Most of us, at one time or another have heard about Aromatherapy. It’s no wonder since Aromatherapy bath, body and home products are one the fastest growing industries today. But what is Aromatherapy? Most people think that Aromatherapy is only used in a fragrant massage, scented lotion or room spray. But the art of Aromatherapy is not only fun, but a healthy addition to any home or office. Properly used, Essential oils and Aromatherapy are not only pleasant smelling, but can create a wonderful physical, spiritual and emotional balance within each person. Throughout history, aromatic plants have been used in medicine, cosmetic care, spiritual practices and ritual ceremonies. There are references to aromatic unguents creams, salves and extractions in our oldest texts, both religious and scientific. These aromatic waxes and unguents were used in Religious ceremonies, to anoint the body before burial, to heal wounds and to perfume the body. But the true distillation of essential oil wasn’t invented until around the 10th century in Persia. But what are Essential oils? By definition, essential oils are the volatile, hydrophobic, highly concentrated extracts from fruits, seeds, roots and flowers of plants. Most essential oils are obtained through distillation, although some, like orange lemon and lime, are cold pressed from the peel of the fruit. Because they are hydrophobic, essential oils are insoluble in water. It is very simple and beneficial to live an aromatherapy-based life. Making simple changes such as purchasing pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances or using natural ingredient body products rather than mineral oil-based products can have a profound impact on our personal wellbeing. As a general rule, most oils are relatively inexpensive and, when used properly, safe for use around most anyone. But where to begin. Many times new users think that it’s difficult to get started using essential oils or Aromatherapy, or become frustrated with the lack of safety information. As a general rule, it is easiest to incorporate essential oils into your life in the following ways: Diffusion: Aromatherapy diffusers offer a very safe and easy method of bringing essential oils into your home or office. Diffusion is one of the easiest and most effective ways to add Essential oils to your environment. Nebulizing diffusers, which disperse the essential oils into 18

the air without any additives, are the most efficient way to diffuse essential oils, and use no heat. Diffusers can be used anytime you need to freshen or clean the air, or just for a pick-meup. Inhalation: By far the safest, and simplest application of essential oils is simply to stop and inhale them. A drop or two of your favorite oil can be added to a tissue, cotton pad, or aromatherapy jewelry so that it is available to you anytime and anyplace. Not just for uplifting, but great for cold and flu season as well, since inhalation of essential oils is just as effective as a topical application for helping to boost the immune system and help keep the germs at bay. Massage: Adding Essential oils to a regular massage not only smells great, but provides you with the additional therapeutic benefits of the oil. Certain essential oils like Marjoram and Eucalyptus are excellent in deep tissue massage, as they can assist in helping relax tight muscles. Oils like Lavender and Sweet Orange are wonderful for relaxing and uplifting the spirits. Baths: Aromatic Baths are a wonderfully luxurious way to relax and pamper yourself after a long day. When used in a bath, essential oils must be mixed with an emulsifier like milk, honey or coconut oil. Simply adding 6-8 drops of essential oil to a cup of milk and then to the bath provides a wonderful boost to our respiratory system, eases stress and nervous tension, aids with insomnia and eases menstrual pain and muscle ache. Lavender, Chamomile and Spearmint are wonderful oils to add to a bath for relaxation, too soothe jangled nerves, and provide a sense of peace and happiness. It is of utmost importance that you educate yourself before getting started with essential oils. Although they are generally recognized as safe when used appropriately, certain oils can also be very irritating or sensitizing to the skin, and must be used with caution. Unless under the care of a qualified Medical Professional, essential oils should never be taken internally. Take the time to learn about essential oils and bring them into your life, and you too will see that Aromatherapy just makes Scents! by Suzy Woollam The Scenter of Town

