2022/2023

WE’RE ALMOST THERE! CAMPAIGN TO SAVE HARVEY RANCH RECEIVES MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS With our December 31st deadline approaching, John Muir Land Trust has received donations and grants of $3.4 million toward the $4 million needed to acquire and permanently protect Harvey Ranch, including two recent contributions of $250,000 and $550,000. These milestone gifts are made possible by the support of donors like you and your neighbors who have made contributions in all sizes. Funders look closely at the depth of community support. Your enthusiasm leaves no doubt that the 143-acre property in the hills above Saint Mary’s College in Moraga is viewed as a community treasure. If we succeed, a protected Harvey Ranch will open the gateway to a 15,000-acre wilderness wonderland that will introduce the delights of exploring nature to generations to come. To help close the final gap, the JMLT Board is making a generous match offer of $2 for every $1 received up to $100,000. That triples the impact of new donations!

Dear Friends, JOHN MUIR LAND TRUST

There’s so much good news in this issue. We’re closing in on Harvey Ranch! An essential acquisition in the hills of Lamorinda, the ranch will help protect one of our largest wildlife refuges. A grant of $550,000 from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation puts us in a very select group, as the foundation funds only those few landscapes in the Bay Area that they consider unique and irreplaceable.

It was just over a year ago that we breached the levee at Pacheco Marsh. Much progress has been made to bring back this degraded salt marsh along Suisun Bay. California State Parks announced in late August a grant of $2 million that will help fund trails, kayak launches, bridges, picnic areas, and interpretive features. The restored marsh will provide vital habitat for marine and terrestrial wildlife, and serve as an educational resource for kids of all ages. Family Harvest Farm in Pittsburg continues to grow healthy food for local residents, and to grow careers for young people with experience in the foster care system. A new class of apprentices is reaping a record-breaking harvest this season. Please come to our Winter Festival and see for yourself. Together we’re leaving a lasting legacy of protected lands for future generations, and sheltering the animals and plants that need wild places for survival. Thank you for your generous support! Sincerely,

Workforce Development Coordinator, Family Harvest Farm

WCB MARKS 75 YEARS OF SUCCESS The Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) was created by state legislation in 1947 to administer a capital outlay program for wildlife conservation and public recreation. For decades WCB has been a driving force in California for land acquisition, habitat restoration, and the development of wildlife-oriented public access facilities. We’re very grateful to WCB for providing major funding toward numerous JMLT projects, most recently including the acquisition of Almond Ranch and the restoration of Pacheco Marsh.

TWO CONSERVATION HEROES RETIRE Beverly Lane and Ayn Wieskamp, two distinguished members of the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors, have retired. During their nearly three decades on the board, Beverly and Ayn have championed preservation of open spaces and access to public parks and trails. Thanks to the hard work of people like Beverly and Ayn, the residents of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties enjoy some of the best neighborhood trail networks in the country.

PASSING OF THE SHOVEL JMLT Has A New Stewardship Director! Stewardship is an important activity that we don’t highlight as often as we should. It is hard work—sweat and toil that goes into maintaining protected places for safe public recreation and for the health of resident plants and animals. Stewardship activities cover the gamut from clearing downed trees, keeping gates and fences in working order, doing biological assessments, monitoring for safety issues, fire abatement, and countless other tasks. At JMLT, stewardship director is a position that requires an impressive range of skills. The position is supported by volunteers who generously donate their time and muscle power. Our longtime stewardship director, Glen Lewis, has just retired. Having grown up in Martinez means that Glen has a lifelong appreciation James (left) and Glen install a for the East Bay landscape and the special places he has so capably new kiosk for visitors to Sky Ranch. stewarded. Glen joined JMLT after a 25-year career as Fire Captain with the Moraga Orinda Fire Department, and a stint as a ranger with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). We are extraordinarily fortunate to welcome James Wilson as our new stewardship director. After impactful careers in environmental interpretation and stewardship with EBRPD and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, James considers himself a naturalist in all respects. A lifelong resident of Martinez, James holds a BA in Environmental Studies and Science Communication from UC Santa Cruz. It is our sincere hope that Glen will find time to volunteer for JMLT when he’s not at his cabin in the mountains and we’ll look for him hiking and bicycling out on our trails. Congratulations Glen, and welcome James!

UPDATES

FROM THE FIELD We’ve asked James to keep us informed of interesting things he does and sees when he’s out on JMLT lands. Recently James gave us greater appreciation of the humble tarweed he found at Almond Ranch. Endemic to California, it is a primary nectar resource for native bees. John Muir himself wrote about it as

“... a most extraordinary outgush of plant-life, at the very driest time of the whole year … like a resurrection of the gold of April.” Sign up for eNews to receive updates from James at jmlt.org/enews PAG E F O U R

Pacheco Marsh Awarded $2 Million Grant From California State Parks In September JMLT was among 25 recipients who shared a $46.2 million investment to build healthier communities by creating and improving recreational facilities in local parks. This was funded by Proposition 68 through the Rural Recreation and Tourism and Regional Park Programs—just the latest example of the vital role ballot propositions now play in conservation financing. The 232-acre Pacheco Marsh is located along Suisun Bay. The $2 million grant brings total funds raised to $26.5 million over the past two decades. The marsh is being restored to a natural state after a century of industrial use.

