The Gray/Jones County Recycling Center is located on Industrial Boulevard in Gray. This is a 24-hour drop-off for recyclables only. County dumpsters are provided at locations throughout the county for household garbage.

SANITATION COLLECTIONS PROGRAM CITY OF GRAY – Sewer connection service is provided through the City of Gray. There is a fee for connection and an inspection. Garbage collection is provided through cooperative arrangement with Advanced Disposal with a collection fee charged. Contact the business office at (478)986-2201 for more information.

JONES COUNTY – Advanced Disposal Services, Southland Waste Systems of Georgia, and Clean Rite Sanitation also provide some residential garbage pickup within the more populated areas of the county. Weekly service is provided with the company furnishing a 95-gallon cart for curbside pickup. Billing is done quarterly. You can contact Advanced Disposal at (478) 405-5000; Southland at (478) 7467230; or Clean Rite at (478) 994-4233.

Advanced Disposal and Southland provide commercial waste collection, also.

ADMINISTRATION OFFICES JONES COUNTY County offices are headed by County Administrator Jason Rizner and County Clerk Margie Tyson, who manage the day-to-day operations of county government. Their offices are located in the Jones County Government Center, 166 Industrial Blvd. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

PLANNING & ZONING The Planning and Zoning office regulates land use and construction in Jones County and Gray by issuing appropriate permits for all new structures. Permits are required before construction begins, or before a business is opened. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tim Pitrowski is the zoning officer.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.

COURTS SUPERIOR COURT The office of the Jones County Superior Court maintains civil litigation records, criminal records, deed records, plats, notary public records, trade name affidavits, corporation records, soldier discharge records, and issues U.S. passports.

The office is located in the Jones County Courthouse in downtown Gray. The clerk of the Jones County Superior Court is Bart W. Jackson.

MAGISTRATE COURT The Magistrate Court of Jones County is located in the Jones County Courthouse. The office handles suits (small claims up to $15,000), dispossessions, garnishments, and criminal warrants.

PROBATE COURT The Probate Court of Jones County is located in the Jones County Courthouse. The probate judge is J. Mike Greene.

Office hours are observed Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This court handles all probate cases, such as wills and estate matters. The court also handles traffic violations, gun permits, marriage licenses, birth records and death records.

GRAY MUNICIPAL COURT Gray Municipal Court provides a local forum for the resolution of traffic infractions, parking citations, and city ordinance violations issued within the city limits of Gray.

Municipal Court Judge Lewis Patterson, appointed by the Gray City Council, oversees the operations and proceedings of the court. The majority of cases heard are traffic violations.

This court does not handle civil or small claims cases.

The Jones County Sheriff ’s Department provides law enforcement services to all citizens of Jones County. The law enforcement complex, located at 123 Holmes Hawkins Drive, houses the 911 center which serves all of Jones County and the City of Gray. The Sheriff’s Department offers an array of services, including background checks for employment and fingerprinting. The department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

RECORDS Jones County is fortunate to have records dating back to the early 1800s for marriages and wills. Birth records date back to 1924. Visitors are welcome to search county records, or requests for information may be directed to office personnel; however, there is a very small staff available to assist with research, which can only be done as time allows after regular duties are completed. This process, by necessity, will not allow for a quick turnaround. A search fee and a charge for copies will be imposed.

GRAY POLICE DEPARTMENT The Gray Police Department is located on James Street (Highway 18 East) just up the road from city hall. Gray Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Jones County Board of Tax Assessors is located at the Jones County Government Center. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This office is charged with the responsibility of filing homestead exemptions, maintaining property ownership information, deed and plat references, sales information, sketches of houses and commercial buildings and square footage of buildings; valuation of real and commercial property, timber, mobile homes, business personal property, boats, and farm equipment for taxes; maintaining aerial photography and maps; processing appeals to the Board of Assessors; conducting specialized assessment programs.

TAX COMMISSIONER The Jones County tax commissioner is Brian S. Jackson.

