So, in that spirit, we kick 2013 off big and start the celebration with a trip to New Orleans in “Travel”. The article focuses on all the crazy and amazing things the Crescent City has to offer, from the food to the architecture, back to the food and then to the parties. New Orleans Marti Gras kicks off at the end of January and heads into February, not to mention it’s also host to the Super Bowl again this year.

NOLA BOUND Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler As you read this, thousands of people are preparing for a massive party. Floats are being re-touched with paint and playlists are being downloaded to create complimentary vibes. “Throws� are being bought, hotel rooms booked and parties planned. Spaces are being rented which will be converted into wonderlands for the celebratory balls that will be held. Booze is flying off the shelves and menus are being listed in scores of restaurants. A-List celebrities are making their travel plans to the city. The area is coming alive as residents schedule which krewes they plan to watch and gatherings to attend. It can only be Mardi Gras - New Orleans style - and to the Crescent City we head to sneak a peek of both the event and the town.

This year, the party starts early. Officially, floats will begin rolling down parade routes throughout the city on January 19th. Although, Superbowl XLVII threatened to cramp the city’s style (the Big Game will be held at the Superdome on February 3rd the date meant for the kick-off of festivities,) the nature of New Orleans’ flexibility won the day. City officials pushed forward the date of the opening and welcomed the NFL Championship game simultaneously.

The festivities will last nearly 3 weeks this year - from January 19th through February 12th. During that time, locals and visitors alike will stand along parade routes and watch the spectacle - such as the float being prepared by the Endymion Krewe.

This will be the largest ever seen not only for this city but worldwide. A $1.2 million pricetag is attached to the 330-foot long, eight-segmented behemoth. It will host nearly 230 riders throwing beads and toys as they glide down NOLA streets. In this city, parades are not only something to behold but are cherished by those who live here. They take them very seriously and scope out the best spots on the routes to support their favorite krewes. This year, the city is like an expectant mother awaiting the unveiling of the Endymion float.

Fat Tuesday is the last day of celebration before entering the Christian Lenten season. In the French Quarter, off Jackson Square, Saint Louis Cathedral will be

packed with parishioners on Ash Wednesday - the official end of Mardi Gras. But, one doesn’t have to be Catholic to admire the cathedral. Millions of visitors, from every denomination, enter this quaint, historic cathedral annually to take tours or just have a look around. The flags that are hung from the cathedral’s beams capture attention as they present a microrepresentation of the history of the city.

The Ville de La Nouvelle-Orléans was founded on May 7, 1718, by the French Mississippi Company under the direction of Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The port town was named after Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Orléans who was Regent of France at the time. The French held onto their colonial lands through 1763, at which time New Orleans was ceded to the Spanish Empire through the Treaty of Paris.

While most know that the city began as a French outpost, often people are bewildered by the architecture of the French Quarter (the Vieux Carré). It doesn’t appear to have many French characteristics. That is because the surviving architecture of the Quarter dates from the Spanish period of the city’s history. In 1801, the territory reverted back to the French and remained under France’s control until Napoleon sold it to the United States during the Louisiana Purchase.

After the Purchase, a rapid influx of Americans, French, Irish, Germans and Africans flooded the city. Creoles, who are the descendants of the original French settlers of the area, began to compete with the new residents. With the end of the Haitian Revolution in 1804, thousands of refugees - both white and of color - arrived to New Orleans. While the Governor of Louisiana at the time made every attempt to keep the refugees out - the Creoles wanted to increase the French speaking population of the city and, therefore, welcomed the new immigrants with opened arms.

As the city grew, lines of demarcation were drawn. The Creoles and French speaking population occupied the Vieux

Carré, now known as the French Quarter due to it’s population.

Meanwhile, the “Americans” moved uptown and into the Garden District to create their neighborhoods. During the Civil War, the Union captured New Orleans early, sparing the destruction that other major cities in the South endured. Although, during the War of 1812, the Battle of New Orleans was a significant firefight, the city did not sustain the level of damage during the Civil War.

Following the war, New Orleans drew people into its limits from throughout the country. The Creole elites feared precisely what then occurred.