SPOTSYLVANIA A GREAT VACATION SPOT! Spotsylvania County’s wonderfully diverse attractions are conveniently located between Richmond, VA, and Washington, D.C, along Interstate 95. The Visitor Center at I-95 exit #126 is open 7 days per week. Several major military battles of the Civil War were fought in the County, and the National Park Service (NPS) and other public and private supporters have respectfully preserved over 8,000 acres for quiet enjoyment. The NPS has a visitor center in the northwest portion of the County, where historians are available during the Summer to lead tours and assist visitors in learning about soldier and civilian experiences during the War. Leisurely kayak and canoe trips are available on the environmentally protected Rappahannock River, which runs along the northern edge of the County. Local wines and spirits can be found at Lake Anna Winery, Mattaponi Winery, A. Smith Bowman Distillery, and the Blue and Gray Brewery. All have tours, and are family owned and operated. The Spotsylvania Museum, located in the center of the County, depicts a wide range of historical periods, including Native American activities and the first Governor of Virginia -Alexander Spotswood -- who greatly influenced the lives of ordinary citizens in the early 1700’s. The Museum provides maps for self-guided tours of nearby battlefields and the historic Spotsylvania Courthouse area (one block away). The John J. Wright Museum and Cultural Center will let you explore the history of Civil Rights in Spotsylvania. At the south border of the County is the extensive Lake Anna recreation area, where all forms of resort and water activities are available. Text by Emily Taggart Schricker Research by the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. Marker Committee The area of Caroline Street between Fauquier and Canal Streets was once identified as outside the Town of Fredericksburg—but this was long ago when families with names such as Washington and Lewis were purchasing large pieces of land. The neighborhood continued to house prominent citizens such as City Council members, community leaders, and notable business people through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and even today in the twenty-first century. Charles Washington, brother of first President George, lived in what would later become the Rising Sun Tavern, or as the Virginia Herald identified it, “the Sign of the Rising Sun.” Previously, it was under the sign of the Golden Eagle (AKA The Golden Eagle Tavern or later The Eagle Tavern) and was run by a variety of innkeepers, including two different widows who took up the business after their husbands passed away. Visitors today can still see the Rising Sun Tavern (1304 Caroline Street) as it would have operated in the eighteenth century. The homes found along the 1300 to 1600 blocks of Caroline Street are a variety of grand, stately buildings. Today, the three homes found near the southwest corner of Canal and Caroline Streets are similar in appearance and were even more so when they were built in 1898. Originally all belonging to one owner, they were passed on to heirs and later sold to various owners. Each building has taken on its own personality while

retaining enough historic character to allow passersby to appreciate the notable streetscape. Larger homes closer to the river sit on land once witness to Federal soldiers crossing the Rappahannock River and violent attacks during the Civil War, but now offer gorgeous riverfront views and a memorable historic landscape for all to enjoy. To learn more about this interesting area of Fredericksburg and these beautiful houses, come to the 2014 Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. Holiday Candlelight Tour, Saturday and Sunday, December 13–14. If you are reading this after the event, please stop by the Lewis Store at 1200 Caroline Street to pick up a free copy of our 2014 Tour Guidebook (while supplies last).

A very special thank you to the HFFI Marker Committee for sharing their outstanding research to produce this article. For more information about receiving an HFFI Marker Report on your historic property, please visit www.HFFI.org/markerprogram.html 21

Fredericksburg Area Service League Fredericksburg Area Service League is an organization of women dedicated to helping children in Fredericksburg and its surrounding counties through financial and volunteer support. Since 1993, the mission of FASL has been to improve and enrich the lives of children in the Fredericksburg Area. To-date, the league has donated over $650,000 to the community and has provided food, shelter, care, education, and opportunities to children and families in need. FASL gives thousands of volunteer hours each year, and our membership is the key to making this possible. When our membership grows, we are able to fill more volunteer spaces and support more programs by ensuring they have the manpower to run smoothly. By working collectively we make a bigger impact with our time and donations. It is truly rewarding to meet the children we are able to help, and get to know the organizations working hard to make a difference for them. As well as volunteering, league members pledge to support organizations financially. Our Signature programs include Summer Scholars, Project in a Day/The Great Train Race, Books in Hand, College Scholarships, Salvation Army- Bell Ringing and Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The College Scholarship Program gives five $1,000 scholarships to local graduating high school seniors. Summer Scholars sends disadvantaged, high-achieving middle school students to an arts, science, or technology summer camp. For the Books in Hand program, we collect, inscribe and distribute books to underprivileged children as well as read to local elementary students at numerous Spotsylvania County schools. In addition to our Signature programs, the league also provides financial assistance to various local organizations, which in turn helps children in the Fredericksburg area. We currently support eight organizations including; Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg Regional Head Start, 34

Service Dogs of Virginia, Rappahannock Refuge, Inc. Hope House, Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters, Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, Fairy Godmother Project, and the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. To fulfill our financial obligations we host Fundraising Events throughout the year. One of our biggest and most recognized events is Merry Market. Merry Market is a weekend boutique shopping experience offering unique and affordable gifts including jewelry, clothes, accessories, gourmet food, wine, scents, photography, art, and much more. The three day event begins on Friday, November 21st with Jingle Bell Cocktail, a preview party. This is a ticket only event where ladies get an exclusive first look at our artisans and vendors while enjoying wine tastings and hors d'douerves. JBC offers a silent auction featuring fabulous gift baskets donated by local companies. In the fall, Junior Cotillion classes teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade students interactive instruction on basic etiquette and ballroom dance. The program teaches middle school children how to treat others with dignity, grace and respect for better relationships with family, friends and associates. The course includes the Holly Ball, a semi-formal dinner dance with parents, and a formal dinner dance for the students. Our third event, Bids Helping Kids is held in the spring. BHK's is a collaboration of donations from organizations and members, which are presented at auction for guests to bid on. There is a silent auction and a live auction for larger items. Last year, baskets ranged from beauty products, photography packages, to vacation getaways. The league is touched by the donations given to make this a success! Wilderness Battlefield May 5-6, 1864 This conflict introduced Union General, U.S. Grant to Lee in battle. Even though the battle ended in a stalemate, Grant pressed southward, “On to Richmond”

