– Ich habe noch nie eine Frau so tanzen gesehen. Was machst Du eigentlich?

– I’ve never seen a woman dance like this. What is it that you do?

– Zur Zeit – einen Katalog zu meiner Schweizer Ausstellung, in der politische Monumente und altgriechische Hymnen in Form von Skulpturen, Gemälden und Videos gezeigt werden. Es wird ein ganz schnelles Buch, in dem die politische Theorie, Kybernetik, diskursive Kunstwissenschaft, Philosophie, Theorie des Subjekts, Medienwissenschaft so wie die schönen pythagoräischen Tonarten verbunden sind und ineinander modulieren, ohne die Strenge des Denkens zugunsten eines lethargischen Konsens aufzugeben. Das Buch ist ein anamorphisches Monument für Bradley Manning: der unschuldige, hochintelligente Jüngling wird mit Einzelhaft und Psychoterror gefoltert, weil er der Welt die Wahrheit über die vietnamesken Aktivitäten der Vereinigten Staaten in Iraq zukommen liess. Unsere Agenda ist es, die Rolle des Homo sapiens vom Parasiten zum Förderer der Physis zu transponieren, das mache nicht nur ich, sondern das ist das, was wir, Künstler, Philosophen, Technologie-Experten und politische Denker in Berlin machen, womit wir der regressiven Zombierung des vorherrschenden Weltmodels erfolgreich widerstehen!

– At the moment, a catalogue to my upcoming Swiss exhibition, in which political monuments and Ancient Greek hymns—in the form of sculptures, paintings, and videos—are examined. It’s gonna be a really fast book, in which political theory, cybernetics, discursive art theory, philosophy, theory of subject, and media science are connected and modulated, like Pythagorean tonality. Without surrendering the rigors of troubled thought to the lethargy of popular mind, my book is an anamorphic monument to Bradley Manning—the innocent, highly intelligent manchild currently being tortured with solitary confinement and psychic disturbance just because he debriefed the world on the Vietnam-esque activities of the US in Iraq. Our agenda is to transpose homo sapiens from parasite to protector of the physis; it’s not just what I do, it’s what we in Berlin—artists, philosophers, technological experts, and political thinkers —do. And by so doing, we resist the regressive zombification of the predominant model of the world.

Jenseits einer funktionalistischen Verherrlichung von Techno-Science oder einer devoten pseudowissenschaftlichen Computer-Kunst, die ihre ontologischen Prämissen überhaupt nicht in Frage stellt, bringt Joulia Strauss die Kunst zurück zur Wissenschaft, indem sie beide von Neuem überdenkt. Die Berliner Künstlerin hat den Versuch unternommen, Ontologie und ein Gedankensystem zusammenzuführen, das sich sowohl der Kybernetik als auch deren neuester Entwicklung, nämlich der Medientheorie, verpflichtet fühlt. Diese von Peter Weibel als „Dritte Kultur“ bezeichnete Konstellation verweist nicht auf die übliche, okzidentale Trennung von épistémè und téchnē – eine künstliche Trennung, die aus rein ökonomischen Gründen von einer merkantilistischen Welt gefördert wurde – sondern vielmehr auf eine paradigmatische Fusion beider. Die Einheit von kulturellem und technischem Wissen, von Zahl, Bild und Mythos, so wie sie im vorklassischem Griechenland exemplifiziert wurde, bildet eine der wichtigsten Grundlagen des künstlerischen Schaffens von Joulia Strauss. So wie Pythagoras, der antike Begründer der mathematischen Analyse der Musik, die Darstellung der harmonischen Intervalle durch einfache Zahlenverhältnisse veranschaulichte, so verkörpern die Modulationsoperationen von Strauss die kosmologischen Konstanten einer Verbindung von Empirie und Geist im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst. Modulation beschreibt in der Musik die Überleitung zu einer anderen Tonart. Diese aber bildet für die Künstlerin ein ausgefaltetes idiosynkratisches System ästhetischer sowie politischer Aktionen, das in mehrere Bereiche des künstlerischen

Hardly a functionalist apotheosis of techno-science or submissive pseudo-scientific computer art that does not question its ontological premises, the work of Joulia Strauss reunites art and science through a systematic process of revaluation. The Berlin-based artist insightfully weaves ontology with a system of thought that is committed to examining cybernetics and its media theory unfoldments. While it is easy to recognize parallels between her work and Peter Weibel’s notion of “Third Culture,” Strauss is not concerned with the occidental separation of épistémè and téchnē—an artificial incision guided by a culture lorded over by mercantile interest—but rather focusses on paradigmatic fusion. The unity of cultural and technological knowledge, of number, image and myth, as exemplified in pre-classical Greece, has always formed the basis of Joulia Strauss’ art. Just as Pythagoras, the father of the mathematical analysis of music, demonstrated the unity of harmonic intervals and simple numerical proportions, Strauss’ “Modulation Operations” embody cosmological constants of empiricism and mind in the context of contemporary art. In music, modulation describes a transition from one mode to another. For an artist, it implies a system of aesthetic and/or political concerns which encroache on multiple domains of artistic practice. Modulation is thus to be understood not only as a mathematical process in music but as an aesthetic and ethical device. The artist has attained a short-circuit between the archaic Greece of Pythagoras and the highly mathematical Europe of Leibniz, Euler and Turing. In so doing, the philosophical and ethical foundations of the modern concinnity of mathematics and mechanics,

10 Daseins eingreift. Modulation ist in diesem Zusammenhang nicht nur als mathematischer Vorgang der Musikpraxis, sondern auch als ästhetische und zugleich ethische Herausforderung zu verstehen. Die Künstlerin unternimmt den Versuch, einen Kurzschluss zwischen dem archaischem Griechenland von Pythagoras und dem hochmathematischen Europa von Leibniz, Euler und Turing zu provozieren. Die philosophischen und ethischen Grundlagen der modernen Zusammenfügung von Mathematik und Mechanik, die zum Computer führte, werden dadurch ans Licht gebracht. Das 2006 und im Rahmen des Projekts Elektrischer Widerstand entstandene computergraphische System der Mathematischen Operationstiere von Joulia Strauss entwickelt sich in den kommenden Jahren zu einem Skulpturensystem, das mathematische Zusammenhänge in verschiedenen bildlichen Darstellungen zeigt: handgeflochtene, netzartige Skulpturen aus Silberdraht, Gemälde, Videoanimationen und musikalische Performances von altgriechischen Hymnen sind unterschiedliche Versionen des gleichen Skulpturensystems. Die Computergrafik greift die reale Welt auf, wobei für die Künstlerin beide Welten unterschiedliche Facetten einer kybernetisch orientierten Gedankenwelt sind. Die Synthetischen Skulpturen existieren in mehreren analog-digitalen Überleitungen: entweder als computergenerierte Gebilde im digitalem Raum, als kinetische Skulpturen im realen Raum oder als eine Reihe von Performances, wie in der Uraufführung des ältesten altgriechischen Musikfragments in Berlin (2010). Während der Darbietung eines Musikfragments aus der Orestie von Euripides verwandelt sich die Künstlerin selbst zu so einem Mathematischen Operationstier. Ihr Kleid ist nach der zentralen Tierfigur auf den Wandmalereien des Thronsaals im Palast von Knossos gestaltet und stellt zugleich eine auf den eigenen Leib geschnittene Musikpartitur dar. Die Skulptur bringt der Künstlerin den Tanz bei. Tanzen sollte hier als

which led to the computer, are illuminated. The computer graphics system Mathematical Operation Animals has, in the years following its development by Strauss in 2006 for the project Electric Resistance, transformed into a sculptural system that translates mathematical operations into a variety of pictorial manifestations: hand-braided silver-mesh sculptures, paintings, video animations and musical performances of Ancient Greek hymns are expressions of the same system of sculpture. Computer graphics engage with the real world, although for the artist both worlds are different facets of a cybernetically oriented world of thought. These Synthetic Sculptures exist in several analogue/digital transformations, either as computergenerated entities in digital space, as kinetic sculptures in physical space or as a series of performances, such as the Inaugural Performance of the oldest Ancient Greek Music Fragment in Berlin (2010). In the latter, the artist transforms herself into a Mathematical Operation Animal while performing a musical fragment from Euripides’ Orestie, the design of her dress inspired by the central animal figure in the mural paintings within the throne room of the palace of Knossos and concomitantly embodying the bespoke music score. This sculpture teaches the artist how to dance. Dance, in this particular sense, is understood as the archaic, stylized and ritualized dance of hymns and chorus dances, i. e., a form of motion which Plato in his Laws found in old Egyptian times and praised over the decadent dance forms of his own time.6 This dance does not represent or substitute anything, rather it transforms humans into living sculptures, soaked in the divine. Strauss does not merely perform but creates a Performance Dress Sculpture which augments the Sculptural System of Mathematical Operation Animals with a physical dimension. In this, one may speak of “images of action,” with images swarming all over the artist’s body. Now the All-Embracing Dorian Sum-Cat, the Depressive Lydian Minus-Dog or the Performance Dress Sculpture

archaischer, stilisierter und ritualisierter Tanz von Hymnen und Chortänzen verstanden werden, eben als eine Form der Bewegung, die Plato in den Gesetzen bei den alten Ägyptern wiederfand und im Gegensatz zu den verfallenen Formen des Tanzes seiner Zeitgenossen lobte.1 Dieser Tanz repräsentiert nicht, er ist nicht stellvertretend für etwas, sondern verwandelt Menschen zu lebendigen, vom Göttlichen durchtränkte Skulpturen. So handelt es sich bei Joulia Strauss weniger um eine Performance als um eine Performancekleidskulptur, die das Skulpturensystem der Mathematischen Operationstiere um die körperliche Dimension erweitert. Dabei kann man von Handlungsbildern sprechen, weil sich in diesem Fall Bilder auf dem Körper der Künstlerin aktualisieren. Gleichzeitig wird eine Grenze zum herkömmlichen Verständnis zur Gattung Performance gezogen. Nun sind die Übergreifende Dorische Summenkatze, der Depressive Lydische Minus-Hund oder eben die Performancekleidskulptur keine Symbole für etwas, sie sind eher als Paradigmen zu verstehen. Giorgio Agambem hat den Begriff des Paradigmas bestimmt als „eine Erkenntnisform, die weder induktiv noch deduktiv, sondern analogisch ist, somit von einem Besonderen zu einem anderen Besonderen fortschreitet. … Im Bereich des Paradigmas gibt es keinen Ursprung und keine archē. Jedes Phänomen ist Ursprung, jedes Bild archaisch.“ 2 Die Mathematischen Operationstiere sind solche Paradigmen, die manifest-artig für eine Neuorientierung der Kunst jenseits eines Diskurses über Repräsentation und dem Kult des Neuen stehen. Die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Musikwissenschaftler Martin Carlé 2009 entwickelte Cat-Notation bildet für das Verständnis der Modulation im Werk von Strauss eine bedeutende Grundlage. Altgriechische Notenzeichen, die aus Buchstaben bestehen, werden durch ein Set von Zeichnungen (ein Set ausdrucksstarker Katzengesichter) ersetzt und in ein 3D-Environment überführt. Ein vortreffliches Beispiel für dieses

aren’t symbols for something, but should rather be understood as “paradigmatic.” Giorgio Agamben has recently described the terminology of the paradigm precisely as a form of “knowledge that is neither inductive nor deductive but analogical. It moves from singularity to singularity. … In the paradigm, there is no origin or archē; every phenomenon is the origin, every image archaic.” 7 The Mathematical Operation Animals are such paradigms, standing manifesto-like for a reorientation of art beyond the discourse of representation and the cult of the new. The Cat Notation—developed in 2009 in collaboration with musicologist Martin Carlé—forms a major basis for the understanding of modulation in the art of Joulia Strauss. It is comprised of Ancient Greek musical notation in letter-form, which is then replaced by a set of drawings (of expressive cat faces) and translated into a 3D-system. An excellent example of this artistic system is found in the video First Delphic Hymn to Apollon (2009). The two Delphic hymns to Apollon, written by Athenaios and Limenios, are generally seen as the most comprehensive of the few preserved examples of Ancient Greek music. They were most probably chiseled into stone at the Athenian treasury in Delphi between 138 and 128 BCE. The different octave classes of pre-classical Greek music form the artist’s reference points. In contrast to the rationalized occidental system of our current music notation, Ancient Greek notation described both mathematical and acoustic intervals. The video navigates through a fairy landscape compiled from views of Delphi. Listening to the song reconstructed from ancient fragments found in the area, the viewer encounters Mathematical Operation Animals proportioned after Pythagorean enharmonic melodies. Mathematical Operation Animals of this sculptural system appear as ecstatic visions differentiated by the specifics of their melodic motifs and geographical positions. The song culminates in a dance of the so-called All-embracing Dorian Sum-Cat, along the tones of a melody that unveils its specific character.