French language instruction was abolished in the schools and by the end of the 19th century, the usage of the language throughout the city greatly diminished.

Although, to this day, Louisiana still follows the Napoleonic Code for governance, it was during this period that the “French Way” fell into decline. It was also during this period that the entire city fell into decline. Prior to 1860, New Orleans was the 5th largest U.S. city.

Throughout the 20th century, the city lost its attractiveness and stature.

The Bon Temps still rolled but stagnation enveloped the Crescent City as it became increasingly dangerous and economically strained. And, then, during the last week of August in 2005, a tropical storm developed over the Bahamas with its path directed towards the Crescent City. On August 29th, Katrina made landfall, breaching levees and creating the most comprehensive natural disaster in the history of the United States. The world watched on televisions as thousands of people were stranded and struggled for survival. While the French Quarter and the Garden District escaped destruction, the floodwaters submerged the rest of the area and collapsed the city. When finished, Katrina and its aftermath cost the lives of nearly 1,500 Louisianans. The vast majority of those in New Orleans.

Nearly eight years later, residents of New Orleans still use “The Storm” or “Katrina” as part of their daily vernacular. But, the resolve and spirit of those who inhabit this city have far surpassed the effects of the hurricane. While there is still much

work to be done in several wards, the buoyancy and positive determination of the people who live here is infectious, as they have rebuilt the city they love. And, there is so much to love about this city. From the Quarter to the Warehouse District to Uptown and the Garden District, it is impossible to visit New Orleans and not be amazed by the plethora of things to see and do.

New Orleans is a foodie’s town. That is without question.

Locals, during breakfast are already planning lunch and while eating lunch are making dinner reservations. Some of the best restaurants in the country are found in this city with its diverse menus of fare. In November 2012, Travel + Leisure again anointed this city as the leader in the category of local restaurants. (The magazine also awarded NOLA as “America’s Favorite City” and cited firsts in fourteen other categories.)

Dining establishments proliferate the city and offer all types of food - from modern American to Creole to seafood. And, this is the city in which to partake.

If you happen to be in the French Quarter and are looking for a place to feed your appetite try Gallatoires (209 Bourbon Street) The restaurant has been in service for the past 160 years

with full effects. Locals have their own tables and the food is serious. If you don’t have the time to spare for formal fare, drop

by Port of Call (838 Esplanade) and order a cheeseburger. It will be one of the best you have ever eaten. Or, if you are in the mood for seafood, Deanies (841 Iberville Street) fits the bill.

Most seafood in the city is served fried and at Deanies there is no exception. The fried catfish practically melts in your mouth.

(If you have a car and don’t want to be surrounded by tourists, Deanies also has a location in Bucktown which is frequented by nearly all locals.)

Moving Uptown and into the Garden District area of the city, Commander’s Palace (1403 Washington Ave.) is a must.

This establishment, nearly 135 years old is loved by locals and offers modern New Orleans cooking paired with Haute Creole dishes. Reservations are required (best to make them as far in advance as possible) but they are worth it, particularly for the Sunday brunch. Turtle soup, Creole Beef Tostados and Abita Root Beer and Granny Smith Buckle are just a few of the items on the menu. On the other end of the spectrum is The Camellia Grill (626 South Carrollton Ave.) Camellia’s is a classic diner and is sure to please. Make sure that you order a slice of pecan pie

- what they are known for - and watch it being warmed on the grill. Also, in this area is Jaque-Imo (8324 Oak Street), which is a casual restaurant that takes its food very seriously. Generally, tables are full of locals who are having dinner before heading next door to The Maple Leaf to take in Rebirth, a New Orleans tradition, on Tuesday nights.

And, the people of New Orleans make their cuisine accessible to all. At the Crescent City Farmer’s Market, local chefs (many of them celebrities) demonstrate their culinary expertise through demonstrations on the market’s grounds.

Those who live here will swap recipes with strangers and waiters will explain ingredients in dishes with an expertise.

It is not just food that New Orleans is known for - equally important to the legacy of this city is its roll in the birth of jazz.

