Life on Main Street Last month, I mentioned the fact that we’re now a “Main Street” business, with a little nook on the corner of Railroad and, well, Main in Four Oaks.

Here’s what I’ve learned since then:

On display People walking by on the sidewalk are compelled to look in the window. So, folks strolling by peer into the window, seeing largely their own reflections in the slightly tinted glass. Thanks to the lighting, however, we can clearly watch them as they struggle to catch a glimpse of us.

I’ve started waving in a comically exaggerated manner, which would be more useful if folks could actually see it. Guess there’s no need to get a “Please feed the journalist” sign for my desk, either.

Open the door and say hello. I promise we don’t bite.

Getting some exercise If I had a doctor (that’s another column for another day), she’d be pleased to learn that I’ve started walking to the post office. I guess the fact that I can see it from my desk encourages me to leave my car parked and hoof it on over there.

The only flaw in this plan is that I’m never quite sure if we need more magazines in our little stand, so I’ve started taking a handful with me just in case.

Trainspotting I grew up in Marion County, South Carolina, where two things exist in abundance — tobacco and trains to move it around.

So, waiting in the middle of town for a train to meander by is nothing new to me.

In Four Oaks, however, I’ve learned that you don’t have to wait very long for Amtrak trains. Passengers on those silver bullets whiz by, seeing the town only as a brick-colored blur.

Apparently, they can’t wait to get to Selma.

And why not? It’s a cool town, too.

The history of the Johnston County Chorale

SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Chorale began in October 1977 as the Johnston County Choral Society.

Emmett Windham, a graduate of the New England Conservatory and professor at Campbell, saw a need for a chorus in the area.

After contacting music teachers and church choir directors in the county to see if there was an interest, Emmett and his wife, Brenda (who served as the first accompanist for the group), started regular rehearsals for the first concert to be held on December 4 of that year at the First Baptist Church in Smithfield.

Eighty singers performed in the first concert, including Gladys Prince. She is a charter member of the original group who attends the yearly concerts but does not perform.

In November 1981, Genevieve Medlin Berge became the society’s second director. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York and a native of Smithfield, she volunteered to become the interim conductor due to the lack of leadership for the upcoming Christmas concert.

Lots of hard work and cooperation ensued resulting in a successful performance of Bach’s “Magnificat,” accompanied by members of the North Carolina Symphony.

In 1983, she resigned to get her Masters at

the University of North Carolina in voice and conducting.

Jim Marshall, then-director of the Raleigh Oratorio Society, was selected to direct the ensemble. During his five years as director, the society performed at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., with President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, attending the performance.

In 1989, Robert Daniels of Wilson served a oneyear term as interim director. The accompanist for that season was Ken Woodard.

The next year, Jim Powers of Zebulon, who had been a soloist in some of the the society’s concerts, was chosen to be the new director.

A renowned tenor soloist, Dr. Powers had performed with the North Carolina Symphony, Duke University, Duke Chapel, Raleigh Oratorio and Duke Civic Chorus presentations.

Under his direction, the Choral Society traveled to New York City to perform with other choirs from around the country in a presentation of Benjamin Britten’s “Mass in Time of War.” For the next several seasons the Johnston Choral Society performed such classics as Menoitt’s Christmas opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” Handel’s “Messiah” as well as “Big River,” a Broadway musical based on Mark Twain’s

“Huckleberry Finn.”

In 1997, Joel Adams, a chorus teacher at both South Johnston and Enloe high schools, became the group’s next director. During his tenure, the society hosted the American Boy Choir and Raleigh Flute Choir in concerts.

For the next several years, Amy King, a native of Knightdale and graduate of Meredith College in both music education and piano performance, served as the accompanist for the singers.

Adams retired from public school teaching in 2001 and decided to turn over his baton to a new director. After a year-long search, Chris Watkins was selected as the new director of JCCS. In 2002, he persuaded the board of directors to pursue new ideas for the Silver Anniversary celebration of the Choral Society. The name of the musical organization was changed to the Johnston County Chorale.

