PARTS STORE New Holley Dominator In-Line Billet Fuel Pump

Eibach Springs MULTI-PRO R1 Coil-overs for 2011 Mustang Eibach has developed its Multi Pro R1 coil-overs for the 2011 Ford Mustang. The specially-tuned spring/damper units will allow you to use every last ounce of cornering power in your car. The coil-over design lets you tune the corner weights to provide optimum handling balance, plus the wide range of damping adjustability lets you tune for comfort to ultimate grip, as well as anything in between. The kit features double adjustable rebound and compression damping with remote reservoirs, and a monotube design for maximum performance. For more information please go to www.eibach.com

Holley’s new Dominator in-line billet fuel pumps feature a twin-pump design which allows you to use one pump when you’re just cruising and both pumps when the nitrous switch is activated or the boost starts to build. Staging the second pump eliminates the unnecessary recirculating and heating of extra fuel which can possibly lead to poor performance and hot fuel issues. For racing vehicles, both pumps can be wired for full-time use to allow for maximum performance. For more information please go to www.holley.com

Kool coat, Langley, bc treatment. Nothing leaves the shop unless it’s in perfect condition. Kool Coat’s specialty is thermal barrier ceramic coatings. These ceramic coatings derive from the science behind the tiles on the space shuttle, engineered to dissipate the massive amounts of heat they’re subject to upon reentry into the atmosphere. Kool Coat uses a water-born version of the secret material, which bakes to metal parts and after final finishing, gives each part a chrome-like finish that will not rust. Of course, if chrome isn’t your thing, black, titanium, white and grey are also available. As it is technically a painting process with several complex prepping and finishing tasks, and defects are most commonly found as contamination. Kool Coat takes pride that no matter how small the defect, the process will be painstakingly reproduced until the part is perfectly coated before being returned to the customer. They say that heat is energy, and in order to store as much energy as possible, you need to harness that heat. In the automotive world, nothing is closer from the truth, as your engine is nothing more than a large air pump that produces a massive amount of heat. If one can harness and control the distribution of that heat, then you are able to get the absolute best efficiency out of your engine and have yourself a massive advantage over the other guy. Enter Kool Coat of Langley, BC. In business for nine years, Kool Coat has been offering an often overlooked service that can greatly enhance not only your car’s drivetrain, but many other vehicle components and mechanical devices as well. Back in February, the company was taken over by Patrick and Doug, and since then, the two have been improving the company, holding true to top quality production while improving customer service. Doug, a veteran chassis guy and Patrick coming from the aircraft field, have both men put a professional attitude towards the business of controlling heat. What sets Kool Coat apart is the quality control and attention to detail put into every part that comes through the doors for

Patrick comments, that only 12 percent of the applications for the coating have been discovered so far, and while most of the company’s business comes in the form of engine components, the process is equally effective on intake manifolds to control the heat soak of air entering the engine, or even the tops of pistons in nitro cars. The use for this application far exceeds its current uses, and anything that requires thermal control, from radiators to fuel lines, lends itself well to this procedure. However, Kool Coat doesn’t just do thermal coatings. There are several other forms of the ceramic coatings that also disperse heat, shed oil and reduce friction. The wear-resistant coatings fill the pores in the metal allowing for a slippery surface, which Patrick explains, can increase the efficiency of an engine by 15 horsepower, even 54 horsepower in extreme cases, when all moving parts are coated. Better yet, it is so durable that the metal that it is coating will fail before it does. So, when you want to go the extra mile to get the absolute maximum performance and efficiency out of your drivetrain and other mechanical devices, ceramics is an engine builder’s not-so-secret tool. If you want the best coaters to give your job the professional touch, check out Kool Coat’s website at www.koolcoatceramiccoatings. com for ideas for different applications and to get an idea of the type of work they can provide for you. Then schedule an appointment by calling 604-888-8688, or see them in person at #10 - 19695 - 96th Ave, Langley, BC.

