IT’S 2019, AND WE’VE GOT A BIT OF JUICY travel bits for the year straight from people from the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) that might just surprise you.

Travel, now a way of life PTAA president Marlene Dado Jante sees more people embracing travel as a way of life rather than luxury, thanks in large part to how affordable trips and how accessible information have become.

Camping and glamping

DIY trips are also becoming more and more popular, with online and offline data aiding you in customizing your trip, coupled with hostels and Airbnbs.

Camping is, well, camping. You get a sleeping bag or a tent, bring your own food, and find a place to sleep. Glamping, on the other hand, is camping leveled up. You’re outside in a tent, “exposed to the elements,” but with the creature comforts like a comfy bed.

Crystal Beach in Zambales offers camping and glamping; Pass Island in Coron offers camping; Tagaytay has a number of hotels offering glamping.

Sustainability is the way to go

CONTRARY TO WHAT THE INTERWEBS may have had you believe, the province of Capiz in Western Visayas was never the home of the notorious aswangs, mythical creatures said to eat humans. What it’s home to is an abundance of fresh seafood, clean surroundings, and a strong love for culture.

Heritage and Eco-Tourism rolled into one Want a beach near the city? You’ve got that in Baybay Beach, a coastline north of Roxas City and a couple of minutes outside Culasi Port. But something that people hardly talk about when visiting Capiz is Basiao Beach in Ivisan, home to sand that’s as fine as Boracay’s although not as white.

Pilgrimages are not uncommon in Capiz what with the province being home to the biggest Catholic church bell in Asia: Dakong Linganay, a 10.4-metric-ton tenor behemoth housed at the Santa Monica Parish Church’s bell tower.

Dive headfirst into ecotourism in Capiz at one of the province’s two eco parks: Capiz Ecology Park and Cultural Village in Cuartero, or in the city at Palina Greenbelt Ecopark, an ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Awardee for 2018.

Lastly, don’t forget to swing by the person who the City of Roxas was named after: former President Manuel A. Roxas. His ancestral home lies in the city proper, close to where a monument of his stands.

All from the sea A trip to the province of Capiz isn’t complete without stuffing yourself senseless in seafood.

Make sure you do not pass out on any of the country’s seafood capital’s seafood restaurants, especially the ones located along Baybay Beach.

If you can’t be bothered going from one restaurant to the other, then make sure you visit Capiz in April for their annual Capiztahan, a festival that celebrates both the province’s bountiful catch and their foundation day.

Ask around for the best diwal or angel wing clams. They’re highly seasonal and aren’t harvested wholesale, so you’re really in for a treat if you ever find these on your lunch or dinner table during your trip.

Then there’s a colorful product named after the province itself: Kapis shells. These delicate shells can turn almost any ornament into something elegant because of how it looks. A lot of Capisnons use these shells as raw materials for virtually anything—lampshades, lanterns, windows of ancestral homes, plates, bowls and gift boxes. And the list goes on.

L’OSTERIA ITALIANO RISTORANTE VINERIA opened in the quiet shores of Tuason Beach in Siargao in January with something to boast: Neapolitan pizzas and authentic Bolognese.

L’Osteria gives off an island vibe vis-a-vis creature comforts. The indoor dining is all of wooden floors, tables and chairs, and a brick oven-equipped open kitchen, while the outdoor dining looks out into the ocean—a marvelous spot to have your Italian fix.

Neapolitan pizzas are the name of the game here, along with their authentic Bolognese pasta dishes made by the owner—a Bologna native who’s been in the country for 20 years.

Served too are crescentine e culatello, fried bread you can only find in the towns between Bologna and Florence, and a refreshing caprese salad made with fresh mozzarella from Bacolod.

One odd item is not quite Italian: the fish tagine, a Moroccan dish slow-cooked with sliced meat, poultry, or fish with vegetables.

The salty smell of the ocean wafts through the open-air dining space, competing with the rich, heady aroma that comes from the food being cooked at the back kitchen.