Since that time, the Chorale has achieved the largest membership in its history with record attendance at each of their concerts. In December 2005, the Johnston County Chorale and the Wilson Chorale were invited to perform a special Christmas concert in the world’s second largest cathedral — the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

Paying it forward with prayer bears

Photo by Stephanie Byrd Photography FOUR OAKS — When 13-year-old Luke Beasley visited an office in downtown Four Oaks recently, he wore a blue Adidas shirt with “Earn Your Stripes” on the front.

He’s been there and done that.

There’s a scar on the back of his head and neck that serves as a conversation piece of his struggle against Chiari Malformation, a condition in which “the brain herniates out of the opening of the base of the skull and pushes into the spinal column.”

That’s how Luke’s mother, Donna Mott, describes the disorder that Luke was diagnosed with in late 2010.

After a surgery in February 2015, during which part of his skull, his top vertebrae and some of his brain tissue was removed, Luke’s ailments brought on by the blockage between the brain and the spinal cord — things like headaches, fatigue and dizziness — became much more manageable.

So, in celebration, Luke and Donna decided to help others by sending “Luke’s Prayer Bears” to other children across the country who are fighting the condition.

But to understand the reason, one has to know a little more about Luke’s own journey.

Because the condition is so rare, it took a while for the doctors to find it in Luke.

“They kept telling me he was dehydrated, and I kept getting more and more frustrated because I was pumping him full of water and Gatorade,” Donna said. “He was probably swimming.

“He would go to the table to eat his cereal, he would tell me his spoon was too heavy.”

Some days were better than others, but it was hard to know how Luke, who was 10 at the time, would feel from one day to the next.

“When the worst days would come, I would be running,” he said. “But it would feel like I was going so slow. Then, when I would walk, it would feel like I was jumping up and down. Something that just shouldn’t be happening.”

After finally convincing the doctors to order a MRI, it became clear that Luke was far more than dehydrated.

“To have a diagnosis of Chiari, you have to have about 5 millimeters of the brain herniation through the opening,” Donna said. “Luke’s was a centimeter.”

When surgery turned out to be the best option, naturally Donna began worrying about her son.

“My biggest fear going into the surgery was is he going to come out as Luke,” she said. “Am I still

going to have my Luke when I’m done?

“I remember being desperate for prayer. As many people as possible going to the creator of the universe on behalf of my son. There was so much comfort in that. There was so much strength that I found in that. I was so desperate, I had to resist the urge to run out in the street and stop cars going down in front of our house and saying, ‘pray for my son.’”

As it turns out, a prayer shawl and a prayer bear played a role in the process.

“Luke was given a prayer blanket with a prayer shawl, as well as a prayer bear,” Donna said.

“And he took the prayer shawl with him to the hospital. It stayed with him every step of the way.

So, that’s kind of how the prayer bears were born.

I wanted to do something regarding praying for others and finishing (God’s) work.”

Dr. Herbert E. Fuchs at Duke performed the surgery, which sparked an almost-immediate change in Luke’s health.

“I just thought it was normal. I thought everybody walked around with a headache.

They just take medicine for it. … If somebody was just pressing down on your brain,” he said, demonstrating by holding the sides of his head with his hands. “There was this tremendous

pressure and then you wake up and you’re normal.”

His sense of humor about the experience also served him well. He asked to keep the piece of skull removed in the surgery (they told him no) and he uses “Zipper Head” as his online gaming tag as a nod to his scar.

When he’s not running cross country, practicing vaults on the trampoline or learning all he can about sharks, he’s passing on the good will he received in his time of need.

“It started with a coworker of mine who had breast cancer that had come back for the second time,” Donna said of the first prayer bear. “She was really, really sick. And I loved the prayer shawl that Luke was given, but I can’t knit. So, Luke and I talked about it and we decided to send her a prayer bear and a card.”