The greats have all played here and Louis Armstrong was born here. It is impossible to walk through the city and not hear trumpets being blown and saxophones emitting fantastic sounds. Whether you are in the Quarter near Cafe du Monde (famous for it’s cafe au lait and beignets) or strolling down Magazine (taking in boutiques and antiques) the sounds of the city are everywhere. If you do happen to be in the French Quarter, be sure to visit Preservation Hall. Established in 1961, its mission is to preserve, perpetuate and protect one of America’s native born art forms - traditional New Orleans jazz. The city’s finest performers give nightly concerts.

If food and jazz aren’t enough for the visitor, tons of activities and historical settings capture their attention.

Traditional shotgun houses, Creole townhouses and the Antebellum homes on St. Charles Avenue create a diverse architectural mashup. Galleries along Julia Street in the Warehouse District offer First Saturday night viewings every month. Chartres and Royal Streets provide shops to discover antique finds. “The Fly”, which is the riverside portion of Audubon Park is where locals play baseball games, children play in the park and everyone watches the riverboats rolling

by on the Mississippi. A day pass can be purchased which includes admission to the Audubon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas and the ferry, which takes visitors back and forth between the two.

Of course, many visitors come to New Orleans to tour the Garden District. This area of the city was laid out in 1806 by Barthelemy Lafron as an open, semi-urban system of parks and basins. Since it’s inception, prolific houses and mansions have occupied the area. And, in these houses the creme of society have lived. Aside from NOLA society, celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Sean Pean, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Ann Rice, Emeril Lagasse, Nicholas Cage and Matthew McConaughey have all lived Uptown/Garden District.

The football phenoms known as the Mannings (Peyton and Eli) grew up in this district and the current quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees lives here now.

Following Katrina, the football team of New Orleans, the Saints, brought the city together. Drew Brees and players from the New Orleans Saints not only provided those who lived there with inspiration as they rebuilt but were hands on during the reconstruction. Locals have not forgotten and the city is not only “Who Dat Nation” between August and February but all year long. Brees is accepted as a native son and black and gold have become as important to the locals as the colors of Mardi Gras.

New Orleans is a party town. While Bourbon Street is a popular tourist destination in the Quarter, Frenchman Street quite near boasts a bevy of local bars and clubs that don’t only offer Hurricane drinks. And, near Frenchman is Bar Tonique, one such venue where fun can be had without consternation.

Although, the city is not just about having fun - it is jam packed with history, culture, food and music - if you venture to the Crescent City during Mardi Gras, be prepared to be an active part of one of the biggest parties on the planet. For that New Orleans is known and they are proud of this accomplishment.

A President’s Paradise

Monuments have been erected to him, bridges and parkways named after him and eight universities and three colleges bear his namesake. A state and the capital of the country are dedicated to him. Seven mountains, 121 towns and villages, 33 counties and ten lakes are in his honor. Across the entire length of the country, George Washington is celebrated.

It is not just in the United States his name is respected. Outside of the country, “Washington Avenue” and “Washington Street” are found on city maps such as those of Rome, Hamburg and Paris. A small town in Cuba is called George Washington and Parque Washington can be found in Barranquilla, Colombia. The country and world can be both reverent of and at home with George Washington, but our first president found his peace while at home on the grounds of his Mount Vernon.

“I can truly say I had rather be at home at Mount Vernon with a friend or two about me, than to be attended at the seat of government by officers of State and the representatives of every power of Europe.” - George Washington.

Washington was a bit of a homebody. It has been recorded that he spent 434 days in residence at Mount Vernon while serving his two terms of presidency. At the estate, he would farm, build, experiment with cross-breeding in his botanical garden and entertain friends. The door of the mansion was always open and he and his wife, Martha, welcomed those who traveled from far and wide. Washington himself was the architect of the

expansion of the property and his home always gave him great pleasure.

