Along the way, runners pass significant landmarks dating back to our nation’s beginnings and notable neighborhoods that were home to America’s forefathers, including Presidents George Washington and James Monroe. Without question, the most exacting segment of the 13.1 mile run is the steady 200 foot rise in elevation that occurs over a span of one mile late in the course. Hospital Hill has become a thing of legend. Locals know about the hill located adjacent to Mary Washington Healthcare, and out-of-towners soon learn from social media connections or by scoping out the course elevation chart that an arduous uphill challenge awaits between miles 10 and 11 of the course. Conquer the hill and celebrate! The Historic Half boasts fantastic finisher medals, terrific technical participant shirts and the only start ceremony capped off by the shouts of a town crier and the blast of a vintage musket. This May, the 75-voice, audition-only Rappahannock Choral Society (RCS) is dedicating its Mother’s Day Concerts to a remembrance of life on the home front during the Second World War. Included in the program will be many of the tunes we heard, sang and danced to in the early 40s. We’ll be jumpin’, jivin’ and swooning to melodies of the big bands, as well as crooners and group hit songs … all as we recall the real life memories of people who lived and worked at home during that time. Join us as we remember the sacrifices that were made at home in support of our troops overseas. The RCS is under the award-winning artistic direction of Linda Monner with the incomparable accompaniment of Marilla Haas. Tickets to this concert by this very talented and professional chorus are available at the door – $8 for regular admission, $5 for seniors (60+) and children and students attend free. Give the gift of music and bring the whole family on Saturday, May 9th, at 8:00 p.m. or Sunday, May 10th, at 3:00 p.m. to Chancellor High School, located at 6300 Harrison Road in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Visit our website at www.rappahannock-choral-society.org for more information and a map to the school. This concert is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Rappahannock Choral Society, Inc., is a non-profit corporation in partnership with Spotsylvania Parks and Recreation, a Partner in Education with Spotsylvania County Schools, a Partner in Community Service with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Department, and a member of the Arts and Cultural Council of the Rappahannock. Come out on Mother’s Day weekend and share in the Rappahannock Choral Society’s commemorative spring concert with “Great Music … Close to Home!” 15

Local wines and spirits can be found at Lake Anna Winery, Mattaponi Winery, A. Smith Bowman Distillery, and the Blue and Gray Brewery. All have tours, and are family owned and operated. Fredericksburg Area Service League Fredericksburg Area Service League is an organization of women dedicated to helping children in Fredericksburg and its surrounding counties through financial and volunteer support. Since 1993, the mission of FASL has been to improve and enrich the lives of children in the Fredericksburg Area. To-date, the league has donated over $650,000 to the community and has provided food, shelter, care, education, and opportunities to children and families in need. FASL gives thousands of volunteer hours each year, and our membership is the key to making this possible. When our membership grows, we are able to fill more volunteer spaces and support more programs by ensuring they have the manpower to run smoothly. By working collectively we make a bigger impact with our time and donations. It is truly rewarding to meet the children we are able to help, and get to know the organizations working hard to make a difference for them. As well as volunteering, league members pledge to support organizations financially. Our Signature programs include Summer Scholars, Project in a Day/The Great Train Race, Books in Hand, College Scholarships, Salvation Army- Bell Ringing and Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The College Scholarship Program gives five $1,000 scholarships to local graduating high school seniors. Summer Scholars sends disadvantaged, high-achieving middle school students to an arts, science, or technology summer camp. For the Books in Hand program, we collect, inscribe and distribute books to underprivileged children as well as read to local elementary students at numerous Spotsylvania County schools. In addition to our Signature programs, the league also provides financial assistance to various local organizations, which in turn helps children in the Fredericksburg area. We currently support eight organizations including; Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg Regional Head Start, 30