That first bear, which the patient named Luke, went to every chemotherapy session and got enough squeezes to almost be worn out.

Luke and Donna have sent out about 30 more bears since, mostly to kids like Luke who are diagnosed with Chiari. Each bear, in addition to being soft and cuddly, has a card attached to it. It reads: This bear may look like an ordinary bear. But it is not so. This bear is very special.

A prayer bear is only given to a very special person and that is you! Many have knelt around this bear praying just for you.

Whenever you hold it close, may you feel our prayers of special healing and complete peace. Whenever you wrap your arms around this bear, may you feel the loving arms of God wrapped around you.

Luke and Donna also write notes, with Luke typically addressing the young patient and Donna offering comfort to the parents.

“I consider myself lucky after my surgery,” Luke said. “We’ve made bears for kids that have to go back in after surgery and get a (spinal) fusion. There’s some that have to get metal rods in their neck, and they’ll never be the same. It can be a bad thing. It may not be as widely known as cancer, but it’s still a bad thing. And we just want more people to know about it.

“I’ve been through it, and I’ll write something like, ‘I’ve been through this too, and I will be praying for you.’ We’re not just saying it, we actually do it.”

“We always pray for the adults, too,” Donna added. “They need it. How many times do you feel so helpless when you hear about these children going through these unimaginable things? And for Chiari, there’s no cure. It’s something they could deal with for the rest of their lives.

“Sometimes, we as Christians, we have this blanket statement ‘I’ll pray for you.’ Or you’ll see it on Facebook, ‘pray for me,’ and you hit the ‘Like’ button. But do you really pray for these people?”

It’s a project that Luke takes seriously, having sold some of his toys to help offset the cost of making and shipping the bears all over the country.

On the surface, it’s a small act. But it’s one that matters to the kids on the receiving end of one of Luke and Donna’s bears. “(A little girl) drew a card for Luke,” Donna said. “She wrote how much it meant to her and thanked all of us. And then she drew a picture of herself with the bear. And it was the cutest thing. One of the boys loves Pokemon, and he sent Luke some of his prized Pokemon cards.”

Those are examples of how grateful kids with Chiari can be for support while they earn their stripes.

NEWS FROM YO Johnston Co. Tourism Authority board awards $225,282 in capital grants Submitted by Johnston County Visitors Bureau

SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Tourism Authority approved 12 capital grants for a total of $225,282 recently. The Special Projects committee reviewed all applications, and made a recommendation to the full board that each project receive the amount requested by area non-profits. The committee found each project to be worthy and with some fund balance available to use, the board agreed wholeheartedly to support all projects.

“It is amazing when forces for good come together and make great things happen.

I am super proud of our board, our organization, our staff and our county,” Ernie Brame, chairman of the Special Projects committee, said.

The cabins at Howell Woods, pictured here, will grow in number thanks to a recent grant.

The 2017—18 grant recipients and description of grant projects are as follows: »» Ava Gardner Museum ($30,000) — Grant funds will be used to build a new exterior wall to the museum building to correct moisture issues and replace the roof. »» Benson Foundation for the Arts, W.J. Barefoot Auditorium ($12,000) — The project involves tearing down and replacing the antiquated and unsafe lighting system, replacing with new LED lighting, software, interface and all equipment needed. »» Benson Parks and Recreation Department ($9,360) — Grant funds will be used to install asphalt ADA accessible walkways at the Benson Civic Center to connect the parking area to the ballfields. »» Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site ($7,000) — Funds will be used for bridging a ravine to expand the site’s walking trail system. Funds will also be used for interpretive signage for the trail extension.

»» The Clayton Center ($10,000) — Funds will be used to continue the auditorium digital upgrade relating to video projection and equipment necessary to produce high definition projection, as well as creating the foundation to provide live streaming, simulcasting and information presentations on a global platform. »» Johnston Community College, Howell Woods ($50,000) — Funds will be utilized to build an additional two-room cabin with meeting space at Howell Woods to accommodate more hunters, bird-watchers and meeting attendees. »» Johnston County Heritage Center ($5,650) — Funds will be used to purchase five historical markers that will be placed at visible sites for tourists. Funds will also provide a guidebook or brochure.

