Growing up in coastal Massachusetts, John Critchley began as a dishwasher and prep cook at the Red Lion Inn in Cohasset when he was just 14 years old. In 1997, he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY and went to work as a sauté and grill chef at Ford’s Colony Dining Room in Williamsburg, Virginia before trying his hand at pastry at Trellis in the same town. Trading Williamsburg for Boston, Critchley worked in the city’s top restaurants, including Clio, Uni Sashimi Bar and Toro. Critchley left the helm at Toro to work as a harvester for Island Creek Oyster Co. in Duxbury, Massachusetts, indulging his passion for sustainable seafood. In 2008, Critchley joined Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants as the opening chef of Miami’s Area 31, honored by Esquire Magazine as one of the “Best New Restaurants” of 2009. In late 2010, he relocated to DC, assuming the Executive Chef position at Urbana Restaurant and Wine Bar at the Hotel Palomar. Critchley’s commitment to local sourcing and sustainability helped earn Urbana the 2012 Mayor’s Award for Sustainability, while Critchley himself took home top honors at the DC leg of the American Lamb Jam tour the same year. Already fully entrenched in the Mid-Atlantic’s local grower network, Critchley taps his farmer resources, not to mention the produce from BOURBON STEAK’s own chef garden, to create vibrant presentations that spotlight pristine ingredients.

Joe Ireland and Julie Weber are the directors of the Dupont Circle design firm J.D. Ireland Interior Architecture and Design. Named House Beautiful’s “Next Wave” of top national design firms, they design residential and commercial spaces nationwide. They have transformed some of the area’s most desired homes, restaurant spaces and retail shops into timeless works of art and architecture.

Critics have described their work as “elegant and comfortable,” “soothing,” “fresh,” “hip,” “clean” and “a blend of contemporary with traditional.” The creative duo has been described as “innovative thinkers concerned with form and function” who “take care to weave the client’s taste in seamlessly with their own keen eye.”

Joe Ireland followed the traditional transition from apprentice to master.

He brings unique and desired elements to every design. Julie trained as an interior architect and emphasizes comfort, functionality, and classic beauty in her design style.

James Cornwell’s experience in fashion is vast. He boasts an impressive client portfolio, including Neiman Marcus, Mango, Bloomingdales, Sabring Soto (HGTV), Will Thomas (Fox 5), Angie Goff (News 9), Arch Campbell, Ted Koppel, Ryan Zimmerman (Nationals), Santino Quaranta (DC United) and Brian Orakpo (Washington Redskins). He has worked with Instyle Magazine, Washington Life Magazine, Today’s Health and Wellness, Jaci Reid, Ford Models, Elite, Next, T.H.E., Americas Next Top Model-Smart Water, Adeler Jewelers and JJ Singh Designs. James is, also, proprietor of Cornwell Styling, the Art Director for PR at Partners and Tim Coburn Photography, Co-Host of Fashion BS and Stylist and Art Director for Washington Life Magazine fashion shoots.

Luca Giovannini and Charles M. Tappan Jr., form the team that creates our mixology section. Luca discovered his passion for food and drink in his hometown in the north of Italy. After working in Europe, he landed in Washington and perfected his skill of combining European and American styles of drink. Charles is a founding member of Veneràte Group LLC. He launched the company, leaving a career in capital markets, to elevate cocktail culture through creativity, classical knowledge, craft dedication and teaching.

WOMEN’S STYLIST Robin Fisher has worked in the fashion industry for over 15 years.

Her experience has spanned from a Designer Bridge buyer for a major retail department store to an international production manager for private designer labels. Success in retail was all about projecting the style choices that retail shoppers would make. So, it should be no surprise that her greatest joy during those years was assisting others in developing the individual style and image they wished to project to the world. Her passion for fashion truly rests on seeing others look beautiful and confident while achieving their personal goals.

Summer is here. With it comes idyllic hours relaxing or time spent in motion during annual family vacations. Family sojourns come in different stripes with distinct features. But, one thing is certain - summer trips are always anticipated and enjoyed. This month’s cover story is truly special. “2013:The Year of Italian Culture” explores an amazing cultural program mounted by the Italian Embassy, taking place throughout the United States. From art to science to social media, this campaign covers it all. Read thoughts from the Ambassador of Italy and learn more about upcoming events.

What if you were to discover that the foundation of the American ideal - “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain Unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” - was greatly influenced by a Tuscan from Poggio a Caiano? A man named Filippo Mazziei, physician and promoter of liberty, who befriended Thomas Jefferson? Who wrote in a pamphlet prior to the Declaration that “All men by nature (are) equally free and independent” and who President Kennedy in his book, A Nation of Immigrants, declares as the source of President Jefferson’s inspiration? Would you be surprised? Probably not. As an immigrant nation, we understand that the strength of our country derives from those who have journeyed to this land. Nearly all of us arrived from somewhere else. And, Italian contributions have held some of the greatest influence in The United States since its inception, since its discovery.

2013: The Year of Italian Culture Open House

“ITALIANS AND AMERICANS HAVE MORE IN COMMON THAN ONE COULD EVER IMAGINE. OUR PEOPLES ARE LED BY INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND THE SAME SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY” With the exploration of the New World by Christopher Columbus, through four voyages mounted from 1492-1504) the Italian footprint begins its tread. Amerigo Vespucci furthered the path when he explored this hemisphere between 1499-1502.

While neither man set foot on the US mainland, (Columbus did reach Puerto Rico) both The United States of America and the city of Washington, District of Columbia, are named after these explorers. Such was the importance of their discoveries. But, it is not just a city and the country that are Italian namesakes.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn, is named after Giovanni da Verrazano. He was the first to explore New York Bay and subsequently settled in what would become New York City. The list goes on and on.

Of course, when speaking of Italian influence in the United States, many speak of the early 20th century. It is undeniable that the two largest immigrant groups to reach American shores were those from Italy and Ireland. Millions of Italians gazed up at Lady Liberty before landing to build new lives. Between 1900-

1914, nearly four million would process through Ellis Island. And, the impact of these immigrants has been felt ever since. They, and their descendants (today, over 17 million Americans claim Italian heritage) have influenced politics, economics and culture throughout the country. Their footprints have been the greatest.

“Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hailed the Year with a joke that will remain in the annals. She said, ‘I thought every year was the Year of Italian Culture!’,” remarks His Excellency Claudio Bisogniero, Ambassador of Italy to The United States of America. And, the former US Secretary of State is not the only to remark on the impact of Italian culture throughout the country. The current Secretary echoes her observations. Bisogniero continues, “Secretary of State Kerry did likewise stating that since 1492, beginning with Columbus and Vespucci, there have been ‘centuries of Italian and American culture,’ and that ‘in truth, Italian culture is everywhere in our country.”

Ambassador Bisogniero is referring to the campaign 2013:

The Year of Italian Culture currently being staged throughout The United States. Crafted by the President of the Italian Republic and organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in conjunction with the Embassy of Italy in Washington, it is like no other. The year-long schedule of events kicked off on December 12, 2012 at the National Gallery of Art when Michelangelo’s David-Apollo, on loan to the Gallery, was unveiled. The Renaissance masterpiece remained on view through March 6 of this year and visitors flocked to the Gallery to be awed.

“The idea,” begins Ambassador Bisogniero, “was to bring the best of Italy to the most important country in the world. And culture, of course, is an important part of foreign policy. With this initiative we promote Italy, but also the friendship between Italy and America.”

The scale of the program is massive. Its outreach is great. It is one of most intensive, impressive and far-reaching programs that has ever been mounted in The United States. Dozens of US cities have sites where programming either has or will occur by the year’s end. In these cities events will not just focus on art but on everything from science to cinema.

“When we get dressed in the morning, to when we drive a car, sit down to eat, furnish our home or even in the emotions we feel or the everyday objects we use, there is often a touch of Italy - of Italian beauty, creativity, and originality,” says Ambassador Bisogniero. “This is exactly what we want to portray to the American public – including children and students – and show them the different facets of Italy. Science and Technology, Art, Music and Theatre, Cinema and Photography, Promotion of Italian Language and Literature, Italian Brand and Design, Tastes and Flavors and the Italian Territories. Because culture is all of this, not just things you see in a museum or listen to in a concert hall.”