Chancellorsville Battlefield April 27 - May 6, 1863 Action in the battle included a spectacular military maneuver by Lee and his most trusted subordinate, Stonewall Jackson; but the day ended in calamity when Jackson was fatally wounded by his own troops.

Spotsylvania Battlefield May 8-21, 1864 On the most direct route to Richmond, lay the crossroads at Spotsylvania Court House, where warring troops engaged for 2 weeks, including 20 hours on May 12 in the most intense hand-to-hand fighting of the war at the “Bloody Angle”. 42

Spotsylvania & Stafford

Stafford Civil War Park 400 Mount Hope Church Rd, Stafford (not shown on map) Opened in April 2013 and is the site of 1863 winter encampments and fortifications of the Union Army’s 11th Corps, 1st and 3rd Divisions, following the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg Battlefield December 11-15, 1862 Called Lee’s most one-sided victory, the Battle of Fredericksburg focused on the Stone Wall at Marye’s Heights.

43

By the opening campaign in the spring of 1864, twenty-one year old Benjamin A. Merrill was a veteran soldier and had reenlisted in one of Massachusetts’ four Veteran Infantry Regiments, the 59th. Merrill had previously served nine months with the 50th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, but saw relatively little action while that unit served in Louisiana. After a six month rest, Merrill’s reenlistment fated he would be more heavily engaged in combat. The eastern theater was heating up as spring blossomed in the Virginia Wilderness, and after less than two weeks since leaving Massachusetts, the 59th was fighting in the thick of it on May 6. Attached to the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of Burnside’s “Independent” IX Corps, the regiment reached the Spotsylvania Courthouse area on May 9th, but was initially not heavily engaged. Three days later, while the Army of the Potomac boldly attempted to penetrate and cripple the Confederate forces within the “Muleshoe Salient”, the IX Corps was tasked with a diversionary thrust at the Confederate right, north of the Courthouse Road. 44

Merrill did not emerge from that action on the 12th, and was reported killed, but the nature and region of his wound was not stated in the official army Certificate of Death. His body was either never recovered or he was buried as an unknown. His photograph, from this author’s private collection, was taken by the Lane Studio in Haverhill, Massachusetts, seven miles northwest of Merrill’s hometown of Georgetown, both in Essex County. Sadly, the existing census and military records tell us very little of Benjamin A. Merrill’s life other than he was a shoe maker and had been living with his parents and siblings before entering the service. According to the Company Muster-in and Descriptive Roll, we learn that Benjamin stood five feet, eleven inches tall, had black eyes, dark hair and was of dark complexion. Even his photographer remains a mystery as of this writing, with no further information turning up in available archives. The photograph itself had been acquired, like so many others are these days, from an internet auction, a small remnant of what was in all probability someone’s family album. Whether it was from Merrill’s immediate family or perhaps that of a friend, it bears his

signature in period ink on the reverse. Annotated in pencil beneath the signature is the note, “Killed on battle field in Civil War”. Judging by the lack of a printed border around the pasted image, it could be surmised that this was taken in the summer of 1862 prior to Benjamin’s first term of service with the 50th Regiment, when he would have been around nineteen. Here we see the fresh faced youth, a far cry from the visage that would enter combat that day, sunburned, and dirt smudged from over a week of continuous marching, fighting and digging in. In over two weeks of fighting around Spotsylvania Courthouse, well over 30,000 men would become casualties, killed, wounded, missing, and captured. Today, the place where Merrill fell is an obscure section of woods off of the National Park’s Burnside Drive, unmarked, yet preserved within the NPS boundaries. John Cummings is a visual historian and the author of two books on the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania region. He provides battlefield guide services and research assistance to visitors. He has also written for several national and

local magazines and newspapers, and provided historical research and commentary for four documentary films. He served on the former Spotsylvania Courthouse Tourism and Special Events Commission, and is the chairperson for the Friends of the Fredericksburg Area Battlefields, (FoFAB). In February 2011, he became the co-founder of the reactivated 23rd Regiment, United States Colored Troops. Contact information is available on his blog at: http://spotsylvaniacw.blogspot.com/ 45