»» Max G. Creech Historical Museum ($2,000) — Grant funds will be used to purchase archival quality conservation materials to store and protect the artifacts in the museum. »» Tobacco Farm Life Museum ($9,272) — Grant will be used to have a professional pest management team tent and treat the packhouse and workshop buildings and artifacts inside for powder post beetles. »» Town of Selma, Civic Center ($25,000) — Funds will be used for the renovations of this historic building to provide meeting space and an event venue for the Town of Selma. »» Town of Wilson’s Mills, Clayton Rugby Association ($15,000) — The grant funds will be used to assist with the project costs to develop three rugby fields at the community recreation park in Wilson’s Mills. »» Town of Wilson’s Mills, Parks & Recreation Picnic Shelter ($50,000) — Construction of picnic shelter that includes bathrooms and a storage room at the new community park.

SMITHFIELD — Seventeen faculty members from colleges across the country, and one from Australia, made some cool guitars recently during the National STEM Guitar Project held at Johnston Community College.

SMITHFIELD — On Saturday, June 10, the Junior Women’s League of Smithfield set sail with their guests at the Johnston County Agricultural Center for its secondannual Big Night Out gala fundraiser.

In front of 200 attendees, the league’s board of directors presented a check for $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Johnston County to support the implementation of the SMART Girls curriculum.

The program combines informational and experiential learning activities to help young ladies within Johnston County develop the knowledge and skills necessary to practice healthy lifestyle choices, impact their community and develop leadership skills that will follow them into adulthood.

“The Junior Women’s League has been an amazing support to the Boys and Girls Club this year,” said Mamie Moore, Center Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Johnston County. “The funds raised from their Big Night Out event will help us to expand our SMART Girls program and ensure that the future women leaders of Johnston County are equipped with necessary leadership skills to help them succeed. We are excited to see what the future has in store for JWL and look forward to continuing to partner with them for years to come.”

“The support from our communities was incredible,” JWL president Jessica Davis said. “Local businesses joined forces with JWL to support the futures of young women in Johnston County and over 200 community members donated through the purchase of tickets. Johnston County’s commitment to ensuring that our future generations have the necessary skills to positively impact their communities is inspiring. JWL is grateful for the outpouring of support. JCC is completing a National Science Foundation, Advanced Technological Education (NSF ATE) project to increase the number of students in technician pathways to serve area manufacturers.

Deborah Porto, dean of business and advanced technology programs, attended the NSF ATE Principal Investigators conference and watched a session by the NSF STEM Guitar project.

There she invited the project to offer a summer session at JCC. The school is one of six colleges in the United States that hosted the National Science Foundation’s Guitar Building Institutes this past summer.

The project offered training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school and post-secondary faculty.

Brian Worley, director of advanced technology programs at JCC, participated. He said the college plans to integrate the project into the college’s robotics team, the industrial systems program and STEM summer camp next year.

“The STEM Guitar Project is a complete learning experience,” he said. “We started with just wood necks and bodies and ended up with a working, playable guitar. I cannot think of many other projects that incorporate every element of STEM.”

Kayaking and canoeing class puts beginners on the water

FOUR OAKS — In less than an hour, Johnston County residents can learn the basics of kayaking and canoeing before ever putting a paddle in the water thanks to a program at Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center in Four Oaks.

“The goal of the class is to educate the community about our local waterways while introducing them to a popular water sport,” Howell Woods’ Director Jordan T. Astoske said.

He added that the class is offered several times over the course of the summer, and this was the fourth year the class was held.

Officially, the site is called the Rudolph Howell & Son Environmental Learning Center. The 2,800-acre forest supports activities like hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching, hunting, fishing and more. The site is named for Howell, of the Howell Theatre in Smithfield, who gifted the land to Johnston Community College in 1993.