Marathon Build

Story and Photos by Cam Hutchins

I

t took Gus Woods a little over 40 years to complete his ’31 Olds

Back in the day, Chevys were the low-priced models, and the price steadily went up through the Pontiacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles and finally Cadillac. This 1931 Oldsmobile five-window business coupe with five wire wheels cost $1,000, double the price of a Ford or Chevy. It’s rare as well, as only ninety nine were produced in the Oshawa plant, with this example coming in at the middle of the pack, being the 45th one built. Originally, this beauty sold at the Boyd Brothers dealership in Saskatoon. Gus Woods also bought it in Saskatoon, but in 1968 it was only $225. In his mid-twenties, Gus Woods was driving a 1965 Pontiac Parisienne at the time he heard of two cool cars for sale by the son of his family doctor. The choice was between a 1933 Ford five-window coupe and the 1931 Oldsmobile five-window coupe. The Olds was a running car, so a deal was made and he drove it away, fully intending to restore it. Family commitments put the Olds project on hold. Having only 36,901 miles on her, it was only sort of running, and because of the amount of work it needed, it was put into storage just outside of Saskatoon. Usually, this is a death 26 Performance Plus NOV/DEC 2011

sentence for old cars, but Gus and his son Jeff drove out from Surrey to get the car in the early ‘90s. Even the simple task of gathering parts seemed to be very difficult before the internet, and even when the car first arrived in Surrey, the full restoration of the Olds was the plan. During this time, the plan switched from a full restoration to a Hot Rod, and Gus says he has never questioned the decision to modify the car. But again, the work had to wait until retirement in 2005 allowed Gus to really work on the Olds. And work he and his son Jeff did. Spending 3,000 to 4,000 hours on the car in his one-car backyard garage, he did not stop until he finished it off in September 2008, after owning her for 40 years. The restoration-hot rodding of a 1931 Olds presents some special challenges, since no aftermarket parts are available. Using the internet to find parts, he sold some parts that were from his car that were more suited to a stock restoration, and he found some parts that worked well for his project. He found a gentleman in California working on a four-door model and Woods was able to sell him his stock running gear. Work on the car started with completely dismantling it, and the frame was stripped, ground clean by Woods and completely boxed by Doug MacLanders. Other frame modifications include removing all holes, extra rivets and bolts as well as incorporating FREE CLASSIFIED & EVENT LISTINGS HOTLINE: 1-888-500-4591

of primer, three coats of Royal Sapphire Blue Pearl Metallic and two coats of clear coat. All the brightwork was repaired and re-chromed, and stainless steel bolts and screws were used throughout the reassembly. New running boards were made out of pyramid point rubber matting, and new window rubber and channels by Steele Rubber were used in installing new proper safety glass windows. The new centre roof insert is by LeBaron Bonney/Hampton Coach, using an all-new roof structure of white oak. And, a new floor from firewall to trunk was made using 3/4-inch Vermont Oak.

a ‘34 Ford front crossmember widened 1-1/2 inches and a TCI Front I Beam axle dropped four inches. New Posie front springs with Pete & Jake shocks, new disc brakes, new steering box and a Flaming River four-bar set up adds hot rod looks with performance to match. Rear springs are ‘35-’48 Ford units, shorter than the original springs and lowered an additional two inches.

For motivation, Woods started with a rebuilt Chevy 350, adding an Edelbrock intake manifold, air cleaner, valve covers and valve cover breathers, a Carter fourbarrel carburetor with Lokar linkage, and a new milled aluminum high-performance high-voltage distributor. Other bits include new chrome 100-amp alternator, fuel pump, water pump, and ceramic headers with dual exhaust and super turbo mufflers. The engine is kept cool with a custom radiator and 3,630 CFM electric fan. The transmission is a TH 350 and the rear end is a ‘75 Maverick unit running 2.79 gears.

The body was completely chemically cleaned, disassembled and all body work was completed. After media blasting, it was painted with an epoxy primer and reassembled as a test fit. It was then disassembled and the underside of the car and fenders were painted. After final assembly, the Olds was painted with two coats

