YOTA DEVICES PAVILION

Mobile World Congress ‘14 1st prize

YOTA DEVICES PAVILION_2014 Type of projecte: Booth/Exhibition Project: Yota Devices Pavilion Location: Barcelona, Spain Status: 1st prize competition, Built Opening: 24/02/2014 Closing: 27/02/2014 Client: Yota Devices, Moscow Built up area: 120 m2 Project: External Reference: Carmelo Zappulla, Nacho Toribio, Collaborators: Luca Brucculeri Led programming, installation: Mid Prodcution: Craft Art Labor, MedioDesign Music: Stefano Vendramin

Once again, one year after realizing the first Yota Pavillion in 2013, External Reference Architects have been able to succesfully produce an immersive experience to the visitors. This year’s industry-defining event, Mobile World Congress, was once again hosted in the Mobile World Capital Barcelona, at two world-class venues, Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuic. More than 85.000 attendees from over 200 countries were trated to a wealth of learning and networking opportunities, product showcases and announcements, inspiration and innovation. Also this year the main purpose of the booth is inducing a deep sensory experience through light, music and projections.

deformations: size increasing for incapsulating the devices or size reduction for integrating the projection areas. Moreover this landscape cover the functional areas such as: technical rooms and two meeting rooms. 2. Outside it is the result of the erosion. A dark dotted surface whose pattern allows to perceive the mesmerizing light effects of the inside. All in all, the whole project should be thought of as a welcoming plaza where the visitors can appreciate a sensorial experience and discover the new products showcased by Yota Devices.

Above, a topographic ceiling generates an attractive, evocative call, punctuated by the deep music rhythm. Below, an eroded landscape dialogues with the ceiling. This techno landscape has two different natures. 1.Inside it is made of a series of ribbons and it is smooth, clear and sensual. It embodies all the needs of the Pavilion through simples ribbons

YOTA DEVICES PAVILION

Mobile World Congress ‘13 1st prize

YOTA DEVICES PAVILION_2013 Type of projecte: Booth/Exhibition Project: Yota Devices Pavilion Location: Barcelona, Spain Status: 1st prize competition, Built Opening: 25/02/2013 Closing: 28/02/2013 Client: Yota Devices, Moscow Built up area: 82 m2 Project: External Reference: Carmelo Zappulla, Nacho Toribio, Collaborators: Katinka Szodenyi Mapping: Onion Lab Led programming, installation: Mid Prodcution: Craft Art Labor, MedioDesign

This year, at the Mobile World Congress (the world’s largest fair of mobile industry), visitors could see the Yota Devices Pavilion, where the Russian company Yota Devices presented YotaPhone - the first Android phone with a liquid crystal display (LCD) and a paper display (EPD). The company also presented its new LTE modems and routers.

During this experience the visitors will be hypnotised by synchronized lights, sounds and colours, which produce a closely enveloping atmosphere.

The purpose of the booth is twofold: to exhibit these innovative products and also induce a deep sensory experience. The Yota Pavilion Project aims to generate an artificial tech-scape which integrates several levels of design. This artificial landscape regulates the circulation of the visitors through a system of thin bars. The whole project should be thought of as a permeable, interactive sculpture, which consists of arrays of thin tubes with hanging capsules containing devices. By exploring the sculpture, users will be able to walk around and explore the products presented by Yota.

South Korea pays homage to oceans and coasts by opening the Yeosu Expo 2012 with the slogan: “The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities”. Spain names its exhibit “Spain Explores”, calling attention to its unrivalled tradition of geographical exploration and scientific discovery. The project’s mission is to showcase Spain’s nautical discoveries by turning a didactic exhibit into a sensory experience which aims to go to the heart of the visitor. The exhibition project consists of 4 main stages: 1. In the entrance hall, the sea routes pioneered by Spanish voyagers are shown and explained to the visitor. 2. The central space shows three key moments in Spanish seafaring: respectively, Colombo’s, Malaspina’s and Malaspina 2010’s expeditions. 3. The key area in the project is Deep Ocean. The visitors will enter a space which is lit up with samples containing water collected at a depth of 5000m. The shape of the samples is reminiscent of the tubes used by the Malaspina 2010 Expedition. This recent circumnavigation carried out by the Hesperides’ crew has allowed

scientists to collect important data concerning the seas across the Earth. In this area, Hesperides’ samples become more complex, turning into hi-tech glazed amphorae which generate a sort of abyssal topography. One of the key features of this experience is the projected mapping, which gives vitality to part of the installation through showing the vibrating water. Thus, Hesperides’ scientific research finally turns into a liquid luminescent landscape which recalls the abyss. 4. In the last room, a Dymaxion 11m map presents Hesperides’ discoveries. Once more, the enclosed water is the generative and informative pixel within the installation. The intention of the pavilion is to present its contributions and proposals for the future in response to the problems and threats which global warming represents for the marine environment. This new multinational gathering will provide an excellent opportunity to reassert Spain’s commitment to maintaining the balance and sustainability of marine ecosystems. (www.accioncultural.es) In short, Expo Yeosu 2012 offers Spain the perfect platform to strengthen its ties with

