JOHN LYONS LABOUR NEWS January 2016

STANDING UP FOR WORKING FAMILIES EDUCATION

PRIMARY CARE

Labour always protected class sizes even during the worst of the economic crisis. And as soon as resources allowed we moved to reduce class sizes at primary and secondary level with the recruitment of 2,260 new teachers, resource teachers and SNAs in 2016. There has been an 11.7% increase in the number of SNA posts in our schools since Labour entered government.

Since 2011, 43 state-of-the-art primary care centres have opened with another 110 at advanced or initial planning stages. We will continue to invest in the primary care network to ensure that families across the country have access to enhanced primary care facilities in their own community.

We are now committed to delivering the smallest class sizes in the history of the state. We will end prefab education completely through a new €3.6 billion capital investment in new schools and classrooms and the refurbishment of schools in older buildings. This is an extension of the highly successful €2 billion schools capital programme 2012 and 2016 which saw more new schools being built and older schools modernized than during the boom years.

We have already rolled out the landmark Asthma cycle of care for children and the adult Diabetes cycle of care. The rollout of free GP care for the Under 6s, the over 70s and now children between six and eleven is transforming access to primary care in Ireland. We will ensure that all school going children have free GP access as well as then moving to ensure that every adult in the entire country is also entitled to free GP care.

CHILDCARE Labour in government has ensured substantial investment in childcare to help families where both parents are in the workplace. This includes the extension of the free pre-school year to two years. We also introduced a new scheme from September 2016 which will allow fathers in employment to take two weeks’ paid paternity leave. We will now ensure three additional months of paid parental leave. This protects the existing six months of paid maternity leave but provides three additional months of paid parental leave that can be shared between both parents. It will ensure that every child can be cared for by their parents for the first 9 months of their life.

Honest and Effective Representation