The tax office is located in the Jones County Government Center at 166 Industrial Blvd. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Vehicle tags and registrations are handled by the tax commissioner’s office and motor vehicle ad valorem taxes are collected. Applications for auto certificate of title (required on mobile homes, cranes, and all automobiles 1986 and newer, as well as some trailers dependent on weight class) are filed through the tax commissioner’s office.

The office is charged with the responsibility of billing and collection of taxes for real and personal property, timber, mobile homes, and heav y-duty equipment.

At Morris Bank, we understand the importance of saving and it serving as a predictor of future success.

That’s why we created the Morris Moola program.

Not only is it a fun tool for children to start saving, it’s a program that promotes a financially sound way of life right off the bat.

The Morris Moola savings program is designed to help teach children the value of a dollar. It leverages an interest-bearing savings account and can be a great tool for parents, grandparents, and educators.

Open to children 13 years of age and younger, the Moola program is also available in school systems in Jones, Wilkinson, and Dublin-Laurens County. Once a month, a Morris Moola representative visits each school, collects the students’ deposits, and rewards their smart saving habit with a prize. Coupled with a few other fun perks throughout the year, the kids then receive an end of the year party if they save a certain amount throughout the year.

What better way to promote saving than making it FUN! We truly want our future leaders to succeed and we hope that by providing this program, we’re playing a small part in that goal.

Leadership Jones WHAT IS LEADERSHIP JONES? • LEADERSHIP JONES •

Leadership Jones is a leadership development program designed to inform a corps of committed and qualified individuals about the community—its past, present, and future, as well as its problems, challenges and directions. Program participants are considered capable of fulfilling leadership positions in the Jones area, the region, and the state.

The Leadership Jones program seeks to identify highly motivated leaders and potential leaders to participate, examine and challenge participants to respond to the needs of the community and the dynamics of social and economic change, develop an esprit de corps among the participants which will provide a common ground for working together on community needs, and create a dialogue and sense of teamwork between the participants and community leaders.

During the sessions, class members have an opportunity to meet community leaders in each of the areas, hear from the experts on various topics and take trips throughout the county for a first-hand look at the organizations that relate to each topic. The program begins in May with an orientation and ends in November with a graduation celebration.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Leadership Jones is appropriate for any of the following:

• A business person wanting to develop leadership skills for use in the workplace or the community

• A volunteer or board member of a community organization looking to lend greater support to the organization’s development

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM FORMAT?

• A community member wanting to be involved and make a difference in Jones

Leadership Jones begins with a mandatory meet and greet.

After the meet and greet, full-day follow-up sessions are held once a month. Seven full-day sessions are held each subsequent month to focus on community sectors such as Area Economy, Education, State Government, Media, Arts & Culture, Civil & Criminal Justice and Quality of Life.

LEADERSHIP JONES Leadership is a complex topic and a skill that is woven into the core of our civilization. Effective leadership is even more complex and the process of becoming an effective leader requires a great deal of hard work. Eleven students have risen to the challenge and worked to learn the foundational elements of community leadership in this first 2018-2019 cohort of Junior Leadership Jones.

The Jr. Leadership Jones program is part of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS). Through the collaboration of Jones County Board of Commissioners, Jones County College and Career Academy, Gray/Jones County Chamber of Commerce, Jones County Family Connection, and UGA 4-H Extension, this program provides students with an overview of the functions of local government and the economic impact of local and regional industry. This program gives participants the opportunity to see government in action at the local level, and how they can be involved with and improve the community now and in the future.

Through the course of the year, students have taken part in team-building exercises, attended local governmental meetings, toured county facilities, and interacted with local and state leaders. Students have participated in iCivics candidate simulations that put them in the seat of an elected official for a firsthand view of the many aspects of the political and decision making processes. In addition, students have had the opportunity to tour the Macon Water Authority, Kumho Tires, Navicent Health, Martin Marietta, and other facilities to learn about the economic impact of each operation to this area. Finally, students learned personal finance skills at State Bank and soft skills from a variety of guest presenters. All of these foundational elements are essential to community leadership and have enlightened these students to the community which surrounds them.

