2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Debuts

Recently, GMC pulled the wraps off the latest fruit of its labour with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV): the 2024 GMC Canyon AEV. Like its Sierra bigger sibling, the transition to AEV spec has given the Canyon AT4X larger tires – in this case, a set of 35-inch Goodyear Territory MTs, with a bed-mounted spare, all wrapped around beadlock-capable Salta wheels – a 4.5-inch factory lift, added underbody protection courtesy of boron plates under the rad, transmission transfer case, rear diff and fuel tank, and stamped heavy-duty front and rear bumpers. That’s the nitty gritty; on the surface, we find larger fender flares and wider front and rear tracks as well as specialized AEV branding on the bumpers, floor liners and head restraints. It should come as no surprise that this particular Canyon is no “look-at me” joke, but a proper off-roader with better approach, departure and breakover angles to the tune of 38.2 degrees, 26 degrees and 26.9 degrees, respectively. In addition to looking the part, the front bumper has also been given recovery points for winch mounting, and the rear bumper gets corners that can be easily removed for better off-road progress. Like the rest of the Canyon line-up, the AEV gets a single engine choice: a 2.7-litre turbo four-cylinder making 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, fed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It will be available only as a crew cab with five-foot box. Like the standard AT4X, meanwhile, the AEV also gets a Baja drive mode for faster off-road work as well as a launch control feature that encourages drivers to make use of brake stands as opposed to the opposite. The launch control feature will even read the road surface and adjust accordingly. Seems like a truckload of fun – but we’ll have to wait until late summer to find out for sure, as that’s when production is scheduled to begin at GM assembly in Wentzville, MO.

Improving Efficiencies Allow Ford to Lower F-150 Lightning Prices

Ford is taking advantage of its ever-increasing plant capacity, continued work on scaling production and cost, plus improving battery raw material costs to help lower the MSRP of F-150 Lighting EV pickups for all customers. The Rouge Electric Vehicle Centre in Michigan is closed at the moment in order to complete final plant upgrades that will triple the plant’s annual run rate to a targeted 150,000 F-150 Lighting pickups beginning later this fall. Ford says customers will now have greater availability of their built-to-order truck as early as October at a price closer to the initial Lightning pricing. “Shortly after launching the F-150 Lightning, rapidly rising material costs, supply constraints and other factors drove up the cost of the EV truck for Ford and our customers,” said Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer, Ford Model e. “We’ve continued to work in the background to improve accessibility and affordability to help to lower prices for our customers and shorten the wait times for their new F-150 Lightning.” Ford projects a minimum $6,000 price decrease for the top-of-the-line models with the entry-level models seeing drops as big as $15,000. This, along with the announcement that Ford will be adding access to Tesla superchargers starting early next year, means we could be looking at a big year for the F-150 Lightning.

Toyota Unveils Annual TRD Pro Colour for 2024 Model Year

In what’s become an annual tradition since 2015, Toyota has unveiled the exclusive colour for its TRD Pro vehicles of the 2024 model year – Terra. Back in 1973, Shoichiro Toyoda,

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2023 6
who went on to serve as Chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation from 1992 to 1999, established the first major automotive design studio by a Japanese automaker in North America called Calty Design Research. Calty has remained at the forefront of Toyota’s de-

sign revolution and each year takes on the challenge of developing the new colour. “When we decide on a colour, there is a whole team involved. We work with the planning group, marketing, engineers, manufacturing…it really takes a whole team,” says Sellene Lee, CMF senior lead designer at Calty’s Newport Beach location. “It’s a fun challenge to find that sweet spot where everyone’s vision lines up.” The TRD Pro is available on Tundra, Sequoia, 4Runner and Tacoma. Toyota says the exclusive colour serves as a badge of honour and symbolizes the vehicle’s exceptional off-road capabilities and spirit of adventure.

GMC Announces Driving Range for Upcoming 2024 Hummer EV 3X Pickup

GMC has recently announced the driving range for the upcoming 2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X pickup, an impressive GMC-estimated 613 km on the 3X trim and up to 577 km for models that are equipped with the Extreme Off-Road Package. “For extended road trips, overlanding in remote areas or daily driving, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup will take you where you need to go, now with more driving range and confidence,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer, GMC Hummer EV. “As we expand the limits on our all-electric future, we’re excited to continue improving the range and take the GMC Hummer EV farther than ever for our customers and their adventures.” Standard features on the 3X pickup trim include 22-in. wheels and 35-in. all-terrain tires, 4-wheel steer with CrabWalk diagonal drive capability, an air ride adaptive suspension, extract mode and Super Cruise hands-free driving assistance capability. The Extreme Off-Road Package on the 3X trim adds 18-in. wheels with 35-in. mud-terrain tires, front e-locker and Rear Virtual locking differentials, heavy-duty ball-spline half-shafts and underbody protection that keeps it protected even in challenging off-road driving situations.

Jeep Debuts Two New, Summery Exterior Colours to Wrangler and Gladiator

Jeep has announced two new exterior colours for the Wrangler and Gladiator respectively. The Bikini exterior paint colour is now available for order on the 2024 Jeep Wrangler and is best described as a radiant teal colour. The 2023 Gladiator sees the re-addition of the Punk’n brilliant orange colour that was originally available when the Gladiator was released back in 2020 and is now back by popular demand. “Adding the Bikini and Punk’n exterior paint colours this summer is a great time to relaunch these confident and custom colours,” said Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “Like other special-run colours for Wrangler and Gladiator, Bikini and Punk’n appeal to a huge enthusiast following because they’re authentic and adventurous, just like the Jeep community.” Both colours are now available for orders but will only be available for a limited time with production set to begin in September.

Ford Donates Bronco Wildland Firefighting Command Rig to National Park Service

In what has already been a particularly bad year for wildfires across Canada and the USA, Ford and the Bronco Wild Fund are donating a Bronco Badlands SUV with Sasquatch off-road package to the National Park Service for use in Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. “For more than a century, Ford has supported fire response and disaster relief efforts by deploying vehicles to provide emergency transportation and power and deliver essential goods,” said Dave Rivers, Ford Enthusiast Brand Manager. “Bronco Wild Fund was created because of our passion for the outdoors, and we’re excited to donate the Bronco wildland firefighting command rig to Bandelier to help protect this National Monument for generations to come.” This Bronco is the first of two that are being developed by Darley, which is a global manufacturer and distributor for defence, fire and rescue vehicles, to be donated to the National Park Services. The firefighting Bronco rig is equipped with a state-of-the-art government communication system and includes both satellite and antenna connections. This technology allows firefighters to establish a real-time backcountry command and control position with the crews during emergency operations. Other specialized hardware includes a drone with live feed screens to the vehicle, a factory-installed Warn winch plus search and emergency lights and siren.