As evidenced by one part of the program implemented in Washington, DC. Italian poetry was brought, literally, to the streets of the city through Next Stop: Italy. Posters on DC public transportation lines featured prolific words of Leopardi, Montale, Pavese and Ungaretti translated into English. While, The Phillips Collection hosted Next Stop Italy: A Journey into Italian Contemporary Photography. Held at the museum from March 9 through April 28, the exhibition featured 12 works, ranging from landscape to surrealism, by both established and emerging Italian artists. Photographs from Andrea Galvani, Franco Vaccari and Paolo Ventura drew substantial crowds.

“All events are important if they give the public a full view of how Italian culture becomes part of our daily life,” says Ambassador Bisogniero. “Some of them however, allow us to bring to light, for a wider audience, lesser-known aspects of Italy. This is the case, for example, of the ‘Next Stop Italy’ exhibit and campaign, which featured Italian poetry, literature, and photography in buses in the city of Washington alongside a wonderful exhibit at the Phillips Collection. The response was amazing, not only in terms of numbers, but also in terms of people contacting us seeking more information on the 2013 campaign and its program of events. Creating new impetus for new projects.”

Of course, Italian culture transcends Antiquity and the Renaissance. Italy is a vibrant nation full of a friendly yet determined people, a contagious spirit and innovation. 2013: The Year of Italian Culture exposes this side of the cultural state.

“As I said before,” remarks Ambassador Bisogniero, “culture is more than just culture per se. It is heritage and innovation.

The legacy of centuries of Italian genius, and creativity. The Year of Italian Culture is about Michelangelo, but also ‘Made in Italy’.

It is about The Boxer, the magnificent bronze statue we brought to the Met (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) in New York, but also space collaboration between Italy and the US. In this light, culture remains the true wealth on which Italy can rely more than any other country.”

The logistics of planning something like the 2013 project are Herculean. Organizing venue sites and dates, inviting conference participants and audiences, making travel plans for both people and pieces of art, securing loans of priceless objects and planning promotional campaigns. Let alone working with cities scattered across a country as large as The United States. Teams of people need to work long hours to bring a program like this to fruition.

“Italy,” says Ambassador Bisogniero, “is a source of inspiration for many around the world and here in the US. Italy is much more than a country. It’s a way of life. And, indeed, that is why more than 80 cultural, research, and business institutions and over 50 cities around the United States helped the Italian embassy, consulates and cultural institutes implement our vision. Public-private partnerships have been key in the process, starting from the collaboration of all the Italian agencies involved to the two corporate ambassadors, the Eni Group and the Intesa-Sanpaolo bank. And, it would be unfair not to

recognize all the museum directors and staff, the Italian-American organizations, the many individuals and business that offered their help in making 2013 one of the most successful campaigns.”

So far, response to the program has been robust. Ambassador Bisogniero is a first-hand witness to that fact. He states, “It was exceptionally well received by both the general public as well as by authorities, from President Obama to Vice-President Biden, to the many governors and mayors I met as I toured the country. It has also received a lot of media attention.”

With a program like 2013: The Year of Italian Culture, there is always room to grow and expand. There are always more cultural ideas to explore and further cooperative measures in which to engage.

“We decided to adopt a ‘bottom-up’ approach,” says Ambassador Bisogniero.

“The Italian embassy, consulates, and cultural institutes in the United States as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome continually receive new input on a very wide range of subjects. The Year of Italian Culture is perfect for anyone who wants to participate in this project of friendship, as long as there are quality ideas. Of course, they must be sustainable, both from an economic point of view and in terms of the potential to generate additional initiatives over time. Just by way of example - the competition on Boccaccio we launched, or the initiative on Machiavelli (both celebrate milestone anniversaries in 2013) allow us also to increase the dissemination of the Italian language and the number of students who take the Advanced Placement (AP) exam in Italian.”

The Boccaccio competition, mentioned by the Ambassador, is a oneof-a-kind-event. To celebrate the 700th anniversary of Giovanni Boccaccio’s birth, The Brown University Decameron Web Project has launched a contest for the best adaptation of a tale from The Decameron into a form of colloquial speech. This 14th-century medieval allegory, told as a frame story, shares 100 tales of ten youths. The various tales of love range from the erotic to the tragic and interspersed throughout are practical jokes and life lessons. The purpose of the competition is to spark creativity of both young readers and students of Boccaccio by inviting them to translate The Decameron into a work for our time. Three prizes will be awarded at the close of the competition: Best translation/adaption into contemporary

2013: THE YEAR OF ITALIAN CULTURE UPCOMING EVENTS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Leonardo’s Codex on the Flight of Birds Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington DC September 12 - October 22, 2013 This 18 page long work, dating to 1505, contains the observations of Leonardo DaVinci on the flight of birds and his vision of the construction of flying machines.

English; best adaptation for stage; and best adaptation for alternative and social media. Winners will be published on The Decameron website and the winner of best adaptation for stage will enjoy his or her translation performed by a theater company in Certaldo.

Many questions have several answers. And, there are myriad answers to the questions: Why is 2013 important to the American and Italian people and What should every person, who sees or participates in an event from the program, take away from the experience? The answer that Ambassador Bisogniero gives is simple, to the point and reflective of both.

“Italians and Americans share the same heritage and we have been traveling on the path since Christopher Columbus. Italians and Americans have more in common than one could ever imagine. Our peoples are led by innovative ideas and the same spirit of discovery, aimed at the future, that drove Christopher Columbus in 1492.”

“Italy inspires US” is the tagline used to promote the 2013 program. It is a most succinct summary of the American regard for Italian culture. This inspiration, felt by those in the US, will not change in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, Ambassador Bisogniero believes in both caution and prudence.

“The success of this initiative should not lead to complacency. We must look forward and think about post-2013. When the curtains close on the exhibitions, conferences, concerts and celebrations, the success of the Year, in my view, will not be revealed only by the number of participants at any given event. But by the number of partnerships and long-lasting relationships that will have been established or strengthened between American and Italian institutions, universities, research centers, museums, schools, theaters, and the industry of both countries. That will be the most important ‘legacy’ of the Year of Italian Culture in the United States.”

The Trevi Fountain

Rome is a brilliant tapestry of the ancient and the new. Its streets are interwoven arteries of life lived in Technicolor. It is the Trevi Fountain, with its cascading waters, surrounded by a beehive of activity. And, the Pantheon sitting in its magnanimous state. Surrounding both, chic Romans chat in rapid Italian on iphones and swill espresso. Or, stand in line on a hot day awaiting a requisite gelato. Living in history is taken in natural stride.

For visitors, it is a cacophony of sounds and a kaleidoscope of sights. Careful of the Vespa flying towards you at fever pitch! You are focused on devouring your own melting gelato as you trundle to the Forum. Arriving to these renowned ruins bathed in Roman sunshine, you give a nod of respect to those who inhabited this place so long ago. The ancient Romans who created a system of government that 2,000 years later would be implemented in a nascent country called The United States.

With a city so grand in both size and scope, where do you begin your journey? How do you tackle streets so rich with food and fashion, history and culture and activities competing for attention? Covering much territory, a good way to explore the city is through the Rome Marathon course. The city is on display mile-after-mile. Its renowned sites and its hidden gems. Its neighborhoods, districts and all that is reminiscent of la dolce vita.

We begin at the Coliseum. It is both the Start Line, the Finish Line and one of the most recognized edifices on the planet. Gazing at this massive arena, it is difficult not to be impressed with its endurance. The Coliseum is considered

Palazzaccio

to be one of the greatest works of Roman engineering and has withstood the test of time for nearly 2,000 years. Using your imagination, you can almost hear the throngs of ancients shouting inside, egging on the legendary gladiators. Those men, armed with swords and shields, focused on the fight.

Leaving the Coliseum for now - so much of the city awaits - we follow the route until reaching The Pyramid of Cestius. This structure stands at a fork between two ancient roads - the Via Ostiensis and the line of modern-day Via della Marmorata - and dates to 18 BC–12 BC. It served as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a Roman magistrate. Made from brick-faced concrete, it is covered with slabs of white marble. The interior burial chamber was plundered in Antiquity.

During the construction of the Aurelian Walls, planners incorporated the pyramid to form a triangular bastion. It was one of many structures throughout the city to be reused, likely to reduce cost and build more efficiently. The edifice still forms part of a well-preserved stretch of the walls, a short distance from the Porta San Paolo. And, much admired by architects, it was the primary model for pyramids built in the West.

After studiously regarding the Pyramid of Cestius, a good dose of modern industrial presence is required. Luckily for us, the course takes us straight through the Ostiense neighborhood of Rome. We are greeted by the Gazometro - a 301 foot metallic structure that has become the unofficial symbol of the city. Once a gasworks, the neighborhood’s nononsense urban aesthetic is wonderfully represented through this tower that is now a site for cultural events.