Service Dogs of Virginia, Rappahannock Refuge, Inc. Hope House, Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters, Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, Fairy Godmother Project, and the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. To fulfill our financial obligations we host Fundraising Events throughout the year. One of our biggest and most recognized events is Merry Market. Merry Market is a weekend boutique shopping experience offering unique and affordable gifts including jewelry, clothes, accessories, gourmet food, wine, scents, photography, art, and much more. The three day event begins on Friday, November 21st with Jingle Bell Cocktail, a preview party. This is a ticket only event where ladies get an exclusive first look at our artisans and vendors while enjoying wine tastings and hors d'douerves. JBC offers a silent auction featuring fabulous gift baskets donated by local companies. In the fall, Junior Cotillion classes teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade students interactive instruction on basic etiquette and ballroom dance. The program teaches middle school children how to treat others with dignity, grace and respect for better relationships with family, friends and associates. The course includes the Holly Ball, a semi-formal dinner dance with parents, and a formal dinner dance for the students. Our third event, Bids Helping Kids is held in the spring. BHK's is a collaboration of donations from organizations and members, which are presented at auction for guests to bid on. There is a silent auction and a live auction for larger items. Last year, baskets ranged from beauty products, photography packages, to vacation getaways. The league is touched by the donations given to make this a success! Tax Season Tips Written by: Susan E. Davenport

Tax season is a stressful time for most people. The first question most people have is,“Do I need to file?” In most cases, the amount of your income, your filing status and your age determine if you must file a tax return. For example, if you’re single and 28 years old you must file if your income was at least $10,150. Other rules may apply if you’re self-employed or if you’re a dependent of another person. When in doubt, ask a tax professional or visit IRS.Gov/filing. If you purchased health coverage from the Marketplace in 2014 and chose to have advance payments of the premium tax credit sent directly to your insurer during the year you, YOU MUST FILE A FEDERAL TAX RETURN. Of course, determining that you don’t need to file is a huge weight off your shoulders! The next step in managing the stress is to be organized in your record keeping. Know what is needed and track costs throughout the year, don’t let them pile up. This is an essential tip for small business 34

owners. Know which documents are necessary and which aren’t. You know that you need to bring your income documents (W-2 or 1099’s), but would you think to bring your end of year bank statement to show the total interest that you were paid? If you have a home office and you want to take deductions, you need to provide the dimensions of both your office and your home/apartment in square feet. You would need to provide the totals you spent on utilities and insurance. Most utility companies will provide an annual summary on the last bill of the year. Robert Kishpaugh, who started his fledgling printing business in 1894 at the age of 15, operated that enterprise and a popular stationery store in town for nearly seventy years. Besides postcards, he produced a large array of tourism oriented souvenir booklets and maps. He died at his home on April 20, 1965 at the age of 86. Today, collectors of postcards can find a ready supply on the EBay auction site or at collectibles shows across the country. Bust my britches...a letter! Little Changes That'll Make a Big Difference With Your Business Protocol Recently, I came across an antiquity and was so shocked and amazed that I stopped everything I was doing and relived a moment. It was a hand written letter! It wasn't a highly personal or romantic writing, but rather a thank you from a company in which I had transacted many hours of business and their response was a handwritten letter of thanks. It felt so odd to be reading a business correspondence written in ink by a real person. It didn't even matter that it was probably a form letter repeated hundreds of times by a member of the secretarial pool. What mattered was that in this current time, one rarely, if ever receives anything by mail that requires thought and shows the human side of our culture...even sympathy cards are electronic. The letter caused me to remember why I frequented their establishment in the first place. They certainly weren't the least expensive, the closest or even the one with the best Black Friday specials. But rather, they were the ones whose employees understood the value of good customer relationships. They introduced themselves properly and shook my hand while doing so; they answered the telephone like they were expecting my call; they were able to engage in more conversation than the banalities of the weather and most importantly, they remembered my name. I felt welcomed and cherished and this I rewarded with loyalty. In a day when answering machines are designed to mimic human interaction, it is easy to forget the basics of being respectful, polite and well, even human! And while I don't think we will ever return to the time of hand written correspondence (oh, the thought of cursive writing!) I do think we can make the world a nicer place by remembering a few rules of basic business protocol...the expected and accepted manner of behavior in a civil society! 1. Mind your handshake technique. We have all been turned off and even judged if we shake hands with a wet noodle or a bone crusher or even a pumper. Approach with confidence. Stick your hand out there, go web to web, up down up and release. It's a greeting that is taken for granted but if done correctly makes a huge statement about your professional presence. 2. Make eye contact. Hey!...remember me, the one standing in front of you! Glancing around the room or checking to see if your shoes are shined is most impolite during a conversation. It conveys disinterest, shifty motives and may give the impression that you are not to be taken seriously. 3. Introductions should be brief and not so personal that the other person squirms and beats a hasty retreat. Keep business, business. 4. Smile when you answer the telephone. I am sure there is research on this, but your entire voice changes when you smile. A smiling hello echo's across in the airwaves in nanoseconds to the person's ear and may calm a raging customer or encourage a reluctant client. 5. Going out networking? Watch where you position yourself in the room. If you stand in the corner, you will appear shy and unapproachable. If you stand by the door, you may appear bored and disinterested. Stand near the center and use tips 1-4 above on a real person! Who knows, you may actual make a connection instead of just a contact. So maybe these seem like minor points that every professional has mastered. But knowing is not doing...and doing is a matter of consistently remembering that on the other end of every conversation or interaction is someone hopefully just like ourselves...human!

