SPOTSYLVANIA A GREAT VACATION SPOT! Spotsylvania County’s wonderfully diverse attractions are conveniently located between Richmond, VA, and Washington, D.C, along Interstate 95. The Visitor Center at I-95 exit #126 is open 7 days per week. Several major military battles of the Civil War were fought in the County, and The National Park Service (NPS) and other public and private supporters have respectfully preserved over 8,000 acres for quiet enjoyment. The NPS has a visitor center in the northwest portion of the County, where historians are available during the Summer to lead tours and assist visitors in learning about soldier and civilian experiences during the War. Experience the 26 mile long 208 Sale Trail in September. Local wines and spirits can be found at Lake Anna Winery, Mattaponi Winery, Wilderness Run Vineyards, Maltese Brewing Co., A. Smith Bowman Distillery, and the Blue and Gray Brewery. All have tours, and are family owned and operated. The Spotsylvania Museum, located in the center of the County, depicts a wide range of historical periods, including Native American activities and the first Governor of Virginia -Alexander Spotswood -- who greatly influenced the lives of ordinary citizens in the early 1700’s. The Museum provides maps for self-guided tours of nearby battlefields and the historic Spotsylvania Courthouse area (one block away). The John J. Wright Museum and Cultural Center will let you explore the history of Civil Rights in Spotsylvania.

Washington Heritage Museums Whether visiting from across the country, or around the corner, the Washington Heritage Museums are must see stops in Fredericksburg. Each museum is connected to the Washington family, and help illustrate the story of 18th century life in Fredericksburg and a budding nation. The Mary Washington House is the final home of Mary Ball Washington. She spent the last seventeen years of her life in this home, purchased for her by her son George Washington. He bought the house and land at Charles and Lewis Streets, adding additional rooms to make a “commodious home” for his mother. She moved from Ferry Farm in Stafford County, where she raised her children and managed the farm as a widow. In the city, she could be closer to her daughter, Betty Lewis, who lived at Kenmore. Visitors can see her “best dressing glass”, that she willed to George, and her teapot. Currently there is an exhibit detailing the saving of the Mary Washington House in 1890 by a dedicated group of local women. They saved the house from being sold, dismantled, and shipped to Chicago for the Columbian Exposition. The exhibit also highlights preservation efforts at the Mary Washington House since that time. The Rising Sun Tavern on Caroline Street is sure to entertain visitors of all ages. Built as the residence of G e o r g e Wa s h i n g t o n ’s brother, Charles in 1760, it became a tavern in 1792. The Wallace family transformed the home into a tavern, as it remained for 35 years. The Rising Sun was a “proper tavern” serving as a stopover for travelers in the bustling port town of Fredericksburg. Visitors learn about 18th century class structure, manners, sayings, and tavern life from “indentured servants and tavern wenches.”

Brigadier General Hugh Mercer served under George Washington. While a doctor in Fredericksburg, he treated Mary Washington. The Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop at the corner of Caroline and Amelia Streets portrays his medical office. Visitors learn of treatments of the day in an immersive first person tour. A recent addition to the collection is a letter from George Weedon, who adopted Hugh Mercer’s son, to Charles Willson Peale. The letter discusses the artistic training of Mercer’s son by Peale, a prominent artist of the time. Washington Heritage Museums acquired the sites in 2013 from Preservation Virginia by deed of gift. This new organization, with old roots, is dedicated to preserving the museums for generations to come. In the last two and a half years, local residents formed the 501(c)(3), organized its bylaws and structure, and hired the first executive director. New events, aimed at engaging public interest, have included the familyfriendly event “County Fair,” events focused on the Revolutionary War hero Hugh Mercer, and a beer tasting based on Mary Washington’s gingerbread recipe. Each October, Washington Heritage Museums highlights breast cancer awareness at the home of Mary Washington, who died of breast cancer. “Tie One On” is a beautiful month-long event, during which members, visitors, and friends may tie pink ribbons on the fence of the Mary Washington House to honor or remember someone who has battled breast cancer. The fence, bedecked with pink ribbons, serves as a visual reminder of the impact of the disease. This coming September, Washington Heritage Museums will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the saving of the Mary Washington House. The event, being held on September 12th, will be an evening fundraising event honoring efforts throughout the years to preserve the Mary Washington House. Because the Washington Heritage Museums receive no state or federal funding, donations are very important to ongoing preservation efforts.

Fredericksburg Area Service League Fredericksburg Area Service League (FASL) is an organization of women dedicated to helping children in Fredericksburg and its surrounding counties through financial and volunteer support. Since 1993, the mission of FASL has been to improve and enrich the lives of children in the Fredericksburg area. To-date, the league has donated over $700,000 to the community and has provided food, shelter, care, education, and opportunities to children and families in need. In addition to volunteering thousands of hours each year, league members pledge to financially support various local children’s organizations. To fulfill our financial obligations we host fundraising events throughout the year. One of our most beloved fundraisers is Junior Cotillion of Fredericksburg. Junior Cotillion of Fredericksburg is one of Fredericksburg Area Service League’s oldest programs offering basic instruction in etiquette and ballroom dance for middle school children in sixth through eighth grade. Junior Cotillion teaches children how to treat others with dignity, grace, and respect for better relationships with family, friends, and associates. The six-class course which begins September 27, 2015 includes four two hour classes and two dances. The first dance is the Holly Ball, which is an opportunity for students to share what they have learned with a parent or other adult. The course also includes a formal dinner dance at the Fredericksburg Country Club, where students are able to practice everything they have learned at a four-course dinner and dance. Classes and the Holly Ball are held at Strictly Ballroom Dance Studio. The studio is owned by Michael and Melissa Scott, who have years of experience teaching dance to children and love to share the benefits of dancing by providing a family-oriented, positive, and knowledgeable atmosphere.