Far off the distance, the sun slowly meets the vast ocean as streaks of oranges tint the sky. The music is the sound of waves crashing on the shoreline—these are what you get when you dine al fresco at Octagon Bed & Dine located in the town of Basco, Batanes.

At the indoor dining area, guests will be treated to an exciting mix of artworks—woodwork and paintings. There’s a shelf that features wines including the local drink parek. Sit close to the window so you get to enjoy the idyllic view of Basco port and the famed Basco Lighthouse perched on top of Naidi Hills. Or if you feel like it, you can request to dine by the beach.

But what makes Octagon remarkable is the fact that it’s a punctuation to your Batanes experience—through its wonderfully-made classic Ivatan eats.

PASS ISLAND, WEST OF CORON, PALAWAN checks everything that we dream of in an island destination: simple, peaceful, without mammoth structures that block spectacular sea views. It’s all of three hectares surrounded by crystal clear waters, and with a white sand beach and the most romantic sunsets.

A slice of life on Pass Island is available to everyone on a Reefs and Wrecks Island Hopping Tour for it’s a lunch stop where guests get to spend two hours on the island to eat, swim, snorkel and take photos.

But now, staying overnight is an option and a treat to those who find pleasure in back to basics and tropical idyll.

Pass Island has seven thatched huts—four for two people and three for up to five—and they’re right on the beach. They’re as bare as they can be. The huts for two have a small veranda while the “family huts” have one that’s twice as large, and come with a simple bed and mattresses.

There’s one fan per hut, which you don’t really need because of the constant sea breeze.

Only shared bathrooms at Pass located close to the basketball court.

Rent or bring your own tent and choose a spot on the beach. At daytime, hammocks are available but all you need really is a beach towel to lie on.

Bring in your own food for the duration of your stay or have the staff cook meals for you. Traditional Filipino meals will be put on the table like fresh seafood and a serving of fruits if you avail of a fullboard package. Dinners can be at one of the beachside tables. How often do you go on holidays?

Because both our [his and wife Marian Rivera’s] work schedules are unpredictable, we have to wait for our respective shows to go on a break before we plan anything. That’s why we almost always book at the last minute— a habit that is not highly recommended; haha! The key holidays are also the basic ones like Christmas, Holy Week and, of course, our birthdays in August and November.

What’s your secret to finding time for vacations despite your crazy busy work schedules?

The moment we find a window, we immediately grab it, may it be a couple of days to a whole week. With our work, it is impossible for us to be away for more than two weeks.

How do you plan your family getaways?

for someone to help me in the planning since both of us are always preoccupied with other things. Of course, we already know what we want—it’s really just a matter of organizing the logistics. Given that we stay at least two days in a new place, my basic policy is 20 per cent planned itinerary, and 80 per cent kung ano ang matripan (on what we feel like doing).

What is your favorite Philippine destination?

I like any place that is peaceful, green, sustainable and clean. A place where my kids can safely run around while we enjoy a cup of coffee, or a mug of beer. It does not matter if it is on a mountain, by the beach, in my friend’s backyard, or even a protected area in any place within the chaotic Metro Manila for as long as we are with the right people. Pero siyempre, dapat panalo rin ang pagkain. (But of course, the food has to be winner too.)

What are the most memorable holidays you’ve had in the Philippines as a family?

We really love the beautiful islands here in our country. Palawan will always have a special place in our hearts. Amanpulo is on the top of our list. Our recent trip to Siargao via SkyJet Airlines is also one for the books.

Hard to say. We love so many and each has its own charm.

3 things to expect in urban exploration: Dirt, dust and death Urban explorer Benjo Cabarro Urban Exploration, for me, means finding and sharing the beauty in things that are uncommon to the common man. I was in a dark place before and a crazy friend of mine invited me to my first mission. I saw the light and the rest is history.

A mission is our own version of a road trip. We prepare for it just like you would on any other road trip: charge our cameras; pack food, water, extra clothes, and extra batteries. We also make sure we have movies to watch and music to listen to while we shoot.

I like watching the city from above and at night. It’s peaceful and the perspective change is lifeenhancing; you get to see that your problems are not so big after all.