Learn more: jmlt.org/pachecomarsh “A year ago we breached the levee and allowed tidal waters to flow back into the restored marsh. This generous $2 million grant advances our work to provide accessible kayak boat launches, picnic tables, trails, interpretive features, restrooms, an entry bridge, signage, and parking lot.” —Linus Eukel, Executive Director of JMLT

How Stewardship Is Funded We’re often asked how we fund all the work needed to maintain our properties, and the answer is you! Donations from the JMLT community make this possible. We rely on the Annual Fund, Leadership Circle, and gifts not directed to specific acquisition campaigns to keep our special places open and safe for you to enjoy. If you’d like to make a donation today, please visit jmlt.org/donate. Thank you!

“Spending time in the outdoors not only helps us connect with our communities, but it can also support our mental and physical health. A healthier California is good for all of us.” —Armando Quintero, California State Parks Director

“These park improvements are an exciting development as we invest in communities across our diverse state. All Californians deserve access to recreational opportunities, so that they can enjoy the outdoors and the cultural, historic, and natural resources California offers.” —Wade Crowfoot, California Secretary for Natural Resources PAG E F I V E

60 Million

In acres of land, what land trusts across the United States have collectively conserved to date.

60 Million minus 143 THE REMAINING ACRES NEEDED TO REACH THE 2030 GOAL IF WE SUCCEED WITH HARVEY RANCH. Every acre counts! Especially when the acres are as essential as these critical 143 in Lamorinda.

Wendy Markel

DONOR SPOTLIGHT “We need cow patties. Could you help?” Wendy’s love of nature comes from living in her native England, where “you could take a path over farmers’ lands from village to village. The rolling hills and valleys just seemed to always be there, and to be a part of who you are.”

It was not the average inquiry we receive in the JMLT inbox, but then again, Wendy Markel is not your average supporter. The first thing that strikes you about Wendy is her energetic enthusiasm—whether expressed by wide smiles as she meets new acquaintances at a JMLT event, her boundless energy while exploring a new trail, or her “leave no stone unturned” approach to finding natural fuel for the Rossmoor Ceramics Studio fire pit. Wendy first learned of land trusts when she and her husband leased a beautiful spot on Tomales Bay and she encountered the conservation work of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust. After a move to Rossmoor in Contra Costa County, she discovered JMLT and decided to attend our Gala at the John Muir National Historic Site a few years ago. A member of the Rossmoor Trails Club, Wendy recently hiked with the group on Harvey Ranch. “It’s not as dramatic a landscape, as say, the Arctic,” she observes, having traveled this summer circumnavigating the archipelago of Svalbard by ship to a point near the North Pole. “But, we need beautiful everyday nature nearby. I’m worried by the endless concreting of natural places around us. The land needs to breathe for the health of people and other living things. Even places that seem ‘useless’ to some, are so useful!” At this point you’re surely wondering, “Could we?” Indeed, we could! Cows graze on a number of JMLT properties but not in places or in sufficient quantities to make the harvesting of 10 garbage bags of cow patties an easy task. So, we guided Wendy and her ceramics club fellows to cow-patty-rich Briones Regional Park where they found an ample supply of fuel. Wendy reports that the ceramicmaking event was a huge success.

VOLUNTEER

P r o te c t i n g t he pla ces that m ake the E as t Bay s peci al

V-O-Cal Volunteers build New Trail At Painted Rock Unfazed by lack of shade and high temperatures over a weekend in May, nearly 70 sweaty volunteers laid out the path, dug dirt, removed plants, leveled out bumps and turns, and smoothed the ground for a delightful half mile of new trail that takes visitors from the top of Painted Rock in Moraga northerly to hundreds of adjacent acres that will open to the public in the near future. This was another successful collaboration between Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal, v-o-cal.org) and JMLT. Our respective missions are made for each other. JMLT acquires private land to protect in perpetuity. V-O-Cal provides a large-scale volunteer workforce for trail construction and major renovation, habitat restoration, and land stewardship activities. This powerhouse combination produces enormous community value thanks to the many who generously contribute time and money. Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary provided generous funding, and Acalanes Union High School District provided a base at Campolindo High. Painted Rock is best known as the place where generations of high schoolers have painted school-spirited messages for the motorists passing below. This highly visible landmark is being transformed from a literal signpost along Moraga Road into the anchor of a new 505-acre park that everyone will enjoy.

“I am so proud of our volunteers! The biggest challenge was undoubtedly working in the hot sun. Everyone on the trail made amazing efforts, often stretching beyond what they thought they could do. On Sunday evening our crews were sweaty, dirty, exhausted, and so happy!” —Eliot Hudson, Project Lead for V-O-Cal and Board Member of JMLT PAG E T H I R T E E N

YEARS

Spotlight On JOHN MUIR COMMUNITY HEALTH FUND In 2018 John Muir Community Health Fund (CHF) partnered with JMLT to create a business plan for what was JMLT’s newest venture—Family Harvest Farm (FHF). CHF encouraged collaborating agencies to refer and support transition-age foster youth in the program, and secured resources to get the farm established. “John Muir Community Health Fund’s grant program supports initiatives that address the root causes of health disparities and health inequities for residents of central and eastern Contra Costa County. Family Harvest Farm is doing just that with its program for transition-age foster youth by providing them with work experience as farm apprentices, teaching them life and socio-emotional skills, and delivering wraparound services to help these young people achieve long-term employment and/ or pursue higher education. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to help John Muir Land Trust plan for and launch this impactful health initiative.” — Lillian Roselin, Executive Director, CHF Since inception in 1997, CHF has invested more than $31 million in health initiatives by applying a unique process to identify the area’s most pressing health needs and the most effective ways to address them. JMLT thanks CHF for their initial seed funding and continued partnership throughout the years. With their support, FHF has been operating for three successful years.