Until a few years ago, the city’s main fruit and vegetable market was found in this area. Since then, Hipsters have recognized Ostiense as the next “cool” place to be seen and nightlife here booms. New boutiques and restaurants have taken up residence, as has Roma Tre, the third university of Rome. Hidden markets merge with trattorias which merge with trendy cafes. The mot du jour is not market in the traditional sense, but, rather, “upmarket.”

After stopping at famed Andreotti, and indulging in a piece of their cake, we must leave Ostiense and continue on our path. We are soon greeted by another Roman neighborhood Testaccio.

Testaccio is a true Roman district. In the past, much of the Tiber River trade took place here. Remains of broken clay vessels, used in ancient olive oil commerce, are stacked creating the artificial Testaccio Hill - Monte Testaccio.

The number of broken artifacts found at Monte Testaccio illustrates the enormous demand for olive oil in imperial Rome.

At the time, Rome boasted the world’s largest population of over one million people. It has been estimated that the hill contains the remains of as many as 53 million container fragments.

Monte Testaccio is not simply a haphazard waste dump; it is an engineered creation. More importantly, this site has provided archaeologists with a rare insight into the ancient Roman economy. The deposited fragments were often labeled with tituli picti - painted or stamped inscriptions recording information such as weight, exporter and the name of the district where the oil was bottled. This has assisted in making determinations of which oil was imported under state authority and designated for the annona urbis (distribution to the people of Rome) or the annona militaris (distribution to the army). Today, caves that car repairmen had previously dug out from the Hill have been transformed into clubs and wine bars. Living in history offers unique perspectives on spaces.

In the not so distant past, Testaccio served as the residential area for the workers of industrial Ostiense. Now, the recent gentrification of Testaccio has enlisted scores of new restaurants, clubs and shops. It is becoming the place of Rome’s culinary highlights. For foodies, Gastronomia Volpetti is here and La Città dell’Altra Economia educates in fair trade practices while offering an abundance of organic food at the same time.

However, life still gravitates around the neighborhood’s central market, which offers everything from meat to vegetables to flowers and is not as trendy as others in Rome.

Snaking through Roman streets and crossing the Tiber River, next up on our tour is one of the most famous districts of the city - Prati. Millions of visitors annually criss-cross its streets en route to Vatican City, its natural border. And, while views of Saint Peter’s excite the passerby, also in the neighborhood is The Palace of Justice.

This behemoth building is popularly called the Palazzaccio and is the seat of the Supreme Court of Cassation and the Judicial Public Library. Designed by the Perugia architect Guglielmo Calderini and built between 1888 and 1910, the Palace of Justice is considered one of the grandest new buildings following the proclamation of Rome as the capital city. Above the façade, and gazing towards the Tiber, sits a great bronze quadriga, the work of sculptor Ettore Ximenes. Ten large statues of notable jurists adorn the ramps before the internal courtyard.

As the day is beginning to fade, we find ourselves hopscotching along the marathon route trying to take in all of Rome‘s bounty. Our next destination is Piazza Navona.

The Pyramid of Cestius

The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Bernini

This piazza is built on the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian, an arena erected during the 1st century, which held 30,000 spectators. Chariot races held here entertained screaming fans while water flooded the area for mock sea battles with scaleddown ships. The remains of the stadium lie mostly unexcavated underneath Piazza Navona’s palaces but you can see one travertine entrance arch from the stadium’s north curve buried under a modern bank building on Piazza di Tor Sanguigna.

It is here where the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is found the masterpiece by Bernini representing the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata. A perennial favorite of art historians, this sculpture received mainstream attention in the

film Angels and Demons. An obelisk, completed in 1651, also captures the space.

Closed to traffic and studded with fountains and cafes, it is an inviting place where everyone from street performers to artists to children playing soccer co-exist. It is a great place to relax in the heart of the city. But, after people-watching for a bit, we must venture on and leave this charming space.

Scuttling sideways, we reach a Roman neighborhood full of action and energy. The Flaminio district is both pleasant and hyper-planned. For more than a decade, this area was a work in progress after the government targeted a plot of land and made it a subject of urban renewal. Soon, restaurants, shops

and apartment buildings proliferated and a neighborhood was born.

In 2002, Renzo Piano’s Auditorium Parca della Musica was completed. This was quickly followed by the opening of Maxxi in 2009. Maxxi, a hub of 21st century art, is quickly drawing visitors from the world over. Flaminio is rapidly becoming a serious and respected arts region of Rome.

But, this part of town doesn’t just serve the arts as a cultural base. Stadio Flaminio is here.

And, Stadio Olympico reigns supreme. Thousands of football fans invade on match days as the Roman clubs - Lazio and Roma - make Olimpico their home. As both teams are Serie A clubs located at the top of the Italian league football system - the competitive spirit is strong within their fans. Waves of blue/white (Lazio) and red/ yellow (Roma) jerseys and banners flood the space. This year, on May 26, Lazio beat Roma (0-1) in the Coppa Italia Final (Italy Cup) and the neighborhood exploded in celebration.

Behind the church, in the presbytery, is a ciborium raised on four grayviolet columns over the shrine of Saint Clement in the crypt below.

Unique to this church is its history and, archaeologically speaking, the structure is a three-tiered complex of buildings. The first tier, or the presentday church, was built just before the year 1100 AD. The second lies beneath the present structure and is a 4th-century basilica that had been converted from the home of a Roman nobleman. The third tier is a private residence built on the foundations of a Republican era building destroyed in the Great Fire of 64 AD. In 1857, excavations under the present-day basilica, uncovered both the original, fourthcentury basilica and the remains of the first-century building.

Exiting the basilica, the Coliseum is near. Standing sentinel, flood lights cast a glow on its intimidating frame.

This means that our tour of Rome is complete. We have crossed the Finish line. At least for today. This city is so full of interesting things to see and do - it can take a lifetime to fully explore. Viva Roma!

Basilica di San Clemente

Leaving the energy of Flaminio, we follow the route to our next stop - the Villa Borghese Gardens. This renowned piece of real estate began its blossom in 1605, when Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and patron of Bernini, developed a plan. He began to turn the land, a former vineyard, into the most extensive gardens built in Rome since antiquity. The vineyard’s site is identified with the gardens of Lucullus, the most famous in the late Roman Republic. During the 19th century much of the land was recreated as an English-styled landscape garden and subsequently bought by the commune of Rome in 1903. It was then given to the public.

Here, we divert from hectic streets and take a leisurely stroll enjoying the natural beauty surrounding us. Hours can be spent touring the gardens and visiting the Galleria Borghese with its priceless collection of paintings and sculptures.

Leaving the idyllic Borghese, we make our way back to the Finish Line and The Coliseum. But, before we end our journey - one last stop is in order. And, that stop is one of the most impressive. The Basilica di San Clemente.

This church was transformed from a location of clandestine Christian worship in the 1st century to a grand public basilica by the 6th century. It served as a barometer of the growing legitimacy and power of the emerging Catholic Church. Today, it is one of the most richly adorned churches in Rome.

The ceremonial entrance, through an atrium surrounded by arcades, leads to the millennial old basilica. Inside the church, visitors are offered views of magnificent

HOLLYWOOD NORTH: Lights, Camera and Tons of Action

Starting in the late 1970s, small tremors were felt on the West Coast. Gradually, they grew stronger and stronger. Throughout the ensuing decades, their path grew more defined as they traveled the terrain from Los Angeles to the Canadian border. A tragic natural disaster was not the end result of these consistent shakes. Rather, they birthed an entirely new film capital. Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This city, with its moniker “Hollywood of the North,â€? has become the third largest filming center in North America. Locations for more than 246 motion pictures have been captured here on film. The local economy, on average, annually reaps US $1 billion dollars because of its distinction. Hollywood has always been about location, location, location. And, what a location Vancouver is‌

Steam Clock, Gas Town

With a short, three-hour flight-time from Los Angeles, and a spot in the same time zone as California, the deal making begins. Add in lower production costs and a climate conducive to shooting film year-round and the contract is nearly signed. Throw in locations that serve as spitting images of US terra firma and everyone signs on the dotted line. The only other American cities that outrank Vancouver in film are New York and Tinseltown itself.

