The Super Bowl and how it changed Terry Bradshaw
BY GEORGE DICKIE
I f you want to hear Terry Bradshaw speak passionately on a subject, ask him which of his four Super Bowl titles was most memorable for him.
“The very first one –Super Bowl IX, absolutely,” the Football Hall of Famer and current Fox Sports analyst says of the 1975 NFL championship game won by his Pittsburgh Steelers over the Minnesota Vikings. “... At that point in your career you’re still uncertain about who you are and (questioning) ‘Am I any good?’ And you win that and all of a sudden everything changes. You’re now part of that fraternity of NFL-winning quarterbacks. You are a Super Bowl champion. Your team, the city, the ownership – there’s so much pride, you’re so proud of yourself. You feel good about yourself. That’s a nice feeling because we don’t get that that often. It was euphoric.
“It changes you,” he continues. “It helps you
grow up and ... you now belong, permanently.”
Come Sunday, Feb. 5, one team’s players will get to experience what Bradshaw did 42 years ago when the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots clash at Houston’s NRG Stadium in Super Bowl LI. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will call the action on the field for Fox with Erin Andrews and Chris Myers reporting from the sidelines, and Bradshaw, Curt Menefee, Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Jimmy Johnson providing analysis in the studio.
At halftime, Lady Gaga will perform, though at this writing it was uncertain from where. Reports indicated she wanted to perform from the roof of NRG Stadium, which would make for a logistical puzzle for technicians and an insurance nightmare for bureaucrats. There were even rumors of doing the stunt as a pre-taped commercial leading up to the game but nothing concrete had been decided.
BY LINDSAY MACDONALD
Speaking of commercials, the rate for a 30-second spot during Super Bowl LI is expected to top $5 million. If that sounds outrageous, there would be a number of companies and entities that would disagree with you, among them Kia, Snickers, Skittles, Wix and Avocados From Mexico, all of which have bought ad time. If the game is a dud, these usually serve as the highlight of the evening.
As has been the case with past NFL title games, there will also be new technological tweaks to the broadcast. This year, Fox is featuring an enhancement it calls “Be the Player,” which allows viewers to follow a play from the perspective of any player on the field – without the benefit of a helmet cam.
“They’re actually better than helmet cams,” explains Fox Sports President and COO Eric Shanks, “because what we’ve done is we’re collecting so much data on each play with this array of cameras that we’re installing with our
partners at Intel that we don’t even need cameras in the helmet anymore. And it’s not computer generated. This is the actual play in video format as if there was a camera in their helmet that we’re able to fly inside of any player’s helmet to see what they’re seeing at the release of the ball, when they’re catching a punt, anything. It’s pretty spectacular.”
But amid all the sideshows and techie bells and whistles, the game will still be the thing. That’s especially the case for Bradshaw, who at 68 still gets that game-day adrenaline rush despite not being down on the field.
“You’re going on live so there’s a rush, a good rush,” he says. “Sitting in the studio, there’s the excitement of being there with your buddies and (discussing) what’s going to happen. You have to go to a live event to get the tingle. You get that, for sure.”
‘BEYOND’: LUKE & HOLDEN – WILL THE REAL BIG BROTHER PLEASE STAND UP?
Screener spoke with Duffield about the challenge of playing a child who is also kind of an adult, especially where Holden and his family are concerned.
“I mean, it’s cool playing that sort of adolescent behavior and mannerisms that you get to call upon,” Duffield says. “It can be very comedic, it can be fun in dramatic situations, so it’s an interesting way to sort of dissect a scene and bring that sort of adolescent behavior back in.”
The place you see that duality come out most is in Holden’s scenes with his younger brother, Luke (Jonathan Whitesell), who finds himself taking on the older brother role as Holden tries to navigate his new world.
Ironically enough, Whitesell is actually older than Duffield in real life, which aided in both of their performances.
“It’s a funny dynamic, just having the kind of role reversal of him being the older brother in actuality but Luke having to fill that position,” Whitesell says. “Luke kind of throws him in hot water sometimes and throws him to the lions, but I think it’s all for a purpose, and his heart’s in a good place because he just wants him to have some normalcy in his life.”
We’re not sure taking your 13-year-old brother to a college party was the right move for Luke, but we can at least agree that his heart is always in the right place.

