2021 Capital District Christian Education Conference

Our Episcopal Team Bishop James L. Davis & Episcopal Supervisor Arelis Davis Bishop James Levert Davis is the Presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop James L. Davis has preached and taught the good news of Jesus the Christ for over 45 years. After seeking the divine guidance of He who called him to higher service in Kingdom building, campaigned for twenty-two months on his mantra – “I Showed Up for Work and God Blew My Mind”. On July 3, 2004, in Indianapolis, Indiana he showed up for an opportunity to serve and was elected and consecrated the 123rd Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church during its 47th Quadrennial General Conference. He was appointed to the 19th Episcopal District which encompasses the Republic of South Africa. While serving his first assignment Bishop Davis’ vision of furthering the legacy of self-help and self-reliance led to many accomplishments while living for four years on the continent from 2004-2008. 0n July 13, 2016, Bishop Davis was appointed to his current position as Presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District at the 50th Quadrennial Session General Conference and 200th Anniversary of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Mother Arelis Beevers Davis serves as Episcopal District Supervisor, Women’s Missionary Society and Young Peoples’ Division of the 2nd Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Western North Carolina, and Washington, D.C.). Before becoming the 2nd Episcopal District Supervisor, she was the 9th and the 19th Episcopal District Supervisor (Republic of South Africa). Mother Davis initiated the “Hope and Healing” ministry for health and wellness support which involved, but was not limited to, breast cancer awareness and HIV/AIDS. Dutifully, she served as First Lady of Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Mother Davis’ travels have included Hong Kong, Bermuda, Bahamas, England, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Brazil, Canada, and East, West and South Africa. Mother Davis recently retired as an exemplary Spanish teacher from Frederick Douglas High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Among her numerous awards and honors are Who’s Who Among Black Americans and the National Hispanic Society. Her community memberships include the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Married to Bishop James L. Davis for over 40 years, her dedication to God and Kingdom building exemplifies the essence of true partnership in ministry and marriage.

Greetings from Presiding Elder Johnny R. Calhoun & First Lady, Reverend Patricia Calhoun We greet you with Jesus’ joy and hallelujah praise!

Welcome to the 2021 Capital District Christian Education Conference (CEC). It has been designed and organized to be impactful and engaging. Our primary aim is to glorify the LORD beyond measure. We pray that it will have a positive and enriching impact upon all the teaching ministries of your church.

“Study to show thyself approved. A worker needs not be ashamed. Rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 Christian Education is a vital component of our faith.

Teaching the fundamentals of the Bible and its practical application, is the purpose of Christian Education. Inspiring believers with the stories, promises and truths in the Bible, while empowering the Body of Christ with the wisdom, understanding and knowledge found in the Word of GOD. Promoting a life-long commitment to reading scripture, while establishing the importance of studying the Bible as a spiritual discipline and doctrine for Christian discipleship.

We need to first thank GOD for our Episcopal leadership - Bishop James Levert Davis & Mother Arelis Davis. Their example and standard of excellence have continually inspired us to exceed expectations. Let me express my appreciation to all of the teachers and participants, without which, today would not have been such a great success. Also, we are so thankful for an amazing team who put in the work to make this year’s CEC a successful gathering. Rev. Karen Myers, our Christian Education Director, led the team. Along with Rev. Lauren Harris, Sis. Francine Wilson, Rev. Aaron Myers, and Revs. Andre & Roxanne Parson. A special shout out to my Executive Assistant - Rev. Alicia Hudnall, for her technical and administrative support. Well done!

Greetings from Capital District Christian Education Director Greetings in the Name of Our Risen Savior and Master Teacher, Jesus Christ!

Thank you for joining us for the first virtual Capital District Christian Education (CE) Conference, in which we declare, “There’s Work to Do—Let’s Not be Ashamed!” Our theme draws from the Capital District’s theme of “A Glorious Crusade for a New Decade,” reminding us all that we have a work to do in the kingdom, especially during and even in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Therefore, establishing a virtual summit was a mandate. Let’s endeavor to ensure that we are working in the kingdom of God and rightly dividing the word of truth—let’s not be ashamed! Let’s get to work!

