Patricia Heaton isn’t wagering on another series run that lasts almost a decade, but she’s hopeful.
After spending nine seasons each on “Ever ybody Loves Raymond” (for which she won two Emmy Awards) and “ The Middle,” the actress tests the sitcom waters anew as CBS’ “Carol’s Second Act” premieres Thursday, Sept. 26.
Heaton stars as a divorced mom and retired teacher who seeks her “second act” as a medical intern, imparting life lessons to much-younger peers – and also, on occasion, to an experienced doctor (Kyle MacLachlan) who’s mildly perplexed to have Carol under his wing.
it’s important, at any time in your life, to keep challenging yourself. I think it’s a good sign that I’m excited about this. It’s very exciting to go back to multicamera, too (as ‘Raymond’ was), and do it live in front of an audience.”
Also featuring Ashley Tisdale as Carol‘s daughter and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (“Baby Daddy”) as another intern, “Carol’s Second Act” is described by cocreator Halpern as “that fantasy of the road not taken, the path not followed. We thought, ‘ What character would we most like to tell this stor y through?,’ and we loved the idea of an older woman ... somebody at a time in her life where she might traditionally be expected to retreat or to become less visible. And we thought. ‘Let’s put her center-stage and put her in an environment where her age is actually her strength.’ ”
Patricia Heaton tries for another
long run with ‘Carol’s Second Act’
Also an executive producer of the new show, along with her husband David Hunt and series creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins (“ Trophy Wife”), Heaton reports that “this came after ‘ The Middle’ was all done. I think what was perfect about it was that my kids are pretty much out of the house, and my second long-running show was done, and I was feeling a bit at sea not knowing what I was doing. I’m no longer a full-time mom, and I didn’t have a job as an actress, and I very much felt the things that a person like Carol would feel.
“It’s been interesting to go on this journey with everyone and with Carol and explore that,” Heaton says. “I think
Adds Haskins, the stepdaughter-in-law of the iconic Julie Andrews, “As Carol brings her expertise and her experience and her talent to the hospital universe, Patty (Heaton) has brought her experience and her comedy to us and has inhabited this character and brought her to life in ways that have been so delightful to see. And it was just magical on the pilot, the first day we shot, to see Patty come out and read our lines and make them much funnier than they were before. Which was the intention.”
Barry Williams of “A Very Brady Renovation” on HGTV
“I’m watching ‘Big Little Lies’ right now ‘The Crown’ was a great investment. ‘Game of Thrones’ from episode one. I didn’t even like it until the middle of the second season and then I couldn’t stop. ... Another show that I watch a lot is ‘Ozark’ because I live in the Ozark Mountains.”

Scar y cakes come to life on Food Network’s ‘Halloween Cake-Off ’
Duff Goldman has always had a love of making his cakes moving works of art, employing hydraulics, servo motors and sound and light effects to bring what would otherwise be static confections to life. Which is why the “Ace of Cakes” baker feels right at home hosting a competition series rife with that caliber of creativity that debuts this week on Food Network.
In “Halloween Cake-Off,” a four-episode stunt series premiering Monday, Sept. 23, four professional bakers are challenged with creating Halloweenthemed cakes that not only must be able to hit the mark taste-wise for judges Goldman, Dan Langan and Waylynn Lucas, but also transform in mystifying ways that leave them blown away by the outside-thebox thinking.
One such creation in the series that did it for Goldman was a dragon cake that rose up on its hind legs, spread its wings and shot a seven-foot stream of fire from its mouth.
“It was amazing,” Goldman explains. “And not just the transformation itself – what the contestant did was incredible – but what I was really blown away about, she showed me kind of the behind-thescenes, inside the cake. She showed me how she did everything. Because I’m such a nerd; I love all that stuff I love looking at the mechanics of something and just everything she had done was just super smart and really clean. It was really well-crafted and she controlled the whole thing from a computer She had a Bluetooth hook-up from the cake to
hundreds if not thousands of dollars making these moving cakes, given all the technology involved, although Goldman could not say for certain. But what he could say is that while these cakes not only had to have the “wow!” factor, they also had to be delicious because at the end of the day, that’s what a cake competition is all about.
“(The) thing that I really insisted on,” he says, “ was the flavor counts just as much as the beauty of the cake and the transformation. Because it’s really important. If you know how to build one of these cakes – you know something with some special effects and some non-edible materials – if you really know how to do it right, you do not have to skimp on the quality. You can do it with delicious cake just as easily as you can do it with grocery store cake.”

The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards
The final season of “Game of Thrones” leads the pack of nominees as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences airs its annual primetime awards ceremony for television excellence from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The HBO blockbuster has 14 nods going into tonight’s race, but factoring in its nominations from the earlier Creative Arts Awards, the show shatters a 25-year-old record for most nominations (32) for a comedy or drama series in a single year. The TV academy will follow the recent Oscars format and present tonight’s Emmys without a celebrity host.

Musician and former “Tonight Show” music director Kevin Eubanks, his three brothers and a sister-in-law face off against a team comprising 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, his brother, wife and mother-in-law in the second half of tonight’s episode. The hour opens, however, with a repeat of a fan favorite game from last June, in which spouses John Legend and Chrissy Teigen plus family members compete against Lisa Vanderpump and the cast of the reality show “Vanderpump Rules.”

The Masada compound is abuzz with excitement as the Messiah (Tyson Ritter) has finally arrived in the new episode “Overture.” Meanwhile, as the clock ticks down to Armageddon, Jesse (Dominic Cooper) and his fellow heroes undertake one last, desperate assault, a final Hail Mary play to forestall the end of the world. Unfortunately, God (Mark Harelik) uses every devious trick in His all-seeing arsenal to keep His opponents divided and off their game. Elsewhere, Eugene (Ian Colletti) gets out of prison.

Veteran coach Adam Levine shook up many fans with his announcement at the end of Season 16 that he was departing the show, leaving Blake Shelton as the only remaining original cast member still on the panel for Season 17. Luckily, the producers didn’t have to cast a wide net for a replacement: Shelton’s real-life partner, Gwen Stefani, who has three seasons as coach under her belt, will move into Levine’s big red chair. Kelly Clarkson and John Legend also are back, along with host Carson Daly.

The Emmy-winning comedy blockbuster opens its 11th and final season with “New Kids on the Block,” which finds new mom Haley (Sarah Hyland) slavishly trying to follow advice in her parenting books, although Phil and Claire (Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen) keep advocating for their own timetested child-rearing strategies.

Actress Cobie Smulders gets to show surprising new range in this new series adaptation of graphic novels by Greg Rucka, which revolves around Dex Parios (Smulders), a sharpwitted former Marine now making ends meet as a private eye in Portland, Ore. It’s gritty work, but Dex doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty as she takes care of a younger brother (Cole Sibus), struggles to pay off a gambling debt and juggles a love life that’s ... complicated.
