in need of bone imaging that cannot/should not be exposed to ionizing radiation. Bringing this MRI unit and service inhouse will increase our patient satisfaction by allowing you to travel within the hospital building to our scanner, versus needing to travel outside to the mobile truck in all kinds of weather, including oppressive summer heat and rain, or the harsh

She devoted her whole life to serving and loving all who entered her home. It was a gift for her family and friends to do the same for her during her final years.
Fran was born as a delightful surprise to her parents, Ira Vere and Cora Beatrice Hembry Bennett. She lived a very joyful child-
hood, raised by her parents and older siblings. She grew up attending Leon Methodist Church and graduated from Leon High School in 1959. Fran is survived by her husband, Larry, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage of 62 years. Fran and Larry met on November 18, 1958. Larry and his best friend, Elmer, were hanging around outside the Leon school, trying to find a gal for Larry. They saw Fran outside her school with her friends, and Larry picked her out of all the girls as his future girlfriend. Fran knew by the second date that he was the man for her. Together they raised four cherished children: Cindy, Mellony, John, and Todd. Fran’s life on the farm was rich with simple joys. She breathed life into everything she touched, from her garden to her vibrant lawn filled with flowers to the grandchildren she babysat. She enjoyed reading books, painting ceramics, decorating cakes, and bird watching. She and Larry had a Christmas tree farm and blessed the community with real trees each winter. She enjoyed decorating her spacious yard with every Christmas decoration she could find. She loved parties, from little tea parties with great-grandkids to Sunday dinners to grand Easter egg hunts to hosting the Siefkas Family Reunion each fall. Fran was the reigning skee-ball champion over Brock. She took many happy family vacations to Estes Park, CO and enjoyed wintering in Texas with Larry. The love for children extended outside of the family when Fran and Larry opened their home to neighbor kids, Sandy (Seniva) Lily, Loren, and Arthur Seniva to come and live with them. The time spent in their home made Sandy, Loren and Arthur become like part of the family. Fran’s commitment to her community

MELINDA MACKEYWith the tornado in Greenfield, we see the destruction that can happen. Tornadoes in Iowa are a strange thing. We have watches issued quite often. We also will have warnings issued and not much happens. Those are the things that condition us to feel like nothing will happen. The tornado that ripped through the middle of Greenfield was on the ground for one minute. It developed, dropped, wiped out a path through Greenfield. I've heard amazing stories of survival and horrific stories from the destruction. We can learn from everything that has happened. Every tornado warning should be taken seriously. I also had people reach out wanting to donate. I ended up with a car load, like many many others. I am, and so were the people that received the items-thankful. I know these were not things you just had lying around. You all drove to the store and selected items. It's heartwarming to see so much generosity for people you've never
met. Greenfield has been able to stock up a huge supply of items. At this time the best thing you can do is either offer your physical help, or donate through an online link. I did deliver all the items to my contact, Bre in Creston. Some things were given directly to a young family with two small children. This family had lost everything and was lucky enough to get into a rental house. Thankfully I was able to connect with them directly through a mutual friend.
This tornado is being called the deadliest tornado in the US so far in 2024. I'm reminded of a conversation I had years ago with someone that said to me, "How thankful would you be if someone took everything you have from you; your home, your things, your family; and turned around and gave it right back?"
Don't forget about all the great events going on for Fun Day on Saturday! There is a complete schedule on the Grand River Facebook page.
Have a great week and I'll see a lot of you Saturday!!