Build future leaders ensures success, and this cohort of Jr. Leadership Jones is ready to embark on their journey in community leadership.

Daily Grace Adult Day Health Services is a community based medical program that employs experienced and licensed nurses, nursing assistants, and therapists. The services provided includes: • Health monitoring such as assessing vital signs and body weight monitoring • Nursing care ordered by a physician, such as, skin care, catheter care, colostomy care, tube feedings, diabetes and chronic conditions management, and respiratory assessment.

• Medication administration to make sure prescribed medicines are taken appropriately and possible side effects are monitored and communicated to their doctor.

• Self-care assistance such as feeding assistance, toileting, grooming and hygiene, and showering.

• Therapeutic recreation to include games, paintings, crafts, gardening, and outdoor activities • Physical and cognitive activities such as chair exercise, circuit training, Tai Chi, board games, puzzles and word games.

• Individual and group activities such as reading, arts and crafts, sing-a-longs, spiritual discussions, and live entertainment.

• Individualized plan of care to provide each participant the care best suited for him or her, this includes input from the family, caregiver, participant, and physician.

• Transportation arrangements with safe and handicap accessible transportation service to and from the Center.

• Nutritious meals — breakfast, lunch, and a snack that accommodate regular, restricted, soft and modified diets.

• Restorative therapies to help improve balance, strength, fine 22

and gross motor skills, and increase independence and safety with self-care skills.

Daily Grace Adult Day Health Services set out to be the best in class when it was planned and opened. Its mission is to “Enhance the quality of life of our clients and the community through education, compassion, and sincere care”. Owned and operated by a licensed occupational therapist, the program offers a diverse and therapeutic environment. Eulanda Waller, OTR/L seeks to meet the unmet need in the Middle Georgia communities for socially isolated adults with disabilities, those with chronic illnesses, the elderly population, and to provide caregiver respite for the challenges of caregiving.

We have been licensed since 2016 to serve 24 individuals, ages 18 and older, and serves a 50-mile radius from the site.

The health-oriented day program allows individuals to remain at home in the community and participate in an active and healthier lifestyle without permanent nursing home placement. Individuals in personal care homes or assisted living facilities are eligible to participate as well. Research has shown that participation in Adult Day Health Services at least three days a week leads to improved well-being, function and physical abilities, and increased socialization as opposed to being at home with a remote.

The Jones County School District serves 5,119 students and employs 371 teachers.

The district has a pre-K center, four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school with a college and career academy. In addition to teachers and support staff, the maintenance department of five oversees 11 buildings, campuses and sites totaling 443 acres. School nutrition staffs serve 990 breakfasts and 3,060 lunches daily. Transportation has 62 drivers covering 83 routes while transporting 3,700 students daily. The custodial staff of 40 services more than 966,991 square feet of instructional space.

The Jones County School System is on the cutting edge of curriculum through district-wide initiatives relative to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), literacy and college and career readiness.

STEAM activities through project-based learning and critical thinking are embedded in curriculum at all levels pre-K through 12th grade and are evident at each school site.

Jones County school teachers won 11 Bright Ideas grants from Tri-County EMC for initiatives in their schools for various STEAM and literacy activities.

The district was also awarded $2.3 million for the L4GA grant (The Literacy for Learning, Living and Leading in Georgia) from the state of Georgia with funds provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s Striving Readers Grant. These funds are being utilized to improve literacy skills and reading performance of students birth through grade twelve, increasing teacher capacity to teach literacy across all contents and access to tools for improving literacy among students.

The district also received a $3.14 million grant from the state of Georgia through partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia and Central Georgia Technical College for the construction of the Jones County College and Career Academy.

JCCCA currently has 346 unique students participating in dual enrollment, projected to earn over 600 college credits this year, and has over 50 students in the work-based learning and youth apprenticeship program, learning skills relevant to their future careers through employment and hands-on training. Career readiness has extended throughout the district at all levels through portfolio development, career days, guest speakers, field trips, and career-related course offerings.