Ramsay helps nurture young talent on ‘MasterChef Junior’
Talk to Gordon Ramsay and it becomes very apparent he relishes his role as host, mentor and motivator for youthful aspiring chefs on “MasterChef Junior.”
“Having four kids of my own,” he says, “I know how distracted they get today with Internet, social media, and so this isn’t about games. This is about installing confidence and letting these individuals understand that there’s no teacher, there’s no parent; we’re going to go on this journey together and I’m going to show you everything I’ve got and you’re going to come out of this so much better than you did before you got here. ... So no fear, great understanding and I don’t know, I suppose hand on heart I would say I’m at my happiest and I’m in my absolute glory when I have a chance to work with such young, hungry talent.”
Season 5 of the Fox culinary competition series opens Thursday, Feb. 9, bringing forth 40 home cooks ages 8-13 to take on challenges such as a beach club pop-up restaurant and cooking for surprise celebrity guests such as world-renowned chef Wolfgang Puck. Ramsay will once again offer words of advice and encouragement to his young charges and evaluate their creations alongside fellow judge Christina Tosi.
And hopefully nurture their interest in the culinary arts into a lifetime pursuit.
“That’s the first thing that I said to them when they walk in,” he says. “ ‘Right. No Mum, no Dad, no teacher, no headmaster. I’m going to be the best coach you ever had in your entire life. You ready for the ride of your life? Let’s go.’ ”

What book are you currently reading?
“ ‘Manchester by the Sea.’ I haven’t seen the program yet. So it was based on a true story. So my daughter Megan is also at (Oxford) Brookes University and she’s studying psychology so she just finished reading it and she passed it on to me.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“We finished taping and I took (daughter) Meg to a little Italian grill at the end of Sepulveda and Bel Air Crest (in Los Angeles), and I started off with something really simple. And it was a just sort of fresh mozzarella and tomato salad as an appetizer, and then for my entrée I had a ... smothered double pork chop with a cappelini ... . So we shared that as an entrée last night.”
What is your next project?
“This summer, we’re putting together the most amazing live event on Fox and it’s called ‘The F Word,’ and we’re searching the country for the best families where they go head to head and they’ll compete for the ultimate prize of who is the most talented family. So in that family could be a great aunt. You know how incredible food comes from those generations, a grandma and granddad. So we’re looking at a family of four against a family of four.”