It was a good start to the week in Davis City Villa. On Monday, the Red Way students from CDCS came to town to clean our community center. The Red Way is a school sponsored activity that has the students going out into the community doing good deeds. The DC Council appreciates all your hard work!
Tuesday night! Wowsa! I know there were some trees down and probably other damages that I’m not aware of locally, but I’d say we truly ‘dodged a bullet’. The weather persons were on the air non-stop all evening long and were able to warn their watchers to take cover. That storm swept through Iowa with more than one tornado touching down and brought total devastation to Greenfield, IA. Continue your prayers for the Greenfield residents. Wednesday was my day to socialize and I did exactly that. There was morning coffee at the DC cafe with Annette Boswell, Jackie Willis, Paula Howell, Betty Fox, Evelyn Hamilton, Linda
Smith, Carol Proctor and Linda Boothe. It wasn’t one of our dress up days but we had a surprise visit from Barbie aka Carol Proctor. Her costume was complete with bell bottoms, long blonde hair and pink sunglasses. Ya just never know when someone famous is going to grace our coffee table. In the afternoon, I met my Osceola group (Verla Cole, Pam Kent and Lou Fry) in Decatur for a lunch that was delish. We then went outside to a picnic table and Verla shared her left over cupcakes and fried pies from a graduation she had attended. Then, the light bulb came on…why don’t we cruise into Leon and check out Lizzie’s Kitchen north of Leon?
We were all impressed with her set up and, of course, bought some of her goodies. This coming weekend will be extended to Monday because of Memorial Day..the official start to summer.
Makes me wonder what we should call these 80 degree days we’ve had the last few weeks. Saturday and Sunday have been absolutely beautiful so hope you had that camper stocked and ready to roll. Lamoni had their All School Reunion and Leon held class reunions for the classes of ’72, ’73 and ’74 over the Memorial Day weekend. I had an informant share with me that I got some compliments on my Davis City article. I just want to thank all my readers and let you alumni know that I appreciate you reading my article. It’s a dirty job and somebody has to do it. lol I love reunions and I want to remind South School employees that we will be having our 3rd Annual Reunion on Friday, August 2nd. We will meet at the Main Street Brick House at noon. Bring your favorite ‘finger food’ so we can chat, laugh, reminisce, catch up on all

New Look Cardinals Get Ready for Summer Season
By Ryan StonebrakerThe Central Decatur Cardinals will have a new look team this year after running the table and finishing the 2023 POI season 13-0 and Conference Champs. The Cardinals had a 20-5 record last year, equaling their win total of 20 in the 2018 season. Those two 20-win seasons are the only seasons with 20 or more wins since the 2007 season.
The Cardinals graduated five from last year's team including two of the top three hitters in first-team POI outfielders Spencer Smith and Kalvin Brown. Smith hit .351 and was second in RBI’s with 29 and third in stolen bases with 20, and Brown hit .377 with 21 RBI’s and 22 stolen bases, and 26 hits. Also graduating were Cannon Rivera and Daniel Payne.
Pitching took a hit for the Cardinals too as ace Landon McKillip graduated early to enroll at Graceland University to play baseball. McKillip was 6-1 in 10 games with an ERA of 1.32 with 39 strikeouts and eight walks. He gave up only seven earned runs in 37 innings. Also gone are sec-
ond ace Jaxon Cornett who graduated and played baseball at Ellsworth Community College. Cornett had a record of 5-2 in eight starts with a 1.31 ERA in a team-high 42 innings. He had 77 strikeouts and 37 walks. Both Cornett and McKillip were firstteam All-POI picks last year with Cornett a unanimous selection. McKillip batted .377
with 26 hits, 11 RBIs, and a team-high 27 steals.
Jayden Broich and Dean Layten did not go out this year after combining to start seven games and pitch in nearly 42 innings. Broich was a second-team All-POI pick last year.
A big loss on the offensive side of the diamond was senior Kale Rockhold, a first-team All-POI catcher last
year, did not go out. Rockhold batted .405 with 30 hits, 2 home runs, and 36 RBI’s.
Junior Lane Leeper also did not go out after earning honorable mention honors last year. Leeper also had 24 steals and a .283 average with 17 hits and 17 RBIs.
Head Coach Shane Akers returns with seniors Creyton Ogier and Joe Sheetz to lead
second-leading hitter with a .364 average, 24 hits, 11 RBIs, and nine extra-base hits. She also led the team in stolen bases with 21. Horn batted .400 in 16 games with 12 hits and Jones batted .156 with ten hits a home run and seven RBI’s. Also not returning this year are Quinn Kernen and Piper Teel.
the Cardinals. Sheetz is the top pitcher after a 3-0 record and 4.13 ERA in four starts. He also batted .182. Ogier batted .157 and had eight hits and eight RBIs. Others back are juniors John Armbrester and Reese O’Dell, sophomore Ira Blades, and freshman Macson Lindsey. Newcomers to the team are juniors Brock Binkley, Peyton Davis, and Zander Clark; sophomores Damien
This year’s team will have a youth movement of sorts as all but four players will be sophomores or younger. There will be a pair of seniors out in Maddison Jessen and Kiley Zion.
Also, a pair of juniors are out in Addy Schreck and Kaycee Boyce. Schreck was fifth on the team in batting with an average of .253 with 19 hits a home run, and 14 RBI’s while Boyce was fourth on the team in batting with an average of .275 with 19 hits and a teamhigh 21 RBI’s.
The largest class on the Cardinals’ roster this year is their sophomore class with seven out. They are Leighanna Bundt, Cortlynn Cook, Morgan Havlik, Rilee Alley, Morgan Buckingham, Mili Waugh, and Breece Cornett. Cook and Alley played the most last year out of that group as Cook was the third leading batter with a .300 average and 21 hits while Alley played in 24 games, starting in 21 of those.
Three freshmen out are Soiyer Smith,
Easton, Lyric Friend, and Cody Burton and 8th graders Landon Palmer, Beau Waugh, Landry Johnson, and Michael Jessen along with Assistant Coach Larry Johnson. Central Decatur will play non-conference games this year against Grand View Christian, Moravia, Moulten-Udell, Murray, Melcher-Dallas, Mormon Trail, Clarke, (continued on page 7)