A complete new Ron Francis electrical system was installed. Six new Autometer gauges with a marine stereo CD system with wired remote complete the dash, but the interior light and mirror are originals. All of the interior panels were cut from ABS sheets and then covered by Russ Jenvey of RJ Upholstery. The interior is

sapphire blue and brilliant white ultra leather with a dark sapphire carpet. A Banjo steering wheel and steering column by Lime Works, So Cal signal light switch, brake and throttle pedals, high-beam pads, transmission shifter and emergency brake by Lokar complete the interior. To complete the exterior, there are new tail lights, halogen head lights, and door and trunk locks, and the headlight reflectors have been resilvered, but the original gas cap and original rare Dove hood ornament were used. Steel wheels by Wheels Vintique (front 15 x 6 with 3-3/4 offset, rear 15 x 7 with 3-1/4 reverse offset) give the Olds a nostalgic hot rod look, and it rides on BF Goodrich Silvertown Coker tires, 215/75-15 front and 235/75-15 rear wide whites. For functionality, the battery was relocated into the trunk, and functionality is needed because this car is going to be driven a lot. It won top prize for its class at the Oldsmobile Show and last year was invited to attend the Steamworks Concours d’Elegance in Gastown in Vancouver. Not one to sit around after completing such a stunning car, Woods looked around for another project to use his newly honed skills. One of the curses of hot rodding a car is that at the end of the build, you always have so many parts left over you could almost build another car....albeit probably stock. Gift Idea’s For the Gearhead Picking gifts for Gearheads is a tough challenge; let us help you out Story by Budd Stanley

C

hristmas is right around the corner, and we’re sure that you might be having trouble trying to decipher the enigma that is the Gearhead. Well, hopefully we can help, and hopefully he has strategically left this magazine out in the open, and just happened to leave it open to this page for your ease. Ideally, every Gearhead wants parts or tools for Christmas; however, these are highly specialized items, and unless you know the actual part number of the certain piece your Gearhead is looking for, I’d stay away from that strategy. However, there are a great many things that not only make a Gearhead’s life easier, but also make great gift ideas. Here is our list of safe gifts that a Gearhead will not only appreciate, but which will also be useful.

Tuning App – Dynolicious www.dynolicious.com Gearheads always want to know what’s going on with their car. Better yet, they want to see what improvements have been gained with all that hard work they just put into making their car faster. Is it really faster, or was it all wasted time and money? Well, our most affordable gift is an app that turns your Gearhead’s iPhone or iPad into a dyno-machine. Dynolicious uses the hardware built-in to your iPhone to measure the performance characteristics of your vehicle. No external wires or equipment is necessary; simply slip the iPhone into a cradle or cupholder and go! Retail prices start at $12.99.

Garage Lift – Lift King – www.liftking.ca It might be a tool, but it’s something that the majority of us Gearheads wish we had. Crawling around under a car on the cold concrete floor starts to lose its charm when the leaves start to fall, and if there was one thing the home mechanic Glow in the Dark Tire Gauge – Longacre wished they had, it’s their own shop lift. Lift King is a supplier www.summitracing.com of heavy-duty lifts that can handle anything from a scooter to a Flat tires and punctures never ocfull-size heavy-duty truck. Whether it’s a four-post, two-post or cur at opportune times, such as a fully mobile lift, not only will this make you a Gearhead’s best the middle of the day on a sunny friend, it will also provide an extra parking space in the garage summer day. A tire gauge is the first tool on an incar tool kit list, and Longacre has one that will make life a little easier during these times. Its glowin-the-dark tire pressure gauges have an easy-to-read, two-inch glow-in-the-dark dial face. They feature an internal gauge damper to provide more accurate readings and longer life, and include an ultra-flexible 14-inch hose. Retail priced at $26.80 USD. Corky’s Used Autoparts It seems as though the price of parts just keeps climbing higher and higher these days. As cars become more and more complicated with the added complexities of today’s technological gizmos and do-dads, it seems as though it would be easier to just dispose of a modern car rather than try to fix them. It is for this reason that these modern cars are being known as “toss aways.” However, it’s refreshing to know that for the majority of us gearheads, who enjoy working on older cars, there are still a good network of quality wreckers out there that have their shelves stacked with the parts we need need. When Wayne started working, he began in dealerships and mechanic shops, then in 1990, he took over a warehouse recycler on the corner of Kingsway and Broadway in Port Coquitlam and has built it up to what it is today. FEATURE - MY ROUTE 66

