JOHN LYONS TD “Best for Ballymun”

NEW TENANT PURCHASE SCHEME

I have been calling for a new scheme to be put in place for people to buy their council houses. I am delighted to see the new Incremental Purchase Scheme which came into effect on January 1st will allow people in council houses to buy their home. Tenants will be entitled to a discount of between 40%-60% (depending on income level). This is great news for people living in Council houses in Ballymun who are looking to buy their homes.

BALLYMUN MUSIC PROGRAMME

The Ballymun Music Programme is something that brings us all great pride in our community. I have been able to secure €70,000 in funding for the project, which means it is fully funded until Summer 2016.

REGENERATION SECURED

Secured funding to finish the Ballymun regeneration from the Minister for Housing in addition to: • Completion of the Warmers Home Area Based Pilot Scheme that upgraded the insulation in 100s of Ballymun homes • €4.6 million in funding for 25 new homes in the Coultry Terrace development • Works which removed pyrite from approximately 124 homes in Sillogue (Barnewall and Marewood)

PROTECTING OUR SCHOOLS

Forced U-turn to protect extra teachers for Ballymun DEIS schools and preserved the pupil teacher ratio for all Ballymun schools.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES

This government has raised the minimum wage twice. Since January 1st, the minimum wage now stands at €9.15. If re-elected, I will ensure that further minimum wage increases are high on the agenda.

SOCIAL WELFARE RATES – PROTECTED AND INCREASED

We brought back the Christmas Bonus, we increased the Pensions, increased Child Benefit, and increased the Respite Care grant. Protecting our most vulnerable has always been a top priority of mine and I want to continue with that work on behalf of the people of Ballymun.

LIVING WAGE

I have always believed that work should pay well. I have been campaigning for a Living Wage to be introduced in Ireland. The Living Wage allows people to live, rather than just survive. Currently, the Living Wage has been set at €11.50 per hour. I am glad to see companies like Ikea and Aldi have signed up to the campaign and are paying their employees a Living Wage. If re-elected into government, Labour will go even further and ensure that all State and public sector employees are paid the Living Wage.

If you have any queries - local, national or personal do not hesitate to contact me.

YOUTH GUARANTEE

The Youth Guarantee pilot project which I secured saw almost 600 young people in Ballymun supported into jobs, work experience, education or training. Six in ten young people were offered further education or training, while four in ten were offered work experience or employment.