The three-hour class starts with an introduction to boating safety, learning the parts of each boat and paddle techniques. Each participant is given a handout to keep that describes each part of the canoe or kayak as well as the different paddle strokes.

After the classroom instruction, participants are ready to cruise. The calm waters and enclosed space make it easy for beginners to paddle around, getting a feel for the vessel. To better understand the differences in vessels, participants could start their day paired in a canoe and finish individually in a kayak or vice versa.

“They learned a lot from it. They’d definitely do it again,” she said.

Astoske said it’s natural for beginners to be nervous before getting on the water. After getting on the water, participants learn to relax.

“I enjoy seeing the enthusiasm after they get into a canoe or kayak,” he said. “They have overcome their fear.”

Dot Hooks’ work to be on display this month

SMITHFIELD — The Frank Creech Art Gallery on the campus of Johnston Community College will display the works of Dot Hooks this month, starting with an opening reception on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 3 p.m.

The exhibit, entitled “Dot Hooks: An Artist’s Life,” is in celebration of one of Johnston County’s most influential artists.

Hooks, who died in 2003, was described in the July 13, 1948 edition of The Smithfield Herald as “a pintsized package of determination and talent.” She owned a photography studio in Smithfield from 1939 to 1978, and was the first woman in North Carolina to earn the Master of Photography distinction from Professional Photographers of America.

While photography paid the bills, painting was her passion. She closed her shop on Wednesdays each week to work on her painting. “That one day a week is mine to do sketches and water painting,” she told the Herald.

“The last time I saw Dot, she was attending Sunday Morning services in the Methodist Church,” Frank Creech Art Gallery committee chair Laura Moore said. “I thought she was wearing sunglasses to protect her eyes from the glare of the sun coming through the stained glass windows. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t blame her.

She is an artist and needs her eyes.’

“I later learned from her nephew, Buddy, that the ‘sunglasses’ were really transition eye glasses. Over the course of her professional life, she ‘transitioned’ from photographer of babies and brides to outstanding visual artist in oils, acrylics, watercolors, and more. Unfortunately, I did not appreciate what an outstanding artist she was until many years later. How I wish I had known her better!”

Her paintings are included in many public collections, including at Johnston County Heritage Center, Johnston Health, KS Bank, Johnston County Arts Council and Campbell University.

In addition, she gave lessons for many years and many of today’s local artists studied under her.

After the reception on Sept. 10, hosted by the Down to Earth Garden Club, the exhibit will be on display on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-5 p.m. through Oct. 1.

Smithfield church raises funds to dig wells in developing nations SMITHFIELD — The Light of Christ International Outreach Center, located on Buffalo Road in Smithfield, has partnered with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) to dig water wells in nations where there is no access to clean drinking water.

According to CBN, “The lack of safe, clean drinking water causes 80 percent of all sickness and disease in the developing world — affecting more people than famine, AIDS and war combined.”

The Light of Christ had originally planned a three-month campaign to raise enough money to dig three wells at $1,800 each. But after just six weeks, and with the help of a “matching challenge,” $4,800 had been raised.

By the time the campaign was over, Brad Goodale, Director of Church Partnerships for CBN, came to Smithfield to collect a check for $12,600. Pastor Gene Bruton has requested that CBN dig seven wells in seven different countries.

“Our desire is to provide natural living water to these villages and then to follow up with the spiritual Living Water,” he said.

Before making the decision to hire a wedding planner, however, the bride and groom should try to get on the same page.

“I would make sure that they’ve sat down and discussed what kind of wedding they would like,” Wallen said. “That’s the first thing. And what their budget is.”

After working those things out, couples should go ahead and get started. Wallen suggests a year as the proper lead time for planning a wedding.