Die beiden delphischen Hymnen an Apollon, verfasst von Athenaios und Limenios, sind die Umfangreichsten der wenigen erhaltenen Beispiele antiker griechischer Musik. Sie wurden am Schatzhaus der Athener in Delphi in Stein gemeißelt und stammen wahrscheinlich aus den Jahren 138 und 128 v. u. Z. Die Oktavgattungen der Musik der vorklassischen Antike sind die Bezugspunkte der Künstlerin. Es handelt sich dabei um bestimmte Intervalle, die in den späteren Tonarten der klassischen Antike und des christlichen Mittelalters nicht mehr vorkommen und eher der physikalischen Intervallfolge angepasst sind. Im Gegensatz zum rationalisierten, okzidentalen System der uns bekannten Musiknotation drückt die altgriechische Notation zugleich mathematische und akustische Intervalle aus. Im Video der Künstlerin navigiert der Betrachter durch eine fantastische Landschaft, die aus verschiedenen Ansichten von Delphi kompiliert wurde. Der Rezipient hört eine von der Künstlerin gesungene Hymne und sieht zeichentrickfilm-artige Tierfiguren, die Mathematischen Operationstiere, welche nach den pythagoräischen enharmonischen Tonarten proportioniert sind. Das Lied kulminiert im Tanz der Übergreifenden Dorischen Summenkatze. Die Glieder des Tieres bewegen sich exakt nach dem melodischen Verlauf der altgriechischen Musik, hiermit wird die Modulation zwischen den Tonarten verbildlicht. Die Übertragung der Schrift auf das Bild und der Musik auf die Skulptur zeigt sich nicht nur als computergeneriertes Gebilde, sondern auch als figürliches Zeichen auf der Maloberfläche. Die Kathartischen Hypolydischen Divisionsschildkröten oder die Depressiven Lydischen Minus-Hunde im Pantheon der Mathematischen Operationstiere finden ihr malerisches Pendant in einer Reihe von Gemälden. Zugleich findet man die Tierfiguren auch als reale Skulpturen, wie die aus Silberdraht zusammengelötete Zweite Delphische Hymne an Apollon (2010). Diese

This transmission of writing-to-image and music-tosculpture is manifest not only as a computer-generated entity but also as a figurative sign on the surface of the painting. The Cathartic Hypolydian Division-Turtles or Depressive Lydian Minus-Dogs, in the pantheon of Mathematical Operation Animals, find their pictorial counterpart in a series of paintings. Concomitantly we find animal figures as sculptures, e.g., the Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon, soldered from silver wire (2010). This sculpture, assembled from animal figures arranged in a circle, articulates the hymn’s modulation structure and thereby becomes the Ancient Greek music hidden behind the notation and eluding our ears. The animals’ arrangement corresponds to the switching between tonalities. An archaic dog carries the melody used in the rituals of 600 BC. It hesitantly touches two turtles, the Lydian mode of part one changes into the Hypolydian of part two and so on. Hence, the sculpture may be understood as a melody frozen in space or, better, music manifests itself as a sculpture in motion, in which the sequence of the animals in a circle represents the sequence of modulations in the music. Therefore, each animal limb signals a moment of transition: The turtle’s fin simultaneously is a dog’s leg which in turn becomes the aristocratic foot of a swan from the Hypophrygian mode. Limbs of the animal bodies display the dynamics of melody and explore the beautiful moments of transition between scales as different states of hybrid beings. Joulia Strauss However, it is also because of its spatial installation that the sculpture—hovering and rotating in the gallery space —forms a paradigm of transition from a 3D computer environment to the real world. The kinetic wire sculpture mimics the constructional system of 3D visualization and animation software. Through a highly specific lighting and spatial arrangement, the wire mesh construction melts into its linear shadows on the wall. Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon is thus perceived as a dematerialized image of temporality.

Skulptur wurde aus in einem Kreis angeordneten Tierfiguren zusammengesetzt, mit dem Ziel, die hinter den Notenzeichen verborgene und sich den Ohren entziehende Modulationsstruktur der Hymne und der altgriechischen Musik überhaupt zu vergegenwärtigen. Die Anordnung der Tiere entspricht der Überleitung von einer Tonart in die andere. Der archaische Hund berührt zögerlich zwei Schildkröten, der lydische erste Teil der Hymne geht in den zweiten hypolydischen Teil über, und so fort. Die Skulptur ist somit als eine im Raum eingefrorene Melodie zu verstehen, oder anders gesagt: Die Musik manifestiert sich als eine Skulptur in Bewegung. Dabei entspricht die Reihenfolge der einzelnen Tierfiguren im Kreis der Modulationssequenz der Musik. Die Glieder der einzelnen Tierfiguren signalisieren Momente der Überleitung: Die Flosse einer Schildkröte wird zugleich die Pfote eines Hundes, welche in der nächsten Sequenz zu einem Schwanenfuß aus der hypophrygischen Tonart wird. Glieder der Tierkörper zeigen die Dynamik des Melos und die schönen Momente der Transformation zwischen den Tonarten (Modulation) als verschiedene Zustände von Mischwesen. Joulia Strauss Die im Ausstellungsraum schwebende und rotierende Skulptur stellt auch aufgrund ihrer räumlichen Anbringung eine Art Paradigma der Überleitung von der 3D-Computerumgebung zum realen Raum dar. Die kinetische Drahtskulptur folgt eher dem Aufbau- und Konstruktionssystem einer 3-D-Visualisierungs- und Animationssoftware. Durch spezifische Beleuchtung und räumliche Anordnung verschmilzt die Drahtkonstruktion mit ihren Schattenlinien an der Wand. Die Zweite Delphische Hymne an Apollon wird so vom Betrachter als entmaterialisiertes Bild von Zeitlichkeit wahrgenommen. Das Skulpturensystem der Mathematischen Operationstiere befreit das Wesen der altgriechischen

The Cat-Notation liberates the essence of ancient Greek music from the prison of representation and reveals the miracle of modulation to us as we experience the alternation of expressively differentiated scales within the same melody through the morphing of one animal into the other. They show how the reliable laws of beauty that exist in the concurrence of music, mathematics and time do now reincarnate in sculpture. Joulia Strauss The archaic beauty of this music corresponds to the archaic, stylised smile and rhythmical ornaments of preclassical Greek sculpture, which according to the artist embodies temporality, i. e., rhythmized duration, and thereby constitutes an emancipation of the threedimensional image from the functions of imaging. Consequently these paradigms become dispositives beyond theism and shamanism and beyond the cultura animi of Cicero or the Christian oikonomia—they are figures of cosmic mathematics, a mathematical/harmonic kosmos (adornment), and are thereby dispositives that embody the Greek unity of logos. The Mathematical Operation Animals are indeed related to Friedrich Kittler’s formulation of the gods. For the media philosopher, gods only exist while they are present, being at the same time operative figures of philosophy, of logos: “Where Heidegger says aletheia, I say Aphrodite; where Heidegger says idea, I say Eros; and where Heidegger says Rome, I say Sexus.” 8 And to claim that the Greek gods were anthropomorphic is false—if anything, the humans of pre-classical Antiquity are theomorphic, as Alain Besançon postulates.9 Alas, man after Hesiod and Homer and with them the fathers of philosophy has lost this belief. The work of Joulia Strauss reminds us of our theomorphic origins. Surely our post-Fordist mentality of making economy the origin of it all stands in the way of such an understanding of art, philosophy and transcendence: “What comes after business art: money or spirit?” queries

Joulia Strauss Damit steht die archaische Schönheit dieser Musik in Korrespondenz zu dem archaischen, stilisierten Lächeln und den rhythmischen Ornamenten der vorklassischen griechischen Skulptur, die für die Künstlerin Zeitlichkeit, d.h. rhythmisierte Dauer, verkörpern können und dadurch eine Emanzipation des dreidimensionalen Bildes von jedweder Abbildungsfunktion bewirken. Diese Paradigmen avancieren zu Dispositiven, die sich jenseits von Theismus und Schamanismus, jenseits der Ciceronischen cultura animi oder der heilchristlichen oikonomia bewegen, sondern Figuren einer kosmischen Mathematik oder eines mathematisch-harmonischen kosmos (Schmucks) sind; Dispositive, die die griechische Einheit des Logos verkörpern. Tatsächlich stehen die ‚Operationstiere‘ den Götterfiguren von Friedrich Kittler sehr nah. Götter existieren für den Medienphilosophen nur in ihrer Präsenzhaftigkeit, zugleich sind sie operative Figuren von Philosophie, eben von Logos: „Wo Heidegger Aletheia sagt, sage ich Aphrodite, wo Heidegger Idea sagt, sage ich Eros, und wo Heidegger Rom sagt, sage ich Sexus.“ 3 Zu sagen, dass die griechischen Götter anthropomorphisch sind, ist falsch, eher sind die Menschen der präklassischen Antike theomorphisch, wie Alain Besançon vortrefflich bemerkt.4 Der Mensch nach Hesiod und Homer und mit ihnen die Väter der Philosophie haben diesen Glauben für immer verloren. Und daran will uns Joulia Strauss erinnern. Gewiss steht unsere postfordistische Mentalität, die Wirtschaft zum Ursprung alles Seins macht, einem

the title-page of the Kunstzeitung, reminding us of Joulia Strauss’ fusion of life, art, science and politics. Born in St. Petersburg and influenced by Timur Novikov (perhaps the most important Russian avant-garde artist after Perestroika), Strauss’ paramount contribution is a fusion of artistic practice and engagement with the collective. Toward this end, the “nouveau-Hellenist” Strauss regularly organizes the Spree-Athens salon in her Berlin studio, with discussions and debates after the fashion of the Greek symposion. Reference to contemporary politics may be found in every aspect of Strauss’ work, as in the already described Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon: The tenth and last part of the sculpture appears as a wild dog (2010 CE) ouroborously finalising the composition by biting into its predecessor’s tail. At the end of the archaic part, the dragon Python “helps” Cultural Revolution and changes the classical part, composed by Limenios, further developing the myth, the hymn, the sculpture. Joulia Strauss For the artist, the Eurocentric sacralization of music is perceived as an abstract distortion, a normalization of physical sound that also stands for the homogenization of culture—a “globalatinization,” as Derrida would have it. The same holds for the canonization of sculpture, which since the time of Calvin has tended only to depict an eidolon, an illusion, or a desecrated image of reality, but never gods, effectively making art a category of nonperilous, harmless representation—it is a limitation that Strauss has vehemently tested: what becomes evident is the attack on the dogma of Universalism, which came to fame in the world of economy and the politics of Globalization, as well as in the fundamental Western iconoclasm which is responsible for the inflation of insignificant images. During the 2011 Transmediale festival in Berlin, Strauss showed her Anamorphic Monument to Bradley Manning.

Für die in St. Petersburg geborene und vom Künstler Timur Novikov (dem vielleicht wichtigsten russischen Avantgardisten nach der Perestroika) beeinflusste Joulia Strauss bleibt die Fusion vom künstlerischem Dasein und die Beschäftigung mit dem Gemeinsamen tonangebend. Tatsächlich organisiert die neue Hellenin Strauss regelmäßig in ihrem Atelier in Berlin den Spree-Athen Salon, wo in symposiastischer Stimmung diskutiert und debattiert wird. Der Bezug auf das zeitgenössische politische Geschehen lässt sich in jedem Aspekt des Werks entdecken. Wie in der bereits beschriebenen Zweiten Delphischen Hymne an Apollon. So tritt der zehnte und letzte Skulpturenteil als ein wilder Hund (2010 n. Chr.) auf. Er beißt in den Schwanz seines Vorgängers und schließt damit die Komposition. Am Ausklang des archaischen Teils „hilft“ der Drache Python der Kulturrevolution und verändert den von Limenios komponierten klassischen Verlauf, um den Mythos, den Hymnos, und die Skulptur fortzuentwickeln. Joulia Strauss Für die Künstlerin bedeutet die eurozentrische Verkirchlichung der Musik eine Art abstrahierende Verzerrung und Normalisierung des physikalischen Klangs, die zugleich eine Homogenisierung der Kultur, eine „Globalatinisierung,“ wie Derrida sagt, darstellt. Die Kanonisierung der Skulptur, die spätestens seit Johannes Calvin entweder ein eidolon, ein Trugbild oder ein entweihtes Abbild der Realität darstellen darf, aber niemals die Götter, und damit Kunst zur Kategorie der ungefährlichen Darstellung (Repräsentation) macht, wird ebenfalls in Frage gestellt. The American IT-specialist and member of the US Army was arrested under suspicion of leaking classified videos and documents to the website Wikileaks and has been incarcerated in solitary confinement since May 2010. Strauss’ piece is an anamorphic portrait of the young man, which aims at restoring the image of this modern hero of a society of free information so distorted by the media. The erstwhile soldier’s portrait becomes visible only by using a cylindrical mirror, thus making anamorphosis yet another dispositive of modulation. The anamorphic politics of the artist draw less on Carl Schmitt’s Political Theology than on the truth politics of the event of Alain Badiou: “Non-imperial art must be as rigorous as a mathematical demonstration, as surprising as an ambush in the night, and as elevated as a star.” 10 Likewise, the artist’s critique of the imperial world order of our time described by Badiou is found in the sculptural gesture of the archaic smile. She created Polonium Advertising Sculpture (2008) after the assassination of former Russian agent-turned-journalist and critic of the Russian apparatus of power Alexander Litvinenko, who had been poisoned with the radioactive substance polonium 210 in 2006. But the artist is also active in the trenches, as during the days of unrest and demonstrations in Athens in 2009, where she sang “Hymn to the Sun,” by ancient Greek kithara player / lyricist Mesomedes (ca. 144 CE), in original notation, to the riot police. The fifth episode of TK News, a collaborative project with Moritz Mattern since 2005, also documents the situation in the city while playing out a scenario that shows Greece after the global Cultural Revolution as a country governed by artists. Monuments of this new world order of “archaic” art without state control are currently growing, everywhere. The work of Joulia Strauss has little to do with functionalized techno-science, bureaucratic philosophy, or the witless formalism of contemporary concept art. It is, in a manner of speaking, archaic, optimistic, and it greets us with the undecidable archaic smile of a kore—