Though a new documentary has the general title “Oklahoma City,” many people likely can determine which specific event it covers.
Making its television debut as a PBS “American Experience” presentation Tuesday, Feb. 7 (check local listings) after its Sundance Film Festival showings last month, the two-hour program recalls the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995 – still one of the most devastating examples of homegrown terrorism to date.
Resulting in 168 deaths and injuries to 675 others, the truck explosion was executed by dismissed military veteran and anti-government activist Timothy McVeigh, whose own words are heard in excerpts from 60 hours-plus of jail interviews incorporated by writer-director Barak Goodman.
The authors of a biography of McVeigh gave the documentary team those tapes, and Goodman says, “His complete conviction of the rightness of his own cause, his own actions, is so evident in the tapes. We use them sparingly, but I think when we use them, they’re very, very revelatory of who this guy is and was ... and, specifically, the fact that he was part of a larger movement. He was part of a psychology and a set of beliefs and a set of values that much predated him and was sort of the milieu in which he formed his own particular, evil designs.”
The standoffs involving federal agents at Idaho’s Ruby Ridge – which gets its own “American Experience” focus from filmmaker Goodman in another new episode Feb. 14 – and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, are said to have inspired McVeigh, who eventually was convicted and executed for the Oklahoma City bombing. FBI veterans, journalists, and survivors and relatives of victims of the attack are among those offering comments in the documentary.
“American Experience” executive producer Mark Samels allows that since
‘American Experience’ recalls the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing
the events of “Ruby Ridge” preceded those of “Oklahoma City,” airing the latter film first “was something we wrestled with, back and forth. I think in many ways, ‘Oklahoma City’ was the destination that we wanted to arrive at a year-and-a half ago when we set out on this journey. The interest of the grand story of ‘Oklahoma City’ will create, I think, a curiosity about ‘Ruby Ridge,’ which has some more dimensions. It could have gone either way, but I feel comfortable with the way we decided.”
Now a Senior Fellow of the Southern Poverty Law Center, former reporter Mark Potok is an expert on extremism who covered both the Waco and Oklahoma City situations, as well as McVeigh’s trial. Featured in the “Oklahoma City” program, he reflects, “I think there’s a real impulse on the part of a lot of people to say, ‘Oh, those people who blow up buildings and murder hundreds of people and so on are out of their minds,’ and some of them certainly are, but that’s not true of McVeigh.
“If you think of what happened in Oklahoma City and similar kinds of events around the country, and you think of (them) simply as the product of people who are off their meds, you’re making a grave mistake. There are huge historical movements and things that are happening that ultimately can kind of explain what this violence is all about. I just think it’s a bad move to think they’re all crazy people and they’re kind of an interesting truecrime movie-of-the-week. I think there’s a lot more to McVeigh and this whole movement than that.”

Your “Scandal” co-stars Tony Goldwyn and Scott Foley also have directed episodes of the show. Do you have that ambition?
I shadowed Tom Verica (an executive producer and frequent director of the show) at the end of our fourth season, and my
Katie LeClerc of “Switched at Birth” on Freeform
“In the age of Netflix, I just finished ‘The OA’ ... I devoured that in two days. And we’ve got ‘The Walking Dead,’ I’ve really enjoyed ‘American Housewife,’ and I like (NBC’s) ‘Chicago’ shows. It’s a pretty broad range. I just like television!”
Vanessa Hudgens of “Powerless” on NBC
“I love the workplace comedies. I watch ‘The Office.’ I watch ‘Parks and Recreation.’ I love ‘American Horror Story.’ I’ve been watching that a ton.
‘Mr. Robot’ is so good. Of course, ‘Game of Thrones,’ I’m ready for them to come back. (Laughs) Those are my top ones.”
OF “SCANDAL” ON
whole body loves it and my brain loves it. You get away with a lot as an actor – like a lot of downtime – but it feels like when you’re directing, every cell of your being is devoted to telling the story.
There’s something intoxicating about that, but “Scandal” has so many moving parts, I could never jump in the deep end that way. It’ll be a process for me, but one that I hope the future allows.
Though Hotch is no longer a character on “Criminal Minds,” do you think you still could return as his exgirlfriend?
Bless their hearts, I love that family of people. Since it’s (co-produced by) ABC Studios, ABC was very good about making it work when I was recurring on both shows. Schedules change by the minute, though, and I think it would give everybody endless panic attacks and migraines. For the time being, everybody stays in their own camps, but with great love.
You’ve also made a mark on several game shows, and it appears you really get into playing. True?
Yes! And I got to win “Jeopardy!” (Games) scare me to death, but I’ve had some real fun with them. “Jeopardy!” was big for me, because I got to win $50,000 for a charity (Operation Blankets of Love) that was nascent, just starting out, so it really had an impact.
Tamara Taylor of “Bones” on Fox
“Well, right now, I’m kind of hooked on ‘Happy Valley.’ I love ‘Game of Thrones.’ ... I haven’t quite landed in ‘Westworld.’ I love ‘Atlanta.’ And ‘The Get Down’ has blown my mind.”
Lili Reinhart of “Riverdale” on The CW
“’Game of Thrones.’ And I’ve just started to watch ‘Westworld.’ I’ve been in Canada filming my show, and they don’t have HBO GO there, so I binge-watch my shows when I’m here (in the U.S.).”