The X-Files was the first major television show that introduced audiences to the scenery and style of Vancouver. Soon, enthusiasts became fluent in recognizing landscapes and the almost eerie atmospheric quality felt through the film. As the benefits of shooting in Vancouver became more evident, a plethora of producers, directors and Hollywood stars hitched a ride north.

Have you seen 3000 Miles to Graceland? Contrary to the Tennessean allusion, part of the film was shot thousands of miles from Elvis’ home at the 2400 Motel on Kingsway. What

about Rumble in the Bronx? One would think New York’s Chinatown would be the logical location of this film’s set. One would be wrong. Jackie Chan and crew rumbled in Vancouver‘s Chinatown. And, fans of the Twilight saga are devouring scenes of vampires and werewolves in action set throughout the Canadian city.

As Hollywood tours Vancouver scouting spots, so shall we. This city has scores of interesting spaces, renowned sites and cultural amenities. Shops and restaurants proliferate the streets. And, the vibe is chill. All elements perfect for casual exploring.

Those who avidly viewed Fringe or never miss an episode of The Killing may notice some familiar sights from the first stop of our North Hollywood Tour Gastown. Both television dramas have used locations from this historic and cultural heart of the city.

Vancouver is one of the furthest points west in Canada. During the mid19th century it sat a great distance from the settled parts of British Ontario and French Quebec. Although, the journey was long and the land was considered

wild, many came to harness this area’s natural resources. And, shortly after the first waves arrived, a man by the name of Gassy Jack Deighton opened a saloon for workers of one of the biggest mills in town - The Hastings Mill. Houses, bars, and businesses sprung up around the saloon as the Town of Granville grew.

However, locals began calling the area Gastown after the local barkeep. And, the name stuck.

At Maple Tree Square, four streets (Water, Alexander, Powell, and Carrall) converge at odd angles. Dozens of bars, pubs and restaurants line the streets and, in the middle of it all, in the Square, stands a statue of the city’s first barkeep: Gassy Jack. It was here that Jack Deighton chose to set up his saloon, just down the road from Hastings Mill. Legend says he arrived with a barrel of whiskey and promised the mill workers they could drink their fill if they helped him build. The bar was open in 24 hours. Tourists and locals alike snap photographs of themselves with Gassy Jack by their sides at this historic location.

Gastown is the city’s oldest neighborhood and block upon block of grand Victorian buildings dominate the area representing the style of that time.

Serving as the epicenter of Vancouver’s creative talent - businesses in design, culture, food, and fashion pervade this space. A never-ending supply of energy seems to present, which draws many to its cutting edge boutiques and design stores, one-of-a-kind galleries and its award-winning dining scene.

Visitors enjoy wandering down cobblestone streets and gazing at heritage buildings. They find both standard and quirky souvenirs in tourist shops serving the neighborhood. City bus tours depart from here as groups wait for the hissing chimes of the renowned Steam Clock.

This clock, one of the most famous attractions in Vancouver, is located near the intersection of Water and Cambie streets. Powered by a steam engine, it emits puffs of steam. It is only one of a few functioning steam clocks that exist, most designed and built by Canadian horologist Raymond Saunders. Although, the timepiece is styled to appear as a 19th-century antique, it actually is dated from 1977. Many try to catch the clock as it musically strikes the hour.

Nearby Gastown sits another “town.”

Chinatown. And, like Gastown, casts and crews from movies such as X-Men: The

Last Stand and Unforgettable have filmed in this neighborhood.

The Friendship Gate of Chinatown stands tall on Pender Street, welcoming visitors to the neighborhood. Not so long ago, this area stood as a bustling center for both Chinese immigrants and Chinese multi-generational families. During the early 1990s, it fell into decline as new members of Vancouver’s Cantonese Chinese community (arriving both prior and after the Hong Kong Handoff to China in 1997) and affluent Taiwanese immigrants moved to other parts of Vancouver and its surrounding area.

Although, Chinatown suffered a period of being down it is certainly not out. As part of a revitalization effort, it is becoming more prosperous as new investment and construction is flourishing. Home to many traditional restaurants, banks, open markets and clinics, tea shops, clothing and other boutiques, the community caters to both locals and tourists. It manages to maintain an audience.

Walking through the streets of this neighborhood, the architecture and styles of the East surround you. The main attractions in Chinatown are, of course, Chinese themed.

With The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden as one of the most popular.

This authentic Ming Dynasty-style garden, the first found outside of China, honors Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the founder of the Republic of China. Built in 1986, by 52 Chinese artisans arriving from Suzhou, it incorporates design elements and traditional materials from several of China’s centuries-old private gardens.

During its construction, and upholding the traditional Chinese way, no power tools, screws, or nails were used. The Garden

offers guided tours of the premises, including those that speak on the philosophy and symbolism central to the garden’s design.

An equally compelling visit is to the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum and Archives. This complex focuses on the Chinese immigrants of Canada’s past and offers visitors hours of entertainment and education.

The rich, and often times difficult, history of the Chinese in British Columbia is well represented in this Ming Dynastystyle facility. The art gallery upstairs hosts traveling exhibits

by Chinese and Canadian artists. An on-site military museum educates audiences on the role of Chinese Canadians in the last two world wars.

And, featured outside of the complex is the Chinatown Memorial Monument. This monument commemorates ChineseCanadian contributions to the city of Vancouver, the province of British Columbia, and the country of Canada. The monument, built in the shape of the Chinese character 中 (“middle”) has been symbolically translated to mean harmony. It is flanked by bronze statues of a railroad worker and a World War II soldier.

Of course, many films are not set in downtown locations.

Some film producers require scenes of natural beauty. The Stanley Park area of Vancouver fills the bill as film crews set-up their equipment throughout this stunning park. If you have ever seen Stephen King’s It or That Cold Day in the Park, you have already had an introduction to one of Vancouver’s most breath taking areas.

Designated a national historic site of Canada, Stanley Park is a green oasis in the midst of an urban landscape. Miles of

trails and beaches provide activities for those craving a taste of the great outdoors. The Seawall is a scenic path nearly 14 miles long that lines Vancouver’s waterfront. It is the perfect area for a walk, cycle or jog and is the most popular recreational spot in the city.

Found here is the Lost Lagoon.

Marked by the notable Jubilee Fountain, this marsh adds biodiversity to the park. Acting as a bio-filtration center for causeway run-off, a series of holding ponds, planted with rushes and grasses, provides sanctuary to many species of birds. A visit to the Lost Lagoon Nature House (operated by the Stanley Park Ecology Society) provides information on the park’s rich flora and fauna and social history.

In Stanley Park, a natural wonder is witnessed when looking at Siwash Rock. This 32 million-year-old sea stack (rock outcropping) is located just off the seawall between Third Beach and Lions Gate Bridge. It is not only important geologically, its legend is deeply rooted in Native beliefs. According to a Squamish legend, a man was transformed into the Siwash Rock “as an indestructible monument to Clean Fatherhood” - a reward for unselfishness.

A lookout above Siwash Rock is accessible from Park Drive or Siwash Rock Trail leading from Prospect Point and Third Beach.

There are many things to do in the park. One can spend hours exploring its environment. But, if the required hours are not available, an easy and quick way to tour the area is by taking either a horse-drawn carriage ride or hopping onto one of the many trolleys that travel through it. Either option provides a narrated tour of the park and runs from 45 minutes to one hour.

Hollywood is onto something collaborating with this fine city.

Vancouver is a place that is both relaxing and exciting. It is historic and new. Of course, we will be seeing a lot more of this city as further sites are scouted for future films and television shows. Its cityscapes and spectacular views. You may even catch a glimpse of Vancouver tonight if you venture out to watch a film on a big screen near you.

DAY TRIPPING Daytrips From DC - Busch Gardens, Gettysburg and The Eastern Shore

We turn another year older this year. 237 years have passed since our Founding Fathers stood on those steps in Philadelphia, proclaiming our Declaration to the mighty British empire. Many of us will mark the event here in the Nation’s Capital. Washington always provides a stunning backdrop for myriad celebrations in red, white and blue. Others of us will head home, scattering across this massive land. Friendly barbeques, baseball games and hometown firework displays will be enjoyed.

However, some of us may be caught betwixt the two. For those looking for a Fourth celebration whether fun, historical or relaxing - look no further than one of these daytrips from the District.

