MSD Ignitions new Atomic EFI

Comp Cams is taking its popular line of rocker arms to a whole new level of performance with the new ARC series of Ultra-Gold Rocker Arms. The rockers feature an arced, recessed and contoured design and use cutting-edge design techniques that will ensure they increase engine power, enhance valve train stability and improve oiling. The ARC Rockers will feature a new extrusion that results in an even stronger stiffer body without compromising mass. All Ultra-Gold ARC Rockers feature a pring oiler channel through the body that will make for improved lubrication.

MSD ignitions have introduced its brand new Atomic EFI system, designed to eliminate the hassles of old and outdated carburetors. The Atomic EFI is designed so that installation will take less than a weekend of work due to the unit needing only two external sensors meaning that there is barely any wiring required. The system is self learning, and will adjust the tune automatically to make the most of your engine. The EFI system also features a great mix of modern technology and classic design to ensure it will have that great look under the hood.

New 0W-20 Motor Oil Released from Royal Purple After Toyota and Honda recommended a zero weight synthetic motor oil for a growing number of new models, Royal Purple has introduced its new 0W-20 motor oil. Lower viscosity oils, such as this one, are designed to help improve the vehicle’s fuel economy. The oil exceeds industry standards and is an American Petroleum Institute licensed motor oil. Royal Purple uses superior additive technology that decreases metal-to-metal contact which, due to its low coefficient of friction, results in greater fuel economy. TIGER AUTOMOTIVE, SASKATOON, SASK. is needed. Tiger’s stock is second to none, by far the largest in Canada. However, having the part is one thing, serving the customer in a prompt and professional manner is another. Customers will feel safe in knowing that customer service means a lot to Tiger, with ten helpful staff ready to provide you with a more rewarding experience than what a franchise operation can deliver. Backing up the counter staff is a six-bay shop that is staffed by six technicians with a combined 100-years of automotive experience who can professionally install most of the quality products that get sold over the counter.

In a world that is rapidly being taken over by mega-corporations flaunting their products in monotonous franchise outlets, it’s nice to know that there are still a few shops out there that stay true to their roots and take local customer service seriously. Tiger Automotive is one of those shops that has bucked that current trend, yet has managed to continue to operate a growing and successful business. Tiger Automotive opened its doors in 1983 and since that time has been steadily expanding the business with consistent growth each and every year, taking on more product lines, and are now about to take another big step in the automotive industry by expanding to a new, much larger store in the very near future. Heavily weighted in the truck market, Tiger specializes in several different categories of vehicle modifications for both cars and trucks alike. Categories such as box covers, commercial and fleet vehicle solutions, tool boxes, liquid transfer tanks, bumpers, hitches, chrome accessories, lift kits, remote starts and performance for both gas and diesel are big sellers. Exterior and interior lighting have also become extremely popular as of late with the influx of LED products. All your vehicle needs and modifications can be easily satisfied at Tiger. What makes Tiger stand out from the rest, is not only do they carry product in each category, they carry a multitude of different brands for each. They have eleven different lift kit suppliers that they work closely with, seven different tool box manufacturers, eleven different box cover companies and enough accessory suppliers to fill a hall at SEMA. It is this unique relationship to a massive industry that allows customers to not only get the parts they need, but to also fine tune their purchase to ensure they get exactly what they want out of an important part.

It has been a business plan that has proven extremely successful for Tiger, despite the recent recession, and has them rallying the company into a new endeavour, that of classic vehicle restoration. The restoration business is relatively new to Tiger Automotive; but they are jumping into the game in a big way. Their goal is to supply customers with the best restoration parts available and to grow the business in the same way that the business has evolved since its founding. The restoration business has been growing over the years and Tiger wants to be a big part of that, specializing in both car and truck restoration. As such, Tiger has put their uniquely prosperous relationships with suppliers to good use bringing in all the quality restoration parts one could ever want for a classic rebuild with names like Golden Leaf Automotive, PUI, MBM Brake, Precision Replacement Parts, Trim Parts, Auto Metal Direct, Specialty Wheel, Metro Weather Stripping,

OER Parts, Robbins Tops, Eastwood, Jim Osborn Reproductions and Original Parts Group, just to scratch the surface. You know that Tiger will have the part you need to bring that special old car back to life.

So, when it comes time to outfit a work truck, flash up your daily driver, make your off-road vehicle a little more capable or if you want to bring an old friend back to life, check out Tiger Automotive’s website at www.tigerautomotive.com to get an idea of the type of products and work Tiger can provide for The massive inventory you. If you’re someone who wants to talk to a real person, then try calling them at 306-665-7766, or swing by the shop to get Tiger yields is what allows them to ensure the service you deserve at 815 Circle Drive East, Saskatoon, the customer has what Sask.