The Hamburger—a long treasured and constantly evolving culinary delight enjoyed across America, as well as here in the City of Fredericksburg. Burgers can remain simple with a few pickles to top it off or get more creative with a mushroom confit or delicious secret sauce. This meat on bread combination has a long history in Fredericksburg, back to when burger joints lined the path of US Route 1 (both through downtown and on the bypass). But it wasn’t the golden arches that residents and travelers flocked to; it was the unique, family-owned businesses that were popular and now hold their place in Fredericksburg’s twentieth-century history. When asking long-time residents where they purchased their burgers, the answer often comes up as one of three locations—Eddie Mack’s, The Hot Shoppes, or Hamburger Haven. Eddie Mack’s was located on Canal Street in the 1940s through the 1960s, near the current Dorothy Hart Community Center. Now a private residence, mere mention of the building brings up stories of high school students sneaking out for lunch and lively after-school meet-ups. The Hot Shoppes was located on the Route 1 Bypass near the Fall Hill Avenue intersection. While some remember Sunday trips to this restaurant with their family, others recall a more spirited reason for visiting the location. High school students entertained themselves by cruising the parking lot at

night with the occasional meet-up for races down the, then wide-open, road of Route 3. But what about now? How can these burgers of days gone by be enjoyed today? One option is Hamburger Haven— originally located at 1915 Princess Anne Street in front of the Princess Anne Bowling Center. The family of the original owner has recently reopened the restaurant using the family recipes, some original suppliers, and old-fashioned, family-business work ethics. Hamburger Haven is now located inside the Gulf gas station at 4300 Lafayette Boulevard, serving its original burger recipes as well as a variety of other family favorites, allowing guests to get a taste of Fredericksburg’s restaurant history. Or if you find yourself in downtown Fredericksburg on “Restaurant Row,” stop by Vivify Burger Lounge (314 William Street). With a menu full of burger creations and unique milkshakes, there’s a new, old-fashioned meal to fit every appetite. However you like your burger or wherever you prefer to eat it, it’s the company you keep and the memories you make while enjoying that burger that matter the most. Bon appétit! K9s For Warriors

One mission saving two lives.