Super Bowl LI airs Sunday, Feb. 5 on Fox, and once again former NFL quarterback Troy Aikman will be in the broadcast booth as an analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Joe Buck. As a broadcaster, this will be the fourth Super Bowl for Aikman, who spent twelve years in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. He joined Fox’s NFL broadcast team in 2001; just one season after he retired from the NFL. Football fans, at least Cowboys fans, have fond memories of Aikman’s playing career. Considered the top college quarterback out of UCLA (and formerly Oklahoma) in 1989, he was the first overall pick in the NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys and new owner Jerry Jones, who had just inserted Jimmy Johnson to replace Tom Landry as the coach. Aikman and the Cowboys went from 1-15 in his rookie season to winning three Super Bowls following the 1992, 1993 and 1995 seasons. Aikman’s post-season passing statistics during those Super Bowl runs are some of the best ever. Along with Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin he became the face of the franchise, and was always hailed for his leadership qualities as well as his pure mechanics as a traditional pocket passing quarterback. Time would take its toll on Aikman and the Cowboys, and he walked away from football due to health issues following the 2000 season. The Cowboys’ loss was Fox’s gain, and his professional insight will be a big part of the fan experience during the broadcast of Super Bowl LI.

With Chicago making news continually with shootings and other violence, a series such as “APB” is especially timely.
Premiering Monday, Feb. 6, on Fox, the hourlong crime drama stars Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Justin Kirk (“Weeds,” “Tyrant”) as Gideon Reed, a tech whiz/entrepreneur who takes control of a crimeridden Windy City district after witnessing a friend’s murder, in the process resolving to remake its police force into a technically innovative unit and challenge the way the district fights crime.
“He’s a billionaire from humble beginnings,” the actor explains, “but he made his money being a tech genius and building rockets and such things. And then a thing happens in his community and he determines that it might not be a bad idea to lend his expertise and dollars to the local crumbling police district that he resides in. And so our show is about all the things good and bad that might happen if something like that were to go down.”
Kirk, a 47-year-old native of the Pacific Northwest and Minneapolis, is a familiar face on TV and in movies, thanks to a stream of steady work since the late ‘90s. His first acting role was at the age of 7 in a local college play and in his teens he attended the Children’s Theater School in Minneapolis. But he recalls that he wasn’t your typical child actor.
“I was by no means a ‘look at me’ child,” he says. “I didn’t put on shows in the living room or anything. Actually, my mother describes me as a stoic young person. ... As a matter of fact throughout my teen years when I was acting, apparently if I remember correctly, I had trouble being heard from on a stage.
“That’s not a problem anymore,” he says with a laugh. “So I don’t know, but here we are, and it’s a good life.”
Name: Justin Kirk
Birth date: May 28, 1969
Birthplace: Salem, Ore. (grew up in Washington state and Minneapolis)
Training: A two-year conservatory acting program at Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York TV credits include: “New York News,” “The Pretender,” “Jack & Jill,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Angels in America,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Jack & Bobby,” “Without a Trace,” “Everwood,” “Weeds,” “Animal Practice,” “The Blacklist,” “Tyrant,” “American Dad!” (voice), “Wayward Pines,” “Modern Family,” “You’re the Worst,” “Manhattan,” “The Crossroads of History”
Movie credits include: “Love! Valour! Compassion!” (1997), “Chapter Zero” (1999), “Outpatient” (2002), “Flannel Pajamas” (2006), “Puccini for Beginners” (2006), “Against the Current” (2009), “Four Boxes” (2009), “See You in September” (2010), “L!fe Happens” (2011), “Goats” (2012), “30 Beats” (2012), “Sexual Secrets” (2014), “Walter” (2015)
Favorite book: “I’m so bad at favorites. I was reading two John Waters books at a time while I was working on this show, one called ‘Role Models,’ one called ‘Carsick.’ And right now I’m reading ‘The Daily Show’ oral history, which just came out. I like rock bios. I’ll read any rock biography. There’s one I also just finished about one of my favorite bands, the Replacements, called ‘Trouble Boys’ that I liked a lot.”
Favorite movie: “There’s a movie that was always a favorite of mine – going back to John Waters – called ‘Multiple Maniacs,’ which was his first movie with talking. Pre-’Pink Flamingos’ – I think it was like 1970 or something. And it was never available on DVD. I think I’ve seen it on a VHS cassette several times when I was younger. Anyway, this year they remastered it and did an arthouse tour and I took one of my co-stars, Caitlyn (Stasey), on our show and we went to this arthouse theater in Chicago and saw it. So I liked that one. I also always loved a movie called ‘Joe Versus the Volcano,’ the John Patrick Shanley movie, the first Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan (movie). So that’s a movie that’s retained its power for me over the years.”
Favorite musical artist: “I was a teen in the 1980s in Minneapolis and so I grew up with the Replacements and Husker Du and our dearly departed Prince. I was actually an extra in a Prince concert movie called ‘Sign ‘o’ the Times.’ I spent three days at Paisley Park just watching them play and that was pretty cool. Minneapolis was a pretty great place to grow up in at that time.”