The district has instructional coaches at each site who work with teachers to establish curriculum alignment in each grade level, provide professional learning, monitor implementation of evidenced based strategies, and to facilitate the use of data-driven instruction tailored to the needs of the individual learners.

A Good Problem to Have...

Technically Speaking

CGTC using teleconferencing technology to address enrollment increases

C

LASSROOM INSTRUCTION IS EVOLVING. Long gone are the days when students sit row-by-row lectured to by a teacher in front of a chalkboard; so too are the more recent days of dry-erase markers, projectors or smart boards.

Actually, gone are the days of a physical teacher pointing to a board. Well, at least technically speaking.

The tele-instructor has arrived.

Tele-who?

The tele-instructor.

Routed by teleconferencing technology, or video conferencing, essentially, this allows a teacher who instructs one class on a campus, while other classes at different sites and centers conference in. Students who call-in use a computer and webcam to connect to the live class from their location.

The model is relatively brand new, equipped with all the same highly qualified attributes. Although it feels robotic, it is not.

The instructor is still human, just with the ability to be in multiple sites at once.

Dr. Amy Holloway, the vice president of academic affairs at CGTC, describes it as a success for the College and now it is making its way to the College’s fastest-growing county for dual enrollment.

“We have had great success over the past years using video conferencing technology to connect students at our campuses and satellite centers. Now, we’re excited to pilot this approach with a dual enrollment partner,” said Holloway. “By leveraging this technology, we can connect Jones County students to live instruction at our Macon or Warner Robins campuses and expand our dual enrollment offerings in high-demand STEM fields such as healthcare and engineering. Our plan is to scale up this approach in the future to reach our dual enrollment partners in other rural counties.”

Perhaps it is time to pump the breaks for a second. This model of instruction is not implemented for every modern classroom - classes all over the state and the College still have quality in-person instruction without it- but expect it to be a solution for students of Jones County College and Career

Academy ( JCCCA) when their building is complete in 2019, for no other reason than distance and access.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded $136,500 from its Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program to CGTC, positioning the College to be a part of USDA’s $39.6 million investment into more than 4.5 million rural Americans in 40 states, beginning with Jones County.

Several rural-serving institutions nationwide, including CGTC, will use the grant funding to increase access to education, workforce training, and health care opportunities for their communities. CGTC will support the use of video-conferencing technology for STEM-related dual enrollment at JCCCA. While innovative distance learning technology is not new to the College, it is advantageous. Jones County accounts for the highest number of dual enrollment students for CGTC’s High School Initiatives.

Out of pure commitment to rural areas and unmatched dedication to the scholarship of well-rounded pupils, CGTC is piloting the approach with high school students.

This grant will complement these previous efforts by adding equipment to connect JCCCA to two of the College’s main campuses, Warner Robins and Macon. Faculty will teach JCCCA students via new videoconferencing units and secure communication access.

Carol Lee, the educational technology director at CGTC, said the College successfully deploys distance learning educational delivery to CGTC’s existing 11 sites with over 125 Cisco Telepresence video conferencing units installed and operational on a daily basis for faculty and staff meetings, credit-hour classes, tutoring sessions, adult education programs, and continuing education programs.

“By providing innovative, technology-delivered instruction to a rural high school partner, CGTC hopes to close the educational gap and link students to educational opportunities that may be located at distances too far to access otherwise,” Lee said.

R AY ’ S D OW N T OW N Development Authority recently received a well-deserved pat on the back from a state resource team visiting Jones County to assist with economic development.

In her opening remarks at a Sept. 17, 2018, meeting with the team and local officials, the Georgia Economic Development Director of Tourism Product Development and team leader, Cindy Eidson, told DDA members that they were doing a great job. In a later break out session, she continued to point out the significant work that had been completed

in downtown Gray. “ We’ve visited many places that have been at this longer and haven’t accomplished anything like you have,” Eidson said.