Auf der Transmediale von Berlin 2011 hat Strauss das Anamorphic Monument to Bradley Manning gezeigt. Der US-amerikanische IT-Spezialist und Angehörige der USStreitkräfte wurde unter dem Verdacht verhaftet, Videos und Dokumente kopiert und der Website WikiLeaks zugespielt zu haben, er sitzt seit Mai 2010 in Einzelhaft. Es handelt sich dabei um ein anamorphotisches Porträt des jungen Mannes. Das durch die Medien verzehrte Bild dieses modernen Helden der freien Informationsgesellschaft soll wiederhergestellt werden. Das Porträt des ehemaligen Soldaten wird in der Konstruktion der Künstlerin nur durch den Einsatz eines zylindrisch gewölbten Spiegels erkennbar. Damit avanciert die Anamorphose zu einem weiteren Dispositiv der Modulation. Die anamorphotische Politik der Künstlerin speist sich weniger aus der Politischen Theologie des Staatsrechtlers Carl Schmitt sondern aus der Wahrheitspolitik des Events von Alain Badiou: „Die nicht imperiale Kunst muss so festgefügt sein wie ein Beweis, so überraschend wie ein nächtlicher Hinterhalt und so hoch wie ein Stern.“ 5 Die Kritik der Künstlerin an der imperialen, von Badiou beschriebenen Weltordnung unserer Zeit wird auch durch skulpturale Gesten eines archaischen Lächelns gezeigt. Die Polonium Advertising Sculpture (2008) entstand nach der Ermordung des Agenten, Journalisten und Kritikers des russischen Machtapparates, Alexander Litwinenko, der 2006 mit der radioaktiven Substanz Polonium-210 vergiftet wurde. Die politische Kritik Strauss’ setzt sich auch aktiv auf den Straßen fort: Während der unruhigen Tage der Demonstrationen von 2009 in Athen hat sie Athener Polizisten die Hymne an die Sonne des antiken griechischen Kitharoden und Lyrikers Mesomedes (um 144 n. u.Z.) nach der Originalmusiknotation vorgesungen. In der fünften Folge der seit 2005 in Zusammenarbeit mit

Moritz Mattern entstandenen Reihe TK News wird die Lage der Stadt dokumentiert und gleichzeitig ein Szenario vorgespielt, das Griechenland in einem Zustand nach der globalen Kulturrevolution als ein von Künstlern regiertes Land zeigt. Monumente der neuen Weltordnung „archaischer“ Kunst ohne staatliche Reglementierung entstehen hier überall. Das Werk von Joulia Strauss hat wenig mit funktionalisierter Techno-Wissenschaft, bürokratischer Philosophie oder dem gedankenarmen Formalismus zeitgenössischer Konzeptkunst zu tun. Es ist gewissermaßen archaisch, optimistisch, und es begegnet uns mit dem unbestimmten Lächeln einer Kore. So wie ihr Koúros Narkotikós (2010), der ein Monument für die Junkies von Omonia, einem der zentralen Plätze von Athen, ist, das uns neben dem Porträt von Alan Turing (2000), dem einflussreichsten Pionier der frühen Computerentwicklung und Theoretiker der Informatik, am Eingang der Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Palazzo Liestal begrüßt.

Wer mit dem Gedanken, dass der Präsident die Öffentlichkeit aus einer Vielzahl möglicher Gründe belügt, nicht umgehen kann, kann auf dieser Regierungsebene nicht überleben. Daniel Ellsberg Die am häufigsten gezogene Parallele im Gespräch über den Fall Bradley Manning führt zu Daniel Ellsberg, der vor dem Hintergrund des Vietnam-Krieges die Pentagon Papers geleakt hatte. Wir mögen hoffen – doch der Wandel der letzten dreißig Jahre hat meistens Verschlechterungen gebracht. Die Nixon-Regierung hatte versucht Ellsberg bei einer Kundgebung zu ermorden oder ihn unter dem Espionage Act von 1971 zu lebenslanger Haft zu verurteilen. Die Obama-Administration hält Bradley Manning im Hochsicherheitsgefängnis Quantico gefangen, wo er sowohl körperlicher – Schlafentzug und forcierte Bewegungsunfähigkeit – als auch psychologischer Folter unterzogen wird. Noch skurriler war das Unterfangen der Nixon-Administration Ellsberg zu diskreditieren, indem sie auf der Suche nach „kompromittierenden“ Beweisen in die Praxis seines Psychiaters einbrach und später, ihn während einer Benefizveranstaltung in Washington unter LSD zu setzen versuchte, damit seine Rede wie das zusammenhangslose Gebrabbel eines „nahezu durchgeknallten Drogenfalls“ 11 wirken würde. Eine offensichtliche Parallele kann zu den ausdrücklichen

Daniel Ellsberg The most frequent parallel drawn when talking about the Bradley Manning case is the one with Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers against the background of the Vietnam War. Hope we may, but in the last thirty years change has been for the worse. Nixon’s government sought to assassinate Ellsberg at a rally and tried to have him convicted to life in prison under the Espionage Act of 1971. The Obama administration is holding Bradley Manning in Quantico, a high security prison, where he is subjected to both physical—sleep deprivation and forced immobility—and psychological torture. On a wackier note, the Nixon administration also sought to discredit Ellsberg by breaking in to his psychiatrist’s office in search for ‘compromising’ evidence and later attempted to drug him with LSD at a Washington fund-raising dinner so his speech would seem the incoherent babble of a “near burnt-out drug case.” 14 An obvious parallel can be drawn with the conspicuous accusations of rape that were filed against Julian Assange after Wikileaks released the Embassy Cables.

Der neue Präsident der Demokraten wurde für Bush, was Blair für Thatcher war: Er machte die Anomalie zum Paradigma. Die Aussetzung des Rechts auf Habeas Corpus (das Recht auf Schutz vor willkürlicher Inhaftierung) durch Bushs Erklärung des Ausnahmezustands und der Ermächtigung des Militärs – um, unter dem kafkaesken Begriff der „unlawful combatants,“ die Internierung von Kriegsgefangenen zu legitimieren – werden heute auf Gefangene aus Gesinnungsgründen ausgeweitet.12 Die Forderung nach der Schließung der Webseite und nach einer Hinrichtung Assanges sind nicht zu überhören. Die Paranoia, welche die amerikanische Politik beherrscht, stellt eine Ochlokratie her, in welcher Gesetzesträger und Bürger durch mediales Bombardement, Demagogie und Anstiftung zu moralischer Panik routinemäßig eingeschüchtert werden. In der daraus resultierenden Kultur der Angst wird Wikileaks als Bedrohung der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung wahrgenommen. Jedoch wenn Hysterie die eine Seite der Medaille ist, bildet Zynismus die andere. Bei allen Drohungen seitens der von der Wirtschaft gesponsorten Rechten bleibt die Linke distanziert. Die Empörungsreserven scheinen aufgebraucht. Das Resultat ist eine abgestumpfte, pragmatische Herangehensweise. Die Leaks trafen auf uneingeschränkt höhnische Ablehnung. Niemand erkannte Mannings politische Motive oder Assanges Theorie der Macht an – auch

Ellsberg was acquitted however, and all plots against him never materialized. The Nixonites behind the persecution attempts were actually forced out of office and later convicted for obstruction of justice and conspiracy. Whereas both Manning and Assange spent time in isolation and are being preemptively held on dubious grounds. Wikileaks was Obama’s symbolic death. The newly elected democrat became for Bush what Blair was for Thatcher: he turned the anomaly into the paradigm. The suspension of the right to habeas corpus – halted by Bush’s declaration of a state of emergency and the executive military powers used to legitimize detaining prisoners of war—under the rather Kafkian term unlawful combatants—are now being extended to prisoners of conscience.15 Calls for the site’s shutdown and Assange’s assassination have also been making themselves heard. The paranoia ruling American politics has effectively created an ochlocracy in which the legitimate authorities and the general citizens are routinely intimidated by a media barrage of demagoguery and incitement to moral panic. Within the resulting culture of fear, Wikileaks is perceived as a threat to the social order. And yet, if hysteria is one side of the coin, its reverse is cynicism. For all the bullying coming from the corporate-sponsored right, the left remains aloof. The reservoir of outrage seems exhausted. A callous—pragmatic—approach has emerged. The leaks met scornful, unfettered dismissal. Nobody gave credit to Manning’s political motifs or Assange’s theory of power —though their actions were by no means gratuitous. The radical revelation reveals nothing: “What is the big deal?” We are told, more often than not. “There is nothing new to be found in those outed cables.” “Don’t we all know already that power is capable of anything?” These common statements are usually used to brush off all political issues while lumping together the released information with wry remarks about Assange’s narcissism and personal thirst for fame. The leaks serve

wenn ihr Handeln begründet ist. Die radikale Enthüllung enthüllt nichts: ‚Das ist doch nichts besonderes‘ wird uns öfter als das Gegenteil gesagt. ‚Es gibt in diesen Cables nichts Neues.‘ ‚Wir wissen doch schon längst, dass Macht zu allem in der Lage ist.‘ Solche Aussagen werden in der Regel benutzt, um alle politischen Angelegenheiten vom Tisch zu fegen, während die veröffentlichten Informationen mit bizarren Bemerkungen über Assanges Narzissmus und persönliche Gier nach Macht in einen Topf geworfen werden. Dieselbe Argumentationsweise macht uns weis, dass die Leaks keinen Zweck haben; in logischer Konsequenz hat die Whistleblower-Seite keine zulässige Funktion. Genau hier treffen sich die Reaktionen beider Seiten des Spektrums, wenn auch in kontrastierender Weise. Implizit gibt es in der Haltung des Zynikers tatsächlich den Ruf nach der Auflösung von Wikileaks, wenn auch wenig leidenschaftlich, eher blasiert. Slavoj Žižek hat darauf hingewiesen, dass Zynismus eine Form von Ideologie ist. Ideologie, wie Althusser angemerkt hat, ist jedoch nicht falsches Bewusstsein; Ideologie ist die imaginäre Beziehung des Subjekts zu seinen realen Produktionsbedingungen. Zynische Ideologie imaginiert, wir wären Mitglieder einer globalen kreativen Klasse in einer klassenlosen Gesellschaft, inmitten des Endes der Geschichte,„der Endpunkt der ideologischen Evolution der Menschheit und die Universalisierung der liberalen westlichen Demokratie als finale Form menschlicher Regierung.“ 13 Die Abschaffung von Wikileaks ist Teil einer groß angelegten Abschaffung von Politik überhaupt und damit der Möglichkeit einer politischen Alternative. Dabei ist Zynismus jedoch nicht Unmoral, sondern eher eine hinterlistige Umkehrung eines Moralismus. Der Zyniker erkennt an, dass das System böse ist, sieht jedoch keinen Ausweg. Offizieller Widerstand ist entweder zwecklos – da er keinen Wandel zur Folge hat – oder bewirkt einen nachteiligen Rückschlag, das heißt, er bewirkt zwar einen Wandel, jedoch nicht zum Guten – z.B. seien Gewerkschaften und Arbeitsrecht, im Grunde schlecht

no purpose, the same reasoning tells us; thus, as a logical outcome, the whistle blower website has no valid function. Here is where the responses from both ends of the spectrum meet, albeit in contrasting styles. Implied in the cynic’s posturing, there is an actual call for Wikileaks dissolution, though a dispassionate, say blasé, one. As Slavoj Žižek pointed out, cynicism is a form of ideology. Ideology, Althusser noted, is not false consciousness; ideology is the imaginary relation of the subject to his real conditions of production. Cynical ideology imagines we are members of a global creative class living in a classless society, amid the end-of-history. “The end point of mankind’s ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.” 16 The dismissal of Wikileaks is part of a bulk dismissal of politics at large and the very possibility of a political alternative. Cynicism is not immorality though, but rather an insidious reversal of moralism. The cynic acknowledges the system is evil yet he sees no way out. Official resistance is either futile—it effects no change whatsoever —or it has an adverse backlash, that is, it effects change yet not for the better, e. g., unions and labour laws are actually bad for workers because they stifle competition. The cynic recognizes, thus, that the only way to bring about change is to change the political conditions of production. Yet such would entail a political revolution. That is where the cynic’s moralism is made manifest: All utopia ends in bloodshed. To want a better world is thus akin to espousing heinous atrocities. Cynical wisdom tells us we are better off with the least of all evils, liberal capitalism. Daniel Ellsberg’s Time magazine cover was titled “The War Exposés: Battle over the Right to Know.” Julian Assange’s featured the malicious caption “Do You Want to Know a Secret?” in which the distinction between political enfranchisement and popular gossiping was

1. Anpassung

For all creatures, adaptation to existent and varying environmental conditions is essential for survival. A „flexible“ ability to adapt to different cultural and social milieus and their respective norms is seen as a sign of intelligence and seems without alternative under pluralistic-multispheric conditions. In an all-toosuccessful adaptation, though, life runs the risk of sabotaging itself, coming too close to homeostasis and heat-death. Through immunological hyperbole, social bonds mutate into self-destructive autoimmune societies, just like exorbitant adaptation and security fetishism inevitably lead to regressions into the zombiehood of employment and other shadowings of the subject.