The sessions we have packed into today’s conference are the building essentials we need to do the work needed for ministry in the 21st century. Take advantage of the interactive and intergenerational sessions that will enrich our congregations, encourage our educators, empower our youth and young adult leaders, and engage our pastors.

I especially want to thank Presiding Elder Johnny R. Calhoun, and first lady Rev. Patricia Calhoun for their leadership. Presiding Elder, I thank you for your confidence in asking me to serve in this capacity and tasking me with the first virtual CE conference. I commend the CE Conference Development Team: Rev. Lauren Harris, Rev. Roxanne Parson, Rev. Andre’ Parson, Rev. Aaron Myers, and Rev. Alicia Hudnall for their enduring patience and invaluable assistance in helping me to plan this conference. Thank you also to our Superintendent of Church Schools, Sis. Francine Wilson.

I thank each of the instructors for accepting this opportunity and embracing it with enthusiasm. Your insight, involvement, creativity, and commitment to Christian Education are priceless. Each participant, we did it all for you. We know you could easily be “zoomed out” by now, so I am grateful you considered this a priority and are here today. I thank each of you.

Greetings from Second Episcopal District Christian Education Co-Directors March 13, 2021 Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

We are honored to bring greetings to the 2021 Capital District Virtual Christian Education Conference under the dynamic leadership of Presiding Elder Johnny Calhoun and First Lady Rev. Patricia Calhoun.

We take this opportunity to thank Rev. Karen Myers for her commitment to the work of Christian Education in the Capital District, Washington Conference, and the Episcopal District.

For almost a year, the word virtual is a “new” synonym for fellowship. We recognize that although our interactions have changed, we remain members in the family of God! We encourage you in this COVID -19 era to: • Wear your mask – it protects you and your neighbor. Let it remind you of the One who breathes on us and strengthens our spirit!

• Wash your hands – it protects you from contamination. Let it remind you of the blood of Jesus that washes and cleanses us from the contaminating effect of sin!

• Keep your distance – again, it protects you and your neighbor. Let it remind you that while you may be separated from each other, no distance, in fact nothing can separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Jesus Christ! (Romans 8:38, NSV) Thank you for the work you do as Christian Educators! We look forward to the work you are about to do for Christian Education. You are appreciated! God loves you and so do we!

Youth Sessions Prayer Power!

Do you know that God still speaks? God wants to give you everything you need to make it through this journey called life. This session gives practical ways on how you can hear from God. Presenter: Rev. Akil Dickens, Emmanuel A.M.E. Rev. Akil Dickens is the Senior Pastor at Emmanuel AME Church sharing his mission to uplift the body of Christ spiritually, mentally, and socially. Dickens is an internationally renowned speaker and teacher. Known for using props to captivate his audience, he provides entertaining yet life-changing encounters for youth and Young adults. he serves as the Director of Youth Ministries for the 2nd Episcopal District; both under the appointment of Bishop James Davis. He formerly served as the Youth Pastor at Ebenezer AME Church (Fort Washington, MD) under Pastors Grainger & Jo Ann Browning. He oversaw 2,000 youth, taught weekly Youth Bible Study, and provided spiritual guidance to the youth. Pastor Akil earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Master of Divinity from Howard University School of Divinity.

P.A.C.T with God (Praise, Acknowledge, Confession, Thanks) Like us, the disciples wanted to know how to pray effectively. Jesus taught them what we know as “The Lord’s Prayer.” We dive deep into its meaning and power in this session.

Presenter: Rev. Brian Wallace, Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Rev. Brian J. Wallace is on the Ministerial Staff at Mount Pisgah AME Church, in Columbia, Maryland. Under the leadership of Senior Pastor Rev. C. Michele Langston, he is a Youth Minister and collaborates with different groups that work with and support youth and young adult programs. Rev. Wallace has a heart for young people and believes that GOD has a plan for everyone despite their past or present circumstance. He stands on Romans 8:28 “…and we know that all things work together for good to them that love GOD, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Journaling has proven psychological benefits; but did you know that journaling can help you in your spiritual walk? Examine the blessings of writing God’s vision for your life and keeping record of your spiritual goals and progress.