The biggest attraction of Heatherdowns is Loch Ness Monster. It is a looping aerodynamic roller coaster and the first of its kind in the world to feature interlocking loops. Also, located in this section of the park, is the Sesame Street Forest of Fun. It features four new family-friendly rides and attractions themed to Sesame Street, including a Zierer junior roller coaster named Grover’s Alpine Express, Bert and Ernie’s Loch Adventure flume ride, Oscar’s Whirly Worms rock-n-tug-type ride and Prince Elmo’s Spire shot-n-drop ride.

Some of the most exciting rides in the park are found near Italy. Da Vinci’s Cradle is a standard magic carpet amusement ride. It swings back and forth, gaining in height until it rotates over the top. If that doesn’t impress you, maybe Escape from Pompeii will. This shoot-the-chutes boat ride features an extensive indoor portion within the city of Pompeii, featuring fire and water effects. And, at Festa Italia, Apollo’s Chariot thrills ride participants as it dives towards and around ponds and hills.

Busch Gardens, Williamsburg VA Amusement parks have been part of American summer fun for nearly two centuries. One of the grandest theme parks in the country resides a short distance from DC in Williamsburg, Virginia. Rollercoasters, flume rides and a pirate ship will leave you breathless, while cotton candy, funnel cakes and ice cream sate hunger of all ages. If that isn’t enough, try your hand at an old fashioned arcade game - leave the video games behind - and attempt to win a prize. It is the perfect summer escape to revisit your inner child.

Drawing fun-seekers since its opening on May 16, 1975, the park is themed around Old World Europe. As such, it features installations on England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, France, New France and Germany. In addition to its European theme, the center is widely known for its roller coasters, including Alpengeist and Apollo’s Chariot, which won #4 Best Steel Coaster in 2012 from the Golden Ticket Awards.

Two attractions provide transportation around the park. The Skyride gondola lift transports guests between the Banbury Cross, Aquitaine and Rhinefeld hamlets; while replica steam trains transport guests between the Heatherdowns, Festa Italia, and New France hamlets. These, miniature country replicas provide hours of fun.

The Scottish hamlet of Heatherdowns is home to the Highland Stables, which feature Scottish Blackface sheep, Border collies, Clydesdales and a European barn owl. Guests can interact with the animals and see them in action during daily demonstrations. Prior to 2010, the stables housed several

Gettysburg, PA If you are looking for an historic way to spend the Fourth, less than a two-hour drive from our nation’s capital is Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The town was founded in 1786 and named after Samuel Gettys, an early settler and tavern owner. Although, the confluence of ten major period roads caused it to be attractive to settlers, it was the Civil War that caused Gettysburg to become a household name.

For three days in July of 1863, a costly battle raged between the Union and Confederate armies in and around Gettysburg. It was here, during the conflict, that President Abraham Lincoln gave his renowned address. By battle’s end, over 51,000 casualties were recorded.

While the war between the states continued two years following this battle, the conflict is viewed as the turning point of the war. Southern forces had been prevailing until Gettysburg.

However, the Northern win here bolstered Union efforts and, at the conclusion of the War, the nation remained as one.

This year, Gettysburg recognizes the 150th anniversary of the battle. Over the span of four days, July 4, 5, 6, and 7, soldier and civilian re-enactors will re-create the 1860s, through battles,

encampments and demonstrations. Visitors can get an upclose look at cavalry, artillery and the lives that soldiers led during the Civil War. Re-enactment organizers are expecting 15,000 re-enactors, thousands more civilian interpreters, 400 horses and 100 cannons.

Aside from the re-enactment, many events are being planned throughout the area. War Meets Compassion - The Confederate Field Hospital is one such experience. Visitors can tour this Confederate field hospital at the site of the historic Daniel Lady Farm. Demonstrations will include pill making during the 1860s, minor surgery such as bullet extraction, interactive programs, “brain surgery”, amputations, medical paperwork and presentations on medical instruments.

Of course, being the Fourth of July, Gettysburg celebrates.

Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic for a special orchestra concert featuring members of the Metta Ensemble and the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra directed by Alexander Kahn and Norman Nunamaker. The event will be held on the north side of Penn Hall on the Gettysburg College Campus. The event will move to the Paul Recital Hall, Schmucker Hall in the case of inclement weather.

Thomas Point Lighthouse

The Eastern Shore, MD The Maryland Eastern Shore is a fairly wide peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of miles of shoreline, resorts, farmland, forests and small historic towns dot its historic landscape.

Previously, the Eastern Shore was a drive-through area between Annapolis and Ocean City. This changed a few years ago and, now, small towns like Easton and St. Michaels are destinations in their own right. Exploring the region’s friendly shops, biking through parks, kayaking on creeks, and eating Maryland’s famous crab cakes are partially what the area is known for.

The quaint bayside town of St Michaels draws visitors in with its panoramic views. Aside from its natural beauty, it is also an historic area and St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square exhibits pieces of local history themed to the mid-19th century.

Self guided tours and docent led are available at the museum.

If you are up for water excursion, Chesapeake Bay Charters may be your ticket. This firm offers hands-on sailing experience onboard the oldest working skipjack. Learn about Chesapeake ecology, maritime history, and enjoy an oyster-dredge demonstration.

Named one of the best small towns in America, Easton, Maryland, is a haven of quiet streets and quirky festivals. First settled in the 17th century, Easton has remained an active community since Colonial times. The Third Haven Meeting House, built in 1682 by the local Quakers, is still used for Sunday meetings to this day.

GETTYSBURG Gettysburg 150th National Civil War Battle Reenactment Over four days, soldier and civilian re-enactors will re-create the 1860s, through battles, encampments and demonstrations.

EASTERN SHORE St. Michaels Traditional Independence Day Celebration On July 4, 2013, starting at 10 a.m., St. Michaels Museum will again sponsor a traditional Independence Day celebration at the Museum on the corner of East Chestnut Street and St. Mary’s Square. Events will start with a Children’s Parade. Children and parents should arrive at 9:30 AM. At 11 a.m. the traditional program will begin with Boy Scout Troup 741 raising the flag and leading a Pledge of Allegiance at the Flag Pole in front of the Museum. Preparation Season and grill the lamb loin to medium rare, turning often to prevent grill marks and to ensure even cooking. Allow four minutes to rest before slicing into two rounds. Save the juices from the rested lamb and add to the jus.

In a small sautĂŠ pan combine lamb jus and cooked merguez sausage. Warm all through and season to taste with salt and black pepper.

Warm whipped carrot puree and spoon onto plate.

Glace baby carrots with radish and fondant potatoes using vegetable stock, butter, salt and pepper.

Dress the plate with lamb jus. Finish with micro celery.

Whipped Carrot Puree

Cook carrots in carrot juice until soft. Strain and puree in blender with diced fat back until rich and smooth.

Fondant Potatoes

Cut potatoes in half, season and sear in butter until golden brown. Add water, thyme and olive oil and cook until tender adding more water as needed.

Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a heavy saucepan combine cream and chocolate and cook over medium heat stirring until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth.

Whisk in sugar, yolks (one at a time), and vanilla.

Strain the custard into 6 one-half cup ramekins and place in a baking pan.

Add hot water to the pan to reach halfway up the side to create a water bath.

Bake 25 minutes of until top is set. Remove from pan and let cool. Garnish with chocolate curls.

As designers, we are constantly looking for a fresh spin on the expected and for new approaches to the existing. Our industry is ever evolving and part of that evolution is inspired by the world of fashion. With the seasonality of apparel and the sometimes snap-of-a-finger lifespan of trends, fashion reinvents itself over and over again. We watch what’s happening on the runway to catch a breath of fresh air and to skillfully extract a new idea that we can artfully weave into an enduring design.

Since we aren’t changing our interiors as quickly as our clothing, it is important that we not get caught up in trends. Rather, we use trends as inspiration and artfully mix some of the fresh runway elements into our timeless design. Many of the pieces that go into our interiors are custom-designed and it’s not unusual that a sofa design be inspired by a tailored suit or a light fixture be inspired by a necklace. Design ideas and details can come from an item or element that is aesthetically pleasing but not necessarily of the same genre or use. With a keen eye, we see the elements of most any fashion piece and rework it to create an interior that evokes the same feel of the fashion piece but is realized in a completely different way.

Every day you see things that catch your eye. If you take a moment to think about what it is that you like about, for example, that shoe - why does that piece feel different than what you’ve seen before? - you’ll be able to dig a little deeper and identify the element that inspires you. You can then take that piece and apply it to designing your interiors through fashion.