Antigone’s Beauty

So kopflos dieses verrücktspielende Kind sein mag: Antigone kennt ihre eigene Präzision. Konsequent überhört sie die Stimme Ismenes, die die allgemeine Doxa repräsentiert. Durch Ismene spricht die etablierte Vernunft. Ismene kennt nur die Vorsicht, die Erwägung, den Vergleich. Antigone aber grenzt an den Wahnsinn des Subjekts. Hier liegt ihre von Jacques Lacan beschriebene Schönheit, in ihrer Insistenz und in diesem Leerlauf, die auf die Grenze ihres Lebens hin führen.17

As headless as this crazy child may be: Antigone is aware of her own precision. Consistently she overhears Ismene’s voice, representing the general doxa. What speaks through Ismene is established reason. Ismene knows nothing but caution, contemplation, comparison. Antigone, however, verges on the delusion of the subject. Her beauty, as Jacques Lacan described it, lies in her insistence and her idleness, leading towards the threshold of her life.29

What is essential is that a boundary is overstepped, initially that of the law represented by Creon, which prohibits the burial of her brother Polynices. And yet, this transgression cannot lead into a positive realm beyond the edge. By responding to Creon in his own language, the “language of the state”, or as we may say, reality, Antigone’s politics is, according to Judith Butler, “not of oppositional purity but of the scandalously impure.” 30 She “asserts herself through appropriating the voice of the other, the one to whom she is opposed; thus her autonomy is gained through the appropriation of the authoritative voice of the one she resists, an appropriation that has within it traces of a simultaneous refusal and assimilation of that very authority.” 31 If autonomy exists – an infinitesimal quantum of autonomy – then only as a claim in the midst of real heteronomy.32

Das inkommensurable Maß an Freiheit, das sich Antigone gegenüber Kreon herausnimmt, artikuliert sich nur im Verhältnis zu ihm und der von ihm vertretenen Instanz, die die Autorität des geltenden Gesetzes ist: des „Gesetz des Tages“ (der Polis, der konstituierten Realität), dem man das „Gesetz der Nacht“ (der Götter, der Familie, des Hades) entgegengesetzt hat.22 Das antigoneische Begehren ist das Begehren nach einer Autonomie, die ins Heteronome eingelassen bleibt, Autonomie von dieser Welt, wenn man so sagen kann, dem Heteronomen als dem mundanen Nomos zugewandte Autonomie.23 Es gibt so etwas wie Selbstbestimmung nur in der Öffnung auf Fremdbestimmtheit, im Hier und Jetzt der kodifizierten Realität. Freiheit ist nur lesbar im Verhältnis zu objektiver Unfreiheit, Souveränität ist nichts als ein Modus faktischen Mangels an Souveränität. „Man sollte,“ sagt Jean-Luc Nancy einmal, „der Autonomie nicht die Heteronomie entgegenstellen, die zusammen ein Paar ergeben. Heteronom gegenüber einem anderen Subjekt zu sein, das selbst autonom ist, ändert nichts – egal ob sich dieses andere Autonome ‚Gott’, ‚Markt’ ‚Technik’ oder ‚Leben’ nennt. Um einen Weg zu bahnen, könnte man das Wort Exonomie wagen. In diesem Wort klingt ein Gesetz an, das weder Gesetz des Selben noch des Anderen wäre, sondern das für den einen wie den anderen nicht anzueignen ist. Wie die Exogamie aus der Verwandtschaft hinaustritt, so tritt die Exonomie aus der binären Familiarität des-Einen-und-des-Anderen

One cannot help but to compromise oneself. One is already compromised. No subject is ever intact (or, as Adorno puts it: “None is tabula rasa.” 33). There is no integrity untouched by the facts. The incommensurable measure of freedom, which Antigone allows herself despite Creon, articulates itself only in relation to him and the authority represented by him, i. e., the authority of the effective law: the “law of the day” (of the polis, the constituted reality), which has been contrasted with the “law of the night” (of gods, family, Hades).34 The antigonistic desire is desire for autonomy, embedded into the heteronomous, an autonomy from this world, if you will, one turned towards the heteronomous as the mundane nomos.35 Something like self-determination can only exist with a window towards heteronomy, in the here and now of codified reality. Freedom is readable only in relation to objective non-freedom, sovereignty is nothing but a mode of the factual lack of sovereignty. “We will,” Jean-Luc Nancy once said, “not oppose autonomy with heteronomy, with which it forms a pair. Being heteronomous toward another subject that is itself autonomous changes nothing, regardless of whether this other autonomous thing is named god, the market, technics, or life. But, in order to open a new path, we could try out the word exonomy. This word would evoke a law that would not be the law of the same or of the other, but one that would be unappropriate by either the same or the other. Just as exogamy goes outside of kinship, exonomy moves out of the binary familiarity of the self and the other.” 36 Instead of rejecting the realities given, Antigone relates to them by objecting to them. At the very threshold of the law she insists on the threshold. She does so beautifully (and gracefully and sexily): she withdraws from both the assimilation to the extant and the sublimation into the beyond. She takes on the burden of the threshold, as if she knew that, in doing so, she opens herself up towards the unliveable and her death.

Es geht nicht um höhere Werte, es geht auch nicht um ein dem menschlichen überlegenes göttliches Gesetz. Nichteinmal um einen kindischen Heroismus, oder, wie wir heute sagen würden, um narzisstischen radical chic. Es geht um den Riß, den jedes Subjekt teilt: in ein Subjekt und ein Objekt, in einen spontanen Agenten und einen rezeptiven Empfänger, in ein in seiner Immanenz verstricktes Tier und einen die Immanenz durchbohrenden Vektor. Antigone bewegt sich in der Ebene einer von immanenter Transzendenz durchlöcherten Immanenz.25 Das ist der brüchige Boden einer um ihre inkommensurablen Anteile erweiterten Realität. Alles, was sie angeht, ihr Begehren, ihre Gewissheiten und Ungewissheiten, geschieht im Hier und Jetzt einer Welt ohne letzte Konsistenz. Doch ist diese Welt ohne Ausgang kein determinierter Raum. Ihr eignet eine Instabilität, die das Subjekt seiner eigenen Inkonsistenz versichert. Was indiziert diese Inkonsistenz anderes als die Evidenz/Wahrheit des Subjekts, nicht vollends Objekt eines Determinantengewebes zu sein? Könnte Antigones Evidenz in dieser nichtidealistischen Konzeption von Freiheit liegen: in einer Freiheitsbehauptung, die alle Stadien objektiver Unfreiheit durchläuft? Es gibt da den Appell zu einer gewissen Resistenz und Freiheit, der sich mit Antigone verbindet. Antigone sperrt sich der etablierten Ordnung, um auf ihrem eigenen Kopf zu insistieren, so kopflos und

Now one cannot sacrifice one’s life to the unliveable without being a lofty idiot. The philosophical perspective into which the antigonistic subject puts itself is not transcendence. It’s neither about higher values nor about a divine law superior to a human one. It’s not even about a childish heroism, or, as we would say today, about narcissistic radical chic. It is about the cleft dividing each and every subject: into subject and object, into a spontaneous agent and a perceptive receptor, into an animal ensnared in its immanence and a vector penetrating this immanence. Antigone moves on a level of a certain immanence perforated by immanent trancendence.37 This is the frail ground of a reality expanded by its incommensurable parts. Everything about her, her desire, her certainties and uncertainties, happens in the here and now of a world without any ultimate consistency. However, this world without outcome is no determined space. It is equipped with an instability, which reassures the subject in its own inconsistency. What could this inconsistency indicate but the evidence/truth of the subject, as not being completely the object of a web of determinants? Could Antigone’s evidence lie in this nonidealistic conception of freedom: in a claim of freedom, which runs through all the stages of objective nonfreedom? There is the appeal for a certain kind of resistance and freedom connected to Antigone. Antigone barricades herself from the established order, in order to instist on her own head, head- and reckless as this might seem. Antigone’s evidence lies in her acceleration towards non-sense, which constitutes the truth of her situation. “Evidence refers to what is obvious, what makes sense, what is striking and, by the same token, opens and gives a chance and an opportunity to meaning. Its truth is something that grips and does not have to correspond to any given criteria. Nor does evidence work as unconcealment, for it always keeps a secret or an essential reserve: its very light is reserved, and its provenance.” 38 The fascination with Antigone is related to this light, this evidence, which obscures its sense by “casting different lights on the familiar,” 39 as Adorno calls it, or, as

Es ist dies auch keine Enthüllung, denn die Evidenz hütet immer ein Geheimnis oder eine essentielle Reserve: die Reserve ihres Lichts selbst und seiner Abkunft.“ 26 Die Faszination Antigone, hat mit diesem Licht, mit dieser Evidenz zu tun, die ihren Sinn verdunkelt, indem sie, wie Adorno es nennt, eine „Umbelichtung des Vertrauten“ 27 einleitet, oder, wie Wittgenstein einmal sagt, ein „neues Licht auf die Tatsachen wirft.“ 28 Eine Wahrheit, die keinem gegebenen Kriterium korrespondieren muß, kann nur eine gesetzlose Wahrheit sein. Blinde oder kopflose Wahrheit, der sich ein verrücktspielendes Mädchen verschreibt. Eine Wahrheit, die in keinem Wissen gründet und deshalb unbewiesen und ungerechtfertigt bleibt. Das nennen wir eine Evidenz: eine grundlose, abgründige, dunkle Wahrheit, wie sie die Wahrheit einer Liebe oder einer Leidenschaft sein kann. Es gibt so etwas wie präzise Leidenschaften, die ihre Schlüssigkeit aus ihrer Grundlosigkeit beziehen. Nicht weil sie beliebig wären, sondern weil sie in die Wirklichkeit des Subjekts mit einer Wucht intervenieren, die diese Wirklichkeit zu redefinieren zwingt. Die Erfahrung der Philosophie verbindet mit der Erfahrung der Kunst die antigoneische Öffnung auf Evidenzen, die das etablierte Realitätsmodell verdunkeln, um es einer Neubelichtung oder Umbelichtung zu überführen.

DIE SCHÖNHEIT ANTIGONES

Wittgenstein says, “throwing new light on the facts.” 40 A truth which does not need to correspond to given criteria can only be a lawless truth. Blind or headless truth to which a child spiralling out of control commits. A truth founded not on any knowledge, which therefore remains unproven and unjustified. That’s what we call evidence: an unfounded, abysmal, dark truth, like the truth of love or passion. There are things like precise passions, which draw their conclusiveness from their own unfoundedness. Not because they were arbitrary, but because they intervene with the reality of the subject with a momentum which forces this reality to redefine itself. The experience of philosophy connects the experience of art with the antigonistic opening towards evidences, which obscure the established model of reality in order to newly expose or re-illuminate it.