Natural There is always much heated debate on whether you should choose USDA Certified Organic Foods or local foods that may not be certified. For my family, we have been able to maintain a good monthly food budget by looking at more local producers that we are familiar with and know what is or is not done to the foods as they grow. This way, we are not paying the premium for certified organic, but are still getting quality foods for our families. 48

TAJ INDIAN CUISINE At Taj Indian Cuisine, our customers are treated to North Indian style cooking, prepared from a selection of Mughlai recipes. Mughlai dishes originated in the 16th Century and were specifically prepared for the Moghul Emperors with the influence of Muslim cooking. The history quality and rich tastes earned it the name ‘Mughlai’, which translates to ‘Royal’ in Hindi. Mughlai

cuisinary includes the spicy Muslim influenced Korma dishes, the savoury Tandoori’s, and the popular Bhuna dishes that are served piping hot. At Taj Indian Cuisine, our style of cooking is based on authentic recipes that were handed down from generation to generation. What makes our food special is the pride we take in our preparation by freshly grinding our spices and using a well measurement for each dish. We stand apart from our competitors by eschewing the use of preservatives, preparing each dish afresh. Our goal is to provide more variety and introduce new designer recipes for customers to sample. We blend history, good dining, and customer service to make each visit as enjoyable as we can. We thank you, the customer, for choosing Taj Indian Cuisine.

It's the Season to Wine! by Pamela Coopwood

It is beginning to look a lot like...well, a lot of things! It's the season for masquerades, family dinners, house parties, festivals, gifts, entertaining guest, business gatherings and lots of wine! According to Cultural Savvy, "wine is often the beverage of choice at a dinner party, yet frequently the host, as well as the guests, do not have a basic knowledge of wine etiquette & protocol." It is suggested that proper wine handling goes beyond just drinking; it involves the entire gamut of the five senses. A well honed wine connoisseur prides himself on not only knowing how the taste is involved, but also engaging the ears as the first participant in vineyard bliss! The eyes should behold a certain sparkle, color (red: maroon, purple, ruby, brownish; white: clear, pale yellow, straw-like, light green, etc.) and clarity of the liquid in the glass as the nose revels in a burst of flavors and aromas as the wine is swirled in the glass. Salivation occurs in anticipation of the delicious experience in the mouth as sensory perception interprets the feel of the wine on the palate...weight (light or full-bodied), degrees of tannins (dry or sweet), character (citrus or spice), aging methods (oak or steel), smoothness of finish (long or short) and the like. Hopefully, the coming months offer many occasions to perfect the art of wine tasting! Here are a few points of protocol that will make even a novice appear cleverly practiced! If you are dining in a restaurant, dining etiquette dictates that the person who orders the bottle, examines and approves the vintage prior to it being poured for the table. First, always check the label to be certain you have received the right bottle (and vintage YEAR!). Next, trust the Sommelier (trained

wine expert) to have properly prepared the wine, i.e., most reds need to breathe (oxygen releases the aroma!) before being presented to the table, and all should be presented with the cork, even if decanted. With practiced ease, feel the cork for moisture. A dry cork may indicate improper storage which will affect the taste! Next, smell the cork for an aroma of vinegar and if detected...like bad milk, reject this bottle! Swirl the wine in the glass (without sloshing!) about 10-12 seconds to allow any alcohol to evaporate and then stick your nose in and smell the bouquet (oak, berries, fruit etc). A wine's aroma is an excellent indicator of its quality and unique characteristics which indicates its quality! While the first sip belongs the host/hostess for approval, the first full pour should be for the guests. The host/hostess is served last amidst compliments to their great selection! If you are hosting a party in your home, you assume the role of the Sommelier! Wine selection should not be random or a last minute thought. While the rules are varied on white versus red and sweet versus dry, it is more important that you are aware of the experience you are offering to your guests! As a guest, always compliment your host/hostess on the wine selection even if it is not your ideal choice. It is okay to refuse more wine. In restaurants, simply place your hand over the top of the glass to indicate refusal. If you are at a private affair, politely say, "no thank you". No excuse is needed in either case; but, if asked, restrict your reasons to a personal or private preference rather than the host/hostess's choice in beverage selections. If you should receive wine as a gift and you are certain you will never use or open it, this is a matter of privacy as well. Wine gifts, unlike the legendary Fruit Cakes, can always find a happy home through regifting! Later, if asked, simply state that you had the wonderful pleasure of sharing the gift and you were overjoyed that you had something of such great quality to offer!