Jenny O’Hara and Steve Agee guest star; Diedrich Bader also stars.
8 p.m. on KOED American Experience
Fears of an attack by foreign terrorists drew a good deal of focus during the most recent U.S. presidential campaign, but the gripping
new episode “Oklahoma City” revisits what remains the worst domestic terrorist attack in U.S. history: former soldier Timothy McVeigh’s 1995 bombing of a federal building in the Oklahoma capital city, killing 168 people and injuring 675 others. The program includes interviews with survivors and others directly touched by the horrors of that day.

9:30 p.m. on COM Detroiters
Maybe it’s true that aspiring advertising men Sam (Sam Richardson, the relentlessly pleasant aide Richard on “Veep”) and Tim (former “Saturday Night Live” scribe Tim Robinson) have very little in terms of money, connections or, if we’re being honest, talent. What they do have, however, is optimism and ambition to build a local ad empire, as long as these longtime friends can stay based in their beloved Michigan hometown. This new comedy series is executive-produced by Lorne Michaels and Jason Sudeikis.

SATURDAY
7 p.m. on LIFE Movie: From Straight A’s to XXX

Faced with a staggering tuition bill, Miriam Weeks, a freshman at North Carolina’s Duke University, decides to earn cash as an erotic actress under the name Belle Knox. After a male classmate at the conservative Southern school recognizes and outs her, however, Miriam is subjected to slut-shaming, death threats and unwanted national media attention.
7 p.m. on HBO Movie: Central Intelligence
Despite mixed reviews, this 2016 action comedy still blew the roof off the box-office, thanks to the potent chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and comedy superstar Kevin Hart, cast here as, respectively, a rogue CIA agent and his former classmate, who team up to save the world from a terrorist. Aaron Paul, Amy Ryan and Jason Bateman co-star, plus watch for Melissa McCarthy in an uncredited cameo. Ike Barinholtz (“The Mindy Project”) is among the screenplay co-writers. 10:29 p.m. on KJRH Saturday Night Live
In playing a certain businessmanturned-politician, Alec Baldwin surely has been no stranger to this show lately ... but even before that run, he had been a guest host many times. He scores his 17th turn in that role with this new episode, and anyone should be able to guess that some Washington, D.C.-oriented humor will be on the menu here. Music is supplied by Ed Sheeran, whose singles “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill” are both on the charts.