Multiplikationsoktopusse, Meerungeheuer aus der Straße von Messina, in der Odysseus so viele Gefährten verlor, werden heute wie damals nach langem Schlagen ihrer Körper auf die schroffen Felsen der Küste Griechenlands verspeist. Zeus frisst in Adlergestalt an Prometheus’ Leber, jeden Tag, und als Schwan schwängert er Leda, mit, richtig, Zwillingen: Artemis, der Herrin der (mathematischen Operations-)Tiere, und Apollon, dem Musagetes, der die führt, die Künstler zu ihren Werken führen. Tierisches ist den antiken Griechen mitnichten fremd, wohl aber: die Katze. Was tut also die dorische Summenkatze am Peloponnes und in Attika? Einmal sind da die Katzen Athens, fett und träge, die Stadt selbst trägt Sorge dafür, dass sie ernährt und vom Veterinär untersucht werden, zudem kümmern sich Vereine um die felligen Herrinnen der Ruinen – wer sonst könnte so lässig zu jeder Tageszeit über die Akropolis oder das Feld des Zeustempels stolzieren, sich putzen, mit den Jungen spielen. Es gibt ganze Bildbände, die Fotografien von weise dreinschauenden, schlafenden oder mit wildem Blick jagenden Kätzchen vor weißen griechischen Inselhäusern mit blauen Kuppeln zeigen.

Minus-dogs are prowling through Greece. Dogs just like the dogs that tore Aktaion, transformed into a stag by Artemis, to shreds. Multiplication octopusses, sea monsters from the Strait of Messina, where Odysseus lost so many shipmates, then as now are smashed against the jagged rocks of Greece’s coast and eaten. In the guise of an eagle, Zeus devours Prometheus’ liver, each and every day. Disguised as swan he impregnates Leda, with, you guessed it, twins: Artemis, ruler of the (mathematical operation-) animals, and Apollon, the musagetes, guiding those who then guide artists to their deeds. The animalistic is no stranger to the Greeks of old, were it not for the cat. What, then, is the cat o’ sums doing on the Peloponnes and in Attica? Firstly, we have the cats of Athens, fat and sluggish because the city itself guarantees that they be fed and cared for by veterinarians, while volunteer associations also see to the well-being of these furry rulers of the ruins. who else but cats could, day and night, so nonchalantly prance across the Acropolis or Zeus’ temple, cleaning themselves, or playing with their young. There are coffee table booksfull of kittens, wise-looking, sleeping or hunting fiery eyed, against a backdrop of white island houses with blue cupolas. Yet no statue, no marble image, no frieze of antiquity depicts a feline being, and no legend sings of them. So what is it that Joulia Strauss has dragged into her fairy-tale gaudy,

Aber keine Statue, kein Bildwerk aus Marmor, kein Fries der Antike zeigt Katzentiere, keine Legende spricht von ihnen. Was also ist es, was Joulia Strauss da in ihr märchenbuntes, klingendes, rekonstruiertes 3DGriechenland hereingeschleppt hat? Ich behaupte: das verdrängte Andere des antiken Hellas. Hera ist nicht nur kuhäugig, sie muss einst eine Kuh gewesen sein, eine Göttin, in der das mächtige Rind verehrt wird – ein Epitheton der wohlhabenden Insel Euböa ist die Rinderreiche. Athene ist eben auch die Eule, ihr Zeichen. Zeus verwandelt sich in Tierwesen; so, wie sich die Operationstiere ineinander verwandeln bzw. morphen. Eine Raupe verpuppt sich und schlüpft als Schmetterling, das wird in der Biologie als Metamorphose bezeichnet. Ovid erzählt in den Metamorphosen von Menschen und Nymphen, die den Zorn der Götter erregten, Arachne, Narziss, Syrinx: Sie werden in Getier oder Gewächs verwandelt. Anders gesagt, unter dem Griechenland der nach den Gesetzen des Kanons geschaffenen Bildwerke und Säulentempel liegt ein animistisches Schamanenreich verborgen, eines, in dem düstere Mysterien um Vegetationsgottheiten in Eleusis vollzogen werden, in dem blutige Rituale, große Tieropfer, Hekatomben bei Homer, stattfinden, oder in denen rasende Helden Herden schlachten in ihrem von Göttern geschickten Wahn. Dort singen die Reisenden / die Schamanen zwischen den Welten den Übergang, wie Orpheus – und manchmal gelingt die Seelenreise nicht. Dieser lebendige, in den Mythen, Ritualen und Legenden gespeicherte animistische, zoomorphe Grund verbindet Joulias Griechenland mit dem Stamm der naturreligiösen Mari aus der Wolga- und Uralregion, in der sie aufgewachsen ist. Joulia Strauss kommt also gewissermaßen nach Hause, wenn sie nach/durch ein Griechenland als formwandelnde Katze geht. Woher kommt aber die Katze? Aus der älteren, über Jahrtausende vitalen Bewässerungskultur des Alten Ägypten natürlich. In der Stadt Bubastis im Nildelta wurde sie als Göttin Bastet schon zu frühdynastischen

Hera not only has a cow’s eyes, she must have been a cow, a goddess in whom the mighty bovine is worshipped; One epithet of the prosperous island of Euboia is “rich with cattle.” Athena is also the owl, her symbol. Zeus transforms himself into animals, just like operation-animals transform and morph into one another. A caterpillar pupates and emerges as a butterfly —what biology calls metamorphosis. Ovid in his Metamorphosis speaks of humans and nymphs that provoke the wrath of gods—Arachne, Narcissus, Syrinx. They are transformed into animals or plants. In other words, beneath the Greece of the statues and temples created according to the canon‘s law, there lies an animist empire of shamans, one in which umbral mysteries celebrate deities of vegetation in Eleusis, in which blood rituals, animal sacrifices, Homerian hecatombs are being held, or in which manic heroes slaughter whole herds in their god-given furor. There, the traveller/shamans sing the passage between worlds, like Orpheus—and sometimes the transmigration of the souls does not work. This vivid, animist, zoomorphic ground—stored in myths, rituals and legends—connects Joulia’s Greece to the natural religion of the Mari tribe of the Volga and Ural region, where she grew up. When Joulia goes to or through Greece as a shape-shifting cat, she is, in a certain way, coming home. But where does the cat come from? Naturally, from the even more ancient irrigation culture—vital for millennia —of Ancient Egypt. In the city of Bubastis in the Nile Delta she had already been worshipped as goddess Bastet since the early dynastic period around 3000 BC. Twice a year, in relation to the flooding of the Nile, as Herodot reports, a drunken feast, frolicsome and erotically charged, was celebrated in her honor. Visitors to the temple could purchase cats for the purpose of sacrifice, cats that had been raised there, which were then killed and mummified by priests and lain to rest in spectral

Zweimal jährlich, im Zusammenhang mit den Nilüberschwemmungen, wurde ein trunkenes Fest zu Ehren der Göttin gefeiert, ausgelassen und erotisch aufgeladen, Herodot berichtet davon. Zu Opferzwecken konnten Besucher des Tempels dort aufgezogene Katzen kaufen, Priester töteten und mumifizierten die Tiere, die dann an einem besonderen Ort in spezielle Katzengrabkammern gelegt wurden; hunderte solcher mumifizierten Katzenmumien hat man im Tal der Könige gefunden, oft ohne dass Katzenüberreste darin waren, eine Art früher Reliquienschwindel. Das antike Griechenland ist nicht, nach den „Dark Ages“ in Folge des Zusammenbruchs minoisch-mykenischer Kultur (das Bild des Hunde-Kleides stammt aus Knossos), aus dem Nichts entstanden, vielmehr hat es kluge Anleihen genommen, die Schriftzeichen der Phönizier verwertet, das Wissen der Ägypter genutzt: Pythagoras, nach dessen Oberton-Verhältnissen die mathematischen Operationstiere gestaltet sind, hat seinen Satz nicht selbst erfinden müssen. Er konnte vermutlich auf seinen Reisen lernen, wie man in Ägypten nach der Nilüberschwemmung das Land neu vermaß mittels der Summe des Quadrates der Katheten, die dem Quadrat der Hypothenuse entsprechen. Er oder seine Schüler haben aber dieses Wissen verallgemeinert und in ein System gebracht; so wie sie die Schriftzeichen in ein Ziffern- und Notenschriftsystem übertrugen, das es möglich macht, altgriechische Musikfragmente zu rekonstruieren und hörbar zu machen: In Zeichen gespeicherter Klang, aus einer anderen Zeit gefallen, das ist so viel Romantik (ein Bildnis zu Sais), dass es einen schaudert und rührt. Das Kätzchen Psipsina ist der dunkle Grund des griechischen Denkens. Es ist nicht der platonische intellektuelle Eros, eher die dunkle Erotik von Göttinnen, die aus ihrem Schoß Leben und Tod zeugen, man denke an den Zusammenfall von Kosenamen für die Katzenviecher und das weibliche Genital in mehreren

feline burial chambers; hundreds of these cat-mummies were found in the Valley of the Kings, often not containing any cats at all—some sort of early speculative relic chicanery. Ancient Greece was not created ex nihilo after the Dark Ages following the collapse of Minoic-Mycenic culture (the image of the dog-cloth hails from Knossos). But it has made many a smart borrowing, utilising the Phoenician writing system, and adapting Egyptian knowledge: Pythagoras, after whose harmonic proportions the mathematical operation-animals are designed, did not need to invent his theorem himself. Presumably, he was able to learn during the course of his travels how the Egyptians re-charted their land after the flooding of the Nile by the sum of the square of the two legs of a right-angled triangle, which equals the square of the hypothenuse. He and/or his students generalised this knowledge and integrated it into a system, just as they translated their letters into a numerical/musical system, that makes it possible to reconstruct and make audible ancient Greek musical fragments: sound stored in symbols, fallen out of a different time—so romantic (an image at Sais) it makes us shiver. The kitten Psipsina is the dark foundation of Greek thought. It‘s not the platonically intellectual Eros, but the dark erotism of goddesses, creating life and death from their womb. Consider the coincidence of pet names for feline creatures and female genitalia in various languages. The limber animal recalls the enbalmed creature-gods of the Nile. It alludes to the ritual sacrifice of goats, a practice that still resonates in the word tragedy, this highest form of poetry, as Aristotle describes it in his Poetics. If we follow Joulia Strauss into her cosmos, we realize that theatre and mask are always just Kippbilder (multistable images) of reality, or an anamorphosis. The staging of the world is not there to be artificially stopped or to glamourise anything. The beauty Joulia Strauss is seeking shall elicit nothing less than a better world, created in accordance with the laws of proportion and thereby more beautiful.

Das geschmeidige Tier verweist auf die einbalsamierten Tiergötter des Nil, auf Opferrituale; auf die Bocksopfer, die noch in dem Wort Tragödie, der höchsten Form des Dichtens, nach Aristoteles’ Poetik, schwingen. Folgt man Joulia Strauss in ihren Kosmos, wird kenntlich, dass Theater und Maske immer nur ein Kippbild der Wirklichkeit sind, oder eine Anamorphose, und dass mit der Inszenierung die Welt nicht künstlich angehalten und verschönt werden soll – die Schönheit, die Joulia Strauss sucht, soll eine bessere, nach grundlegenden Gesetzen des rechten Maßes geschaffene und somit schönere Welt hervorlocken, nicht weniger. Zu den Gründungsmythen Athens – in dem das Dionysostheater bis heute zu bestaunen ist, Ort der Tragödienaufführungen, die Gemeinschaft bildende Rituale eines Stadtstaates waren, sei es als Reinigung von den Leidenschaften, als Einführung der Jünglinge in die Polis-Bürgerschaft oder Ritual zu Ehren des RauschGottes – gehört auch diese Geschichte: Halb Mensch, halb tierisches Ungeheuer, muss der Minotaurus auf Kreta in einem Labyrinth leben, und wird von Theseus dort erlegt. Ohne Ariadnes Faden wäre dieser Athener Heros in Dädalos’ Konstruktion, die noch mittelalterliche Mönche als Wandelgärten zur Meditation über Christus kopierten (und die Ayahuasqueras in den Mandelbrotschen Verschlingungen der Ornamente von Shipibokunsthandwerken erkunden), verloren gegangen: Ein Faden führt ihn, ein Faden, mit dem Ariadne sonst vermutlich ihre techné ausführt – Spinnen und Weben. Ariadne Textilien herstellend, da ist der Schritt nicht weit zum Text oder dem textverarbeitenden Computerprogramm, das einen Vorfahr in der Lochkarten-Webmaschine von Jacquard hat. Techné, wie klassisches Bildhauerhandwerk, trifft bei Joulia Strauss’ Arbeiten auf avancierte 3D-Technologie. Ein neuer Heros, anders als die eher brachialen und stärksten Krieger wie Achilleus oder Ajax, ist nichts ohne Techniken oder Listen, ein Schwert allein führt nicht zum Sieg: Wohl aber die vereinten Anstrengungen, die Ränke des Odysseus, die gemeinsame Arbeit (mit Moritz

The founding myths of Athens—in which the Dionysian Theatre, the site of tragedies, collective-forming rituals of a city-state, be it as cleansing of passions, rite de passage of adolescent boys into the polis, or honouring the god of intoxication himself, can still be admired today —also belong in this story. Half man, half beastly monster, Minotaur must dwell in his Cretan labyrinth, where he is killed by Theseus. However, without Ariadne‘s thread this Athenian hero would have been lost in Daedalos‘ construction. Medieval monks still copied labyrinths as stroll gardens for meditations on Christ (such labyrinths are explored by the Ayahuasqueras in the Mandelbrot braids of the ornaments of Shibipo arts and crafts): a thread leads him, a thread, with which Ariadne supposedly conducts her techné—spinning, weaving. Ariadne producing textiles is not far from text or textprocessing computer programs, which have ancestors in Jacquard’s punch-card loom. Techné, like classical sculpturing, meets advanced 3D technology in Joulia Strauss’ work. A new hero, different from the more brute and stronger warriors like Achilles or Ajax, is nothing without techniques or ruses, because a sword alone does not lead to victory. United efforts, however, do: Odysseus’ ranks, collaboration (with Moritz Mattern, Martin Carlé, others), thinking and courageous action toward a common good, which stands against monopolies of secrets or violence; Bradley Manning, Mari-shamans, and the empress of animals. The animated feline creature dances round the return of the gods, aided by the Universal Turing Machine and the net, so full of relish, smart, erratic, foolish, and wise as gods, revealed by shamanic performances, sprung from marble-white Winkelmanndibles.