Sherri Rollins is the chairman of the DDA, and the other members are Cecil Ethridge, Bert King, Vicki Ethridge, Rick Childs, Alan Childs and David Tufts, who is also a councilman for the City of Gray.

During her chairman’s report at the Sept. 10, 2018, DDA meeting, Rollins said, when she looked back on the past year, she realized that they had accom-

plished a lot. She said the design guidelines for the City of Gray were finally finished and were being used.

“The guidelines are beneficial to the progress downtown,” she said.

The chairman talked about the renovation of the office buildings on West Clinton Street that were not really completed until the drainage issues were resolved in July.

“That was a seven-month project,” she said.

All three of the offices are now leased and bringing in monthly income.

“We want to work with the Master Plan. We may need to tweak it, but it will have the same concept,” she said.

Rollins said – when thinking of a plan for moving forward – she realizes the DDA has the responsibility of being good stewards of its funds while being progressive.

done,” she said.

That look back should start four years ago, and it is important to note that everything that has been accomplished by the DDA has been under Rollins’s leadership.

The DDA started its first project in 2014 with the Gray Station building. The official opening of the restored building, located at the corner of West Clinton Street and Atlanta Road, took place Sept.

18, 2015.

Gray Station is the meeting place of the DDA, Main Street Gray and several other local organizations.

According to local historians, the building had been a penny candy story, a gas station, the home of the Gray Police Department, and it most recently housed Jones County’s 24-hour ambulance service.

The Otis Redding Memorial Marker was placed next to the building, and the office for Main Street Gray and the downtown information center is located inside the building.

As well as being a historic landmark in downtown Gray, Main Street Station is also the new home of the city’s trademark fire engine known as Little Red, which 41

The completion of its first project was a huge relief to DDA members.

The concept of Gray Station as the DDA’s first project was born during a walking tour of the city May 12, 2014, with members of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Design Studio. Department manager Carmine Fischetti suggested the city-owned building was a good first project and a good place for the DDA to start.

Fisschetti was asked to design a charrette for the project, and, when the design was received, the concept was to take the building back to look as it did when it was a gas station.

Work actually began on the building in November of 2014, when a section of the brick was stripped down to its original color to assess the condition of the brick.

The ambulance that had been housed in the building since May 1, 2000, was moved out May 15, 2015, and the project then began in earnest.

The garage addition was demolished, and the remainder of paint was stripped from the brick. The portico was constructed, and a new roof was installed.

were completed and the front door was installed, all that was left were the final touches. Those were done before the unveiling of the Redding marker in September of 2015.

The Gray Station project was definitely a public-private endeavor and was assisted by a number of local businesses, including Ace of Gray, Alan Bryan Plumbing, Alan Ethridge/Natural Resources, Appling Brothers grading and paving, Dorsey and Michael Cleghorn, Elite Flooring, Gateway Development, Glass Wholesalers, Hamrick Building and Supply, L&J Home Improvements, Mid GA Electrical Services, Mid State Heating and Air/ Glenn Eubanks, MSSW/Jeff Terry, Over Head Door of Macon, Peach Services, Precision Property Management, Ricky Jones, Scott Tipton, Tony Long & Sons, Vernon Shubert, Warno Cam/Benji Lewis and Williams Hauling, all under the leadership of Rollins.

The DDA held its first meeting in the renovated building Oct. 14, 2015.

FIRST ACQUISITIONS

The first property acquisition by the DDA included three key properties for implementation of Gray’s Master Plan adopted in 2011.

The properties that were purchased in November of 2016 under an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Gray and the Gray Downtown Development Authority was the property formerly known as Butler’s Garage, Kitchen’s Barber Shop and the Haskins Furniture building.

According to the agreement, the combined purchase price for the properties was $350,000.

The Master Plan, created by Ingram and Associates, centers round the Jones County Courthouse and would form a courthouse square, consisting of a combination of small retail businesses, government offices and residential lofts.

Rollins said the goal of the plan was to make Gray a destination that people would want to come and visit. She said the plan is a guide with the main focus around the courthouse.