MissiOn K9s For Warriors salvages the lives of post-9-11 veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by partnering them with professionally trained service canines to assist these warriors’ efforts to return to civilian life with dignity and independence. The dogs, principally rescued from shelters, are partnered with their Warrior for a life-long, life-saving bond. In so doing we save the life of a shelter animal as well as that of a traumatized veteran. Amongst post-911 veterans DoD estimates that 1-in-5 suffer from PTSD and that 1-in-6 will attempt suicide or have suicidal tendencies. Warriors suffering from PTSD tend to relive the fears and horror of combat and experience psychological disabilities, such as social avoidance, anxiety, emotional overload, depression, nightmares, and a general sense of foreboding; as well as an exaggerated response to sudden noises or other triggers. K9s For Warriors seeks to change all that, and the results have been remarkable: 152 veterans have been matched with service canines, with a 95% success rate – saving two lives at once. K9s for Warriors service dogs are trained to mitigate the symptoms of PTSD, helping the warrior to live a normal, healthy life. Whereas a pet may be able to tell if his warrior is in distress, a service dog is trained to respond and perform tasks to assist and lessen the distress. Examples include: safety checking a room before the warrior enters; blocking an unwanted person from advancing too close; reminding the warrior to take medicine; helping locate forgotten items, such as vehicle or wallet; forging ahead around a corner in front of the warrior; or licking, pawing or nudging the warrior during a nightmare. Service canines for post-traumatic stress are like seeing-eye dogs for the mind. AbOut K9s FOr WArriOrs • Founded in 2011; based in Jacksonville, Florida. • Comprises a single kennel & academy for boarding and training dogs that can accommodate a class of five Warriors at a time when they partner with

their K9. • Trainers are full-time professionals with military and police K9 backgrounds. • Expanding in 2014 to accommodate a class of 16 Warriors at a time. • President: Shari Duval, whose son is a Veteran K9 Police Officer who worked as a contractor for the Department of the Army as a bomb dog handler. He served two tours in Iraq but returned home with PTSD, which inspired the founding of K9s for Warriors. Funding: • 501C(3) nonprofit; receives no government funding. All operations supported by donations. • 94% of donations are applied to directly support program operations. • Contributions are tax-deductible. WArriOr PrOgrAM/K9 AcAdeMy Our program includes a three week stay at the facility; Warriors come, meet, & train with their new dog. K9s for Warriors focuses on the recovery of the warrior. We can accommodate up to five Warriors a month, which includes monthly classes. • Dogs are rescued, boarded, and trained for 3-to-7 months then partnered with their Warrior. • Beneficiaries are post-9-11 veterans of combat operations in either Afghanistan or Iraq. • Warrior beneficiaries join their dogs during the final, partnering phase of training at the Academy in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. • 152 K9s & Warriors have been partnered to date. • It costs approximately $15,000 to train each dog. • All of the program’s K9s are shelter rescues; the dogs are custom matched and trained for the needs of their prospective Warrior partner. “When a Warrior arrives at our Academy, they arrive on two legs; they leave on six, with their new canine service partner. We have seen amazing results with our program, which motivates us to expand our program to help as many Veterans suffering from PTSD as we can.”

A. Smith Bowman Distillery Welcomes Home A New 500 Gallon Still Named George Fredericksburg, VIRGINIA (January 20, 2015) – A. Smith Bowman Distillery just welcomed home a brand new still, naming it George, after the father of the pioneering Bowman brothers. George, also known as still number 1965, found his place next to Mary, the existing whiskey still, on Thursday as the installation process began. Mary is named after Mary Hite Bowman, George’s wife, and the mother of the Bowman brothers. Designed to create more than just whiskey, the new still was custom made, with unique features chosen by Master Distiller Brian Prewitt that allow him the freedom to explore his passion for creating new and exciting expressions. George also enables A. Smith Bowman to craft spirits from start to finish. “We want to have the capability to try anything and everything, and with George, we should be able to do just that,” Prewitt said. “We’re excited to do some experimenting, try new things and continue to make great spirits here at A. Smith Bowman Distillery.” George is a 500 gallon hybrid pot still with a reflux onion, optional gin basket, and attached columns with bubble cap trays. These features allow Prewitt to create many different flavor profiles and a variety of spirits including vodka, gin, and whiskey. Standing at 24 feet tall with a pot that is approximately 1,700 pounds, George will weigh nearly four tons when full. While George allows the Distillery to pursue their passion for new expressions, current A. Smith Bowman spirits will continue to be crafted in their consistent method. George arrived at the Distillery after making his journey from Vendome Copper and Brass Works in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was built. Though George is now fully assembled, final connections are still in process before his inaugural distillation run. George is expected to be in full operation starting in March. 76