Three things to expect from doing urban exploration: Dirt, dust and death. There is nothing else in play at that moment except your life.

My go-to gadget for my missions: GoPro. I tried bringing a DSLR once but it was too bulky.

I love the Makati Skyline so much. The street and city colors at night are perfect especially when you’re shooting the Poblacion area. The purples and magentas that illuminate the buildings around it are so pretty.

My 5 best missions in the Philippines: Climbing a TV station transmitter tower; climbing the tallest building at Century City; climbing the tallest building in Makati City; climbing the tallest building in the Philippines, and walking the scariest plank.

One of my most memorable missions was… when a massive mist engulfed my on a rooftop in Ortigas. I was taking photos and videos of the storm clouds and lightning play in the Antipolo side when from down south a massive body of mist came rolling in.

Everything turned white. It was eerie and magical at the same time.

My most daring mission was in another Ortigas mission where I “walked the plank.” It took me two years to prepare for it. It was utterly mental and required a lot of willpower.

I’m looking forward to experiencing the Hong Kong roofs! It’s a massive urban jungle and I cannot wait to explore its highs and lows.

I prefer heights, but urban exploration can be done anywhere. We’ve even explored a war tunnel. It’s just easier for me to meditate when I’m up high because of the tranquil and serene atmosphere.

If you want to try urban exploration, make sure… you know what you’re doing and prepare for all the risks. I’ve never really gotten into trouble during missions because of that.

A sound mind and a strong body are definitely required. I cannot count the number of times I was able to get out of a life-threatening situation because my body and mind were strong enough. I lift weights in the gym and practice parkour outside with my friends.

CORON, PALAWAN, THE WRECK diving capital of the Philippines, is known for its 13 World War II Japanese shipwrecks all lying within depth enough for them to be exploreable by underwater afficionados, from the Teru Kaze at a minimum depth of 4m, to the Irako with a maximum depth of 42m.

These wrecks offer great views from the outside and excellent routes on the inside for experienced divers and those with the right certification levels.

Most of Coron’s dive operators in town, including our own Reggae Dive Center, typically offers three daily dives.

If you only have a few days in town, try this itinerary.

START YOUR DIVING HOLIDAY WITH some shallower dives in Barracuda Lake, known for its thermoclines and temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celcius—a perfect warm-up for a stunning dive on the Morazan Maru, which offers great diving both for experienced and entry-level divers.

Morazan Maru was originally built in 1905 in England but was sunk in September 1944 along with the other wrecks. She has since turned into a home to an abundance of species like lionfish and giant trevallies, and even turtles.

Cap off your day with a shallow dive at Teru Kaze located a stone’s throw away from Morazan Maru, for some reef and wreck diving. This wreck is good for snorkeling as the shallowest part is only 4m below the surface. On most days, Teru Kaze will offer good views from below as well as from above the surface.

You’ll be back in Coron later in the afternoon with ample time to climb Mount Tapyas for a beautiful sunset and Coron Island views. Enjoy a refreshing fruit shake or a cold beer at the newly opened Tap(!)as Lounge before you continue further down the hill and out into town.

End your day by stopping at Coron’s many bars and restaurants. You can have the bistek and menudo at Lolo Nonoy’s or vegan pesto pasta and veggie sticks at Le Voyage. For something off-track, walk off the main street and venture into Coron’s side streets with its eateries and restaurants catering to all tastes.

EXPERIENCED AND CERTIFIED divers can upgrade their depth limits with dives to the Akitsushima.

This wreck’s location between 23 and 35 meters under the sea makes it not suitable for entry level divers but it remains to be one of the most popular dives in the area as it’s the only wreck left with its guns mostly intact. The guns are dislodged from the gun turrets and are currently standing upright on the seabed next to the wreck, with three barrels raised toward the surface.

Have your second dive at the Okikawa Maru, an oil tanker that holds the distinction as Coron’s longest and widest shipwreck at 160 meters in length and a 20-meter span across the beam.

Her shallower part lies above the depth limit for entry level divers.