Es strahlt. Es strahlt warm oder hell, doch es soll schöner strahlen, gleißender, unheimlicher. Sehr bald nach der Entdeckung der Radioaktivität und der symbolischen Einordnung (Kosmetik) von Stoffen wie Radium, Polonium und Thorium ins Periodensystem der Elemente hatte die Schönheits- und WellnessIndustrie des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts bereits eine breite Palette strahlender Verheißungen im Angebot. Das ist wahrscheinlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass man dem Geheimnis der seit Jahrhunderten bekannten und beliebten Heilwasserquellen etwa in Jáchymow (St. Joachimsthal), Bad Gastein oder in Hot Springs, Arkansas, auf die Schliche kam. Soon after the discovery of radioactivity and the cosmetic classification of elements like radium, polonium and thorium in the Periodic Table of Elements, the early 20th Century’s beauty and wellness industry became wellstocked with radiating promise. This may be ascribed to the healing springs of Jáchymow (St. Joachimsthal), Bad Gastein, or Hot Springs, Arkansas, having fully disclosed themselves. With the discovery of their radium content, a recipe for jevenescent health and beauty was decoded— the rise of radioactivity could begin long before the weapons and energy technologies of the Atomic Age in the 1940s and 50s and the currently blossoming illegal trade in radioactive substances within the beauty industry: radium-water zwieback from St. Joachimsthal, radioactive toothpaste Doramed of the Berlin-based Auergesellschaft (until 1945), or Burk & Braun’s patented juvenescent radium-chocolate (1931–36) are but a few exhibits in the cabinet of radioactive curiosities between the World Wars. Beginning in 1930, the Home Products Company of Denver, Colorado offered Vita Radium Suppositories for male virility enhancement (“his birthright”), an organ stimulant mailed discreetly in a plain wrapper and containing soluble radium, a paste of cocoa butter and an enema for rectal administration, while being “guaranteed entirely harmless”. Bis vor kurzem hielt man Dr. Curie für eine Fiktion, doch tatsächlich existierte der Namensvetter Pierre und Marie Curies – er leitete eine private Schönheitsklinik und bot seine Pharmakoi von 1933 bis in die frühen 60er Jahre in französischen Apotheken an, begleitet von massiven Werbekampagnen, die der Konsumentin ein Produkt versprachen, das die Méthode Scientifique de Beauté verkörpere. The model Silhouette Radiante was advertised with radioactivity certified by the Marie Curie Institute and continued promising a “stimulating, even rejuvenating influence on the somatic cells of the human body.” All this, although it was in the early 1920s that the pharmacological downside of these radiating substances became visible in the radioluminiscent visage of Grace Fryer. Bored by their monotonous factory work at the U.S. Radium Corporation in Orange, New Jersey, which consisted of painting clock hands and dial plates with a radium-containing paint called Undark, she and a couple of coworkers came up with the idea of using the paint to prepare themselves for romantic dates, painting their teeth, eyebrows and fingernails with it—to glow in the dark. After all, the cosmetic qualities of the substance were being advertised ubiquitously. A few years later the radium girls began losing their teeth and breasts, and their jawbones disintegrated. Studies indicating the dangers of these substances were categorically withheld, the girls’ untimely deaths attributed to syphilis / rotting

Aus dem Bewusstsein der Endverbraucherinnen sind diese Zeiten natürlich längst getilgt, die Kosmetikbranche hat sie auf chirurgische Eingriffe und neurotoxische Proteine umprogrammiert. Doch die radioaktiven Fratzen tauchen heute in der unheimlichen Degeneriertheit der russischen Politik wieder auf. Weil die Werte des Sozialismus immer ihre steinernen Wächter hatten, Agentinnen die an Alexander Litwinenko ein öffentlichkeitswirksames Exempel statuierten. Sie sind die Monstranz des Terrors, der unheimlichen und unkontrollierbaren chemischen Kettenreaktion, die das Polonium in seinem Körper auslöste, ihn verkrebste und zersetzte. Sie ist beendet. Polonium-210 hat eine Halbwertszeit von gerade einmal 138 Tagen, alle Spuren im wirren Gespinst dieser Affäre sind längst verwischt. Litvinenko rests in peace, while the polonium girls, radiantly white, preen among us.

Erst wenn hundertmal listenreich VI-700 3d non-contact Laser Scanner sein Werk beginnt, möchten sie vielleicht Aufenthalt nehmen. Joulia Strauss’ Remote Mythical Objects, die gegenwärtig in der großen Griechenausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau zu sehen sind, existieren in einem Reich aus Zahlen. Sie kommen aus dreidimensionalen, digitalen Scans der Köpfe von zwei Kunstkuratorinnen und drei in Berlin lebenden Wissenschaftlern. Die Daten dieser Scans durchlaufen mehrere Metamorphosen: werden in Vielecke, griechisch Polygone, verwandelt, dann in tausendgestaltige Oberflächenstücke, subdivision surfaces, gemorpht mit griechischen Helmen und Frauenfrisuren, gesendet als Input einer computergesteuerten Fräse, die die dreidimensionalen Portraits aus Styropor schneidet. How revealing it is to hear from you. I thought I bored you with my last mail and this would be the end of our wonderful reconn. Yes, representation is and will remain a big problem as long as the marbles inhabit museums. They lack character. The portraits are a bit more alive, that’s true. Did you see the dog? That’s my favorite sculpture there and favourite dog sculpture in general! It has a sister (or brother?!?!) in the New Acropolis Museum, which I hope you’ll see. There are sculptures that cause XTC (and radiate NRG). One can hear acoustic hallucinations while looking at them because they are music. And not only you can feel their presence very strongly, they can—I’m sure—feel you gazing at them. Like coma patients, they cannot react. And there are seriously impressive snakes and other wild animals there, which are from the old temple which was there before Parthenon, 470 BC. From the 12th to 16th of May there will be an International Meeting of Curators in Athens (speaking of snakes and other wild animals). This meeting probably will be not worth visiting, but during these days there will be a group exhibition in a unusual format: Kunsthalle Athena Bar, curated by main Greek friends of mine. It will be an every-evening meeting point. This is where I’m going to show the sketch poster of the Koúros Narkotikós proposal. What a nice occasion it would be, if we had to do our interview, for you to visit Athens and meet everybody who is doing the Cultural Revolution or whatever one calls it all. Is it too spontaneous to master a plan out of that? As you probably know well, anti-capitalist poetry is what gave rise to Ancient Greek music notation. What a lovely description you’ve provided for the way the portraits seem like secretly super-cognizant coma patients, aware of our gaze yet unable to respond (and so they resort to eerie means). This is exactly how I felt, and I can’t wait to visit them again soon, probably next Sunday. Thank you for pretending that I was aware that anti-capitalist poetry finds its origin in Ancient Greece’s reaction the barbaric Romans, who comprise half of Munich by the way. This is an amazing revelation, causing me to decide to reconstruct my anthology contribution in two ways. Firstly, it must be a bomb, not an essay. Secondly, it is destined now to focus on the earliest known culture of anti-capitalist poetry, Ancient Greece in its pedagogical gestures toward its barbaric colleagues, and to show how this is mirrored in the work and agenda of Kim Jong-il, the anti-capitalist poet/tyrant I am assigned to write about. At Glyptothek I was looking for a postcard of a nobody from the Portraits room, but they didn’t exist. The absurd me thumbed through many catalogs searching in vain for a portrait of Erostratus at least—such a sculpture would have to have been created from secret oral description and/or fantasy, probably decades or centuries after his execution, when the destruction of the Temple of Artemis had faded / itself grown larger than life. I see that you phoned, probably when I was in the Room of Early Greek Youths. While stunned by the combination of lean, muscular wastes and lean, muscular, broad shoulders, this time I was almost equally drawn to the palmette of an antefix tile from the marble roof of the Parthenon (Athens Acropolis), the cornice block (wall crowning) from the Erechtheion (Athens Acropolis), and the fragment from the pediment cornice of the Apollon Temple at Bassae in Arcadia. Please, receive a still-to-be-gardened Kouros description that will be handed out to participants: Koúros Narkotikós, a monument to the junkies of Omonia Koúros Narkotikós certainly incorporates the renowned features of the Ancient Greek sculpture such as the archaic pose of a Koúros (στάση), or the magnificent archaic smile (αρχαϊκό μειδίαμα), but decidedly focuses on the burning issues of Omonia today. A dark young man, with a syringe in hand. If exposed at one of the most ambivalent urban spots of Europe, the sculpture shapes its image: to face the truth and, in a cathartic way, accept and celebrate it, is a right, if not an ethical duty, of the people of Athens and the city’s numerous visitors. Koúros Narkotikós helps the junkies of Omonia, widely known as “undesirable users” of this central square by establishing them as a weak but accepted part of the Athens cityscape and prevents them from social and, possibly, physical death. The sculpture aims to enduce an understanding of the tragedy of the junkies of Omonia, who have been forced into a hopeless situation by war, repression, and other consequences of the destructive logic of the predominating model of our world. Koúros Narkotikós, standing for all the “not considered”, seeks to comply with the role of the zombie he is forced to play. He is injecting death into himself because life has been pumped out of his homeland. The first question to arise in my mind is whether, circa 5th Century BC when music notation was born and underwent early development, the Ancient Greeks indeed cared about programming the thought processes of barbaric Romans. Could it be that music notation was born of pure MIND and only later applied toward psychological warfare / pedagogical efforts? Yes, it is a very nice Sappho quote that you gave the reporter! This afternoon I visited the Strong Women exhibition across the street from where our stone friends perpetually radiate immeasurable love. The State Antique Collection pales in comparison to Glyptothek. An acromegalic (άκρος μεγάλος) guard hums as he languidly follows you from room to room. When you duck into the mens room, the hum follows you up to the door, the melody a slow, legato, occasionally quarter-tonal affair. I much prefer Glyptothek and plan to visit there on the early side tomorrow—can’t wait. Joulia, another contributor to the anti-capitalism book, Slavoj Žižek (whose topic is Radovan Karadžić), has made two films and many lecture videos—these have been feeding my mind over the past couple of days. In one lecture he parenthetically attacks himself and the notion of academics as anti-capitalists, those who preach from tenured positions against the system that makes their positions possible in the first place. More importantly the sun came out, finally, as I received your delightful message early in the morning. It had been a difficult decision for me to remain in Munich rather than see you in Athens on short notice, and your resonant thoughts on the matter were heartening to read about. Thank you for being so pensive. That said, I clearly missed out on great Athenian goings-on from any perspective. Firstly, how I would have loved to be present at your gallery. Later, your endless table at the original Greek restaurant sounds like a deft blow to the inevitable smug cosmopolitanism in town, and it also reminds me of the only business in my neighborhood here in Munich that was targeted during Riot Day—a little restaurant run by a doddering old Greek couple. (The damage was minimal, but there are more deeply deserving Italian restaurants around.) Glossy British/Hindu Sarat Maharaj must have served as interesting garnish early in the evening—Polydios and Apollon are both from Megara before Megara allied with Sparta, but what were Polydios’ approximate years (i. e., when Maharaj sought to re-root Empire in Ancient Greece)? It is about proud Athenian artists (composers), and the composer Limenios (the one who wrote it down and further developed it) names Barbarians in the text of the song. In any case, they wrote down the archaic parts of the songs, which otherwise would have vanished. Wikipedia points out that Limenios “was required to belong to one of the guilds of the Artists of Dionysus,” presumably including the period when he interpreted/scored the 2nd Delphic Hymn. Another entry says that “Limenios is mentioned in a separate Delphic inscription as a master player of the cithara; likely he accompanied a singer or singers.” It continues, “the occasion of both hymns was the Pythian Festival, held only once every ten years, and according to the former assumption of dating the earlier hymn was probably written for the boys’ choir at the Pythian Games in 138 BCE.” Clearly, Limenios had municipal affiliations. By the way, have you, as a citharede (is your lyre a cithara?), ever accompanied a boys choir on the 1st or 2nd Hymn? It is remarkable how much resonance your instrument, with the ADSR of plucked open strings, generates. If members of a boys choir were on the same flight with you (five or six vocalists seated randomly throughout the cabin), and you were allowed to take your lyre onboard, Pythian Games-style renderings of the 1st and/or 2nd Hymn could ring out from the sky—that would be quite similar to 9/11 in spirit! Very beautiful work presented in the sculpture video link that you kindly thought to include, great use of the medium —hi-res, well-focused light reflections, otherworldly, and very interestingly silent, a nice gesture that. It reminded me of something you once said—that if Ancient Greeks were teleported to our time and culture their work would almost certainly consist of super-light, mathematics-friendly contemporary materials and not marble! I explained this to a friend during a visit to the Pergamon last year, where we were actually disappointed by the lack of Apollon depictions. It is advanced the way your video ends with a brief recognition of operation animal forms, but only for a couple of seconds, and with a wisp of unidentifiable vertical movement in the foreground. I was moved to see and read about you (“the hyperactive Athenian artist”) in the Die Zeit article. Lovely photo and, no, I wasn’t picturing garbage all over Athens. Why did the Ancient Greeks attempt to groom the barbaric Romans, and why did the barbaric Romans neutralize Christ? Did Christ remind the barbaric Romans of the Ancient Greeks? Was Beauty a kind of grounding rod for religious sentiment among the Ancient Greeks? Perhaps Christ was beautiful, thus confusing him in the minds of Barbaric Romans with the Ancient Greeks. The philosophy of Christ having been overtly influenced by Plato and Pythagoras could have been the reason. This week I discovered a fantastic museum of copies of Greek and Roman sculptures, three blocks or so from Glyptothek. I was attracted to the very old building and walked up the front steps to peak inside, where hundreds of sculptures were amassed into the ground floor, beckoning me to spend the afternoon. I felt a greater connection to the gods in this museum than I do at Glyptothek, because many versions of the same gods are clustered together in