We ask ourselves those questions every day. We have often landed on textiles as being the stand-out element of a piece of clothing or accessory. Fabric is a key component in both fashion and interiors, so it’s no surprise that interior designers are quickly drawn to textiles and transform them into features of the overall interior design. We think about what it is about the material that is pleasing. We consider the weave, the stitching, the visual and actual weight, colors, patterns and the sheen or finish of the fabric. Summer attire is often made of light and airy fabrics, whereas, winter pieces are made of thick, soft and cozy fabrics. We take these same ideals and incorporate them into the look and feel we’re working to achieve in our interiors. If we’re working on a formal dining room where we want some glitz, we select materials that bounce light and bring energy to the space. If we’re developing a cozy family room, we look for fabrics that soak up all light for an ultra warm look and feel, like chenille or wool.

The details in fashion inspire us to create the same level of detail in our homes. When you identify what it is that appeals to you about a piece, simply apply it to your home! If you love the stitching on that Burberry raincoat consider using that same stitch on an upholstered piece in your living room. Maybe running it in an “x” across the top of an ottoman, or along the edge of the cushions on your sofa. And, if you want to take the design a little further, consider using a thread in a contrasting color.

In fashion, how a material is used is often the initial intrigue of the piece. A runway dress may catch your eye because the fabric is applied at an angle. A plaid dress is a plaid dress but rotate the plaid, at an angle, and suddenly the dress has a more modern and youthful approach. Could this then inspire you to go further with a pair of toss pillows? Take a striped pattern and miter it so that it creates a box shape as all stripes seam together at perpendicular angles.

Could you push a sofa into the fashion forward spotlight by having the cushions upholstered with the pattern running one way and switch the pattern direction for the body of the frame?

In some instances, it might be that you find yourself adoring, say, a necklace that is quite plain in its physical makeup but is awe-inspiring in style and shape.

Perhaps, the necklace combines deco and modern in a way you’ve never seen. The material itself might be unimpressive but the curvature or creativity of shape could be truly unique. Could you not take a rather ordinary material like concrete and make it less sensible by designing it into a triangular coffee table?

Unexpected, to say the least. How about taking more liberty with the shape of the shade that goes on your favorite table lamp? The white linen won’t catch attention but the oversized oval set atop a squat rectangular base might give reason to pause.

As successful fashion often is achieved, take a risk with one element - for example a curved or angle-backed sofa - and stay classic with another element - like selecting a simple upholstery fabric. See what shapes appeal to you and then dive in. If you tend towards softer shapes then don’t feel any pressure to embrace an onyx faceted table. An over-sized oval pebble table could be a better fit. As the design process evolves, reflect back upon the necklace or inspiration item and zero in on what makes it so special. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and you might love a unique quality that not everyone else sees.

We encourage you to be bold with how you spin your runway knowledge, but be sure to recognize that if you’re likely to change with the seasons as readily as the fashion industry does, it might be wise to throw your efforts into accent pieces. Examples are pillows, throws, and small benches, so that you don’t wind up with a sofa that feels as “yesterday” as a down coat in spring. As with fashion, you have every opportunity to push a design trend to the extreme, you just have to allow yourself to follow your inspiration and apply it however it suits you best.

For many, it might be as small of a touch as bright tapered candles when colorful dress socks were the starting point. Whatever your method and wherever you land, enjoy thinking outside of the box and off the runway!

In New York City, new solar-powered mobile charging stations opened last month enabling the public to recharge cell phones and other mobile devices for free. This is a great example of how new technologies are rapidly emerging in solar energy. They serve up fresh options for consumers in effective and affordable solar-powered solutions that can help support the demands of an active, mobile lifestyle, reduce spending on energy, and build a cleaner environment for our future.

Solar energy technologies today may seem all about skinny – at least in form and price – but they are big on energy output and usability. These technologies today have come a long way from the bulky, large and expensive solar panels that struggled and failed to become main stream following the energy crisis in the 1970s. Advancements in solar photovoltaic (PV), the materials originally developed to support early space missions and which power satellites today, are still the primary core materials used.

However, new materials in the forms of thin film-PV and other solar cell technology are smaller and thinner, lighter in weight, generate more energy, and best of all, are much less expensive to produce.

Home Sweet Solar According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, solar technology options today are more affordable than ever. The average price of a completed PV home system has dropped by 33 percent since 2011 and the US now has enough solar electric capacity to power more than 1.3 million average American homes. Residential installations more than doubled the first quarter of 2013 over the same quarter last year. With lower prices, more options, tax incentives and consumers wanting more options on and off the grid, commercial businesses have cropped up to support this demand. Companies like EnergySage offer consumers help comparing best options for their home solar installations through an online tool. Others, such as Solar Universe, are getting started locally as franchises

to help provide local service to consumers seeking solar alternatives.

You haven’t truly become the “coolest” in the neighborhood until you win the rooftop green solar garden contest. No contest yet? Don’t worry, there will be soon. Green roof tops, especially those combined with solar technology, are growing in popularity.

According to DCGreenWorks.org, in the 20th Century, modern green roofs were made possible by advances in membrane and waterproofing materials and in horticulture. Green roof plants capture and retain more than 50 percent of the rain that falls on your roof annually, thereby reducing the quantity of water running into sewers and waterways, and naturally emitting cool air just by evaporation process. This helps keep sensitive PV elements on solar panels operating at optimal temperatures.

The plants also add an additional layer of insulation to your home, helping to keep your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

So, in case you haven’t yet found a partner who truly understands you, now you can at least have a home thermostat that does. Best of all, it adjusts according to your behavior (not the weather, or the power company’s). According to Gigaom, the company called Nest has redefined and redesigned a very cute and “smart” wall thermostat, of which they are now shipping an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 a month. The company raised an extra $80 million in January to support their continued growth.

Charge Me Up, Before You Go-Go. Simple, portable little solar mobile phone chargers have been around for about a decade. However, a new crop of gadgets generate a lot more energy and support an entire new mobilebased society that needs to “charge up” en route. Thin solar panels are making their way into all sorts of accessories.

Things like solar back packs ($129) and laptop cases ($399) from Voltaic Systems, or for more remote excursions, the EnerPlex Kickr ($129.99), which comes in a nice camo design and can charge up your iPhone in about 1.4 hours.

While these products may not seem very sexy, a recent Nivea campaign in Brazil used solar panels printed in a magazine ad that included an actual iPhone connection. The campaign was to support Nivea’s line of Sun products, with the tag line of: “Now you only have to leave the beach, when the sun does.” With solar panels becoming so thin, flexible, powerful and affordable and the consumer demand for portable power sources growing, we should expect to see more fun and creative products emerging in clothing, outdoor accessories and more.

Magic Solar Paint.

Around the world, interest in and demand for more cost effective and commercially viable solar energy solutions is spurring even further rapid advancements and innovations in solar technologies. The magic ingredients to this sunvolution, however, are much more than just the amazing technology.

Elements such as public-private partnerships between government, technology and industry, lawmaker support in the form of major tax incentives, the overwhelming positive drive from a voting public and about three decades of prize-winning advocacy by a variety of individuals and organizations, all have combined at the right time to finally bring the solar market into the, ah-em, light. And the sparks are flying. An engineer from the University at Buffalo just announced he has developed a new generation of photovoltaic cells that produce more power and cost less to manufacture than what’s available today. Oh, and you can roll them on to any surface like paint. Now, “cool” can’t even begin to describe whatever awesome thing that is.

I think someone said this to me about 20 years ago: “You should always look cute, you never know who you might meet.� This statement is so true. I try to live by it. You should try to live by it. Fortunately, I get to travel a lot. This means that I have seen all kinds of unfortunate fashion mishaps even when I am not on the lookout for them! Are there rules for traveling and being fashionable? Yes, there are. Sweat pants, tank tops, and suits that are visibly uncomfortable need to be left in the vehicle that dropped you off at the airport or train station. So how do you travel in fashion and stay comfortable? Here are a few simple rules to follow:

Wear Loose comfortable clothing. This does not mean sweat pants.

Jeans, shorts, dress slacks, business shirts - all of these fit in to fashion and wearable style.

Do not over accessorize. Put things such as watches, cufflinks, and jewelry in a zip lock and tuck away in your carryon. These items will be easily accessible, won’t slow you down in the security line and are ready for you to put on as soon as you land. If you travel a lot, you know that there is plenty of time to get ready for your meeting toward the end of your travel on a plane or a train.

If you stress when you travel allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Add an hour to the actual time you need to depart to assure you have time to prep yourself for anything that may happen. You are taking a major risk if you plan things too tight when flying or taking the train. My thing is why stress yourself out when there’s no need? Adding time to your trip will allow you to take a deep breath as to travel comfortably and fashionably.