Very High-Output

The Ford Super Duty series of pickups – more specifically, the F-250, F-350 and F-450 – have been redesigned for 2023, with the main addition being that of a high-output Powerstroke diesel V8 making 500 horsepower and – wait for it – 1,200 no-that’s-no-typo pound-feet of torque, making it capable of towing up to a whopping 40,000 pounds (about 18,000 kg) depending on spec. That’s about 11 Toyota Priuses. Or the Titanic.

Style-wise, there’s very little doubt when staring at one head-on that this is something special. There are a number of grille styles ranging from the base blacked-out plastic of an XL work truck to a chrome treatment with a spiralling bar between the stacked headlamps that looks more than a little like the famous “snake” logo of the King Ranch trim – cool, but perhaps a little too on-the-nose for some. The King Ranch, meanwhile, joins the XL, XLT, Lariat, Limited and Platinum trims for 2023. There are no new trims, but the XL truck gets an off-road package that sits just below

the well-known FX4 package and provides beefier 33-inch Bridgestone Dueller off-road tires, a higher ride height and higher front splitter for better approach and departure angles. It doesn’t look like much from the exterior, does the XL, but add the high-output diesel motor and you have quite the raucous truck on your hands that also makes for a great fleet vehicle for forestry services and the like.

All the trucks, meanwhile, get the famed “Super Duty” stamping across the leading edge of the hood. All three Super Duty models are available with Regular, Super or Crew cabs and each truck can be had in 4x4 or 4x2, depending on trim.

How the Super Duty feels inside depends fully on which trim you’ve selected. In base XL trim, the vinyl seats and steering wheel cover plus 8-inch infotainment display and front bench seat leave little to the imagination; this is a truck that’s meant to work, and meant to be easy to clean and maintain while doing so.

Things change with a step-up two levels into Lariat spec, which adds optional contrast-colour piping, cooled seats, new 12-inch infotainment display, digital gauge cluster and even some faux woodgrain inserts. It’s a nice place to sit and the quality of the materials used, and fit and finish, are right on. Ram has had the top spot when it comes to a pickup’s interior accoutrements for quite some time now, but this latest Super Duty has been given such a comprehensive once-over that, short of the Ram’s vertical dual-pane infotainment screen, choosing a winner between the two has become tougher.

That’s just in Lariat form; upgrading to Limited or – my favourite – King Ranch ratchets things up yet another degree. The brown leather seating, the chrome trim bits, the famous logo on the seats and head restraints, and the new for ’23 etching between the two gloveboxes all combine for some sumptuous, luxurious environs inside that would make a luxury cruiser blush. There’s also a flat rear load floor, three cab sizes, optional full-length sunroof and optional power sliding rear window. Other luxury

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2023 10
The all-new 2023 Ford Super Duty has up to 1,200 lb-ft. of torque!

features include optional Bang & Olufsen audio, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and heated and cooled rear seats.

No matter the trim, the seats are more comfortable and supportive than previous (and can fold flat for downtime scenarios) and the ergonomics – from the shape and level of the armrests to the placement of the cupholders – are spot on. The shifter is column-mounted no matter which truck you opt for, but only on more basic models do you get a flat work surface between the front seats.

The Super Duty’s interior adds for 2023 aren’t just about the supple, however, for there are a number of tech adds that make living, towing and hauling with the truck that much easier. New for 2023 is trailer hitch assist, which adds a hitch view to your back-up camera to more easily line up your trailer hitch and then once moving, the central display can become a blind-spot camera that includes the length of your trailer and activates as soon as you flip the indicator. That joins Pro Trailer Backup Assist (PTBA) which allows the truck to steer for you as you back up, making trailering easier for novices and the experienced alike.

We’ve seen PTBA before, but what we haven’t seen is the new truck’s tongue scale system that shows you how balanced your trailer’s load is and how much capacity you have before you reach the limit. That’s displayed on the infotainment screen -- but it doesn’t stop there. Say you’re trying to load a skid loader onto a trailer, but you’re not sure how best to place it on the trailering surface. To help with this, the taillights feature a bank of four lights that flash if the weight isn’t perfectly centred. Skid loader too far back? The lower bulb flashes. Too far forward? The upper bulb flashes. It’s smart, and it also works to help you balance your payload, too. An optional Pro Power Onboard generator system is also here, and the 2.0 kW it generates is enough to power any number of tools at the jobsite or gear at the campsite.

Speaking of hauling: you can haul up to 3,628 kg (8,000 lbs.) – which is great. Greater, perhaps, is how you can extend your bed by keeping the tailgate open but not lose the use of your backup camera. That’s because Ford has installed a second camera atop the tailgate so that when it’s open, you can still use it. This helps you back up as close to your loading surface as possible, making it that much easier to deposit your load. Add the tailgate’s bed access step as well as additional steps on the bumper corners and just ahead of the rear wheels and there are few spots within the bed – which ranges in size from 6.75 to 8 feet – you won’t be able to reach.

11 AUG/SEPT 2023 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE

We started the day at the wheel of a gas-powered Lariat truck and while it doesn’t have anywhere near the torque of the diesel engines – both of which make over 1,000 lb-ft of the stuff – the 430 horsepower and 485 pound-feet of torque the 7.3-litre makes (there’s also a 6.8L version on the base XL model good for 405 hp and 445 lb-ft) is enough to tow over 8,845 kg (over 19,000 pounds) depending on spec. The F-250 starts at 7,030 kg (15,500 lbs.) with a conventional hitch and single rear wheel, while the F-350 starts at 9,070 kg (20,000 lbs.). Upgrading to a gooseneck provides at least 6,759 kg (14,900 lbs.) for the F-250 and 9,933 kg (21,900 lbs) for the F-350, while the F-250 is good for at least 6,305 kg (13,900 lbs) with a fifth wheel and the F-350, 9,435 kg (20,800 lbs.).

