Settlement conference in hospital suit set for April

RINGING IN RESOLUTIONS Locals make 2019 plans for improvement

By TESINA JACKSON

tjackson@tahlequahdailypress.com

More people are planning to see places next year and have adventures, instead of worrying about losing weight or finding love. Some say this will help them feel more content with life and themselves. For those looking to find love, perhaps making new friends is the way to move that direction. If meeting others is important, one way is to become more interesting by getting a degree, taking a work

A settlement conference order has been scheduled in a civil case where a prospective medical resident is suing the local hospital, claiming she was the victim of discrimination based on her age. According to court documents filed May 15 against Northeastern Health System and Osteopathic Medical Education Consortium Oklahoma Inc., Madelyn H. Corkern applied in March 2017 for a job as medical resident of the family medicine program. Upon receiving Corkern’s application, Janie Rodriguez, coordinator of the graduate medical education department, sent an email to the hiring committee, advising against accepting Corkern as a resident. Documents state the reason given for not hiring Corkern was that she was an “older (50ish) physician” who was at a “different stage in life” than the other residents. Rodriguez’s email

PIRITUAL, MENTAL and physical health are common foundations for New Year’s resolutions. For those who consider an afterlife, as well as living a meaningful life, faith is often the at the core of beliefs regardless of a religious choice. With goals of tidying her house and improving her body, Molly Peterson also plans to read her Bible and pray more. “I also want to put more efforts into maintaining friendships,” said Peterson. Five years ago, a friend proposed they email each other once a week. “What was a passing acquaintance has become a beautiful friendship,” Peterson said. Looking to enhance his life, Mike Allen said his goals for 2019 are to learn to play the flute, to meditate, and to get

more spiritual-minded. For Linda Callaway, spending more time working on art in her art studio was first on her list. Health and peace of mind are what Maia Weaver will focus on next year. She plans to get her teeth fixed, and learn to forgive faster. Realistic New Year’s resolutions have the most chance of success, like losing 20 pounds in a year instead of 100, or exercising 15 minutes three days a week instead of two hours

daily. This helps to build a routine that can be added to, and add to successful longterm results. Some people are aiming at being kinder to themselves and choosing to love the person looking back in the mirror instead of critiquing every little thing, such as eyes too big or too small, or hips too wide or narrow. Travel is at the top of the 2019 New Year’s resolutions list for more than half of those answering a national survey.

It’s going to be lots of fun. We also have a champagne toast at midnight and a confetti cannon.” The Venue will have door prizes on the hour, starting with an Amazon Echo at 9 p.m., Powerbeats3 Wireless Headphones at 10, a 32-inch LED TV at 11, and a $250 gift card to Meigs Jewelry at midnight.