I know people that met on a plane and got married a few years later. I know people that met on trains and nurtured long lasting friendships. You don’t want to be that guy that gets looked over because you have on a horrible outfit do you? Beside David Beckham, I don’t know many people that are able to pull off sweat pants while traveling; so let’s save the sweat pants for when you arrive at your destination and you’re relaxing in a bungalow.

With planes leaving every minute from an airport and trains leaving every half hour to hour, we will encounter more looks, more stares, and more interesting head tilts traveling than we do in our daily lives. Most of us want to make a lasting impression every day.

Why would traveling be any different? If you are “too casual of a traveler”, try spicing your wardrobe up and see what happens. I’ve met some of the most interesting and sexy people at airports……

All because they loved the shoes I was wearing (they did match my outfit perfectly).

COLLINS AMERICANO The Fourth of July is one of the most important U.S. holidays and having great drinks to celebrate is mandatory. The Collins American fits the bill perfectly.

The base of the drink is American Rye Whiskey (the drink choice of George Washington) mixed with fresh cranberry liquor from Leopold Brothers. This blend results in flavors of spice, sweet, bitter and tart, working together to create a diverse and unique representation, like The United States itself. On top of the base, two classic cocktails are added: An American “Collins” (mix of lemon and sugar water and soda) and an Italian “Americano” (Campari, soda and sweet vermouth here using the cranberry liqueur as vermouth). Why an Italian drink? The Americano was created for American tourists in Italy. More importantly, Amerigo Vespucci was the Italian explorer and financier that proved the “New World” was not part of Asia. He is the namesake of America. Let the Collins Americano refresh and excite, just like fireworks in the night. Drawing upon inspiration from American history and classical mixology, the drink will stand out and enhance any Independence Day event.

DIRECTIONS Fill a Collins glass with ice. Next, build the drinks in the glass by pouring all ingredients into the glass over ice. To mix and chill the drink, roll (pour from the Collins glass into a metal mixing tin, and then back into the Collins glass) 5 times or until both mixing tin and glassware begin to frost. PUNCH OF PURSUIT As the old rhyme goes “In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” The Italian Explorer set sail from Palos de la Frontera, Spain on the night of August 3 with three ships: the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Niña. During August, toast Columbus with the first ever mixed drink, a classic punch. From the Hindi word “Panch” (meaning “5”) this drink was developed in large part on sailing vessels as sailors tried to reconstitute spirits (often medicinal) into a more palatable form of consumption. Punch is the perfect way to creatively re-imagine a little bit of Columbus’ journey! Imagine after finally reaching the “West Indies,” all that is left to drink on the vessel is some medicinal Orujo and sherry.

To soften, perhaps the crew combines the liquors with scurvy fighting citrus, sugar syrup from the local cane, hot water for purification aspects and samples of the spices they were sent to seek. Finally with a drinkable brew, the men could relax after finding land, and, although, not knowing the future, for one night they could enjoy discovering a whole new world. So toast August, Columbus and his crew with the Punch of Pursuit. And, make sure to find a great crew to share it with!

INGREDIENTS 3 parts Orujo (Spanish Pomace Brandy) 2 parts Pale Dry Spanish Sherry 2 parts lemon juice 2 parts Demarara Syrup 3 parts Mineral Water Cinnamon Sticks and ground cinnamon Garnish: Broken Cinnamon Stick

DIRECTIONS In a large punch bowl, combine lemon juice, Demarara syrup, cinnamon sticks and ground cinnamon (adjust cinnamon to personal tastes.) Break each stick into 2 or 3 pieces. (Again, depending on personal taste and number of guests served. Optimally, one broken stick piece per guest.) After adding all non-alcoholic ingredients, heat the mineral water (just below boiling point.) Introduce the heated water and stir until ingredients are properly mixed together. Finally, add the Orujo, sherry, and ice and stir until cold. Ladle into a punch glass making sure to include at least one piece of a cinnamon stick. Serve and Enjoy! *Note – For cold punch add alcohol after the water and ice. For hot punch add alcohol before the hot water. Not all cold punches need to be made with hot water but this

STELLE CADENTI Every year in Italy, on August 10, people gather hoping to witness the Perseids Meteor Shower. Observed for nearly 2,000 years, the event has become known to many as the “Tears of Saint Lawrence” as it coincides with St. Lawrence’s’ death on August 10. A night of wonderment, many people make a wish upon the burning streaks of light shed by the Swift-Tuttle comet. Fiery and bright, Italian Grappa is the perfect matching spirit. However, for cooling and longevity purposes, the grappa needs to be tempered. Italian Amaro, which is semi-sweet and semi-bitter is the perfect accompaniment. Decadence from the Amarena Cherry, soaked in a dark rich syrup, and layers of citrus and sugar, build alternating levels of sweet and bitter. Finally, just as hot steel is cooled from the forge in cold water, the Italian sparkling water tames the boldness and brings all the ingredients together. Every sip of a Stelle Cadenti will delight like every shooting star witnessed. It is a bright spot and makes every “Notte San Lorenzo” festival one worth remembering!

INGREDIENTS 1 ¼ oz Grappa ½ oz Amaro Ramazzotti ½ oz Italian Sparkling Water 1 Orange Slice 1 Italian Amarena Cherry 1 sugar cube Garnish: Shooting Star Ice Cube

DIRECTIONS In a mixing glass, combine orange slice, sugar cube, Amarena cherry and ½ oz soda water. Muddle till all ingredients are dissolved thoroughly. Pour the Grappa, and Ramazzotti into the mixing glass and then fill with ice. Stir 40-50 times. Use a julep and fine mesh strainer to double strain the drink into a rocks glass. Add the ice garnish. CASTLES Protecting Your Assets and Wealth PART II

Last month, we discussed the concept of financial castles and moats. With the help of insurance and legal documents, you can construct a moat that will help protect your financial castle from intruders (the undesired or unplanned). In this month’s issue, we will delve down into the first three layers of that moat – auto insurance, homeowners insurance, and liability coverage. My goal is to provide you with a high level overview of these three types of insurance, why they are necessary, and what to look for in your policies. I strongly recommend that you have a detailed conversation with your property and casualty insurance agent to help ensure that your policies provide proper coverage and protect your assets from any type of event that could jeopardize you and your family’s financial security.

First, let’s discuss your automobile insurance. Driving a car creates one of the largest potential liabilities for you and your family. If you or a family member gets in an automobile accident and you are found at fault, you could face tremendous liability, particularly if the other driver or passengers suffer injuries.

One of the first things that I tell my clients with regard to their auto policies is to make sure that they have plenty of liability coverage – opt for the highest amounts possible (within your budget). Additionally, I suggest selecting a higher collision and comprehensive deductible, somewhere between $500 and $2,500 (whatever you are comfortable with). This is because most people wouldn’t or shouldn’t put in a small claim on their policy. It is not the size of the claim that increases your premium costs or even worse, forces your insurance carrier

to drop your coverage altogether; it is the number of claims that usually increases your premium costs. The best way to avoid a lot of claims is to carry a large deductible. Pocket the savings you will reap by having a larger deductible and put it in a savings account for smaller incidentals like a new bumper or broken window.

The most important part of selecting appropriate automobile insurance coverage is to ensure that you coordinate your auto policy with a liability umbrella policy. We usually recommend having total liability that is greater than your total assets. Typically, most clients should have a minimum of $1 million of liability coverage for their vehicles. If you or a family member gets into an accident and someone is killed or injured, the amount of liability for you (the owner of the car and possibly the driver) could be financially devastating to your assets. It is much better to shift the possibility of that liability to your insurance carrier for a manageable premium.

The next type of coverage that everyone needs is homeowners or renters insurance. The same principle applies to the deductible – you should have a larger deductible to keep from making small and more frequent claims. You should also make certain that you have guaranteed replacement cost coverage if you own your home. In the event of a fire or devastating event, you want to make sure that your property can be rebuilt and put back together like it was before the disaster struck, instead of simply getting a check for the value of your items at the time of the disaster (which is likely depreciated from what they would actually cost to replace).

The last layer of the moat that we will discuss is liability coverage. Often referred to as an “umbrella policy”, this form of liability coverage adds an extra layer of liability protection over and above your homeowners and auto policies. In the event that you exhaust your automobile or homeowners policy liability coverage, the umbrella liability coverage kicks in. The cost for the coverage is usually fairly inexpensive; the minimum amount of coverage of $1M is usually available for no more than $200 per year and $5 million at around $500.