When Augustine Washington, George’s father, owned the estate, the smaller parcel of land was called Little Hunting Creek Plantation. Augustine had inherited the land from his father, John, who obtained the rights of ownership from the British crown in 1674. Upon George Washington’s father’s death, his step-brother Lawrence inherited the land. It was Lawrence that changed the name of the estate to Mount Vernon in honor of Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon who had been his commanding officer in the British Royal Navy. But, after Lawrence’s untimely death in 1752, the subsequent remarrying of his widow and death of his child, George Washington bought the property.

It is a bit ironic that the man who selflessly commanded the Continental Army and fought British troops occupied a home named after one of the British military’s finest - but, Washington chose not to change the name and it has remained Mount Vernon ever since.

When most think of Mount Vernon, the main house immediately comes to mind. Today, the home is decorated with

the original furnishings of the Washingtons. It reflects the house as of the year 1799, the last year of George Washington’s life. Walls have been repainted their original colorings and reflect both the wealth and style of their inhabitants. From the glassware set on tabletops to the harpsichord surrounded by 18th century furniture to Washington’s chair itself, it is live history visitors encounter. This includes the key to the Bastille, which hangs prominently for all to see and was presented to Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette. Daily tours, 365 days of the year, are given which highlight personal objects and anecdotes of George Washington. Since the house was open for public viewing in 1860, nearly 80 million visitors have arrived to see the splendor of the estate. In 1960, Mount Vernon was designated a national landmark.

Mount Vernon, however, is much more than the house where the Washingtons slept. It is a living and breathing estate that George Washington carefully planned and organized himself and for many different purposes. As the chief architect, he oversaw all building and design. The outbuildings of the main house - blacksmith house, greenhouse, spinning house, salt house, smokehouse, slave and clerk’s quarters were beehives of activity while the Washingtons lived here. The multiple gardens that Washington had planted remain today as they were when placed under his direction during his residence.

Washington carefully planted gardens, which featured unusual 18th century flowers. The Upper Garden of the estate was planted in 1762 as a nut and fruit garden. The planting areas are all edged with boxwood and fruit trees, shrubs and roses dominate the turf.

The most formal element of this garden is the gracefully created fleur-de-lis, through a recreated boxwood parterre, which is believed to show Washington’s respect for both his friend Lafayette and the assistance the French people provided the American people during the Revolutionary War. In contrast, the Lower Garden, was a practical house garden from which the vegetables and fruits used in the preparation of meals were pulled. Lettuces, beets and beans shared space with apple and pear trees.

The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, who oversee the estate, have carried on the tradition of the Washingtons and the gardens have remained as close to their original descriptions as possible.

Gardening is not just about the bounty of now, but the cultivation and crossbreeding of crops for the future. George Washington was quite serious in this pursuit.

He spent much time in his botanical garden experimenting with growings. Keeping detailed records, he grew a variety of plants and spent much of his life observing their interactions and progressions. As a working farm, Mount Vernon produced flax, hemp, cotton and silk. Washington not only sought new, sustainable crops but those that would make the estate completely self-sufficient.

Another aspect of the goal of self-sufficiency which is easily identified is Pioneer Farm. Washington made great efforts to improve his farming techniques by experimenting with crop rotation, fertilizers and plowing. Aside from common farm animals, Washington also bred sheep on the estate. Today, at Pioneer Farm, visitors watch horses tread wheat in a two-story, 16-sided barn that Washington planned and constructed. Treading demonstrations take place daily from July through September and cooking and farming demonstrations are held daily from April through October.

One part of the estate that caused an uproar of controversy in the early 20th century is the distillery that Washington not only had built but sold product from.

In 1933, the Commonwealth of Virginia, as part of a Depression era public works program, allegedly decided to restore the grist mill which is located on the property.

When the excavations unearthed a distillery, authorization was given to “re-bury” the site. America was in the midst of National Prohibition and it would be unseemly that the first president not only sipped the golden liquid but sold it. Americans would be shocked. Particularly as the “dry” movement featured quotes of Washington and the Washington Temperance Benevolence Society (based out of Baltimore) explicitly identified themselves with George and Martha Washington. The story was leaked to the Associated Press and featured in newspapers throughout the country. Once Prohibition ended, whiskey makers started using Washington’s recipe for their sauce. The distillery was rebuilt from the ground up and today still makes Washington’s blend - 60% rye, 35% corn and 5% malted barley. It is sold, in limited quantities, at the outpost’s shop.