A Street Rod Named “Merlot”

Story and photos by Cam Hutchins

A

fter building a very cool 1928 Model A two-door sedan with a Coca-Cola cooler years back and driving it 30,000 miles over nine years, Jim Lyons of Abbotsford wanted a roadster. Dennis Kasper  had a ‘33 Roadster that Lyons wanted to buy and finish, but he could not convince Kasper to part with it. After waiting him out a year, Kasper’s attention fell on an Oldsmobile, so a deal was struck. After driving the ‘33 extensively, including a road trip incorporating Puyallup, Spokane and Pleasanton, the building bug hit again. Deciding he wanted a 1951 Mercury convertible, he went searching for the right car. The prices seemed too high, and with the lack of aftermarket parts, his search was widened to other convertibles. At a swap meet in 2004, Lyons saw an unfinished 1940 Ford Convertible Wescott body in the parking area. The owner’s stall number was wrong so it took some major detective work to find the owner, and he was told it was totally complete and just needed final assembly and paint. The price was too high, so Lyons went home without the car, but after thinking it over for a couple of days and deciding to sell the ‘33 roadster, he called up the owner and offered just enough extra to buy the car. The car was complete with all the 28 Performance Plus FEB/MAR 2012

parts required to finish the car and the seller had been into street rods for years, but had just finished restoring a Mustang and wanted to get out of street rods, so many parts not even for the ‘40 Ford were given to Lyons. It had a partially-boxed Ford frame which had been tubbed and had a Ford nine-inch rearend with coilover shocks, a 351 Windsor with C6 tranny and Mustang II front end with small disc brakes. Wiring harness, gauges, a new Wise Guy Seat and three grilles were provided - an Alumicraft custom grille was installed, also a ‘39 grille from Bob Drake, and a ‘39-’40 three-piece grille cast in pewter that needed to be chromed. Lyons looked at the assembly of pieces and the primered body and basically sold everything except the frame, rearend, front suspension, Wiseguy seat and the body. Starting with a relatively clean slate, or at least a primered slate, he started to look for the correct pieces. Flush with cash from the sale of the parts and the ‘33, Lyons went looking for the correct parts to build a very cool ride. He was lucky to find a race-prepared 302 mill with fuel injection and a blower and an AOD  transmission for a great price. The block was about the only Ford part and all the rest of the engine was the best performance/race parts available. The FREE CLASSIFIED & EVENT LISTINGS HOTLINE: 1-888-500-4591

blower was removed due to space restrictions and the new mill was installed. The coilovers were gone, replaced with Shockwave by Airride Technologies. Twelve-inch four-piston drilled-and-slotted Wilwood brakes provided the stopping, and the original ‘40 Ford frame was now complete. The body was getting its share of work, and this particular Wescott body had been originally purchased by an enthusiast who bought all the first pressings of the Wescott factory. It was a custom body, having been channelled three inches and the hood sectioned 2.5 inches to give it a better look. The fenders were shortened (bobbed).and the running boards removed from the design. The original owner was getting on in years so sold it the next owner who went to town buying parts, but the project stalled somewhere along the way. Lyons liked the look of the car, but liked running boards better, so he bought some steel ones from the Old Car Centre. Of course, the running boards did not fit, as the body was lowered over the frame during the channelling process and the length was wrong due to the bobbing of the fenders. Lyons fabricated special brackets to attach the running boards to the frame and Ron Latham, with his fibreglass skills learned building boats, took the fenders and fixed the fibreglass to fit the running boards.

At almost every show, wheels and colours were scrutinized for the right choice for Lyons’ ‘40 Ford. Spotting a set of Intro Wheels “Matrix” on a beautiful burgundy ‘37 Ford Roadster, Lyons ordered 17-inchers for the front and 18s for the rear, and uses Toyo Proxes tires. The tires are larger yet and Lyons took a fair amount of guff from his friends and advisers after seeing them sitting in his garage. They told him he was crazy, since they look like tractor tires on SUV wheels. The friends were proved wrong after seeing them on the finished car...but Lyons still had to completely deflate them to fit them onto the car.

Being a local dealer for American Autowire, he used a Highway 22 kit with keyless entry, shaved handles, power windows and power-actuated trunk, and he customized the dash with TPI-Tech Instruments Gauges. Previously, he had won prizes at a couple of Goodguys events, during his road trip with the ‘33, where  he won a coupon for partial payment of the “Airride” kit and also a “Budnik The many months agonizing over the correct paint choice were Wheels” coupon. He choose a Budnik Banjo Billet steering wheel ended one evening when Lyons and his wife were having a glass of Merlot wine on the back deck, and when lifting the glasses that was wrapped in the same material as the seats.

to toast, the sun shone through the glass and they both were hooked. Previously, they had explored two-tone and three-tone paints, and tans with a dark roof, but after conferring with their painter Johnny Guenther, he assured them the colour they wanted was Candy Brandy Wine.