various sections of the gigantic room, and yet there is just enough space in between for the visitor to navigate sensibly. Amazingly, I was the only person there. The presentation is overwhelming yet uncompromised by the preciousness that reduces the effectiveness of most of Glyptothek’s room (i. e., save for the Portraits room). The collection of which I speak is attached to the State Egyptological Museum—I do not know its name. Yes, it’s heartening to see our ideas incubate—like baby swans inside their shells. It would be an oversimplification to introduce Joulia Strauss to you as a Russian visual artist who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Joulia is a Mari, from the Mari El Republic located in the eastern part of the East European plain of the Russian Federation, along the Volga River, right where the Ural Mountains begin. This small community of approximately 300.000 people has a rich tradition in the performing arts, and Joulia grew up in the middle of this, with two of her family members at the helm of the Mari National Theater in Yoshkar-Ola. She got an admirable start in the art world by studying at the Platonic New Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (founded in 1989), alongside artist and founder Timur Petrovich Novikov. This evolved into the NeoAcademism art movement in the 1990s. In my discussion with Joulia, you’ll see how she entered into the exclusively all-male New Academy, finding herself at the heart of the intellectual elite and queer culture of St. Petersburg at the time.

In meinen Gespräch mit Joulia werden Sie sehen, wie sie in diese ganz von Männern geprägte Neue Akademie eindrang und sich im Herzen der intellektuellen und queeren Elite vom damaligen St. Petersburg wiederfand.

Classically trained as a sculptor, she creates works reminiscent of an antique and neo-classical idealism, always aiming for harmony, perfection, and beauty with a contemporary twist. She continued to be a member of Neo-Academism when she decided to pursue a fine arts degree at the University of Berlin. Being a skilled craftsman on her own, Joulia soon became fascinated with technology, science, and mathematics. By finding a lot of her answers in science (with the help of prominent thinkers in Berlin), her work began achieving the rigor for which she strove. She founded an artist-run space called art_science for gatherings of critics, scientists, artists, philosophers, in order to enable vital exchange outside of their own networks. Joulia is highly politicized and conscious of the changes our society is undergoing. The sight of last December’s riots in Greece all over the media literally shook her. Joulia’s deep love and appreciation for ancient and contemporary Greece inspired her to come to Athens on a residency at MYLIVINGROOM in Metaxourgio, to observe and begin decoding the active role of artists in contemporary Greece. Having taken September off, I am very pleased to return to my column and to you with this Joulia Strauss interview. Georgia Kotretsos: I am interested in discussing your upbringing as a Mari pagan within a traditional community. What role, if any, did belief play in your life at school as a child? How did Orthodox Christianity and Mari paganism mix in the Soviet Union?

Joulia Strauss: Communist indoctrination served as the dominant set of beliefs for all in the schools of the Soviet Union. I wasn’t discriminated against per se, but the fact I was a Mari pagan was never addressed by schoolteachers. I wasn’t given the silent treatment, but being a Mari served more as an intimidating territory for them.

Klassisch ausgebildet als Bildhauerin schafft sie Werke, die an einen antiken und neoklassischen Idealismus erinnern, immer nach Harmonie, Perfektion und Schönheit strebend, dabei mit einem zeitgenössischen Dreh. Sie war eine Vertreterin des Neoakademismus, als sie beschloss, ein Studium der Kunst an der Berliner Universität der Künste zu beginnen. That did not stop my grandmother, Anastasia Strausova, and mother, Sarra Kirillova, from significantly contributing towards the establishment and growth of the Mari National Theatre in Yoshkar-Ola. They were actresses; on top of that, my mother was the National Theatre’s director, yet both were custodians of the Mari people’s heritage and pagan faith. I am the third generation of Mari witches nourished to resist political, cultural, and religious oppression by the state. The Volga is the Mecca of spiritual healers, occultists, mysticists, diviners, sorcerers, witches, and enchanters in Russia. It is a highly charged land and the members of the Mari minority are bold despite the fact they are continuously mistreated because they are practitioners of a faith other than Christianity. GK: In 1993, in order to enter the New Academy of Fine

Arts in St. Petersburg, you pretended to be a young boy by shaving your head. How long did this “performance” last and why wouldn’t you enter as young woman? JS: Our director and founder, Timur, figured what was

happening right away, and he appreciated the gesture greatly. The New Academy tried to be even more reactionary than the State Academy of Arts in Russia at the time, by referring straight to the roots of academia: no women. I liked the voluptuous, elitist, and austere queer conservatism. Can you imagine working on Greek busts being surrounded by beautiful men? It was certainly a high-point initiation into the arts. Girls behaved like groupies at that time, and so I performed a non-femaleness – kind of a Marc-Almondness. GK: What role did Neo-Academism play in the 90s in St.

Petersburg, and what does it mean to you today to have been traditionally trained as an artist / sculptor /

Die Mari wurden unter einengender Herrschaft gehalten. Das hat meine Großmutter, Anastasia Straussowa, und meine Mutter, Sarra Kirillowa, nicht davon abgehalten, gegen das Establishment maßgeblich am Wachsen des MariNationaltheaters in Joschkar-Ola mitzuwirken. 90er Jahren in Petersburg, und was heisst es für dich heute, traditionell ausgebildet als Künstlerin / Bildhauerin / Kunsthandwerkerin / Teilnehmerin einer Bewegung / Intellektuelle, mit einem Vor-PerestroikaIdealismus, zu sein? Wie hast du den Wechsel von der Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Denk-Schule hin zu einer unabhängigen Künstlerexistenz, nach dem Modell und im Sinne eines westlichen Verständnisses, geschafft? JS: Neo-Akademismus kann man auch als ein westliches

Modell diskutieren. Es war eine Bewegung, die versucht hat, die Fragen zu beantworten, welche die Institutionen des Westens der Kunst des Ostens zur Perestroika-Zeit stellten. Unsere Antwort war: „Schönheit.“ Wir haben die Freiheit des Ausdrucks und zeitgenössische Marotten abgelehnt, indem wir uns ganz der klassischen Form und Tradition verschrieben. Dieses Modell funktionierte. Wir hatten Ausstellungen in Museen und Ausstellungsräumen, die für uns von sehr grosser Bedeutung waren, wie etwa: Selbstidentifikation, Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo und Haus am Waldsee, Berlin, 1994; Metaphern des Entrücktseins, Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe, 1996; Kabinet, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1997; Between Earth and Heaven, Oostende Museum of Modern Art, 2001; Die Griechische Klassik. Neo-Academism got a lot of attention very soon. Being the only female student at the New Academy, with Timur’s support literally overnight, I gained stardom fame in Russia among the art community. I was exclusively identified with Neo-Academism, which was a one-way street creatively because I was bound to produce within the limits of the movement. In 1995, I decided to leave St. Petersburg to attempt to pursue art independently. In my opinion, NeoAcademism hit a wall soon after. The popularity, the hipness, and the IT factor made us (meaning the members of the group) rely on repetition. It took me quite a while to detach from the safe, well-functioning Russian art path and learn to create within my own context. Up until 2000, I was still involved in projects of the New Academy. I did not become an independent artist overnight, but rather I switched schools of thought, from Plato to Pythagoras. GK: Some artists are lucky enough to meet that one great

mentor that nurtures their passion and vision, but I hear you were fortunate enough to have met three great male figures. Please tell me how your work evolved, as your mentors changed from Timur Petrovich Novikov (19582002) to Georg Baselitz, and finally to Friedrich Kittler. JS: Timur has been a cultural advocate, a diplomat, a

creative commando for the arts in Russia. He was very successful on his own before he founded the New Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Within a homey luxurious setting, with over-the-top drapes, literally at the garden of delight of queer culture, surrounded by beautiful men, sculptures, and ideas, Timur taught us how to live and

Es hat mich einige Zeit gekostet, mich von dem sicheren, gut funktionierendem russischen Kunstweg loszulösen und zu lernen, meinen eigenen Kontext zu schaffen. Bis zum Jahr 2000 war ich immer noch an Projekten der Neuen Akademie beteiligt. Ich bin nicht über Nacht eine unabhängige Künstlerin geworden, ich habe eher die Denkschulen gewechselt, von Platon zu Pythagoras. GK: Manche Künstler haben das Glück, diesen einen

großen Mentor zu treffen, der ihre Leidenschaften und Visionen beflügelt, aber wie ich gehört habe, hast du drei solcher Mentorenfiguren getroffen. Bitte erzähle mir, wie sich deine Arbeit entwickelte, als deine Mentoren von Timur Petrowitsch Novikow (1958–2002) zu Georg Baselitz und dann schließlich zu Friedrich Kittler wechselten. JS: Timur war ein Botschafter für die Kunst in Russland. Er war bereits international erfolgreich, bevor er 1989 die Neue Akademie der Schönen Künste gründete. In einer anheimelnden luxuriösen Ausstattung, mit überdimensionierten Vorhängen, buchstäblich in einem Garten der Lüste der homosexuellen Szene, umgeben von

work intensely. My first exhibition, entitled Sculpture in the Beginning of the 21st Century, took place at the St. Petersburg Summer Garden. This is where Peter the Great installed statues under the trees so that “people could learn from their faces,” as he once put it. I exhibited busts of the students of the New Academy, as well as Timur, in a circle. These sculptures looked as if they had always been there. It was mind-blowing at the time to view the busts in the presence of the actual models during the exhibition. And for me, it was not only a classicist gesture, but also a comment on how our lives were structured at that time. I literally saw us like characters from antiquity that lived in the 90s. The romanticism of our ideals was highly charged when we worked and lived together. We gained knowledge during our walks at the Academia. Timur would tell me that I have Apollonian eyes. At his peak he lost his eyesight, yet he continued to lecture at the Academy and work on his projects. During that period, I made a bronze sculpture of him with diamond eyes. Surrounded by beauty until the end, he passed away, leaving all of us behind. Unfortunately, AIDS got the best of him. In 1997, I decided to enroll to the Berlin University of Arts to continue growing as an artist. Although my German was poor, I had to pick my advisors right away. It was during one of those early days at the Academy when I was walking down a corridor and came across a bald man shouting very loudly in German at a young girl who was crying and surrounded by a big group of students, “Where is your head? Where is your intelligence?” I didn’t know who he was at the time, but I knew right away I wanted to work with him. Of course I am talking about Georg Baselitz. I applied for his class right away.