This wreck is located in a passage that from time to time creates strong currents. Due to the relatively shallow depth and the current, the Okikawa Maru teems with marine life—groupers, snappers, crocodile fish, triggerfish including tinier species.

Cap your day’s dive at Lusong Gunboat, one of the last unidentified wrecks in Coron. The Gunboat took direct hits and had its wreckage spread over a wide area, though the hull is generally intact. This gunboat was also sunk in waters so shallow that this wreck pokes out of the water at low tide.

The Lusong Gunboat is perfect for all levels of divers—from those getting into scuba diving, experienced divers who want to chill a bit after some great dives, and macro enthusiasts.

End your day with a dip at the natural saltwater springs of Maquinit, or a full Italian meal at Altrove.

THIS DAY WILL BE YOUR LAST diving day in Coron since divers are advised not to fly within 18 hours of going underwater. Finish off in style at the Irako, Coron’s deepest and darkest shipwreck.

Irako was a refrigerator ship in the Japanese Navy. She has tight compartments and storage rooms, and her starting depth of 30 meters means only the most experienced of divers dare to take her on. Currents can change in a heartbeat and visibility ranges from a few meters on a bad day to magnificent in ideal months. Her upright position with masts still poised makes it easy to see why she has become part of many divers' bucket list when coming to Coron.

Another deep dive is on the cards for your last dive day: the Kogyo Maru, an auxiliary construction supply ship, which went down with her load. One can still see the toppled construction machines in her cargo holds, with belt tracks and hundreds upon hundreds of bags of cement. Like the Morazan Maru, this wreck is widely covered in corals and marine life, from schools of seabreams to circling big-eye trevallies, to huge numbers of scads and fusiliers.

Make a final dive in one of Coron’s reefs or one of the shallower wrecks to make this trip one for the books.

Head back town for some tasty ramen and a cold beverage at Buzz. You can also visit Tita Esh for a more lowkey vibe and some filling pansit canton or a heart-warming bowl of mami (local noodle dish).

A strict “No Reservation, No Entry” policy is in place for tourists. You will need to present a confirmed reservation at a Department of Tourismaccredited hotel/resort.

If you don’t have a reservation, there are a couple of ways you can still enter the island:

Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, with its beach literally as white and as fine as powder lapped by crystalline waters, is a tale as old as time. It’s been a constant must-visit and re-visit by tourists from any part of the globe.

But its decades of stardom prompted its neglect and abuse, leaving it beaten.

The highest official in the land, President Rodrigo Duterte, called it a “cesspool” and demanded its closure and massive rehab in April 2018.

The island re-opened in October 2018 after undergoing major changes— something which the locals have been looking forward to for a long time. It still entails a lot of work but has progressed nonetheless.

Almost-like-brand-new White Beach Gone are the beach umbrellas, chairs, and tables, along with parts of any establishment that were at least 25 meters from the shore, dotting a better part of the four-kilometer White Beach.

Boracay Foundation president and local Nenette Graf says “for us, it’s a sight for sore eyes: a beach that’s about as clear as a glass of distilled drinking water and unobstructed views of the island’s famous sunset.”

But it’s not only those that said goodbye to the famed powdery white sand beachfront.

Remember those sandcastles you always had a souvenir photo with? They too are gone along with one of the main attractions come sun down: fire dancing.

“We’re working with the local government to bring them back, but we have to put in stricter rules like banning the use of kerosene,” says Nenette. “We would like to have sandcastle artists and fire dances use LED lights instead.”

You might also want to think about bringing your own reusables (water bottles, toiletries, beach towels, and the like), as there are plans on banning the use of single-use plastics on the island. Resorts will still provide reusable cutleries and metal/paper/bamboo straws, but it’s still best to have your own to help the island out.

Be invited by a local to their private residence (you’ll need to present a sponsorship letter from the homeowner that’s been preapproved by the Boracay Security Committee through the Office of the Jetty Port Administrator.)

Single-use plastics and styrofoam packaging have been phased out.

It’s better to bring your own reusable water bottle to the island and get a refill at your resort.

All parties are confined to enclosed indoor spaces.

