Over the past 5 years, health professionals, architects, planners, and landscape architects have worked together with several NYC agencies and individuals such as the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department of Planning, the Department of Design and Construction, and the Mayor to establish a fit city by promoting physical activity through the design of public buildings. These buildings serve as a step forward to promoting wellness and a step forward to the prevention of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. In an effort to increase health awareness, the Hudson Natatorium will be the first of several fitness centers in each of the 5 boroughs to be planned and designed.


facility design Over the past decade, the rate of overweightness and obesity have risen drastically, drastically to the point where more than half the population is either obese or overweight. By designing a facility that allows New Yorkers to experience various different sports and activities under one shell, one can only speculate that the general public will be attracted since individuals can experience a wide range of activities in one facility instead of travelling to not only different points in the island of Manhattan, but different points in the other boroughs as well. The design consists of a clash of various different programs to which individuals will have to access through various ramps and stairs. The main goal of the design is to provide the general public with a wide range of physical activities while breaking a sweat in the process; hence, the program will ultimately expand the circulation.

Make them sweat! High Interval Training

High Interval Training

It started with the idea that circulation would be maximized in order to promote health and wellness. In the first concept, the idea was that the different programs were broken down and that many more were added and represented as single cells. The circulation would be along the walls, and at moments there would be connections between programs via ramp. The different gym cells protrude out of the exterior walls half way, allowing users to receive natural light, and be able to view both exterior views and the pool. Cells can be rotated 7 degrees, as it represents the amount of degrees North is skewed, and cells can be color coordinated to represent different programs and difficulty levels.

Spinning

High interval training requires the use of any form of gym equipment and adjusting its speed and incline manually. It allows the body to lose more body fat and achieve more than low intensity workouts.

Power Strength Training Power training is an advanced form of weight training for atheletes in several different sports that uses 4 different types of training: explosive strength training, ballistics, and heavy strength lifting.

Yoga & Stretch

Requires the use of a spin bike; instructors guide participants through different workout phases: warm up, steady uptempo cadences, sprints, climbs, cool-downs, etc. The environment usually contains up-tempo music.

High interval strength training requires individuals to not only keep increasing the amount of weight used, but also the number of repetitions, and the amount of time muscles are in tension. It requires less time in the gym and it has a low risk of injury.

Plyometrics Plyometrocs are exercises where the muscle is loaded and contracted in the same sequence. Most notably for athletes, plyometrics allows users to develop power in any part of the body using the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscle.

The beginning concept dealt with cells of programs leading into the expansion of circulation. From the start, circulation ran along the walls, but slowly, in later models, circulation would make connections based on program, and the design would be based on those relationships.


The final design came off the idea of a honeycomb; programs would be jumbled and meshed together, and circulation would be based at the center above the pool, however, connections from one side to the other would be based on the relationship between programs. At the exterior, cells of program protrude more than others to create shade off of overhangs, and also, the colors were kept in order for individuals to distinguish the different types of program: cardio, martial arts, weight training, etc.

In order to promote health and wellness, the amount of program for physical activity was increased significantly, and various programs such as soccer, racquetball/handball, several forms of martial arts, cardio, etc were added. The ending result is a mesh of individual programs that shape the facility and give it its overall form and circulation. The colors of the program remain in the final design because each program is color coded so that individuals can spot where they want to go in the facility. Color on the other hand also gives the building its character, as it stands out in this highly industrial area.

overhang system -the overhangs ensure that the module below it receives adequate shading. In this case, one of the thermal rooms is receiving shade from the overhang of one of the cardio rooms.




overhang system -along with the windows being recessed, the overhangs ensure that the modules below receive adequate shading. The diagram above shows how the system creates shade for not only modules below it, but the open spaces as well.

recessed windows -most of the windows located on the southern and western facades are recessed to allow a slight amount of shade throughout the day.(as shown on sun diagrams) -only windows located on the east side are flushed with the surface.