Presenter: Rev. Tiffany Brooks, Reid Temple A.M.E. Rev. Tiffany Brooks was born and raised in Queens, NY and completed her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Maryland: College Park. She then went on to complete and receive her Master of Education degree in education policy, curriculum, and instruction from American University. She is currently completing her Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary and is currently serving as the Minister to Young Adults at Reid Temple AMEC. When she is not serving in the church space, she is developing curriculums for different nonprofit education organizations and school spaces, engaging in food justice work, leading various initiatives with a variety of church and social justice leaders and working professionally at WAMU, the DMV's local NPR radio station.

Young Adult Leadership Foundations Sessions I CAN Make a Difference!

Our faith walk is more than just attending church every Sunday and paying our tithes. Jesus wants us to be his disciples learning from him daily and maturing in spiritual things. This session will teach you how to move from membership to discipleship.

Presenter: Rev. Russell St. Bernard, Kingdom Fellowship A.M.E. Rev. Russell St. Bernard is the director for ministry operations at Kingdom Fellowship AME Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the founder of After the Music Stops, a full-service youth ministry company as well as founder of Ministry Pivot, a company dedicated to assisting leaders and churches seize opportunities for growth.

God’s Word 4 You! Do you know what you believe? Do you know why you believe them? This session will teach you the foundation of our Christian faith by breaking down the Apostles’ Creed.

Presenter: Rev. Milwina Locklear, Reid Temple A.M.E. Rev. Milwina Locklear (a.k.a. Rev. Mel) currently serves on the ministerial staff as an itinerate elder at Reid Temple AME Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Mark E. Whitlock, Jr. She serves as the Vice President of Academic Affairs for the Reid Temple Bible College. Her passion is in teaching and equipping disciples for Christ. Rev. Mel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from Nyack College School of Business & Leadership, A Master of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership from Nyack College School of Business & Leadership, and in May 2018 received the Master of Divinity Degree from the Samuel DeWitt School of Theology.

10 C’s in 2021 You’ll hear Christians say we are “living under grace,” however, does that mean the 10 Commandments are irrelevant? This session will dive into the 10 Commandments and why Jesus hasn’t completely done away with the Law. Presenter: Rev. Latisha Cokely, Payne Memorial A.M.E. Rev. Latisha Thomas Cokely is the pastor of Payne Memorial AME Church in Jessup, Maryland. Prior to this, she served as pastor of Adams Inspirational AME Church in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Pastor Tish served at Reid Temple AME in Glenn Dale, Maryland, under Rev. Dr. Lee P. Washington. An accomplished and creative writer, she began an inspirational blog 2017, authors children’s books (Aleko Wanted a Mohawk and Vic Takes on Billy the Bully). She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she feels a mandate on her life to encourage and uplift others with the promises of God’s Word. She has B.A. from Savannah State University, a M.S. from American University, and a M.Div. from Howard University. Pastor Tish and her husband, Rev. Dwight Cokely are the parents of three amazing and inspirational children: Dominic, Truth and Vic’Tor. She serves with a humble and grateful heart, knowing that God has done great and mighty things in her life, yet “Eyes have not seen…

Adults’ Sessions Revisiting Spiritual Disciples: Inward Disciplines Participants in this break out session will have a brief overview of the Nature of the Spiritual Disciplines; The Purpose of the Spiritual Disciplines; The Process of the Spiritual Disciplines; and The Product of the Spiritual Disciplines. Instructor will discuss the Inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting and studying. Instructor will introduce the necessity of the four Inward Disciplines …meditation, prayer, fasting, and study—which will improve a person's spiritual life. Instructor will discuss the fundamentals of the inward disciplines.

Rev. Roslyn Roberts, Hemingway A.M.E. Reverend Roslyn C. Roberts received a Baccalaureate of Science Degree in Psychology from Bowie State University and obtained a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University’s School of Divinity (May 2003). Reverend Roberts is a devoted wife and loving mother to two sons and one daughter. She also serves as Director of Rapid Rehousing and Youth Transitional Housing for Housing Up in the District of Columbia. Reverend Roberts is anointed by God and appointed as an Itinerant Elder within the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Revisiting Spiritual Disciples: Outward Disciplines This course will specifically address the four Outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. Upon completion of this course, the participants will understand the necessity of the four Outward Disciplines … simplicity, solitude, submission, and service — reveal what people need to do to improve the world around them. Instructor will introduce the outward disciplines.