More than just White Beach White Beach is the beach that gave Boracay rockstar status, but the island has a lot more to offer, speaking of beaches.

Puka Shell Beach, located on the northwestern tip of the island, is back to its glorious and pristine self, perfect for any smartphone or camera-wielding group of beach aficionados.

You might want to bring your own food since the beach huts that used to be there have been removed.

Bulabog Beach, also known as Back Beach, is also a good place to hit for beach bums. It’s the hub for wind sports on the island, specifically windsurfing and kiteboarding. Here, you get to enjoy two things that people don’t really know about Boracay: bioluminescent planktons, which only came back after the clean-up; and a beach sunrise that rivals the sunset.

Local writer and PR consultant Freida Dario-Santiago recommends Diniwid Beach, quieter than White Beach with a stunning 200m shoreline, located just off Boat Station 1’s far end. It’s got restaurants and bars with much lesser crowd. Get there on foot on the northern end of White Beach or by tricycle.

Food on the island is still a thing, especially for famished foodies who love going around the country for great eats. Talking to Freida gave us an idea of how you can go about an eating spree in Boracay: Have breakfast at the Sunny Side Café, an all-day breakfast cafe that’s located right by the beach in Station 3. They’ve got an amazing array of breakfast food that’s been called the “best breakfast food” by Forbes Magazine—thanks to their “fresh, inventive take” on casual food.

This is arguably the reason you’re even in Boracay in the first place. The island’s beach parties are legendary, which brings to mind Ibiza or Cancun. Bad for the beach, though, what with all the mess that’s always left behind after a long night of revelry.

Boracay parties are not entirely gone, but you won’t be seeing them happen on White Beach or any other beach for that matter. Places like Epic Boracay and other bars in Station 2 will now hold their sought-after parties indoors. They’re bound to be as wild as before—but they’re just not gonna happen on the beach.

Cap off your night by reliving a classic night out in Boracay along Station 2. Freida recommends starting out at Aplaya The Beach Bar to have—or continue—your pre-game, then move to Exit Bar, BomBom Bar and Pat’s Creek before going all out at Epic.

Frieda recommends the Bacon & Mango Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Earl Grey & Orange Pancakes infused with TWG Tea, and the Avocado & Bacon Smash. These are best enjoyed with either a flat white or Vietnamese-style iced coffee, made with beans brewed by the EDSA Specialty Beverage Group. You can also go for a mug of Sunny Side Brew, a craft beer specially brewed for them by Pedro Brewcrafters.

Lunch will always be a toss-up to what you’re feeling hungry for for the day. D’Mall in Station 2 is always a good place to start, as it has a variety of restos that can satisfy almost every palate. Places like HAMA Japanese Cuisine, Thai Basil, Cyma, and Aria Cucina Italiana will answer your desire for Japanese, Thai, Greek, and Italian food.

To those on a budget, Freida recommends Smoke at D’Talipapa (the wet market beside D’Mall), Tindahan It Boracay (classic paluto or cooking service just off the main road), or Maya’s Filipino and Mexican Cuisine (authentic Filipino food in Station 1).

You can choose to go back to D’Mall for your pre-game or walk around with a Chori Burger from Merly’s to start your night. Other places Freida recommends for dinner: Pig Out Bistro in Station 1 for European fusion cuisine. Frieda says to follow your heart, but if your heart isn’t set, there’s always their Crab Burger, Octopus Tentacles and Calamari. Nonie’s in Station X is for those who want to dive into fusion Filipino that’s healthy, sustainable and delicious.

Smoking, eating, drinking alcohol, and hot coal-roasting of meats not allowed on the beach.

Island R&R—where to go If money is no object, mainstays are ShangriLa’s Boracay Resort & Spa in Barangay Yapak, or Discovery Shores Boracay, Movenpick, and Fridays in Boat Station 1. All of these places have their in-house spas. If you’re on a budget but would still like to feel the luxury of Station 1, book a room at White House Beach Resort, which now houses a restaurant that’s been a Boracay favorite: Los Indios Bravos.