My Route 66 By Paul Kennedy

Bear with me here. It’s the summer of 1966, so after completing my first year at the brand new and unfinished Simon Fraser University, I’m working at 999 Queen St West in Toronto. It’s a mental hospital (no comments from the peanut gallery), I’m working on the Receiving Ward, and I have keys! Being a car nut, I figured I should make my way down to Niagara Falls, New York for an NHRA race scheduled for that summer. I borrowed a nylon sleeping bag, which was about 18 inches long and maybe half that in diameter, took my camera and not much else in a small gym bag. Since I was planning on sleeping overnight at the race track, I figured I better not take too much ID in case I got mugged. So off I go on the bus from Toronto, arriving at the border around 3:00pm on Friday. An American border guard got on the bus, making his way steadily back to me. When he asked where I was from I said Vancouver, then he asked for ID. Oops. I told him why I’d left most of it in Toronto, but he was not sympathetic and escorted me off the bus. We went inside his office and he wrote me out a sheet titled Refusal Of Entry to the USA. I was crushed, so I walked

FEATURE - MY ROUTE 66 back across the International Bridge to Canada. I explained my predicament to a very nice Canadian Customs agent, his reply was a classic of understatement. He said to go back across at 4:10 pm. I asked why and he explained that the American border guards changed shifts at 4:00, so if I walked back across after then, I would encounter new guards. So I noodled around the Canadian Falls for an hour, took pictures for some tourists, then ambled back across the International Bridge. There was a separate agent for sidewalk traffic, so I approached him with my little bag of camping gear. He asked the usual questions, then looked at the bag and asked what was in it. When I told him it contained a sleeping bag and a camera he was surprised, and asked to see the sleeping bag. Now convinced I really was going to the drag races, he let me through! Great, across, but with no bus. I started to hitchhike, and soon got a ride out to the track with a guy in a four-speed 1965 Goat. I spent Saturday wandering the pits and watching qualifying, then found a spot that night to camp near the fence. The only night danger was the close approach of a drunk trying to relieve himself, fortunately not on me. Sunday finally dawned, and it was a gorgeous day for the racing. However, the track and racing weren’t what I remember all these years later. It was an exhibition car, a 1966 Chevy II called Triple Trouble. Why the name? It had three engines, one up front and two behind the driver. It smoked the slicks for the entire quarter mile. He did several exhibition passes, all smoke, all the time. I left for Toronto at 5:00 on Sunday, the reverse border crossing was much less traumatic, and I got home by midnight. I have never gone on another trip without ID!

Hazardous Materials in Classic Cars By Brian Turner

C

lassic cars contain quite a bit of hazardous material, ranging from insulation on wires and exhaust to the leadbased paints used to coat them. These types of materials, as well as the ways in which they were employed, would not be acceptable by today’s standards. One of the biggest reasons for this is that much was not known about the potential of exposure to certain materials in automobile parts, such as asbestos fibres, like brake pads, hood liners, clutch plates, etc. These have now have been linked to mesothelioma and other serious health conditions. Taking care around these materials requires a combination of knowledge and preventative steps that, when undertaken in turn, prevent the most common types of hazardous materials exposure while working with classic cars. Even the oil and gasoline used in the heydays of the classic cars and muscle cars could be regarded as hazardous, as they both contained and put out toxins including carbon monoxide and lead vapours. Prolonged exposure to the fumes, such as when working on gas tanks, carburetors and fuel lines, risks coming into

contact with even more toxins than are in today’s fuels. Paint is another aspect to consider, as the old metal frames and steel bodies had layers of paints, primers and rust-inhibitors that contained lead and other metals for colour and durability, that are now known to cause a host of health and environmental problems. Great care should be taken when removing old paint, both in terms of respiratory protection and disposal, as the particles can travel quite well throughout the air and remain toxic on the ground for many decades. Some of the biggest dangers associated with classic cars are due to the materials found within the electrical system and its supporting components. Not only was asbestos a preferred material for insulating wires and heating components, but the batteries supplying starting power were toxic and volatile in their own respects. Lead-acid battery systems are still quite prevalent, just much more safe and much more durable, reducing the burn and explosion risks significantly. Working on and restoring classic cars is a passion that has spread to young and older people all across the country and the world, and while a very rewarding experience, it needs to be tempered with respect and understanding. Nothing could be more tragic than ruining a classic vehicle or damaging one’s health as a result of unknowingly releasing or activating dangerous materials, particularly when the information and advice to prevent it is so readily available. Many unsuspecting components in an older vehicle can contain nasty surprises for the environment, people and the car, making it imperative to know what you are working with and how to do it safely.
