ne of the big questions when you’re a car memorabilia collector certainly has to be, where exactly do you go to find new and cool items? The internet is always an option and sure, there are a few stores and shops around that sell that kind of thing, but chances are it won’t always be an easy task finding exactly what you are after. Enter Diecast Depot out of Edmonton, Alberta who, since opening in 2005, has created a place where enthusiasts can have it all in a one-stop shop.

Gary Grant’s 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS RS Story and photos by Cam Hutchins
A
uthor Malcolm Gladwell wrote that “ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.” So, Gary Grant of Maple Ridge should be an expert on 1969 Camaros. In 1984 he bought his first 1969 Camaro RS convertible in Daytona Yellow and thought he had the world by the short hairs. He detailed the car and drove it daily, then got a 1969 Indy Pace car, so the first car had to go. What he did not realize was how much he enjoyed working on Camaros and restoring them to their former glory. That was 25 Camaros ago, as well as numerous other Bowtie models...Impalas, Chevelles and one Mustang Mach 1. His pattern is not dissimilar to a kid making car models....buy a project... build it to the best of your abilities and.....get bored and want to build another one. Luckily he has never had trouble selling his One recent Chevrolet SS 427 convertible was judged as almost perfect at the Chicago Supercar Show a couple of years ago, finished projects....while my models are getting dusty. and he is now working on a 1969 COPO 427 Camaro ordered Once finished, he drives it, loves it and looks for a new project. new from Mander Chev Olds. His skills have not gone unnoticed, and he gets to build a lot of very cool, rare cars for customers, who have to be patient as Gary Grant’s own list of Camaros has been peppered with a few of the most desirable Camaros of all time. He bought a 1969 worked a day job and this was his weekend and evening gig. green plain jane 327 automatic Camaro and due to its excellent condition, lightly restored it. It had been sold new in Hamburg, Germany, before the original owner moved from Germany to Bowen Island. He has also owned two 1969 COPO 427 Camaros, a 1967 RS SS, 1967 Indy Pace Car, as well as the 1969 Indy Pace Car. The latest Camaro was so perfect when he bought it, he is probably going to keep it...but time will tell. In 2008, while at the Puyallup Corvette and Hi-Performance Swap Meet, he saw the car for sale. Checking it over, he saw it was a 1969 Camaro RS SS 396 / 350 hp with 90,000 miles showing on the odometer. Not spraying salt everywhere in Washington allowed the car to reach almost 40 years old with only a small amount of rust in the rear quarter panels. 28 Performance Plus APRIL / maY 2015

the car was painted, it came back for final assembly by Grant. The suspension pieces and frame were stripped to bare metal and powder coated. All-new bushings as well as new brake lines and hoses were used. Interestingly, the original leaf springs were re-sprung and restored, not replaced. All the parts needed for the restoration came from Hot Rods and Classics out in Chilliwack. Once the car was stripped and getting painted, all the bits were carefully gone over to find out what needed rebuilding and what needed replacing. The M-21 transmission was completely dismantled and rebuilt back to stock, as was the differential, by Jamie Roth. The 350-

On the doors, a decal is applied after the front end sheet metal is attached to the body, allowing for correct alignments of the hockey stripe. The D96 stripe is standard on all SS models and optional on other models except the Z28.
The car was finished in February, 2015 and will get regular use this year as a fun cruiser. Grant has left his day job, and started a company called Triple G Musclecars Ltd. Now he focuses on building sweet rides for customers all day, so his weekend gig can be cruising ...until he finds another 1969 Camaro that needs lovin.
The underside of the car got a lot of attention, and the tags and overspray marks are exactly what you would have seen coming from the factory. The chambered exhaust was banned part way through the production year for noise complaints, but it sounds great.

model Norma Ann Sykes, who was known as Sabrina. Her main claim to fame was her prodigious hourglass figure of 41-inch (100 cm) breasts coupled with a tiny 19-inch (48 cm) waist and 36-inch (91 cm) hips. The TR3 was not very aerodynamic, so Michelotti was asked to design a sleek body, and Virgilio Conrero was contracted to build a lightweight multi-tube frame. The Conrero was a knockout for its era - the front resembled a Ferrari 375 MM while the rear looked more like a TVR Grantura Series I, fitted with Austin Healey Sprite taillights and recessed turn signals.
As soon as the project was completed, the racing division was disbanded and the four works cars were sold and went to the USA. The only serious track time seen by the Conrero was in 1963 when it was entered in the Sebring 12 hour race by Keymo Motors, where it placed 5th in its class. and repatriated them to England during the mid-‘80s. It has been hidden away ever since, but finally saw daylight in 2010 and joined five other TR2 works cars at the Brooklands Museum reunion. British Columbia resident John Heathcote, whose father, Kit Heathcote, competed in the TR2 (OVC 276) in the centre of the photograph, was at the Brooklands reunion and graciously supplied the photograph for this article. Kit Heathcote is alive and well at age 92, and living in Ottawa.