• Our Carbs are completely Remanufactured and Re-Coloured to their original ‘Holley Gold’ Specs

Hence the car came to be called “Merlot.” Guenther had recently painted a car this colour and it was available from House of Kolor over either a black, gold, silver or white base. Again, the peanut gallery piped up with warnings that dark burgundies had been done to death. Many hours pouring over websites full of street rods assured Jim his choice was solid and the car would look stunning with the black base.

The interior was left to the capable hands of Ron Fast, but not before more meddling from the “Gang.” Lyons wanted a burgundy interior and the naysayers cried foul and suggested every colour under the sun before a brown shade was chosen, but Lyons’ wife Elinore held her ground and the burgundy vinyl seems to please everyone now and even fools many into thinking it is leather. The back seat was completely fabricated by Ron Fast and folds flat so 2x4 can be carried if necessary...probably not a bad idea if there is another uprising from the friends. The supplied Wiseguy seat was almost comical when first put in, as it sat way too high. Luckily, this was done before upholstery, so it was a fairly straightforward job to cut the mounting brackets and seatbacks. A fine Dark German Weave carpet accents the black Hartz cloth roof....another choice hard fought for, but finalized after seeing a Willys online that was a similar colour with a black roof. The roof latches are available from Wescott, but Lyons’ brother-in-law Doug Esau machined a perfect set of latches out of billet aluminum.

Finishing off the interior is a sound system out of a 2006 Impala mounted on a pullout tray beneath the front seat with four small speakers placed under the front seat and in the back mounted in the seat risers. An MP3 port allows Lyons to enjoy any tunes he feels like, but the convertible top and wicked engine noise makes a stereo redundant.

He sourced one out of Spokane from Spalding Wreckers with the all-important computer and transmission for around $2,000. Once the motor is finally installed, Ron Latham will be up to his fibreglass tricks again and making mock big block valve covers and manifold cover that will have a hydro graphics “Mirage Hydro Graphics” carbon fibre pattern by Rocket Cermacoat.

The car was finished in 2009, and has been driven to the L.A. Roadster show and the Interior of B.C. many times and has won many awards, but Lyons pondered the drivability of the high-performance 302. After driving many of his customers’ cars after wiring them, he decided to go with a late-model 5.3 Litre LS engine.

The car will continue to be shown and driven around B.C. and the Pacific Northwest with a planned trip to the Pleasanton Goodguys Show. So, if you see a stunning Candy Brandy Wine ‘40 Ford with a black top, go up to the owner and suggest it should have a brown interior...I dare you!

PRO TOURING

So You Want to Build a Pro Touring Car? By Blake Foster

S

o you want to build a ProTouring car? Well, since that is what Speedtech Performance does, along with the related suspension components, let’s get started. Here is the project we are going to start with. This mint 1981 Pontiac Firebird has less than 25,000 original miles and the owner wants a new car. He figured if he has had it this long, why not perform a transformation. Here is the plan. Since the owner wants the full Pro Touring treatment, the build will include: • GM crate motor - 430 hp Corvette LS3 • GM computer and harness • Tremec T56 6 speed transmission • Centerforce dual friction clutch

The rear suspension will include: • Speedtech’s Torque Arm package • Ridetech Coilovers • The wheel wells will be mini-tubbed to fit 345 x 19 wheels and tires. There will be some body mods also to improve the looks, and the car will get a complete new paint job (with a new colour). The interior will be redone to update the creature comforts as well as the look; after all it is 2012, so some new materials and styles will be employed. STEP ONE Think about how you want to use the car. If you have been reading the last six issues, you will know what I am talking about; knowing how you will use the car will determine what parts are used. This example is going to be a driver - no road racing, no autoX, no drag racing, just hop in with the wife and be able to drive anywhere. That plays into many items in the build engine / transmission combination as well as the rear-end gear selection. This project is a driver, not a race car, so that is why the stock Corvette motor and six-speed transmission is a no brainer, and in order to add some grunt, it will get 3:73 rear gears with a good posi unit, which will make for a great highway cruiser as well as a car that WILL burn the hides if desired. STEP TWO Pick the wheels, both style and size. I say this because the wheel is one of the most important visual aspects of the finished product

The suspension will include Speedtech’s full Track Time package Front Subframe upgrade includes: • Upper and lower tubular control arms • AFX Forged aluminum spindles and billet steering arms • Ridetech coilover shocks • Lee 12:1 NASCAR steering box • 1 5/16” sway bar • Geometry-corrected steering linkage. 34 Performance Plus FEB / MAR 2012