This exhibition aims to show the histoy of Arab culture. Hence, 20 topics have been identified and constrained by 20 glazing enclosures. These latter generate an inverted topography hanging from the ceiling which provokes new and unpredictable visions to the user. All the contents are projected onto these enclosures so as to map the inner and the outer empty surfaces with dynamic and interactive media.

How can a garment float in the middle of a box? This showcase is based on the premise stated in this question and its answer consists in finding its tectonic solution. Hence, as the context of the project is a small white box, it is feasible to deploy a dense wires net able to fix the garments. For this reason, the sides of the box are used as frame for weaving by repeatedly crossing, a single nylon thread through a spikes pattern. As a consequence, this system of lines generates a new material condition with new properties. The whole is more than the sum of its parts: an over scaled transparent tissue able to freeze the garments inside of its fibers. The design matter consists of: 5000 spikes and 7000m of rainbow nylon wire.

PERU LONDON PAVILION

Incas’ stones INCAS’ STONES 2012 Type of project: Exhibition pavilion Project: Incas’ stones Location: London, UK Status: Competition Handing over date of project: August 2012 Client: Prom Peru Built up area: 200 m2 Project team: Nacho Toribio, Carmelo Zappulla Collaborators: D. Rodriguez, E. Rodriguez Budget: 20.000 €

Designing a contemporary exhibition space which represents a country needs unquestionably a strict analysis of its values and identity.

Corn fiber panels will used to manifacture the modules.

We started with a detailed study of the Peruvian physical topography and natural resources from the North to the South. This method of analysis allowed to highlight peculiarities of this country in terms of culture, art, history, gastronomy. The way to materialize this exhibition system comes directly from Peru’s artistic legacy and the interpretation of the stone construction system developed by the Incas. A systematization of Incas’ pattern produces the generation of a modular system of construction which defines all the program of the exhibition. All the exhibition wants to be interpreted as a spatial, material system composed of modular and wooden pieces. The geometry of these modules configures infinite possibilities, responds to many functions and adapts to different locations. In fact, these parts are easily stackable, storable and transportable.

In November 2011 the Istituto Europeo di Design is delighted to throw open the doors to its new campus. And naturally it is doing so by showing off its investigation. We’ve been invaded by a series of beings that are genetic specialists in welcoming talent. You’ll find them walking through the entrance hall, the Open Spaces, the main hall. They’ve taken over the entire school! There’s no need to worry! they’re completely peaceful and harmless. Simply feed them with a few minutes of your time and you’ll be rewarded with the experience of a familiar reality, life at IED, narrated simultaneously through six heads. Feel free to stroke their stylised metal legs and a colony of digital spiders will weave you a tapestry of creativity on which you can walk through an imaginary landscape. Close your eyes for a minute and let yourself be led by the beings of the Future Design Generation to the magic place where all great ideas come from.

RAS GALLERY 2011 Type of project: Commercial space Project: Ras Gallery Location: Barcelona, Spain Status: Competition, 3rd prize Handing over date of project: 2011 Client: ACTAR Built up area: 200 m2 Project team: Nacho Toribio, Carmelo Zappulla with M. Tepedino Collaborators: J. Pierre Paulet, M. Savino

In accordance with the conditions that the client specifies in the guideline, two essential requirements have to be met in the future project for the gallery RAS of Barcelona: to preserve the bookcase designed by Jaime Salazar and to keep the budget to the minimum. So, the design process was based not only on the preservation of the mentioned furniture, but also on applying the concept of minimum resources to the design aspects as well. For this reason, instead of introducing languages which are alien to the context of the current gallery, the project started from the same geometry and functional base of the existing bookcase, generating a process of mutation of its DNA and adapting it to new demands.

arrangement. The rest of the program has been planned using the same strategy and following the same parametric generation. Moreover, the exhibition space gallery is supplied with a low bench which will not affect the artworks heights but will, on the contrary, show more flexible, especially in those moments in which cultural events don’t take place. Regarding the use of materials, there are only two in the project: recycled wood panels ( 2cm thickness ) and led lights. With regard to the budget, the low cost design strategy consists of: 5708€ in cardboard and 1436€ for lighting.