Presenter: Rev. Edith Robinson, New Creation A.M.E. Rev. Edith Robinson is the Christian Education Director/Church School Superintendent at New Creation AME Church in Fort Washington, Maryland. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park with a bachelor’s degree in Family Studies.

She earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University School of Divinity.

In addition to her ministry in the church, Rev. Robinson has dedicated herself to helping people resolve conflict through mediation. For the past 21 years she has served as a mediator

“There’s Work to Do—Let’s Not Be Ashamed!” throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area, mediating disputes involving families, workplace, child custody, and neighbors.

She also assists in facilitating forums for local county and city residents. Rev. Robinson lives by the words of Jesus as recorded in Matthew 22:37-39, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, Love your neighbor as yourself.” With the help of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Robinson is spreading this message to as many people as possible through teaching, preaching, and her interaction with others.

Revisiting Spiritual Disciples: Corporate Disciplines This class will specifically address the Corporate Disciplines of Confession, Worship, Guidance and Celebration according to Foster’s book. Upon completion of this course, the participants will understand the necessity of Corporate Discipline. Instructor will discuss the fundamentals of the Corporate Disciplines of Confession, Worship, Guidance and Celebration for spiritual growth and development.

Presenter: Rev. C. Michele Langston, Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Reverend C. Michele Langston a servant of The Most High God was appointed in 2016, by The Right Reverend William P. DeVeaux, Sr., to Mount Pisgah AME Church in Columbia, MD, where she is currently Senior Pastor. Reverend Langston is the Financial Secretary for the Capitol District of the Washington Annual Conference, a member of the Executive Board of the Capitol District Church School Executive Council and a member of the Washington Annual Conference Trustees; she serves on the Board of Instructors, Ministerial Efficiency Committee, and the Planning Committee. She has served as the Registrar and Assistant Registrar of the Capitol District Church School and the Recording Financial Secretary for the Second Episcopal District Women in Ministry.

Currently, she is a board member of the Howard County Detention Center, and previously served as a financial advisor for various churches and community associations. She stands on, I Corinthians 2:9 “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man or women, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” She Loves the Lord!

Christian Educators’ (Teachers) Sessions Teachers’ Fundamentals: The Catechism This class will explore principles of effectively teaching the catechism to young adults and adults. The Instructor will survey the catechism, explore strategies for teaching selected sections and provide examples of effective techniques.

Presenter: Rev. Dr. Anita Gould, Agape A.M.E. The Rev. Dr. Anita J. Gould is the Pastor of Agape AME. Dr. Gould evolved as a leader in the ministry of discipleship development. She has traveled to equip the saints for the work of the church, as an instructor of “Identifying and Developing Your Spiritual Gifts” for classes and workshops engaging pastors and leaders of congregations. She is the founder of New Freedom Ministries, LLC, exercises her gifts as a Discernment Advocate, designing and conducting training experiences which restore spiritual vitality in individuals and congregations as they discover their God-given purpose. A graduate of DC Public Schools, Morgan State (College) University – BS Degree in Education; Howard University School of Divinity – M. Div.; and Wesley Theological Seminary – D. Min. Program for Church Leadership Excellence. She is grateful to be “enabled by Him who IS able” (Eph. 3:20).

Tips for Teaching in the Virtual Environment Participants will have a brief overview of how to teach effectively in a virtual setting. Instructor will suggest tools to plan virtual classes effectively, teach with clarity while controlling and encouraging feedback, and how to create engaging tasks, as well as offer tips for beginners.

Presenter: Rev. Keithlyn Warner, St. Mark A.M.E. The Reverend Keithlyn S. Warner was born in Trinidad and Tobago.

In 1886, he graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science. In 2001, he graduated from Payne Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity. Rev. Warner is currently on staff at Saint Mark AME Church, Oxon Hill Md. Rev. Warner is actively involved in technological training for the community. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Spiritual Disciplines for Teachers Participants will get a brief overview of the Nature of the Spiritual Disciplines; The Purpose of the Spiritual Disciplines; The Process of the Spiritual Disciplines; and The Product of the Spiritual Disciplines. Instructor will discuss the Inward, Outward and Corporate Disciplines according to Richard Foster’s or Adele Calhoun’s book.

