The benches and planting surfaces in front of the power station have varied lengths and placement breaking up the concrete paving pattern. Together with the trees they create a space for contemplation. The white trunks

of the birch trees are lighting up the plaza. This is a space where many people can gather for occasional events such as outdoor movie screenings on the power station building.

Pictorial Meadow

One of the main challenges of the shifting identities concept was the power station itself. The intention is to revive it and to readjust it to its environment by opening up the ground floor and the roof of the building to let nature in, making it

White concrete pavers are used throughout the plaza and inside the power station to create consistency. Corten steel frames the planting areas that also have wooden seatings.

a part of a coherent landscape and not an isolated construction. Furthermore, new uses are added - restaurant, café, and retail - to make the area more livable. In the upper floors are the exhibitions of the Technical Museum.

HYBRID EDGE This typology combines the hard and natural edges as an interim state. The hard quay edge gives way to a natural landform that rises from the water. This creates a small natural niche that acts as place to sit in the grass or go down and put your feet in the water.

The visual shows the most urbanized area of the design, the urban plaza. It is the meeting and recreation space which can also function as an openair cinema. The entrances of the shops and cafe are situated inside of the power station creating the feeling that inside and outside spaces overlap.

A meadow with single trees surrounds the silo. Cork is used as a playground surface for its safety and minimal environmental impact. A bigger wooded path on the edge and a smaller gravel path north from the playground. Cobblestones are used around the edges in each area where water can run to.

The landscape identity is formed, reformed and transformed by local, regional, and global agendas throughout time and will change in the future. We are under a constant evolution, where elements belonging to different historical moments overlap and thereby changing the identity slowly. The landscape surrounding the power station has a clear industrial descent and the building should be seen as a cultural heritage that generates spaces of new use.

HARD EDGE The hard edge gives access for boats to line up. It also gives access for a new boardwalk around the edges that allows people to get closer to the harbour and see all the many boats taking up space on the docks.

MEADOW The meadow with a few trees to provide shade is blossoming from April until the frost comes. Outdoor activities here can be strolling through or taking a seat in the blossoming flowers and having a picnic.

The specific trees are chosen because of their aesthetic looks and their ever changing colour throughout the year. The red brick of the power station dominates the area, so two trees with red coloured leaves have been chosen to represent the same colour that also create a connection through the site. Betula trees dominate most of the plaza area and are placed along the pathways. It has a special white bark that peels off in thin flakes.

The planting intends to be adapted to future requirements over the next 50+ years. The trees will be able to handle both increased rainfall and more frequent heat waves. The young trees are planted in a four meter spaced grid. Through selective thinning, the grid will loosen over time, mimicing a natural growth pattern. New trees will be planted to maintain the volume and structure of the woodland. The dead trees in the woodland meadow will stay to create more animal life.

Pushing and pulling the edges of the shoreline, creating new niches and interfaces between land and water.

Opening up the power station structure to create new paths through the building and bring nature inside.

A new planting strategy and more variation of species gives the area a new identity and a new language.

The main element in this project is the shoreline, the power station and the vegetation that binds it all together.