For this portion, however, we were driving unladen through the highways and biways of central Michigan and while the crew cab short-box truck we were driving is no lightweight, the gas engine and 10-speed automatic

Depressing the gas pedal won’t return a sports car-like response – the engine does weigh in at about a tonne, after all – but the well of torque there gives the impression that acceleration just won’t ever stop. It will, but not before you’ve hit far-from-legal speeds anyway. There is very little in the passenger vehicle world that feels quite like a big-hearted diesel.

To really put the Super Duty’s locomotive chops to the test, we were given the chance to tow a number of trailers in a number of trucks; everything from a 37,000-lb horse trailer to a 40,000-lb flatbed loaded with weights was open for us to put through their paces on Ford’s Michigan proving grounds; we tackled 7-12 degree grades, roundabouts and narrow passages so we could test the mirrors, trailer blind spot system, brakes – both of the friction and mechanical variety -- and just the various trucks’ overall ability to do the bidding of what it feels like required a Class 8 rig 30 years ago. That, of course, is a bit of hyperbole but the bottom line is they acquitted themselves well – for the most part. You are never going to fully defeat physics and there was definite fore and aft bob as we made our way around the in the more heavily laden vehicles, but you know that for the loads in the 10-20,000-lb. range that these are going to be dispatched with little drama.

Take those mechanical capabilities and add all the features that make it easier to tow and haul, and you can see how this latest Super Duty is aiming to be more than the King of the range; it’s aiming to be the king of the pickup truck world and it definitely has the bonafides to make a real push in that vein. The high-output diesel is fantastic, the interior is laden with tech and comfort, and the overall capabilities are immense.

transmission worked well in concert to heave-ho us down the road licketysplit. It all happens with a wonderful growl from the V8 as well, helped along by the dual-exit tailpipe sprouting out just behind the right rear wheels. You could drop this motor in a smaller truck and I reckon it wouldn’t feel that much faster. Whether that’s a testament to the engine being too overpowered for a small truck or too underpowered for a large truck, I’m not sure (although it makes more than the 5.7L Hemi offered by Ram or the 6.6L V8 offered by GM on its Sierra and Silverado trucks), the bottom line is it’s not like I longed for the diesel engine as I drove along.

Until, of course, I stepped into a diesel truck – same body spec, but in Limited trim as opposed to Lariat – and felt just how massive 1,200 poundfeet can be. That’s “massive” both in terms of performance and price, as it costs over $13,000 to get the big motor in Canada, meaning you can’t get the most powerful Super Duty for less than 70 grand – and that’s for a base XL model. Opting for the less-powerful option, meanwhile, will save a couple of grand.

There are of course always going to be those loyal to one truck brand or another, but you know that for the agnostic buyer looking to get into the heavy-duty pickup game, the ’23 Super Duty is going to draw its fair share of attention.

Hawaii was the setting for the first look at the newest generation of the Toyota Tacoma. Perhaps because Tacoma has been the best-selling truck in Hawaii forever, we headed to the Big Island in the Pacific to show off one of Toyota’s most successful nameplates ever.

Either way – they did not disappoint. It’s been eight years since we had a new Tacoma and this time around, there was a tremendous amount of speculation on what the engineering team would give us. What we did know beforehand was that this Tacoma would have an all-new frame – that opened up the possibilities including fixing the controversial driver’s seating position (spoiler – they did). Also, it was rumoured that the V6 engine would be discontinued (it is) and that the six-speed manual transmission option would also go away (it didn’t).

So, as a first look – it was just that, we did not drive, we just got to crawl around the new truck. Here are the highlights of what we saw:

• The new standard i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine produces up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.

• An Available i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain produces 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack.

• Still available - a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT2) with automatic rev matching and anti-stall technology. Manual transmission models produce 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

• All-new Trailhunter is a factory-developed overlanding rig built from the ground up with the latest integrated off-road equipment from ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID.

• Baja-inspired TRD Pro debuts segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seat for enhanced off-road driving control and comfort.

• Available 14-inch touchscreen displays latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system.

• Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard on all models.

• Designed, engineered, and assembled for North America.

For its fourth generation, Tacoma is built on a new TNGA-F global truck platform (it also underpins Tundra and Sequoia). This new Tacoma utilizes a new high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame which adds numerous features like fully redesigned multi-link coil rear suspension that improves ride and handling. However, leaf springs remain standard on SRS XtraCab grade. A new front crossmember was constructed for the steering gear box, which adds rigidity while enhancing steering input.

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2023 1

A new high-lift jack point is also integrated into the rear frame end. This feature is on every version of Tacoma. Tacoma also now gets four-wheel disc brakes as well as having electric power steering. The TRD Pro comes fitted with FOX’s new OS3 three-way adjustable internal bypass shocks.

The look of the new truck takes its inspiration from a spirit of offroad adventure, says Toyota. It includes a high lift, big tires, slim body, and a powerful athletic stance that define the iconic Tacoma look, referred to as ‘Tacoma-ness’. Other signature design elements include the high-mount headlamps, side functional air intakes, hexagonal grille motif, as well as integrated roof and tailgate spoilers.

For the towing crowd – like us – there is also good news. Here are the new numbers and features:

• Maximum towing capacity for Tacoma is rated at 6,500 lb.

• Maximum payload increases to 1,709 lb.

• Supporting features including a trailer brake controller, trailer backup guide, and digital display mirror.

• Trailer Back Up Guidance aids in overall manoeuvring of trailers, while the available Straight Path Assist feature is designed to back up in a straight line.

• The available 360-degree cameras create a top-down view.

• Blind Spot Monitor is designed to recognize blind spots for not only the truck, but certain trailers as well.

• The aluminum tailgate features an available power open and close function with jam protection, and a quick release and close button is integrated within either taillight.

• Gas grades will offer an available 400W AC inverter outlet in the bed and on the rear of the centre console.

• i-FORCE MAX grades come standard with a 2,400W AC inverter. 12V DC power access is also available in both the bed and in the cabin.

Also new – and exciting (we were not expecting this at all) is a two-door Tacoma with a 6-foot bed. Called the XtraCab, it is all about maximum utility and comes exclusively with seating for two, a functional rear cabin storage area, and a 6-foot bed. This configuration has no rear doors and no rear seat but makes the most of its cabin with all kinds of additional storage options. It is coming to Canada, but it will be late next year – after it launches in the States.