Much different from when Washington controlled the works during his tenure - in 1799, the distillery produced upwards of 11,000 barrels of whiskey during the year. It was the biggest success of Mount Vernon.

Coupled with the distillery was the gristmill that Washington ran and is still present on the estate. In 1771, to increase production of flour and cornmeal, the first president constructed a 16-foot waterwheel. Mount Vernon then exported flour and cornmeal of high quality to the West Indies, England and Continental Europe. The gardens, distillery, farm and gristmill created an estate that produced high quality goods for both sale and for the Washington’s private consumption.

For those living in our area, Mount Vernon has the ability to spoil. The estate offers activities year-round. It also offers multiple walking tours that explore the grounds and offer guests well-rounded perspectives regarding different attributes of the estate itself. Some are free of charge, such as the Garden and Landscape tour. This tour is a 30-minute guided tour that examines the gardens of Mount Vernon. Or, the Slave Life tour, which highlights the lives and contributions of the slave community who operated the estate. Some tours have a nominal charge ($5) such as the Dinner for the Washingtons tour. This tour showcases the cultivation and preparation of food that was served at the dinner table of George and Martha. It also highlights dining at Mount

Vernon in general. Whichever tour is chosen, chances are the participant will learn a great deal more about the Washingtons, the estate or the practice of farming that the proprietor enjoyed.

What is striking when discussing Mount Vernon is its simplicity among all of its moving parts. Compared to European counterparts, such as Versailles, the simple forms and structures of the estate wouldn’t register a tick on the opulent master scale of the residences of European royalty. But, all that is new and natural, like the emerging country itself, which purposefully lacked an aristocratic leader, is reflected in the gardens, the mansion and the grounds of Washington’s residence. It is an American residence - the first American residence - and Mount Vernon is cherished as such.

In a soup pot, melt the butter, add the cinnamon, star anise, black peppercorns, cloves, and onions. Cook until onions are tender. Add squash and brown sugar, season with salt and pepper. Add the stock and, simmer until squash is fully cooked.

Blend the soup in a blender in small batches. Strain through a chinois.

Noodles • Heat small amount of oil in a hot wok and add chilies, red onion, scallion, bean sprouts.

• Cook for about 30 seconds until tender • Add garlic, xo sauce and bloom for 15-20 seconds • Add noodles and cook out for about a minute, until tender. Take care to not over work and break up the noodles • Add sambal and deglaze wok with Xiao Xing • Season noodles with oyster sauce and soy mix • Adjust seasoning with szechuan salt and sugar • Place in bowl and garnish noodles with scallion white bias and cilantro

Pork • The belly is split in half long ways, and then those two pieces or cut in half.

• This leaves you with 4 pieces measuring about 3.5” by 8” • The slices are then cut to approx 3.5” long by about ¼” ½” wide • Heat a small amount of peanut oil in a medium sautee pan • Season pork lightly with szechuan salt and black pepper • Sear on both sides until golden brown and crispy • Deglaze pan with garlic sauce and reduce to a glaze • Shingle on top of Mai fun noodles • Garnish with crispy fried chopped garlic, cilantro and scallion green bias.

In a microwave, melt together butter and chocolate.

Slowly whisk in egg yolks and set aside In a separate bowl, whip egg whites until froth Add cream of tartar and half of the sugar and whip whites to a soft peak At this point, add remaining sugar and whip to stiff peaks Gently fold ½ of the whipped egg whites into the chocolate mixture Once completely incorporated, add remaining egg whites Coat the inside of a souffle ramekin or bowl with butter Then coat the butter with granulated sugar.

Place batter in ramekin and level off Bake souffle at 375F for 10-15 mins until souffle has risen 2 1/2”-3” above the rim of the bowl.

Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

THE MARTINEZ A true classic, the Martinez Cocktail is what many people credit as the first martini. What better way to kick off 2013 than to showcase the beginning of one of the world’s most popular drinks!