Presenter: Rev. Aaron Myers, Sr., Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Reverend Aaron D. Myers Sr. Is the first gentleman at Gaines Chapel AME Church and serves with His wife Pastor Karen A. Myers. As part of his ministerial duties, he serves as Christian Ed. Director and head of the men’s ministry. Rev. Myers has been teaching discipleship for many years.

His knowledge of the various disciplines we practice for a closer fellowship with God has marked his walk of faith! His love for the discipline of nurturing others plays a key role in leading the Class Leaders at Gaines Chapel AMEC and his part of a prison ministry that saves and feeds the souls of the inmates through worship and the preached Word of God! His favorite scripture is 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Christian Education Directors’ Sessions The Role of the CE Director: What does CE look like in my church?

Participants will briefly overview of the definition of Christian Education, how it nurtures faith and is an essential element in the mission of the church. It will touch on the importance of organizing the Sunday school as well as the need for classes that feed young adults, single parents, family enrichment and the special needs for men and women.

Presenter: Rev. Andre’ Parson, Davis Memorial A.M.E. Reverend Andre’ M Parson answered his call to ministry at the Star of Bethlehem A.M.E. Church and is an ordained local Deacon in the AME Church. At the Star of Bethlehem, he served as Minister to Men and in the Prison Ministry and led Evangelism and was a Trustee. God deployed him to Davis Memorial A.M.E where he copastors with his beloved wife, the Reverend Roxanne G. Parson of 34 years. At Davis, he continues to serve as Minister to Men, Director of Christian Ed, Prison Ministry at the Howard County Detention Center and is the pro-tem of the Trustee Board at Davis.

He has M. ED and is a retired educator and administrator, having worked in the Department of Juvenile Services-Baltimore County, Baltimore City Public schools, and the Woodland Job Corps Center for a total of 40 years.

He has four children and six grandchildren, who are his precious jewels and a heritage from the Lord. His favorite scripture is Prov. 3:5.

New Members: Developing a Basic Framework This session discusses basic tenets of our faith as a critical component of new members classes and discuss the essential elements when crafting your church’s New Member’s Curriculum. Key Components: Understanding Salvation: My Lord and My God, What’s New, What Different, Understanding My Sword: Learning how to Use My Weapon and Understanding My Church: AME and local Church Structure; and Understanding What’s Next: My walk, my service, and my Gifts.

Presenter: Rev. Karen Brooks, Falls Road A.M.E. Rev. Karen D. Brooks is an Itinerant Deacon and was ordained on April 21, 2006, by Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Jr. She has served under Rev. C. Michele Langston at Cowdensville AME; Rev. Arthur B. Glover at Falls Road AME; and is currently serving under 22

Rev. Raymond F. Edmonds, Jr. at Falls Road AME. She studied at Bethel Seminary of the East and St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute. She is currently the Church School Superintendent at Falls Road and the Baltimore Area Superintendent for the Capital District, Director of Vacation Bible School; Coordinator of the Black History Month Activities, and Church School Teacher at Falls Road, and is a member of the Capital District’s Church School Executive Committee where she is the Registrar. Rev. Brooks hails from Chestertown, MD, which is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and her favorite scripture is John 15:13 – Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friend.

Implementing Small Group Study This class will address the purpose and process of developing a small group ministry and look at how to measure the progress of group and to evaluate warning signs and signs of successful groups.

Presenter: Rev. Janet R. Habersham, Reid Temple A.M.E. Reverend Janet Habersham has been involved in the Church as well as Christian Education since her childhood years. As a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Savannah, GA, she actively served in Sunday school and was often the churches delegate at Savannah South District and 6th Episcopal District events. In recent years, Janet has severed as the Christian Education Director for Metropolitan A.M.E. Church and engaged in every level of Christian Education within the A.M.E. Church. Currently she serves as Cocoordinator of the 2nd Episcopal District Prayer Ministry, as a teacher and member of the Washington Annual Conference Christian Education Ministry and as the Spiritual Advisor for the Cancer Care Ministry at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church. She is a member of Reid’s Women’s Ministry and Higher Education Ministry. In addition to her role as a Christian Educator, Rev. Janet has served as a trainer for corporate America, taught High School Mathematics, was the Yearbook Advisor, and tutored. Janet has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Emory University and a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary with a concentration in Old Testament. Janet believes deeply that Christians are a physical manifestation of the spirit of God and, above all, “we are called to represent God’s power through LOVE.”