Photo by Georg Wilde Und für mich war das keine klassizistische Geste, sondern ein Kommentar dazu, wie wir unser Leben zu der Zeit geführt haben. Ich nahm uns wirklich als Figuren der Antike wahr, die in den 90er Jahren leben. Die Romantik unserer Ideale wurde verstärkt, wenn wir zusammen lebten und arbeiteten. Wir sammelten Wissen auf unseren Spaziergängen in dem Sommergarten: in der

Twelve busts of Berlin DJs were portrayed as Greek gods. The project received wide media coverage in Germany and abroad. I believe techno music was the first positive German cultural phenomenon after World War II that was, to my mind, to connect with the neo-academic idea of beauty. Soon I became interested in making sculptures by exploring the latest 3D technology. I was the first artist in Germany to run around with a pioneering transportable 3D scanner and think about the mathematical perfection of ancient Greek statues, which I could now begin examining from the inside. By literally scanning significant Berlin figures with a 3D scanner, I met mentor number 3: Friedrich Kittler, the

Es war an einem dieser Tage ganz zu Anfang, als ich durch den Flur lief und an einem Mann mit Glatze vorbeikam, der sehr laut auf Deutsch auf ein junges, weinendes Mädchen einschrie, und der von einer großen Gruppe von Studenten umgeben war. „Wo ist Ihr Kopf? Wo ist Ihre Intelligenz?“ Ich wusste damals nicht, wer das war, aber ich wusste sofort, dass ich mit ihm arbeiten wollte. Natürlich spreche ich von Georg Baselitz. Ich bewarb mich gleich um Aufnahme in seine Klasse.

Dracula of German Media Theory. He stood between the tradition of Foucault, Lacan, and Heidegger. Kittler explored the existential dimension of computers philosophically. We once met at the Paris Bar, which was considered the art bar at the time in Charlottenburg, Berlin, where after a few drinks we confessed to each other that we are Greeks at heart and what we are interested in beauty. Our philhellenic beings found each other through technology, and that was the beginning of a lasting collaboration. The 3D animation, Virtual Kingdom of Beauty, showcased culturally active Berliners painting an accurate picture of the cultural German landscape in 45 minutes. Part two of the animation was the numerically-cast bronze portraits, which were exhibited at the Pergamon Museum, a site that is rarely opens its doors to contemporary art. By doing so, I connected Greece with the visual language of our generation. Holographic projections over the ruins looked so natural that I felt like an ancient Greek artist who was born in our age by mistake, but now uses technology to achieve just about the same level of excellence … GK: You participated in the 2009 Athens Biennial. Fünf Jahre lang hatten wir aufregende, stimulierende Hardcore-Diskussionen über Kunst. 1997 machte ich ein sehr herausforderndes Projekt mit dem Titel 12 Caesars of the Techno Empire: Zwölf Büsten von DJs aus Berlin, die als griechische Götter porträtiert waren. Das Projekt erregte große mediale Aufmerksamkeit im In- und Ausland. Ich glaube, Techno-Musik war das erste positive Kulturphänomen aus Deutschland nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg; so dachte ich, es wäre passend, es mit der neoakademischen Idee von Schönheit zu verbinden. Bald interessierte ich mich dafür, Skulpturen mit Hilfe der neusten 3D-Technologie herzustellen. Ich war die erste Künstlerin in Deutschland, die mit einem bahnbrechenden transportablen 3D-Scanner herumlief und dabei über die Perfektion griechischen antiker Statuen nachdachte, die ich jetzt von Innen untersuchen konnte.

It is part of a larger umbrella project I have been developing in collaboration with music scientist and media philosopher Martin Carlé over the last few years, called Cat-Notation. Als ich wichtige Berliner Figuren mit dem 3D-Scanner eingescannt habe, traf ich meinen dritten Mentor: Friedrich Kittler, den Dracula der deutschen Medientheorie. Er steht in der Tradition von Foucault, Lacan und Heidegger. Kittler erforschte die existentielle Dimension des Computers philosophisch. Wir trafen uns in der Paris Bar, die damals als die Kunstbar in Berlins Charlottenburg galt. Nach ein paar Drinks gestanden wir einander, dass wir im Herzen Griechen sind und uns die Schönheit interessiert. Unserer beider philhellenische Wesen fand sich durch die Technologie, und das war der Anfang einer lang andauerten Zusammenarbeit.

We have used the interval ratios of different ancient modes of music as proportions for these synthetic sculptures. The limbs of their bodies move according to the melodic progression, unveiling specific characters and ethical qualities of the seven modes of archaic music. Animals morph into one another and display the little-known phenomenon of modulation, the transition between different scales. CatNotation provides a sculptural system for experiencing the reliable laws of beauty that exist in the concurrence of music, mathematics, and time.

Die 3D-Animation Virtual Kingdom of Beauty präsentierte ausgewählte aktive Berliner und zeichnete durch sie über 45 Minuten ein akkurates Bild der kulturellen Landschaft Deutschlands. Weitere Portraits habe ich als analoges Kontrapost fräsen und in Bronze giessen lassen. Virtual Kingdom of Beauty war im Pergamonmuseum, einem Ort, der selten der zeitgenössischen Kunst die Tore öffnet, ausgestellt. Damit verband ich das alte Griechenland mit der visuellen Sprache unserer Generation. Die Holographischen Projektionen auf den Ruinen dort sahen so authentisch aus, ich fühlte mich wie ein antiker griechischer Künstler, der durch Zufall in unsere Zeit geboren wurde, und der jetzt die Technologie nutzt, um die gleiche Ebene von herausragenden Leistungen zu erreichen …

In the case of the First Delphic Hymn of Apollon, when listening to the melody reconstructed after ancient fragments found in the area, the viewer encounters animals proportioned after Pythagorean harmonic tunes. The hymn was further developed and written by Athenaios in 138 BC to show the beauty of Greek music to the Romans. It culminates in a dance of the so-called all-embracing Dorian Sum-Cat. Erzähl mir etwas zu deiner dort gezeigten Arbeit und die dafür nötigen Vorbereitungen. JS: Ich wurde von der Kuratorin Diana Baldon eingeladen,

an ihrer Ausstellung mit dem Titel For the Straight Way Is Lost in der zweiten Biennale, Heaven, teilzunehmen. Sie kannte meine Arbeiten gut und fand sie sehr geeignet für das Griechenland der Gegenwart. Diana hat die Entwicklung meiner Arbeiten über viele Jahre verfolgt.

90 Das Video First Delphic Hymn to Apollon navigiert durch eine märchenhafte Landschaft, die aus realen Ansichten von Delphi kompiliert wurde. Es ist Teil eines größeren Projektes, Cat-Notation, welches ich in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Musikwissenschaftler und Medienphilosophen Martin Carlé über die letzte Jahre entwickelt habe. Während ein Rezipient der Ersten Delphischen Hymne an Apollon lauscht, die nach den in der Gegend gefundenen Notationsfragmenten rekonstruiert wurde, trifft er auf das Skulpturensystem der „Mathematischen Operationstiere,“ welche nach den pythagoräischen Tonarten proportioniert sind. Die Hymne wurde weiterentwickelt und aufgeschrieben von Athenaios circa 138 nach Christus, um den Römern die Schönheit griechischer Musik vorzuführen. Sie kulminiert im Tanz der sogenannten alles in sich vereinenden dorischen Summenkatze, die uns hilft, Musiknotation fortzuentwickeln, da sie ihre Tatzen streng den Tonhöhen entsprechend bewegt und uns den Charakter der Melodie anvertraut. Dieses Video wurde zusammen mit dem legendären 3D-Künstler Moritz Mattern hergestellt. Für die Bedürfnisse von Cat-Notation fingen Martin Carlé und ich eine Schildkröte im Pontus, der Südküste des Schwarzen Meeres, und töteten sie dann, um die Lyra zu bauen, die du mich in dem Video spielen siehst. Wir haben sie gestimmt nach Martin Carlés computergestützten Rekonstruktionen altgriechischer musikalischer Stimmungen. Da ich die Hymne dank des Vokalalphabets und dank meines kyrillischen Hintergrundes mühelos singen konnte, war ich nur noch einen Schritt davon entfernt zu versuchen, das Instrument zu spielen. Unsere Lecture-Performances fanden unter anderem in der Tate Modern und am ZKM in Karlsruhe statt, für nächstes Jahr sind wir eingeladen worden, an der archäologischen Ausgrabungsstätte des Tempels der Artemis Orthia in Messina auf dem Peloponnes, in unserem geliebten Griechenland, aufzutreten.

Martin’s computer reconstructions of the Ancient Greek modes of music. As I was singing the hymns without any difficulties, thanks to the vocal alphabet and my Cyrillic background, I was just one step away from attempting to play the instrument. Our lecture-performances have been presented at the Tate Modern, at ZKM in Karlsruhe, and next year, we have been invited to perform at the exciting archaeological site of the Temple of Artemis Orthia in Messinia, Peloponnese, in our beloved Greece. mentioned that you usually work in enormous project spaces in Berlin, while you’re currently working at a modest-sized studio in downtown Athens. When I began talking about this contrast out loud, you emphatically said, “My studio is here, in the streets, among the people, in Omonia Square.” What are your studio needs, generally speaking? JS: My colleague Martina Schumacher and I currently

occupy a 420 square meter (4520 square feet) studio on the sixth floor of the Ullsteinhaus building, the first concrete building in Kreuzberg, near the Templholf airport in Berlin. It used to be the Ullstein Publishing house. It is a great space to work in. Greek artist Dimitris Tzamouranis recently joined us as well. Generally speaking, my studios have always been pretty big because they are often exhibition or project spaces, where artists exhibit their work without institutional

GK: What kind of project are you’re working on right now

in Athens, if your studio needs no walls? How do you perceive Greek contemporary art? JS: Since I choose to live and work here for the time

being, I consider myself a contemporary Greek artist. Im Allgemeinen waren meine Ateliers immer sehr groß, weil sie meist auch Ausstellungs- oder Projekträume waren, in denen Künstler und Künstlerinnen ihre Arbeiten ohne bürokratische Institutionen ausstellen konnten. Martina und ich haben oft Institutionen wie die Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben überfallen, um für unseren Bedarf einen Atelierraum zu geringen oder gar ohne Kosten auszuhandeln. GK: An was für einer Art Projekt arbeitest du gerade in

Athen, bei dem dein Atelier keine Wände braucht? Wie nimmst du die griechische Gegenwartskunst wahr? JS: Da ich beschlossen habe, zu dieser Zeit und in diesem

Moment hier zu arbeiten, sehe ich mich selbst als zeitgenössische griechische Künstlerin. Ich habe ein tiefgehendes und beständiges Zutrauen in das Potential Griechenlands. I have a deep and abiding belief in Greek potential. Speaking to many young artists, art historians, and activists, I could observe that they still have amazing handicrafts, which enables them to establish the new and healthy notion of the “work of art,” in contrast to industrially-fabricated luxury objects, which no longer have anything to do with fine arts; people here have no gap between the past and the present. Their cultural memory entails the gods; they operate with those in everyday conversations. These people have seen the world and came back. As we speak, I am an artist-in-residence at MYLIVINGROOM, a unique word-of-mouth Athens residency program, which is run by art historian and curator Sotirios Bahtsetzis. I’m very happy to be able to work on a sculpture, which embodies the structure of modulation (changing from one tune to the other) of the Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon. GK: Please, describe Omonia Square through your eyes. It will

help me understand your fascination with that part of our city

Ich bin sehr glücklich, an einer Skulptur arbeiten zu können, die die Struktur der Modulation (den Wechsel von einer Stimmung in die andere) in der Zweiten Delphischen Hymne an Apollon verkörpert.

JS: Omonia, in downtown Athens, epitomizes for me the

despair of the junkies and the deadlocks of Iraqi and Afghan immigrants. They escape death day-by-day, and there isn’t any chance of integration in their future. The tragedy of junkies of Omonia provides me with a very clear picture. The picture narrates, “this is the end of a particular political and economic model of the world!” So I’m here for the cultural revolution. And that’s a wrap!

JS: Omonia in der Athener Innenstadt ist für mich der

Inbegriff für die Verzweiflung der Junkies und der sozialen Tragödie der irakischen und afghanischen Immigranten. Tag für Tag entkommen sie dem Tod, und es gibt keine Hoffnung auf Integration für ihre Zukunft. Die Tragödie der Junkies von Omonia stellt mir ein klares Bild bereit. Dieses Bild sagt: „Das ist das Ende eines bestimmten politischen und ökonomischen Modells der Welt!“ Ich bin also hier, um die kulturelle Revolution voranzutreiben. Das wär’ im Kasten!