Modern day spirits are much more refined than spirits from the 1800’s, which has led to a trend of people drinking “Dry” Martini’s. However, that is the exact opposite of the Martinez Cocktail. The “old tom” style of gin lends a sweetness and extra depth that differs it from “London Dry” gin. In addition, instead of a “Dry” drink, with no vermouth, this one utilizes plenty to create a robust and layered taste. While the formula varies in almost every mention from the “Savoy Cocktail Book” of the 1930’s to the most recent edition of the “Bartender’s Black Book”, the most important thing to remember when making this drink is to stay as true as possible to the original ingredients and quality of products. This drink will be a crowd pleaser and talking point at any new year party, and a great mainstay addition in 2013’s cocktail repertoire.

GLASSWARE Chilled Cocktail Glass

INGREDIENTS 1 ¾ ounces Ransom Old Tom Gin ½ ounces Dolin Dry Vermouth ½ ounces Dolin Rouge Vermouth ¼ ounces Luxardo Maraschino Liquor 3 dashes orange bitters Garnish: Flamed Lemon Peel

DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients into a mixing glass, and then add plenty of ice. Stir 40-50 times and using a strainer, pour the drink into a chilled martini glass. Take a small, circular shaped, cut of lemon peel (making sure to not cut into too much of the fruit itself), hold the peel in one hand over the drink, and in the other hand hold a flame (lit match, lighter, etc). Hold the peel close to the flame as to quickly heat up the skin of the lemon peel. With a hard squeeze, release the natural oils of the lemon peel into the flame. The result should be a larger flame that allows the oils from the lemon to gently mix into the drink. Rest the flamed peel in the drink, serve and enjoy!

A SPARK OF INFERNAL When the French government banned Maurin Quina Advertisements in the early 1900’s it was due to the artist Leonetta Cappiello’s use of “Infernal Imagery”.

That aspect along with the “devilish” good tastes in this drink is what defines its “infernal guilty pleasure” qualities.

To kick off 2013 in a right way, one needs a strong spirit that will breathe life into any party. 100 percent agave Tequila, un-aged, always seems to fit the bill. The smooth and sweet, the herbal flavors, all followed by the end bite, define Blanco tequila, and help to kick off this drink the way tequila kicks off an eventful night. Maurin Quina, “The Green Devil,” utilizes deep, rich, cherry, and bittersweet, flavors to further entice the pallet. The finishing touch of Sweet Sparkling Rosè adds a crisp refinement, as well as a little “nice” to the “naughty,” and delivers a drink that will taste as incredible as the potential for 2013!

INGREDIENTS 2 ounces of Calvados ½ ounce Cointreau Noir ½ ounce Dolin Dry Vermouth ¼ ounce Green Chartreuse Garnish: Flambé Apple Slice

DIRECTIONS In a stainless steel small saucepan add calvados, sugar, and apple slices. Heat the mixture till the point of boil, and using a match or crème brulè burner light on fire. Cook down until the apple slice has a nice char to the outside. Extinguish flames, and using tongs, set apple slice into the prepared drink.

Combine ingredients into a mixing glass and add ice (as much as possible). Stir 50 times, and strain neat into

a brandy snifter. Garnish with the flambéed apple slice.

I HOPE THIS WORKS It’s not too many times you will see a cocktail that has been turned into a pastry. Tried multiple times, almost never ending well, I Hope This Works.

On a freezing night, most common for January, when most are suffering colds and flus, nothing helps to ease the pain quite like a hot cocktail. To create a true soothing, look to the strength and comfort of bourbon and hot water, a mixture reminiscent of “grandpa’s old cough syrup”, one to truly shed a cold embrace. The sweetness of the corn, honey liqueur, and cherry syrup are unlocked by hot water. In the same instance the bold flavors mix together to create a taste and aroma that livens and soothes the senses. The finishing touch of the sweet egg white meringue and brulèe garnish combine a dessert and a drink, to fully transport the drinker away from the cold January night. INGREDIENTS 2 ounces Bourbon 2 ounces Hot Water ½ ounce Barenjager ¼ ounce Monin Black Cherry Syrup Egg white Foam Garnish: Cinnamon and Sugar Brulèe

DIRECTIONS Into an Irish Coffee glass, pour bourbon, barenjager, and monin black cherry syrup. Add 2 ounces of hot water, and stir until all ingredients are properly mixed.