Aubri Perkins, and Aubrey Adams. Of those, Smith played the most as the primary catcher last season. Smith led CD in batting with a .330 average, 29 hits, and 17 runs scored. She was named to the second-team All-POI all-conference list last year. The Cardinals have
four eighth graders on the roster this year. They are Piper Helton, Landi Leeper, Aubrey Schreck, and Lakyn Mundy. The Cardinals play non-conference games against Moravia, Grand View Christian, Moulten-Udell, Mormon Trail, Lamoni, Clarke, and Chariton. The Cardinals play in a weekend tournament on May 31 and June 1 at Murray.
Rough Season Opener for Cardinals at SEW
By Ryan StonebrakerThe Central Decatur softball team knew they would have their work cut out for them in their 2024 season opener at Milo. SEW, a perennial POI contender and Class 1A state contender was the season-opening foe for the Cardinals. It was also the first varsity game for new head coach Maizee Lindsey. There, the Warhawks would beat CD, 11-1 in six innings. The win was the tenth straight for SEW over Central Decatur dating back to the 2019 season. The Cardinals had three hits in the game and scored their only run in the top of the sixth inning. The Cardinals run set the score at 8-1. Cortlyn Cook was 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored. Soiyer Smith had a single and walked. Addy Schreck had two of the five CD walks in the game. Breece Cornett and Mili Waugh also reached base via walks in the game. SEW scored first with a four-run first inning. Two more runs in

In the fifth, the Warhawks would add two more runs for an 8-0 lead. After CD’s run, the Warhawks ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to reach the 10run mercy rule. SEW had eight hits in the game. Belle Ewing led the Warhawks with a 3-for-4 night with a double, RBI, and three runs scored. Cailey Wallace also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cardinals See Two Of First Three Games Postponed
By Ryan StonebrakerThe excitement for the new 2024 season was tempered last week for Central Decatur as two of their first three games were postponed due to weather. The Cardinals did get their first game last Thursday at SEW. The Cardinals were to host Grand View Christian on Wednesday, May 22 in their season opener, but the weather canceled it. That game is postponed until June 26. The Cardinals game at Mount Ayr last Friday, May 24, was postponed due to heavy rains in the Mount Ayr area. That game has not been rescheduled yet. The first game of the year for CD turned out to be the game sandwiched between

CD Red Way Day of Service
By Payton PhillipsIf you walked or drove around the Central Decatur School District towns this past week you undoubtedly noticed how nice our small towns look. Street lines and fire hydrants have a fresh coat of paint, flower beds and playgrounds have been weeded and mulched, storm debris and trash have been cleaned up and there’s a new mural crosswalk on our square. With
hard work and dedication on a long, hot day, Central Decatur students, paraeducators, teachers, administrators and members of the community joined forces and tackled a huge list of community improvement projects in Leon, Decatur, Davis City and Grand River for the yearly Red Way Day of Service.
“Red Way” is the character code of the Central Decatur School District. The code

Iowa State Senator Amy Sinclair Visits Lamoni

Senator Sinclair was the guest speaker for the monthly We the People Tea Party of Southern Iowa meeting at the Lamoni Community Center May 14th. She briefed the attendees on the many accomplishments over the last legislative period. A few of these are laws to: ensure religious protections for Iowans (SF 2095), require a supermajority of the legislators to raise state tax rates in the Iowa Constitution (HJR 2006), provide schools more flexibility to districts to improve school security (HF 2586), and expand Medicaid benefits to pregnant women (SF 2251). Additionally, she pointed to the 3.8% flat tax rate to take effect for Iowans in 2025 and the saving of over 1 billion dollars in additional tax relief, saving Iowa families an average of $800 dollars. Finally, the senator was very proud that Iowa is now rated #3 in the nation for employment opportunities, #5 in teacher salaries, #6 in lowest taxes, and # 7 as best state in which to live. As always, our annual session with Senator Sinclair was informative and punctuated with lively discussions. Our meetings are always open to the public every second Tuesday of the month