Last of the surprises in Hawaii was a new model called Trailhunter. It’s an “overlanding” version of the TRD Pro. Very off-road capable, but differently focused. For instance, Trailhunter drivers can view potential obstacles that are looming on the trail via the Multi-Terrain Monitor that can display on the available 14-inch touchscreen. For the sketchiest of situations, Tacoma offers standard front and optional rear recovery hooks and underbody protection.

Toyota worked with renowned Australian-based ARB to co-develop Old Man Emu (OME) position-sensitive 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks with rear external piggyback-style remote reservoirs, a steel rear bumper, robust rear recovery points, and a bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels. ARB

engineering even worked on-site at Toyota alongside the project development team to co-develop Trailhunter, with 6-foot bed Double Cab configurations available. The OME shocks along with the 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires boost up Trailhunter an additional two inches in the front, and one-anda-half inches in the rear.

In Canada, Tacoma comes exclusively in four-wheel-drive models, which have an electronically-controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range along with Active Traction Control (A TRAC). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades. The new and luxurious Limited grade now features a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a centre locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models.

Tacoma will be offered in numerous grades and configurations for its new generation, and two cab styles with either a 5- or 6-foot bed: a four-door Double Cab and the new two-door XtraCab. The all-new 2024 Tacoma will go on sale later this year with i-FORCE MAX models arriving in early 2024.

Off-Road Capable

It’s no secret the best-selling F-150 is built to handle almost any job. But for those seeking something that can venture well beyond the worksite, and which doesn’t have a Raptor-level price tag, there’s the Tremor edition first introduced for the 2021 model year, now with an extra powertrain option.

“Like Super Duty Tremor and Ranger Tremor, the all-new F-150 Tremor is a direct response to seeing how customers use our trucks to enable their outdoor lifestyles,” says marketing manager Todd Eckert in a media release following the initial launch. “F-150 Tremor provides the additional off-road capability they’re looking for with our latest off-road technologies.”

To differentiate between the regular vehicle, this variant— based on the SuperCrew and 5.5-foot box combo — boasts a vented hood and unique squared off grille housing a menacing blacked-out Ford oval logo and signature Active Orange-coloured centre strip. A hardy Raptor-style silver bash plate is mounted under the front bumper revealing a couple of bright recovery hooks poking out either side, and also borrowed from the Baja-bred pickup are close-fitting fixed running boards designed to protect the body.

At the back, the bumper has two cut-outs to accommodate the dualtip high-flow exhaust system and another pair of hooks. Dark matte 18-inch wheels shod in 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires finish off the package. Side note: it’s nice to see the door handle lock buttons remain of the physical variety taking the guesswork out of operation, and allow gloves to stay on.

Upon approach the welcome lighting illuminates various exterior LEDs, and the side mirror puddle lights shine a cool graphic on the ground. The cabin features lots of Active Orange hits, like the con-

trast stitching found on the seats, centre console, dash and steering wheel. A six-position auxiliary power switch pack is mounted above, in case owners want to add-on winches, air compressors or other gadgets. Behind the unit in Trucks Plus’ loaner was a massive twinpanel moonroof (+ $1,750).

As with all F-150s, there’s generous interior storage. The cubbies under the second-row bench come in especially handy to stow valuables out of sight, though they could be a little deeper to fit backpacks or bigger bags.

The standard engine is Ford’s 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 (which we tested), producing a healthy twin-turbocharged 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Consumers preferring naturally-aspirated output can choose the newly-offered 5.0-litre V8 rated at 400 horsepower

and 410 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity of the former is 10,900 pounds.

The vehicle pulls great over virtually any surface thanks to four-wheel drive and a locking rear differential. Pre-selecting a dynamic drive mode according to surface conditions enhances performance — for example Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand and Mud/Rut adjust throttle response and shift points, among many other settings, to optimize the experience.

An upgraded suspension, comprised of revised front hub knuckles and upper control arms and purpose-tuned shocks, increase ground clearance by an inch-plus and grants comfort in cruising situations while dialing in more precision when traversing rough terrain. Together the result is an approach angle of 27.6 degrees, breakover angle of 21.2 degrees and a departure angle of 24.3 degrees.

A whole host of available off-road goodies may be bundled if plenty of adventures off the beaten path are anticipated. A 360-degree camera (+ $850) allows quick spotting of obstacles around the truck; one-pedal drive automatically engages the brakes as soon as the accelerator is released making rock crawling easier; and Trail Turn Assist brakes the inside rear wheel during low-speed manoeuvres so the steering radius is reduced in tight turning scenarios.

A True Stand Out

2023 Rivian R1S

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

Though electrified SUVs have been a thing for awhile now, there hasn’t been a true pure EV offering with an emphasis on the utility part of the acronym. That is until California-based automobile manufacturer and technology company Rivian started manufacturing the R1S this year, which is identical to its popular R1T truck sibling from the B-pillar forwards.

Amongst a sea of competitors, Rivian truly manages to stand out boasting unique oval LED headlamps connected to a horizontal light bar. The rounded elements of the nose contrast against the rest of the body’s rectangular shape. Thick protective cladding runs all around along the bottom of the vehicle, and at the rear there’s a complementary wrap-around taillamp bar. A pair of polished tow hooks integrated into the front bumper above the matching skidplate.

Some may have the opinion the lack of a bed causes the model to appear less rugged, but the boxy canopy actually looks pretty tough and as a bonus provides a lot of additional secure space to stash gear. Buyers can equip up to 23-inch wheels on specific trims — our QuadMotor loaner rode on black 20-inch five spoke wheels shod in chunky Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain rubber. It’s interesting to note driving range estimates change quite drastically depending on the specific rollers equipped. For example, moving up to 21-inch wheels and more efficient road tires yields a 20 per cent increase in total travel distance.

The minimalistic interior is a proper case study of how to combine leading tech with a sustainable, attractive aesthetic. The seats are comfortable and upholstered in easy-to-clean and visually interesting faux leather. The microfiber headliner overhead is made out of 100 per cent recycled materials and feels premium. Choosing the Adventure Package unlocks extra goodies like beautiful natural-grained ash wood dash trim and a Meridian stereo bundling a unique docking portable Bluetooth speaker to bring the party to a campsite or poolside.

Particularly for those who haven’t been in many EVs previously, operating the Rivian requires one to forget everything they know about a “normal” car. Virtually all functions are handled through the 15.6-inch central touchscreen. I sat puzzled in the driver’s seat before realizing

changing the side mirror position required first tapping on the user account menu button, and then using the steering wheel thumb control to perform the actual adjustment.