Fill the rest of the glass with Egg white foam (a simple meringue made from half egg whites and half simple syrup). Dust the top of the foam with sugar and cinnamon. Brulèe the top of the meringue, crack with a spoon, serve and enjoy.

Link Locale will house startup companies, entrepreneurs, freelancers and teleworkers. > Arlington has created a 6-year “Transit Development Plan” for Capital Bikeshare, the first such plan for a bikesharing system in the United States. > Robert Wiedmaier’s popular Belgian roadhouse on Woodmont Avenue has been rechristened “Mussel Bar & Grille” to alleviate any confusion, and to presumably net a larger nonmollusk-eating crowd. Frank Shull, chief operating officer and partner in Wiedmaier’s RW Restaurant Group, said he believes many people who don’t eat mussels were shying away from the restaurant. It’s not always simple to define, but you know it when you see it. Hollywood Regency was born in the 1930’s, during Hollywood’s Golden Age, when designers like Dorothy Draper and Billy Haines began designing opulent rooms for Hollywood’s elite. Crystal chandeliers, tufted furnishings in Rococo styling, and reflective surfaces galore were the typical staples you’d find in these over the top rooms.

f you’re picturing Hollywood starlets lounging on velvet fainting couches and fur rugs, you’ve got the right idea. Hollywood Regency experienced a surge in popularity during the 60’s, after a revival of the classical style. The glitz and glamour of the 1930’s added a new layer to mid-century modernism. But, these days, its popularity proves it isn’t a thing of the past.

Hollywood Regency showcases original glamour with a modern flair. A perfect example would be Kelly Wearstler’s designs that adorn the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica. Pops of color, geometric patterns, lacquer, and crystals sing in perfect harmony in each room of the California hotel, which has become one of the most iconic versions of modern Hollywood Regency design.

If you’re looking to add some Hollywood glamour to your home, here are some basic characteristics to help you achieve the signature look.

When shopping for furniture, keep ‘luxe’ in mind, but don’t be afraid to go for high drama. Start by looking for tufted sofas with shiny nail heads and chairs in interesting colors or prints. Lacquered furniture is a must have. High gloss finishes are a staple in the Hollywood Regency look.

Black and shades of white are the most commonly used colors in Hollywood Regency décor and they are almost always incorporated in a room’s color scheme. Palettes can include anything from pops of primary colors to the monochromatic use of subdued hues, but accents of black or white are sure to make an appearance somewhere.

Texture is important when glamming up your space. Use rich, luxurious fabrics throughout your room. Velvet drapes, satin pillows, and faux fur rugs will make you feel like Hollywood royalty.

Reflectivity plays a key role in creating your regency look. Mirrors are a fundamental piece and need not be limited to hanging on a wall. Mirrored dressers and tables add tons of sparkle and light. If mirrors don’t add enough reflection to your space, try adding extra sparkle with details in silver and gold.

In 2013 I want to dare you to be you! So often as women, we can be overly critical of ourselves. This criticism results in down playing our natural beauty and personal style. Take some time this year to develop your individual tastes. Truly think about the message that you want to send to the world, and express it through your style. Remember you only have 20 seconds to make a great first impression, so make it count!

I always advise my clients to purchase the best handbag, shoes, and statement accessories (such as a watch or necklace) that their money can buy. Why? Because these are the items that people first look at when they are sizing you up. While you’re 100% silent, these items are saying, “I’m successful, and I’ve got myself together”. I truly don’t believe that you have to be a millionaire to look like one. Simply take your time and look for items that are made from quality materials and constructed well, and don’t settle for second best. Also, don’t be afraid to spend a little more on the items you will wear often. When you’re wearing something you’re not crazy about, it truly shows in your body language. Your handbag, shoes, and watch are items that you will wear daily, so you have to love them. Here are a few of my favorites…