During Junior Cotillion, students are instructed in the basics of traditional ballroom dance, allowing them to interact with people and learn a life-long skill. The other half of each class is comprised of etiquette instruction which takes place in a small group setting. This allows students plenty of individual attention and hands-on experience to practice what they are learning each week. Junior Cotillion teaches students skills that will be valuable in daily interactions with peers and adults and will be useful when attending social events and in the workforce. Instructors will also offer guidance on netiquette and internet safety. Students can register online at: www.faserviceleague.com/events.html or by contacting Kate Crowder at mannersmatterva@gmail.com. The class is $225 per student with a $35 deposit due upon registration and the remainder due before the first class. Junior Cotillion is a FASL fundraising event and all profits benefit local children’s charities.

CONFEDERATE RIDGE ANIMAL HOSPITAL Finding a good veterinarian for Henry was one of my main thoughts, when I moved to Fredericksburg. He is a Great Dane German Shepard cross; floppy eared, long table clearing tail, and 160 pounds of love. I had asked the few people I knew, and one of them said, “take him to Confederate Ridge. So I called and asked if Henry and I could stop by sometime to see how far they are and if I felt comfortable. So one day we loaded up (that is what you do with a 160 pound dog) followed the directions the receptionist gave me, and I was impressed. It was very centrally located from no matter where you lived around here. We walked around the outside a bit, I didn't want Henry to embarrass me on our first visit because where Henry goes nothing grows. We went inside and I found a seat. Henry and I sat quietly and observed other clients coming and going - some people just picked up food and medicine, others were there for pet

appointments. When it was calm, we walked up to the desk, Henry put his paws up on the high desk and looked at the little girl right in the eye, then licked her chin. She gave him a treat. Well, needless to say, we made an appointment for a check up. A few weeks later when we arrived, he seemed to be right at home. He knew the yard is where he is do his business before we go inside, just like at home. He knew the right door to go, then it was time to look for the lady with the treats. He bolted for the desk and she was ready for him, treat in hand. Henry sailed through his check up, thinking the entire staff is only there to give him pats and treats. That was almost 30 years ago. My beloved Henry has long been gone from my side but will live in my heart forever and so will Confederate Ridge Animal Hospital. Now I work there and invite you and your pet to experience what a treat an animal hospital should be.

Chatham Manor is a magnificent 18thcentury home overlooking the city of Fredericksburg. Open to the public as part of the National Park Service, visitors are welcome to experience this historic estate. Originally the home of William Fitzhugh, a representative in the House of Burgesses alongside George Washington, Chatham was built in 1771 and named after William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, a leading voice for the American colonies’ interests prior to the Revolution. Fitzhugh designed Chatham to reflect distinction and taste. The Georgian style home is made of richly colored brick with evenly spaced windows stretching down the length of its symmetrical façade. The property originally totaled 1,280 acres with many outbuildings including barns, stables, an orchard, a mill, and more. Events and connections brought many visitors to Chatham. George Washington visited when travelling or seeing family. Washington was not the only President to visit Chatham. Thomas Jefferson jotted down this note on October 27, 1793, “Ferriage, etc. Chatham $.25,” evidence that Jefferson also visited the Fitzhugh’s at Chatham. Soon, the Civil War would visit Chatham too. During the war the estate served as headquarters and hospital. Chatham offered a clear view and a central location. Abraham Lincoln visited Chatham on May 23, 1862 to discuss military 42

strategy, adding himself to the list of presidential guests. In December 1862, during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Chatham became a military hospital operated by brave surgeons and volunteers including poet Walt Whitman. Whitman wrote a vivid account depicting Chatham’s state of disarray at the time of the Civil War. The building began to show wear and more than a hundred soldiers were buried on the grounds – they have since been relocated. The Devore family bought and renovated the home in the 1920s. Industrial magnate John Lee Pratt purchased Chatham from the Devore’s in 1931 and willed it to the National Park Service in 1975. Today, Chatham is open to the public and is constantly adding more notable names, like yours, to its guest list. Visitors to Chatham can tour the majestic building, walk the charming gardens, and stand where Walt Whitman stood to discover the best view of Fredericksburg the area has to offer. Maultaschen, a German-style Ravioli Filled w/ Braised Pork Shank, in Asparagus Broth & Topped w/ Fresh Parmesan About The Bavarian Chef The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg brings hearty German fare and warm hospitality to the historic railroad station in Old Town Fredericksburg. Owned and operated by the Thalwitz family, The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg captures the German spirit of Gemütlichkeit. All food is prepared fresh on site from Thalwitz family recipes. When Eckhard and Bruni Thalwitz opened the first Bavarian Chef in Madison, Virginia, in 1974, it quickly became a local favorite, renowned for its incredible portions of authentic German cuisine and genuine hospitality. Their son Jerome has owned and operated the Madison restaurant since 1987 and is its executive chef. In May 2010, Jerome and Christine Thalwitz opened The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg at the train station in downtown Fredericksburg. In the heyday of rail travel in Germany, the restaurants in the bahnhofs, or train stations, were a gathering place for the community, where long-time residents, newcomers and visitors alike could enjoy a delicious meal and the company of good friends. Whether you choose to visit Madison, the “country cousin”, or Fredericksburg, “the city sister”, the Thalwitz family hopes to serve you soon! Review The pasta course of the evening was at The Bavarian Chef. We were served Maultaschen, a German-style ravioli filled w/ braised pork shank, in asparagus broth & topped w/ fresh Parmesan.
