THE GRAND CANYON The Grand Canyon is 18 miles long and more than 6,000 feet deep, showing off two billion years of geological history. The National Park is home to a variety of hiking trips, including those that are challenging and others that are ideal for beginners.

Regardless of the trail chosen, hikers need to take appropriate steps to stay safe and get the most out of their trip.

SEASONS When planning a trip to hike the Grand Canyon, visitors need to consider how the seasons affect the North and South Rims. The North Rim may be cooler and quieter; however, it tends to be under snow in the winter and early spring, with access roads closing too.

On the other hand, the South Rim is accessible all year round; however, this is where 90% of visitors to the park can be found.

TEMPERATURE The temperature in the Grand Canyon can greatly vary depending on the elevation and the season. The bottom of the canyon by the Colorado River can be as much as 30° warmer than on the Rim, with the temperature in the Inner Canyon frequently exceeding 100 °F. Hikers should always bring sun protection and plenty of water.