Occupants won’t be left wanting for comfort or storage features. The front seats can fold virtually flat to facilitate the catching of Zs when parked, and all three rows have sufficient legroom. Behind the back bench is almost 500 litres of space, along with 300-plus litres below the frunk and 140 in a clever under-cargo-floor compartment.

Even furry companions will enjoy the journey thanks to a Pet Comfort mode that maintains a comfortable temperature inside while the people

The accompanying 135-kilowatt-hour Large Pack battery is enough to allow the nearly 6,000-pound behemoth to travel over 500 kilometres on a full charge. Using a Rivian Level 2 48-amp charging station at home, expect a full top-up to take somewhere around 12 hours. Plugging into a high-output 350-kilowatt Level 3 public source should get the reserves from 10 to 80 per cent in the neighbourhood of 40 to 45 minutes.

Considering the gargantuan performance lurking beneath the bodywork, the vehicle behaves remarkably tamely until the go pedal is pressed to the floor. There are multiple dynamic modes altering throttle response, suspension height and dampening, drivetrain layout and more. have stepped away, and a special message pops up on the main display assuring onlookers all is well.

Currently, the R1S is offered in either Quad or Dual Motor AWD flavours and three different battery sizes (note the automaker has removed the grade-topping Max Pack option for the former powertrain, and whether it returns remains to be seen). As mentioned above, Trucks Plus was given the opportunity to try the Quad AWD outputting a mighty impressive 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque.

IT’S MORE THAN A TAILGATE. PROTECT IT.

The R1S and R1T share the same air suspension setup, however the pickup sits on a longer wheelbase and may be why the ride on the shorter SUV feels on the bouncier side. That said, the handling is sharper than expected given the large dimensions thanks to a slick hydraulic roll-control replacing a conventional mechanical anti-roll bar. And when you do utilize a heavy foot, hold on to your hats. Blistering is the only appropriate adjective to describe the acceleration feel. We didn’t do any hauling, but towing capacity is rated at 7,700 pounds.

The Dual-Motor is priced at MSRP $105,250 and the Quad-Motor $124,500, and both are available to order via Rivian.com.

Compelling Alternative

While the Ford F-150 Lightning EV may be here and stealing hearts across the land, it is not the be-all, end-all when it comes to alternatively-powered versions of the world’s bestselling passenger vehicle. One should ignore the F-150 Powerboost hybrid at their own peril, as there is lots to like here without the inflated price tag, range anxiety and reduced capability of the electric truck.

There’s very little to differentiate the Lariat Powerboost from a standard version; the badge on the doors is pretty much it, as Ford has left the real styling change to the Lightning. Otherwise, my tester’s Rapid Red Metallic Paint with contrasting black 20-inch wheels, front grille and wing mirrors is about as go-fast as any F-150 this side of a Raptor is going to look. It’s very cool in a lifestyle way; you could easily see one of these

2023 Ford F-150 Powerboost

towing a pair of Sea Doos or rigged with a tailgate-mounted tent. My tester’s FX4 package, meanwhile, adds underbody skid plates and side decals. It may not move the needle much in terms of separation from other F-150 models, but it still looks darn cool.

While the exterior styling may be evolutionary more than revolutionary, the interior is much more of a departure, especially considering its powerfolding shift lever. What that means is that with the press of a button, you can fold the console-mounted shifter into a small storage bin, leaving room for the armrest to transform into an entirely flat work surface perfect for a laptop, tablet or sandwich while on the job.

It’s a great feature, though I wonder if it would have made more sense to be able to fold it mechanically with the release of a pin or something along those lines. I guess there is the lingering fear in the back of my mind that this electric motor is just another source of maintenance. I also wish that if left in “flat” mode after you park and lock, it would automatically deploy once you start up again. That’s assuming, of course, you’ve left the folding work surface stowed.

Other important interior bits include SYNC4 infotainment, displayed across a massive 12-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay; digital gauge cluster with one of the more unique instrument clusters you’ve ever seen, and optional fold-flat front seats so you can rest at the jobsite.

My truck’s SuperCrew cab gets a flat floor in the back for great legroom and gear storage (there’s also lockable under-seat storage) while size-wise, it’s almost identical to the second row of the Expedition SUV with which it shares a platform. There’s actually more legroom in the pickup. Put simply: it feels massive inside the F-150 and does justice to the “SuperCrew” name.

Speaking of crews and work surfaces: the interior system is one thing, but Ford has also paid special

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2023 24

attention to the bed. It has all the requisite anchors and accessory rails, but it also gets bonuses like side steps that extend beyond the back of the cab, so you can use them to help access the front of the bed. The tailgate is power-operated on my Lariat tester and when it’s open, it becomes a workbench complete with etched-on ruler, c-clamp mounts, holders for your phone, tablet and coffee and a smart bed access system. It’s a two-step process to open first the step then the hand-hold, but once done, it provides easy bed access.

It’s not the piece de resistance when it comes to the pickup bed, though; that’s left for something called Pro Power Onboard (PPO), which is a fancy name for an on-board power generator. The Powerboost hybrid’s battery allows for 2.4 kW of charge and can be optioned up to 7.2 kW, which means not only can you power a bandsaw at the job site or a television at a tailgate party, you could probably also power a house. Or a tiny village.

With PPO, you don’t have to waste precious bed space to accommodate a separate generator. It’s a great addition that adds a ton of functionality.

Speaking of functionality: while the Powerboost is bested only by the Lightning and two Raptor models when it comes to horsepower, it does give up some capability in terms of towing and hauling to the Ecoboost; the latter can tow 14,000 lbs and haul 3,250 lbs, while the former drops to 12,700/2,120 when similarly equipped.

Power from the 3.5L V6 hybrid comes in at 430 hp and 570 pound-feet of torque, meaning slightly less hp than the Raptor, but more torque. Power comes on nice and smoothly and the transition from EV power to gas power is subtle; no real vibration as the gas engine comes online, just a smooth transfer of power and gutsy progress down the road ahead.

There are eight drive modes to choose from including Eco at one end of the performance spectrum, and Sport on the other, interspersed with tow/haul, mud/rut, slippery and so on. These play with the various electronic driver aids, the transmission and the engine to provide optimal progress over any terrain and under any form of duress. Some of the modes, meanwhile, will rely more on the gas engine while others – Eco, for example – will rely more heavily on the EV motors. Power is transferred to all four wheels, meanwhile, through the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the gas trucks get. It’s a fantastic powertrain. It

really is, and while it’s down on power to the Hybrid Max powertrain found in the Toyota Tundra, it makes up for it by being better on fuel. Which, many would argue, is why you’d buy something like this.