“We like a year, that way we can cover anything,” she said. “We can do less than six months. But the reason I say a year is that most venues are booked a year in advance. If you have your heart set on a venue and you’ve waited until six months before your wedding day, nine times out of 10 you’re not going to be able to get the venue.”

The average cost of a wedding nationally is about $25,000, with that figure being a little lower here in Johnston County.

“There are people who don’t want to spend that much, and there are ways that you can go around it and still have a very nice wedding,” Wallen said. “I love all (weddings). I’ve done some ballroom bling ones, and we recently worked with a venue that was more rustic and out in the country. I like a variety. Us wedding planners, we like that because we get to be creative in different environments.”

“That is where people want the silver, the diamonds,” she said. “Some want gold. But it’s a lot of bling.

Many do choose set dates to go on their honeymoon, but pay attention to the possible money you could be saving just by moving your travel dates by a day or two.

If you are very limited on when you can leave, taking a cruise may not work best for you due to structured dates. Many cruises are set to depart on Sunday for seven nights, making it difficult for a couple to be at the port after a Saturday night wedding. Many of the three- and four-day cruises leave on Thursday and Friday, which also conflicts with most wedding plans.

When planning your honeymoon, don’t make your decision based on a resort or destination that your friends went to “just because they had fun.” Remember, everybody has fun on their honeymoon!

You need to go somewhere that you are interested in. Also, do not dismiss a location or resort just because you know someone that went there. You may be passing up a great deal — it could be why they picked it.

If you are planning to be gone only three or four days, don’t try to go to Aruba. Places like Aruba and Jamaica call for more days, due to the air travel time, transfer time to resort and the laid back pace.

Also, you need to be leery of destinations people went to years ago because they do change and may not be as great as they remember. Resorts change ownership, the areas resorts are in can change and new resorts in better locations are always opening up.

Experience, education and hard work lead to 40 years in business for area company

SMITHFIELD — Joe Parrish, co-owner of Parrish Cleaning Service, has seen his business change quite a bit over the last four decades.

The company is celebrating its 40-year anniversary, and it began in downtown Smithfield in the late 1970s with Joe driving an old mail truck, complete with the right-side steering wheel and the roll-up door in the back, from house to house cleaning carpets.

There are a few more trucks now, and the company has since added residential cleaning, rug cleaning, janitorial service and water and smoke damage recovery to its menu of services.

But, in the beginning, it was just Joe cleaning carpets.

“My uncle, who was helping me at the time, said, ‘you’re going to get a lot of looks in that truck,’” he said. “And it did. Everybody would say, ‘did you see that carpet cleaning guy in town with that post office truck?’”

The inside was just as interesting. The carpet cleaning machine, similar to the ones for rent at area grocery stores, was buckled into a seat belt in the back. And like the ones at Food Lion, water had to be poured in at the top.

“You had to carry the water,” he said. “There ain’t no telling how

many five-gallon buckets of water I’ve carried.

And it didn’t have a heater. So, it was just cold water.”

Eventually, he strapped a water heater in the back corner of the truck, allowing him to heat things up a bit.

That uncle had a handful of rental properties that always seemed to need carpet cleaned, and he thought it would make for a good career path for Joe. “He started me out right,” Joe said. “His wife, my aunt, kept the books. So, as I made money, I’d pay him back. I ended up paying everything back, and it worked out great.”

It started out as a family venture, and has remained that way. Joe would enlist the help of his three brothers in the early days to take on bigger jobs.

The youngest, Frank, came on board full time in 1983 after deciding against a career in criminal justice.

“Worked with the state about a year, and couldn’t stand it,” Frank said of his time after graduation from Appalachian State.

He might have driven around in a slightly better van, but like Joe, Frank learned as he went in his early days.

“You got into a house and if you did something and it worked, you tried to remember it,” Frank said. “If it didn’t work, you really remembered it, because you had to pull out your checkbook.”

As Joe and Frank’s experience grew, the technology they used on the job advanced even faster.

