Es strahlt. Es strahlt warm oder hell, doch es soll schöner strahlen, gleißender, unheimlicher. Sehr bald nach der Entdeckung der Radioaktivität und der symbolischen Einordnung (Kosmetik) von Stoffen wie Radium, Polonium und Thorium ins Periodensystem der Elemente hatte die Schönheits- und WellnessIndustrie des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts bereits eine breite Palette strahlender Verheißungen im Angebot. Das ist wahrscheinlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass man dem Geheimnis der seit Jahrhunderten bekannten und beliebten Heilwasserquellen etwa in Jáchymow (St. Joachimsthal), Bad Gastein oder in Hot Springs, Arkansas, auf die Schliche kam. Mit der Entdeckung ihres Radiumgehalts schien die Rezeptur jugendlicher Gesundheit und Schönheit decodiert zu sein und so konnte der kommerzielle Aufstieg der Radioaktivität noch vor den Waffen- und Energietechnologien des Atomzeitalters seit den 40er und 50er Jahren und dem gegenwärtig gewiss blühenden illegalen Handel mit radioaktiven Stoffen in der Schönheitsindustrie beginnen: St. Joachimsthaler Radiumwasser-Zwieback, die radioaktive Zahnpasta Doramed der Berliner Auergesellschaft (bis 1945) oder Burk & Brauns verjüngende Radium-Schokolade mit Reichspatent (1931–1936) sind nur einige Exponate des radioaktiven
Soon after the discovery of radioactivity and the cosmetic classification of elements like radium, polonium and thorium in the Periodic Table of Elements, the early 20th Century’s beauty and wellness industry became wellstocked with radiating promise. This may be ascribed to the healing springs of Jáchymow (St. Joachimsthal), Bad Gastein, or Hot Springs, Arkansas, having fully disclosed themselves. With the discovery of their radium content, a recipe for jevenescent health and beauty was decoded— the rise of radioactivity could begin long before the weapons and energy technologies of the Atomic Age in the 1940s and 50s and the currently blossoming illegal trade in radioactive substances within the beauty industry: radium-water zwieback from St. Joachimsthal, radioactive toothpaste Doramed of the Berlin-based Auergesellschaft (until 1945), or Burk & Braun’s patented juvenescent radium-chocolate (1931–36) are but a few exhibits in the cabinet of radioactive curiosities between the World Wars. Beginning in 1930, the Home Products Company of Denver, Colorado offered Vita Radium Suppositories for male virility enhancement (“his birthright”), an organ stimulant mailed discreetly in a plain wrapper and containing soluble radium, a paste of cocoa butter and an enema for rectal administration, while being “guaranteed entirely harmless”.