The FX4 package plays its part by adding offroad-tuned dampers as well as monotube rear shocks and a rock crawl mode. It makes the F-150 feel a little more floaty over bumps on smooth roads, but you will appreciate –as I did -- all that extra off-road oomph as the goings get rougher. Since you can’t spec the Powerboost for either the Tremor or Raptor, the FX4 package is the only way to get better off-road performance with a Powerboost-equipped truck. It goes the other way, too, because you can’t spec FX4 for the Lightning, making the Powerboost FX4 the off-road electrified model of the bunch.

The least-expensive way to get into a Powerboost truck is to start with a $65,750 Lariat model and add an extra $4,575 for the Powerboost. I absolutely love the power it delivers, love the fact that it gets the more powerful PPO options, but the 11.3L/100 km I saw is a 3 litres per 100 jump over what Ford claims for it and as is often the case with hybrids of almost any stripe, you’ll have to drive a lot to earn back the savings in fuel.

Driven more conservatively – and for a longer spell than I did – I’m sure the advantages would come more into focus and I wonder if more buyers will just be happy with the extra power it delivers. Bottom line? This Powerboost hybrid is a very compelling alternative and one that I think folks that use their trucks as a family hauler as well as a gear hauler will appreciate.

RV-ING: 2023 ROADTREK ZION SLUMBER CLASS

B TP

Steady Seller

At the Tampa Super RV show this past January, I poked around inside a Roadtrek Zion. Now, this Class B van conversion was first introduced at the Louisville RV Show in 2015. I decided to review it again – not because it’s “all-new” – instead because it’s been such a steady seller these past 8 years.

Roadtrek was one of the first Class B manufacturers to buy and build on the newly introduced Ram ProMaster chassis back in 2015. The fact that it’s now building a variety of van configurations speaks to how well it’s been accepted by Class B customers. It’s worth having a look at again, as well as exploring one of its newest configurations – the pop-top Slumber model.

What’s unique about the ProMaster in the van world is its front-wheel drive design, which Ram says gives its new van several best-in-class features. Such as: fuel economy, cargo capacity, payload, turning radius, interior ceiling height and lowest step-in height. If you are a company like Roadtrek who builds on stock vans, this is all good news. Hence the original Zion.

But, back to the key differences between this and other vans. It’s the lack of a rear driveshaft, full axle and differential that makes the body sit very low. This offers up more inside space for Roadtrek to build in – but it also gives it a low centre of gravity and a firm, planted feeling while driving.

Up front, the turning radius and steering feel isn’t just a lucky engineering break. No, again, it’s because of the front-wheel-drive design. It puts the weight of the engine, transaxle and drive components right under the driver’s feet and the position of that front axle will turn this van around in a very tight circle. It uses Ram’s Pentastar V6 gas engine, and also offers a stability program that includes wind assist, sway assist, drift compensation, rollover mitigation and (when towing) trailer sway control.

So, what’s inside the built-up Zion?

• Exposed centre aisle for storage of larger gaming and sporting items

• Firefly coach monitoring system

• Galley features a 5.0 cu.ft. refrigerator, propane stove, microwave and flip up counter extension with charging station

• Loads of storage in the kitchen including a slide out pantry and large pot drawer

• Interior permanent bathroom with marine toilet, sink and shower

• Automatic propane heating system

• Abundance of interior storage including large under-sofa drawers

• Rear power sofas can be used as twin beds or easily transform to a king size bed

Other technical features include:

• 11,000 BTU roof-mount air conditioner

• Retractable power awning

• Outdoor shower

• Heavy duty, magnetic bug screen for rear and passenger sliding door

• Power steps

• Easily accessible hookups

• Large windows with "peek through" vents for a beautiful and sleek look

• Power side mirrors that fold for tight spaces

• 300 watts of solar power

I have often said that Class B’s get driven more than any other type of motorhome – shorter trips, taken more often and with adventure destinations for many. The Zion is perfect for this active lifestyle, as the open concept floor plan allows you to pack all your outdoor adventure toys, from bikes to kayaks, in the spacious centre aisle.

BC Overland Rally

Story and photos by Spencer Whitney

N ow in its second year at the Merritt music festival grounds, the B.C. Overland Rally guides hundreds of intrepid travellers, and dozens of vendors and exhibitors to the Nicola Valley each summer. Despite scorching temperatures and dusty gusting winds, the event went off without a hitch thanks to the efforts of seasoned volunteers and organizers who each contribute to its success.

We spent a weekend at BCOR this past July to see what’s new in Canada’s overlanding scene. With speakers from as far away as Australia and South Africa and vendors from all over North America, it’s no wonder why everyone in the off-road scene in Western Canada makes BCOR a mandatory stop on their adventure itinerary!

Dan Grec’s Jeep JL Overlanding Rig

Dan Grec has been travelling the world for years, as chronicled in his popular book “The Road Chose Me.” This Australian-turnedadopted-Canadian has built several vehicles over his time as an overlander, all of them on Jeep platforms. His latest build is a very compact and useful overland camper on a Jeep Wrangler chassis – the 4-door JL has been chopped in to a 2-door and equipped with a rigid composite camper made by Wabi Sabi Overland. The camper features minimalist living space to stay compact - there’s plenty of tight roads to be found off the beaten path. Dan entertained the evening crowd at BCOR with stories of his recent and not-so-recent adventures – criss-crossing Australia, venturing into Africa, and crossing borders in South America. We were really impressed by the simple and concise build on his new Jeep, which is set to depart North America soon. It’s clear

that Dan has spent years iterating and trialling different types of vehicles to end up with this new build, so we’re excited to see what stories will come from him next.

Deep Cycle Systems 100AH Slimline Battery

DCS is a popular brand in Australia and has recently jumped the pond into North America. DCS makes tough, purpose-built lithium batteries for marine and 4x4 use. The extensive display of batteries at BCOR was particularly interesting for anyone looking to stuff a high-capacity battery in to a tight spot on their rig. At under two inches thick, their 100-amp-hour slim battery is bound to please anyone looking to hide batteries under a seat or load

space. Other models include deep-cycle and starting batteries, and even units for electric boat motors. With built-in Bluetooth charge monitoring and military-grade electronics, these batteries are going to be popular in Canada – look for local dealers coming soon to their web site.