“The equipment has come a really long way since then,” Frank said. “(The vans) are almost self-contained because you’ve got a water system on board. You’ve got a heating system on board.

They run off gas, so you really don’t need electricity. You pull in hoses and stuff, and after you vacuum, you’re ready to go.

“Chemistry has come a long way too. There are hundreds more solutions than there were when we started, and they all are great — if you know which one to use.”

Instead of trial and error, Parrish Cleaning Service decided to use education to solve that problem.

“Take a man with experience and give him some education and he’s twice as good,” Frank said.

“I think they’re both important.”

These days, employees take classes through

the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, or IICRC. Inside the office on Powell Street, Frank’s certifications dot the wall facing the front door.

He’s been trained in things like carpet cleaning, upholstery, deodorizing, odor control and water restoration, to name a few.

He took his education one step farther, however, becoming one of only two Master Rug Cleaners in North Carolina.

“I thought, ‘those things have to be cleaned, too,’” Frank said of the Persian rugs he’d see on regular carpet jobs. “So that got me going.”

He started reading and then took a year-long course that involved a couple of trips to Dallas to become certified under a fourth-generation Persian rug expert.

“The lady would go by and throw down about 50 rugs, and you had to go by and identify them,” he said. “It was similar to a college class.

Even the experts can disagree on where they’re from. … Rugs are a whole different breed.

“If you know where they’re made and where they’re from, then you’ve got a list of things you can go to for the problems you might have.

together, some do it before.”

In addition to knowing the rug’s origin, experts also know to watch out for other potential trouble spots, too.

“You get some of these rugs are 100 or so years old, interior designers get a hold of them and what they do is, when there’s a wear spot, they paint into them,” Frank said. “For a cleaner, that’s a catastrophe waiting to happen. So you have to train yourself to look for worn spots on old rugs. Just take you a dry towel and a little bit of water and dab it.”

This knowledge and attention to detail helps him to know how best to clean the rug.

It’s not like running the hose over it, like might happen in a living room. Instead, he brings the rug to the warehouse, where the sand and dust is pounded out by a machine. Then, in most cases, the rug is immersed in a cleaning solution before being dried and returned to its owner.

The average carpet job isn’t nearly as complex, but the staff attacks each one with the same level of precision.

“I never pre-mix anything,” Frank said. “I always wait until I get there and look at it. It

could be a fire or smoke issue. It could be a food issue. Could be a pet issue. There’s not one particular product that handles all of it. My first thing is, ‘what’s the fiber?’ And if you know what the fiber is, you know what the limitations are and what the issues are.”

The rest of the staff maintains that level of quality and care as well.

“I’ve always been a stickler about being on time,” Frank said. “That’s helped us. We schedule you, and we’re on time. Terry’s been with us 25 years, and he runs a truck like I do.

He’d clean my carpet if I couldn’t do it myself.

He’s like I am. Wants to make sure everybody’s OK with everything. Going to be there on time and everything.

“It’s been a good business for us. It really has.”

Laura Price manages the office, which includes coordinating the schedules for the cleaning crews.

“I’ve never done a lot of smart things in my life, but (hiring her) was one of them,” Frank said.

She schedules jobs big and small, and Parrish Cleaning Service is committed to doing all of them well.

“In a small town, little jobs, big jobs, it doesn’t matter,” Joe said. “We did all kinds. We did a good job at either one and just kind of got the reputation of being good at what we do.”

“Word of mouth” business leads them out of the county from time to time, including a recent job in Rocky Mount for a new brewery and another contract for a three-story storage facility.

That project, which covered about 68,000 square feet, took two weeks with crews working 12-15 hours a day.

“I think I might have made a quarter,” Joe laughed. “But I learned what to charge next time.”

It’s not always about the bottom line, after all.

“We’re not the kind that’s going to take all the time,” Joe said. “We try to give a little bit, too. … We were brought up very poor. Our daddy died young. Frank was just three months old when he died. We just came up to work, and my mom was always the kind that liked to give.