Swing by some of the locally-run spas in Station 3, which includes the recently re-opened Mandala Spa & Resort Villas, the most renowned spa in the island.

GETTING AROUND THE ISLAND Tricycles are your main means to get from one end of the island to the other. Fares are at Php10 per person on flat roads while renting a tricycle for yourself or your group will cost from Php60.

E-tricycles will eventually replace gas-powered ones. These will have regular stops and will either be available for hire on the spot.

The local government is hard at work in the island’s road network, and though incomplete, it’s already taken a big step. The roads are significantly wider with the addition of a proper sidewalk, but it’s still dark at night.

There is a 25- + fivemeter easement being followed by establishments along the beach. This means a much wider beach unless there is a temporary structure in place. Also, no beach chairs, beach beds, stalls, umbrellas, and tables can be placed on the beach.

The influx of tourists has turned the once sleepy province of Batanes into a holiday destination of convenience.

Now there’s an eatery in almost every nook and cranny.

But despite the bourgeoning tourist crowd, the island paradise still retains its allure—rolling hills, breathtaking seascapes, and the authentic local vibe.

Coron in northern Palawan is favored for its diverse adventurous offerings. Divers from here and abroad place Coron as a unique underwater marvel particularly for its World War II shipwrecks. Guests can either opt for an inland stay or cruise the islands, some of which turned into exclusive private resorts.

For an experience unique to Coron, dive and explore the underwater rainforest and Japanese shipwrecks that has made Coron a haven for divers.

RUN, JUMP, AND VAULT YOUR way through everyday obstacles with a new sport that’s taken the world by storm: parkour.

We spoke to Robby Apelo from the Philippine Parkour and Freerunning Association, one of the country’s largest parkour groups, and Raven Cruz of Rogue Movement, to know more about the sport.

What is parkour?

Robby says it’s “using natural ways of movement to navigate obstacles in a given environment.”

Its movements are inspired by the military obstacle course training in France but developed as a standalone activity by David Belle, Sebastien Foucan, and the Yamakasi.

Terms, gearing up Training sessions are called jams, while parkour practitioners are called traceurs.

Before a jam, have a good warm-up by doing jumping jacks or jogging, and stretching. Check the space you’ll be moving around in. Make sure everything you’re likely to use is sturdy and safe.

Plan your moves.

Basic movements Jumping/landing. Bend your knees at a 45-degree angle as you swing your arms back; push hard off the ground through your toes while you swing your arms forward; bring your knees to your chest to get your hips in the right place as you keep an eye on where you’re landing. Before landing, extend your legs and land on the balls of your feet to absorb the impact. Make sure your legs aren’t locked out or too relaxed before landing. rolling/Breakfall. This can be done from

a standing or a crouched position. Place your hands on the ground in front of you and slightly to one side, preferably on the opposite side of whichever shoulder you feel more comfortable with. Tuck your chin into your chest as said comfy shoulder goes down, pushing off with your legs to initiate the roll. Keep your legs and your head tucked throughout the roll until you get your feet under you. Push off the ground with your hands and feet to stand up and be on your merry way.

Quadrupedal Movement. It’s as simple

as crawling on your hands and feet. Make sure you’re low to the ground and that your knees don’t touch the floor. Move your hand and its opposite leg to make the movement more efficient.

Safety Vault/Speed Step/Step Vault.

One of the easiest vaults in parkour, it makes use of one hand and the opposite leg to go over an obstacle. Approach the obstacle (usually a wall that’s about hip height) at a comfortable speed for a bit of momentum. Once you’re close, jump from one leg to go over the obstacle. Put down the other foot and the same hand as the leg you jumped off of on top of the obstacle, creating a space between them for your jumping leg to pass through. Once your jumping leg is through, push off the obstacle with your hand and foot to continue your run.

Wall run. A very useful move for getting up walls without ladders. Start with a bit of a run towards a wall that’s about as tall as you. When close to the wall, step off the wall with one foot at about waist height and redirect your forward momentum upward, reaching for the top of the wall with your hands. Grab the top of the wall and pull yourself up.