The first project was chosen partly because the building already belonged to the city and was one of the first to be seen when entering Gray from the north.

The chairman said timing was the key for the property acquisitions. She said the Butler’s Garage building became available and was the catalyst for the purchase of the other buildings.

She said Larry Haskins had been approached previously and was not interested in selling, but he agreed to give the DDA first option if he changed his mind. When the Butler’s Garage sale happened, Haskins was contacted again. This time he agreed to the sale, but part of the agreement was that he has the option to maintain his business for at least a year.

Rollins said the Kitchens Barber Shop building was vacant, and the family was interested in selling when they were contacted. She said the family was excited about the redevelopment of Gray and very excited to be part of the redevelopment of downtown Gray. She said the families were involved in the heritage of Gray and wanted to see it become a thriving area.

The chairman emphasized that no one was displaced by any of the purchases.

OTIS REDDING MARKER She said, once the properties had been identified, DDA members went to city council members for their blessing and to ask for their support in financing the properties.

Rollins said they wanted the first purchase to be a joint venture with the city.

She said that meeting went better than they could have hoped. The DDA presented the council with several options, one of which was using city funds to purchase the properties.

With the assistance of city attorney John Newberry and Jones County Development Authority counsel Kevin Brown, the parties entered into an intergovernmental agreement that allowed the city to finance the purchases for the purpose of the economic development of Gray.

The idea of using reserve funds for a city project had been suggested by city auditors since Gray’s 2013 audit.

The closing on the properties took place Nov. 30, 2016.

Another walking tour with Fischetti and his design team took place March 10, 2017. Rollins said it was great to have an outside perspective, and Fischetti was complimentary of the DDA for doing more than hanging banners.

She said, at the end of the meeting with the DCA team, they talked about the next step for the DDA. That step was getting charrettes from the team and determining the scope of work for 44

At the Sept. 13, 2017 meeting, Rollins said she has been getting quotes for renovations of the former Kitchens Barbershop building. She said her question for board members was if they were ready to get started.

The chairman noted that they already had an interested tenant for the space.

King made a motion to start the project, and it passed unanimously.

Rollins said she was also working on quotes for the exterior façade.

finance report at the meeting included a check for the first rental income from one of the tenants.

The renovation of the Butler’s Garage building was officially started by the 2017 Leadership Jones Class with a clean up of the garage building, and quotes were received for the renovation of the other buildings at 119 and 121 W. Clinton Street.

Main Street Gray held the first event in the Butler’s Garage building Dec. 2, 2017, but DDA members decided no other events would be held there until the renovations were completed.

Rollins said, in addition to cleaning

up the building, the leadership class put together a sponsorship program to help with the cost of the renovations.

Haley Watson, who serves as the Executive Director of the Jones County/ Gray Chamber of Commerce as well as the Main Street Gray Manager, said the leadership class had a goal of raising $11,000.

Rollins said the first steps for the garage building included pressure washing its interior and replacing broken windows.

She said Main Street Gray also helped with the renovation expenses.

At the March 12, 2018, meeting, Rollins said renovations of 121 West Clinton were nearing completion, and the tenant would move in April 1, 2018.

The garage has gotten a new roof, and the site of the former Haskins Furniture building has been grassed. The members had previously voted to grass the lot until the plans for it are determined.

PIEDMONT NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Outdoor recreation is provided by the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, a 35,000-acre wildlife management area northwest of Gray off Highway 11.

Administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge offers visitors the opportunity to see beaver, raccoon, opossum, turkey, deer, over 200 species of birds, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

GOLF

Take the time to tee off right here in Jones County. We have two beautiful courses to choose from: Lake Jonesco Golf Course and Healy Point Golf Course.

LAKE JONESCO is an 18-hole, daily fee public golf facility owned and operated by Jones County Recreational Department. The facility is located on Gray Highway at 834 GA 22, Gray, GA 31032, is open seven days a week, with summer hours from 7:30 a.m. until dark, and tee times are not required.