You can wear it as a backpack or carry it on a shoulder, and at the end of a trip it’s easily washed out. Best of all, the plastic components are user-replaceable, and all of their bags feature a lifetime warranty. Armorlite Technologies EXP-2 Truck Bed Camper

Not all truck bed campers are created equal. Having seen Edmonton-based Armorlite Technologies’ EXP-2, we know this to be truer than ever. Weighing in at an almost impossible 583 pounds,

– from windows and hinges, to composite panels, to die-cast corner cappings. There’s no other manufacturer in Canada going in to this level of detail, and thanks to extensive experience in cold temperatures, there’s very little thermal bridging – this means you can camp at +40 or -40 without worry. Leaning on a background in industrial production of mission-critical mobile workshops and labs, the company is dedicated to quality and innovation and wants to pass on the same processes to recreational consumers. Topping it all off, the built-in LED lighting is like nothing we’ve ever seen on a camper, and the pop-open rear door is a convenient way to get in and out – and a great conversation starter.

An Honest Truck

2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but that hasn’t stopped Toyota from trying with the 2023 4Runner. And they’re doing it, unsurprisingly, by looking into the history not just of the 4Runner, but of the Toyota brand in general and more specifically, the Toyota brand’s various off-road racing efforts.

For 2023, that comes in the form of the Venture package you see here. It provides 17-inch bronze TRD-style wheels and graphics, spectacular red, yellow orange “hockey stick” graphic along the side and a matching sticker on the front grille divide, big “Toyota” script across the nose and a choice of three colours: red, white or black.

And if I may say, it looks spectacular in every single shade. When I first was told that my tester would be red I was unsure; I didn’t think that fantastic graphic would stand out so well against red paintwork, but when seen in person, it works just fine, thank you very much. Having said that: I’d still opt for the black. But that’s me.

The colours are here to represent the Toyota’s off-road racing efforts through the years, namely the Baja racers found throughout the brand’s illustrious history. Put simply, it looks awesome with the oh-so-retro “40th Anniversary” badges providing the perfect topper to the whole shebang.

There are practical pieces, too, in the form of blacked-out roof rails, fog lights and side steps. This really is the perfect stylistic tribute to such a storied model.

Inside, well, what can you say, really? It’s pretty spartan with big dash and door panels, big chunky centre stack loaded with big, chunky dials for your climate control and infotainment system, big, chunky gearlever and big, chunky wheel – even the throw on the indicator stalk provides a nice, positive action; these chunky bits are a perfect fit for what is a very chunky truck.

The transition to 40th Anniversary spec, meanwhile, adds embroidered head restraints and some bronze stitching on the seats and shift lever, and another one of those great badges on the dash ahead of the front passenger. End of the day, though, the indications that this is a particularly special 4Runner are more present on the exterior. I wonder if they could have included just a little more of that tricolour motif on the interior; a stripe across

the glovebox lid, perhaps, or atop the front centre armrest. It does add synthetic leather seats, though, of which I am a fan.

As spartan as it is inside, it’s not that it’s bereft of tech; there’s no power tailgate option, but there is a power sliding rear window (awesome), adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and an infotainment display with Apple CarPlay compatibility and Android Auto works, too. That’s all good, but we’re still working with Toyota’s previous-gen infotainment system here, and in terms of speed, graphics and touchscreen responsiveness, it does lag behind pretty much all of the competition. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it looks like something you might see in the era this truck is a callback to, but it seems closer to that than it does to the latest systems, including Toyota’s own Toyota Multimedia Infotainment.

While it may really be showing its age inside in the stylistic and tech senses, I like all the broad panels and right angles because it means a reduced count of sharp edges and corners that will jab my knees or lower thighs during drives. There’s a pile of space for front-seat occupants, which is complemented by a throne-like seating position no matter how low you set the seats, and a great view out through that upright windscreen and over that hood bulge. Even as a tall driver feeling like a gargoyle perched on a ledge, I had headroom to spare. That’s what ultra-square styling and a tall roof will do.

What it also does, though, is ask back seat passengers to, well, take a back seat when it comes to comfort. There’s a clear 200 mm less legroom back there than there is up front and while the spec sheet doesn’t say so, it sure feels like there’s quite a lot less headroom, too. What’s funny, is that it seems that a move done to make rear seat passengers more comfortable – mounting the seats higher, to better see forward – had the unfortunate effect of bringing my scalp perilously close to the headliner. At least the rear seat folds flat with a single tug of a shouldermounted lever. That’s good, as the rear cargo area is not all that long.

Cargo? Rear passenger space? What are you on about, man? This is a 4Runner, the latest in a long line of legendary Toyota off-roaders.

Who says comfort is part of the equation? Well, the heated front seats, leather seating surfaces and dual-zone climate control may suggest otherwise, but yes, the 4Runner continues to display on-road manners that make it seem unstoppable, whether you’re going to the shops (“Hey! We’d be a lot quicker getting out of here if we just drove over the abutment and on to the street…”), on the highway or on a gravel road covered in loose shale and tire tracks left by off-road buggies that would high-centre lesser SUVs.

Power for the 4Runner comes courtesy of a 4.0L V6 good for 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, fed to the wheels via a five-speed auto. Yes, that’s pretty much the same spec we’ve seen since about 2010 but aging powertrain be darned, the 4Runner’s engine is deep-chested and muscular. It’s not fast per se, but you just get the sense that the way power is being processed sits somewhere between how a rock crusher goes about its business, and how an icebreaker does. Just strong, confident push no matter the rev range and able to work just as well in the heat of the Sahara as it would over a freezing trek through Antarctica. Seriously, you feel like you could drive into a hail of bullets and they’d all just bounce off you, like Superman. Luckily, while the offroad area I was headed for has had its fair share of hunting parties in the past, it’s no longer legal to hunt there, so that’s a theory I wouldn’t have to test.

What I would be testing, though, is the Toyota 4Runner’s absolutely formidable 4x4 system and Bridgestone Blizzak rubber. No, these win-

ter tires aren’t as hardcore as the Dueler tires that come as standard or the Nitto Terra Grapplers found on the TRD Pro version, but you really wouldn’t know it from the way they performed as I crunched and munched over loose rock and gravel through a network of forestry roads just outside of Vancouver.