As a consequence, the system of multiple shelves inclinations extends to the whole bookshop space in such a way that the items on sale, mainly books and reviews, can be seen by the customers from a visual angle which is particularly suitable for the consultation. On the other hand, these angles, instead of being positioned one after the other, discontinuously, will stretch over the shelves in a continuous

Domestic space very closely affects the user, and has been discussed extensively over the history of interior space. At present, new lifestyles, new families and more flexible professional routines, have favored the emergence of a unique user profile, complex and with clear ideas about their needs, which demand genuine domestic typologies. This is the case of the inhabitant of this both residential and work space: An industrial designer, active art director and very involved in the world of fashion, advertising and performing arts in general. Our user raised the idea of devoting a warehouse to hold a recording studio, design space, meeting room, room for auditions, castings and fashion shows, and finally, a home. Therefore, the project acquired exceptional guidelines. We were forced to manage contact between extraordinarily collective-use spaces (Think of the people involved in a shoot) and others with a private and personal use. Hence the spirit of all design decisions, giving shape and structure to a domestic space that seeks, at all times, to be understood also as a space to share. In this sense, the socially outgoing and energetic personality of the user is reflected in the project. His friends and contacts are very important to him so their presence and the needs they present also become part of the briefing, the space becomes a kind of inhabited scenery where public and private, interact with

few apparent limits. If we divide the operation into two main levels, there are: FIRST FLOOR: On the entrance level there is a large space for a recording studio. On the same floor is a work and meeting area that sits below the loft housing. -SECOND FLOOR: In this mezzanine, the casting and catwalk area are combined with a large livable space in which domestic programs hybridize with common spaces. In this area, kitchen, bathroom and storage uses, are packed into a large container with large sliding doors. Moreover, the central space is occupied by a group of island-sofas, serving the larger piece to conceal the bed, designed as a drawer. As a link between the two levels, we employed a large structure made of steel that serves as support for the user´s collection of pop and kitch objects. At the same time, this structure will absorb the loads of the window which separates the public space from private space. The original building, a taxi garage, offers a powerful industrial spirit, which serves as a reference for the project. So we have a space in which the functionality leads to low budget building systems and eloquent dramatic interior design_94 effects.

MORITZ

M-Store Souvenir M-STORE MORITZ Type of project: store design Project: M-Store Location: Barcelona, Spain Status: Built Client: Moritz External Reference Project team: Nacho Toribio, Carmelo Zappulla

Mortiz, a beer sold worldwide, is taking place in a building refurbished by Jean Nouvel. Our assignment: to create an eye-catching M-Store design which changes every six months as well as a display window for state the trade of Moritz. The concept design arose in collaboration with the Master of interior design, IED Barcelona. The souvenirs shown on pilled rhombuses, in order to lead the visitor through the varied weighted topography-showcase, are the recognition value for the corresponding cities. A map affixed to the wall showcases all certain spots whereabouts Moritz is active all over the world. Therefore, a fibre connects the relevant well-known souvenir with the appropriated locality on the map to make the volume of trade of Moritz beer accessible to the customer. For the window a huge “M” is made out of the three different coloured best-known Moritz beer bottles. Beyond that the translucent of the bottle affords the sun to shine trough and allows the passing visitors to catch a glimpse of the Moritz beer world.

EVENT design

Barcelona Shopping Night BARCELONA SHOPPING NIGHT Type of project: Event design Project: Barcelona Shopping Night Location: Barcelona, Spain Status: Build Handing over date of project: 2013 Project team: Nacho Toribio, Carmelo Zappulla

For this year’s theme “Viva Verdi! Es lebe Wagner!” of the Barcelona shopping night we brought characters and atmospheres of the operas from Verdi in the street Passeig de Gracia to life. Based on Verdi’s Operas there had been seven figures chosen to be made as giant masks: Alfredo, Duca, Violetta, Toreros, Trovador, Rigoletto, Gitanillas. Notched laser-cuted foil builds the massive mask fixed on a wire construction which may be carried around by person and so turn into a moving scenography. Another character, Wotan a Scandinavian God, of the opera Valqueria by Wagner had been projected on the building Palau Robert. As valorisation of the VIP area a golden Valhalla tree underlined through light became part of the scene.