Each company is different and your unique situation (number of cars, motorcycles, boats, pets, trampoline, pools, etc.) ultimately determine your specific risk and cost. Check with your insurance agent and obtain quotes. By purchasing this coverage, you help ensure that you have the maximum liability protection no matter where the liability occurs.

In summary, auto insurance, homeowners or renters insurance and umbrella liability insurance are instrumental in helping to protect what you have worked so hard to build.

You want to make sure that you have enough coverage for the contents of your home (or room(s) if you are renting) and you also want to make sure that you have plenty of liability coverage in case someone gets hurt or killed on your property. Additionally, I strongly recommend that my clients take a video of their home and its contents and that they store that video on the internet (cloud) and keep a copy in a safe deposit box. In the event that their property is destroyed, they will be able to help prove to their insurance company everything that they had in their home. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” You should also have a rider that covers jewelry, artwork, antiques, or any other valuable items that would not be covered automatically under a homeowner’s policy.

For these items, you must generally furnish receipts or have the items appraised to prove their value. I would recommend discussing your specific situation with your insurance agent, who will help mine for potential issues like sewer or sump pump back up and flood coverage, earthquake coverage, and other types of coverage that would be important to the area that you live in based on the frequency of disasters that can and do

The Board of Trustees approved $2 million to plan the building’s new design, paving the way for a more modern residence hall featuring collaborative work space, aimed at drawing top graduate students. Construction crews will break ground next summer on the historic building that served as a hideout for one of the convicted conspirators in the Watergate scandal. It is expected to be finished by 2016, pending approval from District agencies and another funding green light from the Board of Trustees next year. (Hatchet) The work of close to 50 DC-area writers is featured in a new anthology—District Lines—published by well-known Chevy Chase, DC, independent bookstore, Politics & Prose. Martin O’Malley pledged $280 million from the state’s gas tax hike, but Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown said the transit project would probably need private dollars going forward. (WTOP) The Hirshhorn Museum’s board deadlocked on May 23 on whether to forge ahead with the avant-garde inflatable structure known as the Bubble, and the museum’s director, Richard Koshalek, announced shortly afterward that he’ll quit later this year. Koshalek proposed the ambitious project four years ago to elevate the Hirshhorn’s international profile, seeking a bold commitment to architectural innovation and a new program of arts and cultural events. Capital Bikeshare’s expansion to Montgomery County, after successful runs in DC and Northern Virginia, won’t just mean more bikes on the streets. More bike lanes, more markings for shared lanes and more signage for cyclists will all be needed before customers begin renting bikes later this summer, said Al Roshdieh, deputy director of Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation. About 29 docks for 250 rentable bikes are planned in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, while a seperately funded bikeshare program plans another 200 bikes at about eight docks in Rockville. (Patch) An Atlanta-based company backed by Kuwaiti investors has reached a deal to acquire 1200 19th St. NW for about $294 million, or roughly $871 per square foot, one of the highest prices per square foot for an investment sale in downtown D.C., according to sources familiar with the deal. Fosterlane Management Co. has a contract to buy the 337,578-square-foot building by 19th and M streets from Hines Interests LP. (WBJ) The Sweet Lobby, at Eastern Market, celebrated its second birthday. The first week of June, the pastry shop gave out a different treats to patrons who stopped by. (Borderstan) The Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force held its 5th annual regional soccer tournament at Washington-Lee high school on June 22. The tournament was open to 100 at-risk youth between the ages of 12 and 16. (Arlington County) On, June 1, the annual Taste of Georgetown put on its 20th edition with cuisine from 30 of the neighborhood’s restaurants.

Along with the food, the festival included an expansive beer and wine pavilion. And, as an added bonus, an Iron Chef-style competition was held between Georgetown restaurant chefs. (dcist) Korean chicken restaurant Bonchon is hoping to open its new Arlington location at 2201 N. Pershing Drive in mid-July.

In addition to chicken, the eatery will have “a dozen beers on tap, including craft options, and growler service to cater to the restaurant’s carryout clients.” (WBJ) A controversial bill to require large retailers in the District to pay a “living wage” sailed through a key D.C. Council committee, setting up a vote in the full Council. The Large Retailer Accountability Act was introduced in January by Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and received a contentious hearing in March, with members of the business community alleging that its requirements were unfair and that it would drive business out of the city. Vincent Orange, who chairs the Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, amended the legislation to address some of those concerns, removing the provision that only stores in excess of 75,000 square feet would be subject to the wage requirements, so that any retailer whose parent company grosses at least $1 billion per year is required to pay $12.50 an hour, minus prorated benefits. The beloved old-fashioned Frager’s Hardware on Capitol Hill was all but destroyed in a spectacular fire on June 5, despite the efforts of firefighters pouring 20,000 gallons of water a minute on the flames to save the 93-year-old landmark. (WaPo) Ron Burgundy, from the film Anchorman, is going on display at the Newseum when “Anchorman: The Exhibit” opens on Nov. 14. Among the artifacts from the 2004 film will be the velourheavy wardrobe that clothed the Channel 4 Evening News Team, Burgundy’s jazz flute and the KVWN news desk, which Newseum visitors will be able to sit behind. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is getting a $12 million donation from Oprah Winfrey, the second donation she had made to the museum. Winfrey, who has been member of the museum’s advisory council since 2004, donated $1 million toward the museum’s construction in 2007. The museum, under construction on the National Mall, is expected to cost $500 million and open in late 2015. (WBJ)

Bourbon Whiskey Emerges from the Shadows Bourbon has a lot going for it. For one thing, it is homegrown. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States, beyond Bourbon County, Kentucky. Although nearly 80% of it is, indeed, produced in Kentucky, which remains the only state with the legal right to attach its name on the label as a “bourbon” product. Bourbon is also made in Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana and California, among others. As long as it is stored in new charred oak containers and distilled from a blend of grains containing at least 51% corn, it is legally recognized as bourbon. Bourbon is also the sort of whiskey that nearly anyone can try and order. It comes with very little snobbery or over-refinement. Despite a two-decade period of lagging sales, bourbon is attracting the budding connoisseurs with the help of two marketing terms: small batch and special selection. Today’s small batch bourbon whiskeys are chosen to emphasize elegance, complexity and a spectrum of flavors.

While the regulations regarding its production may seem rigid, bourbon distillers have found myriad ways to express their creativity. As is the case with one of this month’s featured bourbons - the Temptation Straight Bourbon Whiskey. If the bourbon is aged in oak barrels for two or more years, it qualifies as a straight bourbon whiskey. While many distillers do use anywhere between 65% to 75% corn, there are others who favor rye. Redemption’s Bourbon is a perfect expression of high-rye bourbon containing almost 40% rye, giving the bourbon more wood spices, cinnamon and a dusting of cocoa. Although, not technically bourbon, rye whiskey is also undergoing a revival, even though the Distilled Spirits Council of the US has yet to recognize it as its own type of whiskey. Made from at least 51% rye, rye whiskeys are characteristically spicier, livelier and a tad drier than bourbon. The Redemption Rye, although only aged for 2 years, expresses spicy, crisp notes of cinnamon, clove, dark chocolate and even botanicals. It is a thoroughly enjoyable sipping whiskey, and a great base for cocktails.

5 Summer Wardrobe Vacation Packing Tips 1. Before you pack, always think of the destination, weather, activities, and duration of the trip. You always want to be appropriate and comfortable in your surroundings. You would not take the same clothes to a Caribbean beach vacation that you would to a New York City Broadway musical vacation.

2. Next, make a list of outfits that you will need for your vacation activities.

3. Choose a color palette that consists of 3 to 4 colors. And, make sure that at least 1 color is neutral, such as black or brown.

4. To avoid over-packing, choose your bottoms (shorts, skirts, or pants) wisely. You should be able to make at least two outfits with each piece.

And 5. When thinking about what accessories to bring, take only the items that coordinate with at least 2 outfits.

The truth is that everyone has a tendency to over-pack. We don’t want to run the risk of not having an item that we need. So, take some extra time and think of packing as a personal style session. Have fun with it by inviting a stylish friend over to edit your selections. Most times two heads are definitely better then one.

Also, don’t forget to choose an outfit that is both stylish and comfortable for the plane, train, or automobile ride. You never know who you might run into on the way to your destination.

This season, I recommend incorporating a pair of boyfriend jeans or a relaxed-fit denim shirt into your casual look.