HEALY POINT GOLF is an 18-hole, daily fee private golf facility owned and operated by River North Communities. The facility is located in River North, 293 River North Blvd., Macon, GA 31211, and is open six days a week (closed on Tuesdays for events and maintenance). Golf lessons are available by appointment. OLD CLINTON

Old Clinton is one of Jones County’s prized possessions. It is architecturally significant for its collection of early 19th century homes and public buildings now on the National Register of Historic Places. Self-guided tours of Old Clinton are free. Advanced arrangements for tour groups may be made by contacting Earlene Hamilton at (478) 986-6383.

JARRELL PLANTATION Nestled in the red clay hills of Georgia, this cotton plantation was owned by a single family for more than 140 years. It survived Gen. Sherman’s March to the Sea, typhoid fever, the cotton boll weevil, the advent of steam power and a transition from farming to forestry. Jarrell Plantation is located off of Highway 18 West at 711 Jarrell Plantation Road, Juliette, GA 31046, and is operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Main Street also works to help provide family friendly activities like Turkey Fest, Tunes & Spoons, and Family Movie Nights to encourage community relations.

ROTARY Rotary is an international network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders and problem-solvers.

Rotary is where people unite to take action. We work to fight disease, support education, save mothers and children and promote local economies.

Rotarians have a passion to create lasting change at home and around the world. With 63 clubs and more than 3,000 members in Central and South Georgia, Rotary members work together to make our communities stronger.

Our local Jones County Rotary Club not only gives back to our Rotary foundation but also to our local community. We sponsor many events within the community as well as hosting several fundraisers throughout the year for different causes.

Some of these include the Jones County Hounds sports program, Jones County College and Career Academy, tree planting at the Morris Bank Recreational Park, Toys for Tots, Chaptacular, JC inclusive playground and Crime Stoppers just to name a few.

Our club meets every Wednesday at 12:00 pm for lunch and a different guest speaker each week. Through our speakers we learn about many different businesses, non-profit organizations and community outreach programs. It allows us to not only stay in touch with our local club but with our community as well. We always welcome guest to join us at any time to see what Rotary is all about and how we may be able to help you.

THE JONES COUNTY LIONS CLUB The Jones County Lions Club was chartered on January 15, 1968 at Crawfords Restaurant in Gray with 27 Charter members. In August of 1971 they purchased the 10 acres on Highway 18 East that is now known as the fairgrounds. Women were allowed to join the club in 1987.

The local club is very active in the Lighthouse program in Atlanta, which collects eye glasses, assists with providing funds for eye exams and glasses, provides braille computers and eye machines to people with poor vision, donates to various community organizations and supports the camp for the blind, Leader Dog, Sight First and eye book programs. Our motto is “We Serve.” We meet the second and fourth Thursday of the month at the fairgrounds. Guests are always welcome.

GRAY JAYCEES The Jaycees is an international non-profit organization made up of young professionals, ages 18-40, who work together to make a difference within their communities. Our local chapter, the Gray Jaycees, provide unique opportunities for our members to develop as leaders while creating valuable relationships with other leaders throughout the state and beyond. The Gray Jaycees are currently seeking new members who wish to join us in our mission to serve the community of Jones County. Some of our recent community events include the Easter Egg Hunt, Drive-in Movie and Christmas Parade and we will be expanding these efforts in the coming year.

OPEN (TBD?) Jones County arts Jones County Arts is a non-profit community organization created to advocate, foster, and promote the arts in Jones County. Currently, the program’s focus is on children’s theatre, with productions of Lion King Junior, Annie Junior and Godspell highlighting the group’s third year. Each production included 20-25 students ages 8-15 years old.

Theatric productions also include opportunities for students to participate in set design, lighting and stage management.

The Jones County Arts is currently part of the county recreation department, giving opportunities for youth to participate in the arts. Plans for expansion of the organization’s programming include opportunities for art or photography classes, art shows, and musical performances. The Jones County Arts is funded by participation fees and sponsorships from local businesses and individuals.