PRO TOURING and really drives the style of the car going forward. Think about it; if you are going to run 15 x 3 Weld Drag Lights, the finished style of the car is going to be completely different than if you pick an all-black 19-inch multi-spoke wheel with European styling, isn’t it? Having chosen the size, for obvious reasons, they have to fit or be made to fit. This project is getting 19x12 rear wheels and 19x10 fronts, and the wheels’ style will be more European than muscle car multi-spoke black wheels. Tires will be 335 or 345 rear and 285 or 295 fronts, which will give it a very supercar look. STEP THREE Order a bunch of parts. This is often the most painful stage, as a lot of parts get ordered before any real work can be done. STEP FOUR Start the teardown. This is where we will start the build process, and all the parts that will not be reused are trashed, or sold. The parts that will get reused will all need to be restored and/or modified; things like the factory suspension (in this case) will be completely replaced, and the only piece we will keep is the subframe. The only major modifications this car is getting that require cutting is for the mini tubs and subframe connectors. Stay tuned as we work through the modifications and transformation of this 1981 Firebird into a wicked Trans Am that will hold its own in 2012.

WEBSITE: WWW.CASCADEVANS.NET WHAT THEY DO: INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY AND CONVERTIBLE TOPS SPECILISTS FOR SPECIALTY VEHICLES THE COMPANY LINE Background: Cascade Vans and Interiors is a family owned business, now into its third generation, specializing in interior and upholstery design and installation. As the name implies, the company was founded during the popular days of customizing van interiors of years gone by. However, with a wealth of experience and know how, Dale Burtoway has grown the company into one of Canada’s most recognized interior specialists.

something from the early 1900s, we can custom-build a soft top in stayfast cloth or vinyl. I have all the aluminum tubing and benders here, and making it fit just right is our specialty. PP: With that in mind, I would think you are a pretty popular guy with the 4WD and boating crowd as well, eh?

PP: So Dale, it’s been a while since we last talked to you. We hear that there have been some interesting changes you have made to Cascade Vans & Interiors. DB: Yes, we’ve been working quite hard to renovate the shop over the last couple of months here. We’ve put in a new hoist in the back and we’ve spiced up the front showroom, added another sewing machine and made the work tables a little larger. PP: Sounds like business has been pretty good to warrant such a renovation. DB: You know, business is steady, but these changes have been made more to make the shop a little more efficient and more comfortable to work in; it makes it a little easier to get the work done and to try new things. But mainly, it’s a lot more customerfriendly as well. PP: And how about the front showroom? DB: Yeah, the front showroom is really kind of neat. When you walk in the door, there is a long counter, then behind that is a large open space that I can bring a car into and work on it right there in front of customers. So it helps pique people’s curiosity as they walk by on the street and it also gives us a little more space to put more products out on display and show some of the new stuff that we are getting in now. PP: Putting yourself out on display is a brave thing to do as car guys love to stop for a chat; doesn’t that get a bit distracting? DB: You always get a lot of questions and curiosity, but usually they are coming in for a reason. It’s never a distraction when you’re discussing future plans, so it’s really worth my while. You have to spent time with the customer, and I enjoy doing that.

PP: Now earlier you said you have some new products you’re putting on display; what type of new stuff are you now working with? DB: We’ve brought in a full line of new interior accessories like aftermarket seats, and three separate brands of seat belts in all different kinds of colours. We’ve brought in interior door handles, mirrors, cup holders, steering columns, a huge variety of steering wheels, and a lot of manufacturer-recommended cleaning products, stuff that is recommended by the mills that actually produce the leather and stayfast cloth, so top-quality products. We carry steering wheel wraps, so if a guy wants to come in and have us re-cover his steering wheel, we have the right products to do that. Also, we’re stocking a lot of convertible tops now on the shelf, so people can come into the shop with an idea, and we have all this stuff ready to go and can sort them out right away.

that’s the way I like it.

DB: That’s right, those 4x4 and boat soft tops are right up our alley, and we are happy to build something for them, as well as all the interior upholstery. I really like designing a unique or custom design, and 4x4s and boats just give me an even larger canvas to work with. Plus, with the three generations working here, we can come up with some really unique and different things when we all put our minds together. We just don’t do any home furniture; I work on vehicles, and

PP: Now, you guys are always working on something special in the shop; what’s sitting on your floor right now? DB: We sure do. We’ve got our ’41 Willys big-block for the World of Wheels show; it’s still a rod, but it looks like a real race car with 33x22s on the back, but no engine coming through the hood. Then we also have a ’57 here as well that is a rather rare windowed wagon, kind of like a Nomad with a two-piece door on the back, Art Morrison chassis, and we’re putting in four bucket seats and full centre console with a great custom blue and tan interior that will really look good, so we’re happy with that.

PP: And convertible tops are your specialty, are they not? DB: Absolutely, convertible tops and interior upholstery. Like I said, we are stocking a lot of tops for use in popular cars; however, I can build a top-quality top up from scratch. So if a guy wants to come in with an old Packard or