With 4Low selected and Loose Rock mode activated (there are five drive modes altogether: Mud and Sand, Loose Rock, Rock and Dirt, Mogul, Rock), the 4Runner ploughed through anything I threw at it, positively munching the terrain like a moviegoer does buttered popcorn. There was no wheelspin, no complaints from the powertrain, just furious, undeniable and unstoppable – there’s that word again – force as I scrambled up grades, through elephant tracks and whatever else exists on roads like this that Toyota has studied to ensure that the 4Runner can trounce all of it.

When you think about it, a retro design package for the 4Runner seems perfect and somewhat needless all at once, doesn’t it? All these years later, the 4Runner continues to work exactly as its meant to. It’s an honest truck, a workhorse and so achingly good at what it does that you almost find yourself thinking “so THAT’S why they haven’t really changed this thing in a decade.”

It’s so good, in fact, that you don’t need a retro package to prove that, right? The truck is, at the heart of its being, inextricably linked to all those trucks this package celebrates and…ahhh, forget it. The 40th Anniversary looks awesome, taps oh-so-perfectly into the current “rad” craze being experienced in the car world and elsewhere, and at $3,300 over standard, is a pretty affordable way to up the “cool” factor. You should get one. We would.

Ruggedization

2023 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek

and photos by Gerry Frechette

The various auto manufacturers are constantly looking for that niche to fill, that trend to exploit, anything where they can take an existing model, make some inexpensive alterations, and appeal to the buyer who wants the latest “in” vehicle.

One of the big trends this year seems to be what might be called “ruggedization,” or giving an existing SUV a more adventurous look and capabiliities, so that people might think the vehicle is capable of heading out on an overlanding exhibition.

The Nissan Pathfinder is a long-established model, that has evolved into a roomy three-row family-type SUV with ample soft-road capabilities, and some off-road ones too. Its unibody / all-wheel drive architecture won’t see it climbing too many mountains, though.

But Nissan wants to play in the “rugged” niche with the Pathfinder, and the Rock Creek model is the result. Some well-chosen alterations have resulted in a Pathfinder that looks adventurous and can back that up – at least to a certain extent.

Starting under the hood, the well-proven 3.5-litre V6 continues in the Rock Creek, albeit with a bit more power thanks to some re-jigging of the throttle controls – and the recommendation of premium gasoline. The horsepower is up 11 to 295, and torque is bumped 11 lb-ft to 270. This engine is perfectly adequate for all everyday use, smooth and willing to rev when called upon. This performance is aided and abetted by a responsive 9-speed automatic transmission, versus the CVT automatic that used to be on Pathfinders. The towing rating of 6,000 pounds is amongst the highest in the crossover SUV segment.

Continuing with the hardware changes, the Rock Creek’s suspension has been slightly strengthened, although perhaps not as much as one

might have thought it would be. Its body has been raised some 5/8inch, yielding a ground clearance of 7.7-inches (196 mm). The rolling stock at the corners sees the most visible change, with 18-inch wheels replacing the 20-inch units available on top-line regular Pathfinders, in a style that is called “bead lock”, a means of firmly attaching the tire

to the rim of the wheel and reducing the chance of a tire failure in the real rough stuff. Except, these wheels only look the part; the bead locks serve only a stylistic function.

Mounted on the wheels are a set of 265/60-18 Toyo Open Country A/T (all terrain) tires, an off-road upgrade on the regular-spec all-season tires. On the short gravel-and-mud course we tried out the Rock Creek on, they proved to grip tenaciously, giving the RC some legitimate cred in the rough stuff. On tarmac, though, you can expect them to be a bit noisier and less-smooth riding than the all-season tires.

OFF-rOAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2023 40

Getting the power to those tires is Nissan’s intelligent four-wheel drive system with seven-position Drive and Terrain Mode Selector, including Mud/Rut and Sand. To keep an eye on the terrain as you approach it, Nissan adds an off-road mode to the Intelligent Around View Monitor. Also standard are Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist and a full suite of electronic safety measures.

Completing the visual differences, the Rock Creek is given a unique front bumper and fascia below it, which look burlier than the ordinary model’s units, but, we are told, don’t give the RC any more clearance when approaching an obstacle off-road. Nor are skid plates part of the design.

Up top, there is a large black tubular roof rack, of the type you would see on any vehicle outfitted for overlanding. It has a weight limit of 220 pounds,

MSRP (Base): $52,098

Vehicle Layout: Front engine, AWD, 4-door SUV

Engine: ................................................... 3.5L DOHC V6

Transmission: 9-spd auto

Power: 295 hp

Torque: 270 lb-ft

Brakes: 4-wheel disc, ABS

Curb Weight: ................................................... 2,091 kg

Towing capacity: ............................................ 2,718 kg

Fuel Consumption (L/100 km, city/hwy): 11.9/10

which might be enough for a tent to be mounted to it, but not also the adult people who might want to sleep in the tent. That large rack means that the Rock Creek cannot be had with the moonroof underneath it, that the SV model upon which it is based has.

Inside, the Rock Creek rocks its own special trim, including leatheretteupholstered seats (which would be easier to clean all that off-road mud from) trimmed with orange stitching. Otherwise, the equipment list is pretty similar to that of the SV, which means some of the higher-end gear like navigation, upgraded audio and bigger screen are absent. Present, though, are Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, along with satellite radio.

As previously mentioned, the RC is a three-row-of-seating SUV, with the middle-row bench allowing for eight passengers, although the three in the third row will necessarily be less than full-size adults. Like most of these vehicles, that third row will usually be folded down unless you are transporting six or seven kids to the soccer game, yielding a quite roomy cargo area. With some 18 cupholders, all those kids will be able to find somewhere to park their beverages.

While most Rock Creek buyers won’t have fuel efficiency too high up on their ‘want’ list, the RC’s 11.9L/100km city, and 10L highway, consumption figures are interesting when compared with those of the SV model, which rates at 11.6 and 9.2. With the RC weighing but 78 pounds more, one has to think that the aerodynamic drag of the roof rack and perhaps the front bumper, along with what one assumes is the higher rolling resistance of the allterrain tires, account for most of the difference.

In any case, the Pathfinder Rock Creek is a very capable vehicle for the active family to head to the great outdoors, with some useful enhancements over the regular Pathfinders. People looking at it might even think it has all that is needed to go overlanding, but that may be more wishful thinking than reality.