Pastors’ Sessions The Pastor’s Role in Christian Education This class will address the necessity of Pastor’s participation in Christian Education and how it promotes learning and leads to the vitality of the church and ultimately spiritual growth among members.

Presenter: Rev. Raymond Edmonds, Jr., Falls Road A.M.E. Rev. Raymond F. Edmonds, Jr. was born and raised in Chesapeake, VA and is the son of Raymond and Elnor Edmonds. Rev. Edmonds received his early education in the Chesapeake Public School System.

He is a proud graduate of Morgan State University where he majored in Philosophy with a concentration in Religious Studies. Rev. Edmonds is employed at Social Security Administration as a Human Resource Specialist. In April 1994, Rev. Edmonds was ordained an Itinerant Elder by Bishop Frederick Calhoun James. In October 1995, Bishop James appointed him to give birth to a new ministry, Gethsemane A.M.E. Church. He faithfully served that congregation for 13 years. He was assigned as Pastor of Falls Road A.M.E. Church by Bishop Adam Jefferson Richardson, Jr. on October 18, 2008. Rev. Edmonds is committed to kingdom building and he loves the Lord with his whole heart. His favorite passage of scripture is "And we know that all things work together for good, to those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose." Rev. Edmonds is married to Rev. Jerri Edmonds and they are the proud parents of Raymond III and Cierra.

Small Group Ministry This class will address the purpose and process of developing a small group ministry and look at how to measure the progress of group and to evaluate warning signs and signs of successful groups.

Small Group II Best Practices in Small Groups, Models that Work This class will continue to address the purpose and process of developing a small group ministry and how to measure the progress. Further discussion will allow participants to share successful models.

Presenter: Rev. Vernon Ware, Pilgrim A.M.E. Reverend Vernon Ware serves as the Senior Pastor of Pilgrim AME Church in Northeast, Washington DC. Rev. Ware has a unique style of preaching and teaching which is relevant, impactful, and empowering. He has been blessed to proclaim God’s Word both nationally and internationally. He believes that ministry should change lives, encourage hearts, inspire minds, and strengthen souls! Rev. Ware received his Master of Divinity degree from the Howard University School of Divinity where he also served as Student Government President. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master of Science degree in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University. Rev. Ware’s favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11 and he believes that with God, all things are possible, and God always has a plan despite how things may look. He gives God the honor, the praise, and the glory for all that God has done in his life and for all that is to come.

Closing Plenary Session Evangelism 101 The closing plenary session provides a basic understanding of evangelism, its purpose and priority in Christian Education and as a tool for church for effective church growth.

Presenter: Dr. Gerald Folsom, Hemingway A.M.E. Rev. Dr. Gerald Folsom, son of late Mary Nell and George Thomas Folsom, is originally from Quitman, Georgia and recently retired from the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Division Chief, Senior Transportation Specialist in Washington, D.C. He served on the ministerial staff of Community of Hope AME church under the direction of Rev. Tony Lee in Hillcrest Heights, MD. He served as ministry leader of Community of Hope’s Social Justice and Public Service Ministry and Men’s Ministry leader.

On Friday, April 11, 2014, Pastor Folsom was ordained as an itinerant elder in the AME Church at the Washington Annual AME Conference and on April 2016 was appointed the 20th Pastor of Wayman Memorial AME, “The Miracle on Washington Boulevard” at the Washington Annual AME Conference by Bishop William DeVeaux. On May 19, 2018, Bishop James L. Davis appointed Rev. Folsom as Pastor of St Stephens AME Church, “The Community Church,” in Elkridge, MD. On September 22, 2019, he was then appointed as Pastor of Hemingway Memorial AME Church in District Heights, MD. He attended Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University) in Atlanta, GA. He holds the following academic degrees: Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from Howard University in Washington, D.C., Master of Divinity from Howard University, M.A. in Organizational Communication from Bowie State University in Bowie, MD, and B.S. in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College in Albany, NY. He is a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He is married to Joyce Folsom and they reside in Upper Marlboro, MD.
