“La Janosa is the uncrowded version of Naked Island while its sister island Mam-on boasts of a white sand beach. Anahawan Island, on the other hand, has good surf breaks but it’s advisable to get a guide who can take you to the right spot,” says Gianni.

Bask in underwater marvel Freediving and scuba diving are two other exciting things water babies can do in Siargao. Gianni recommends Pansukian or Naked Island for freedivers for its nice coral formations, reefs and good visibility. The water in these spots are usually calm, great for snorkeling.

Experienced scuba divers can head to Blue Cathedral, which features a 20-meter-diameter hole on top and two deep caverns. Gianni says that when you go down to 40ft deep, there’s a good chance to see barracudas and tiger sharks. This underwater rock formation is named such for it looks like one with its three entrances: the top hole, north cavern and east cavern. Sun rays would pass through the hole, creating a prism effect, making the water appear as if it’s bathed in blue light.

See Siargao on a different angle What can be a better way to bask in the beauty of Siargao’s ocean than to stand up paddleboard (SUP)?

Gianni suggests a route from Kermit Siargao to Malinao for a chance to paddle through masses of mangroves. Del Carmen is another great spot for a mangrove tour. The town is more than just a jump off point to Sugba Lagoon for it has the largest stretch of mangrove forest in the country and is home to a rare saltwater crocodile species.

Gamefish and head to a hilltop lake There are towns in Siargao that lets you escape the maddening crowd of General Luna: Pilar and San Benito.

“People come to Pilar for Magpupungko Rock Pools but what they didn’t know is that it’s a great game fishing destination,” Gianni says. Pilar also has a quaint fishing village where people built their homes over water.

San Benito town, located on the west coast of Siargao, is small village that’s home to a beautiful hilltop lake and uninhabited tiny isles that are as appealing as the famous players Guyam, Naked and Daku islands. “What I like most about San Benito is the serene Poneas Hilltop Hidden Lake, also home to different freshwater species,” says Gianni.

Have a food adventure Culinary gems have sprouted in Siargao so if dining is the topic, you will not run of options. For authentic brick-oven Italian pizza and freshmade pasta, there’s Kermit Siargao.

Harana Surf Resort, according to Gianni, serves the best crispy kangkong (water spinach) halo-halo (a dessert made of shaved ice, mixed beans and fruits), fried chicken and poke bowl. Bayud Boutique Resort’s in-house restaurant, The Surfing Pig, is also worth the little detour for their sisig tacos, lechon kare-kare (roast pork in peanut stew) and kinilaw (local ceviche). MT. HALCON, ORIENTAL MINDORO

Mt Halcon may not be the tallest in the Philippines but it sure is the toughest requiring lots of river crossings, endless steep trails, and a highly unpredictable weather. it takes about two days to reach the summit and another two to return to the jump off point, but from the top, you’ll be rewarded with an ocean of clouds rolling over the summit. Have your souvenir shot at the summit’s famous “diving board.”

Mt. Mantalingajan is an ancestral domain of the Palaw’an, the indigenous people of Palawan. Along the trail, you’d pass by the small community of the Tau’t Bato tribe where you’d get a glimpse of their way of life. Bird life and rare flora abound in the mountain as well as tropical trees. ed says “the trail has lots of cliff faces and water source is very limited. it was rainy when we climbed so everything looked white. But ordinarily, you’d see the 360-degree view of the open peaks, southern Palawan and the sea.”

Ed was taken aback by the mountain’s large canopy trees that give an impression that you’re entering a green natural tunnel. “in another part of the trail, you’d find a small crater lake called Lake Duminagat, deemed sacreed by the Subanon people who live in the mountain ridge,” says Ed. Cuyo Bay in Palawan is perfect for flat water kiteboarding—thanks to its sandy bottom and some outside reef passes that offer small wave riding fun. “Although Cuyo is an island off Palawan, it has been listed under Mindoro because its wind is from the same venturi effect of the tablas straight. strong northeast wind blows from October to May. Dano see A former kitesurfing champion who is now into kite designing, manufacturing, and distribution.

If you think that surfing is all there is in the country’s surfing capital, take a look at its waves again, because then you’ll realize that it’s as attractive to a different kind of surfing crowd— kitesurfers. Cloud 9 is said to be the mecca for advanced kitesurfers because of its huge waves and averagely light winds. But Dano has a piece of advice: stay well clear of the Boardwalk area; otherwise you’re likely to get your kite all tangled up. The huge lagoon near Viento del mar in General luna, also offers a good flat water kiting—thanks, in part, to its sandy and grassy bottom.
