TRENDING NOW After a year that guided many of us to spend so much time at home, 2021 gives us opportunities to bring comfort and creativity to our living spaces. There are many new design trends this season allowing us to easily adapt and transition our homes into calm spaces while utiling a smart approach to design.

One major trend in both interior design and fashion is a reflection of a unique global perspective. With warmer tones now often being favored over cooler greys, they are easily translated into the home and inspired by earthy warm color palettes and natural textures. The global Influence trend pairs perfectly with wooden, woven and rattan home accessories. This rich textural expression is easily obtained through the use of these organic materials and vegetable-based fibers.

While wicker and rattan have long been furnishing favorites for outdoor living, their unique woven details have made their ways into chic indoor spaces. Woven rattan furnishings and dĂŠcor are durable while adding texture and a natural light feel to a room. The use of silk upholsteries, hemp curtains and cork walls continue to be popular and a simple solution to add texture to any space.

Rustic and natural woods are also being used in many ways this season. Creating a sophisticated rustic look is appealing to anyone who loves their modern home comforts but wants to inject character details into their living spaces. It works ideally in homes that already have interesting features, such as exposed beams, original floorboards or paneled walls. If you don’t have these features already in your home, you can easily recreate the look with a balance of old and new accessories and furniture pieces that work together in harmony. Reclaimed wood is the core material that holds this look together – look for pieces that show plenty of grain and texture, rather than items that are perfectly finished.

Nothing helps create an eclectic space like vintage accents and furnishings. Unique antique, repurposed, salvaged and retro pieces all have their place

in an eclectic statement. The key to this approach is to provide plenty of contrast. Build up a vintage-style scheme gradually. It’s the kind of look that needs layering so choose pieces over time that mean something to you. Add a few luxe elements such as rich fabrics and statement lighting to create a modern note.

As we long for tropical getaways, interiors inspired by distant shores offer a calm and relaxing living space. This island lifestyle helps to make a home feel safe and an inviting place to recharge. The casual lifestyle of Hawaii is definitely being reimagined this year. This trend features pops of tropical color, subtle monotones and soft yellows. There is also a focus on ocean blues – a key color trend for the year. Varying from deep inky tones through to soft aqua, blue is the perfect color for creating a tranquil home. The use of these shades of blue can capture the mood of relaxing poolside and beachside getaways.

You cannot miss the biggest movement of the moment - bringing the outside environment inside. Spaces this spring are being accessorized through the use of plants, tropical leaves and florals. Houseplants have

never been more fashionable. From retro 1970s-style hanging creepers to blowsy, beautiful blooms, there’s sure to be a plant to suit your style and space. Not only are plants beautiful, they bringing vibrancy and color to our homes. They also freshen the air, filtering out pollutants and releasing oxygen.

Lastly, the trend to really consider this year is personalizing your space. It’s time to make adjustments to the interior primarily for you, your lifestyle and your family. In this individual approach to design, everything that is important to you is taken into account and embraced. The interior is no longer limited to the framework of one style, but follows the needs and preferences of the owner. It is essential that the space embraces you while representing you. Your home is the most important place in your life. Here you relax, work, gain strength and spend time with loved ones.

When arranging such a significant space, you should be guided by the things that you love. However, if you are inspired by beautiful things, like infusing changes and are ready for them, embrace the trends of 2021 and make them your own.

Home A room-by-room guide on how to make any space a productive place

Since working from home has become the norm, and may be here to stay at least for the near future, most of us have settled into a routine in a certain spot in the house or may be in the process of renovating to make a space more functional - or might still be searching for that place that works for them. Designers share their top tips for making each space a productive work from home environment.

THE DEDICATED HOME OFFICE If the office is just for you, how much space do you need to spread out? Do you want or need to put everything away at night? Is it visible from other rooms or tucked away? All considerations dictate the ideal work place.

“The key for functionality is simplicity,” says Tracy Morris of Tracy Morris Design, www. tracymorrisdesign.com. Tuck away cords, keep the surface space clutter free, and consider mounting your monitor or incorporating floating shelves, she adds.

Furniture pieces can have dual uses, too. “A standup desk, a stylish writing desk, coffee tables that turn into desk space, storage ottomans, and flexible shelving units add versatility to an office,” says Keira St. Claire of Anthony Wilder Design/Build, www. anthonywilder.com. “The desk doesn’t need to be the centerpiece of the room.”

“To give an office a cozy feel, add lamps for a warm glow and other homey touches, such as candles, plants, throw pillows, and blankets,” says Morris.

“Lighting doesn’t get enough attention in home offices,” Elliott adds. Overhead lights can be harsh whereas ambient light from floor and table lamps are much more practical and appealing, and offer as much light. “Place a modestly-sized accent lamp on your desk to make the room feel especially inviting,” she says.

Even if you prefer working on the sofa with a laptop, you can create a functional home office space, says Elliott. “The trick is to have a small cabinet or a table with drawers or shelves nearby where you can stash office supplies and papers, plus recharge your laptop.” An attractive bookcase offers a place to neatly organize items, plus a wireless printer can be in another room and out of sight. “A chest that doubles as a coffee table keeps papers tucked away at the end of the day, too,” Elliott adds.

THE DINING ROOM “There are many places in the home you can set up to work without needing a formal desk, such as a dining room table,� says St. Claire. A dining room table often is the single largest surface in a home so it can accommodate papers and desk supplies, as well as several family members. A dual purpose storage cabinet in the dining room offers a place to tuck away office items when not in use.

THE KITCHEN/BREAKFAST ROOM

This breakfast room adjoins a hearth room, offering the option to work together or apart, in a custom home with interior design by Tracy Morris.

“We have an old Swiss farm table in our kitchen that I enjoy working at when I need to spread out a project,” says Hildreth. Kitchen islands typically offer extra seating, too, and are especially ideal for group projects. Consider creating multiple seating areas in adjoining spaces, so you can work together or apart.

THE BEDROOM Since a bedroom is often one of the quietest rooms in the house, it can be an ideal option for working from home. An antique slant top desk is a beautiful addition to a bedroom for an elegant surface. “Slant top desks serve as chest and desk and allow you to close your office at the end of the day by folding up the top,” says Hildreth. A small writing desk is also functional and beautiful, especially if placed in a window setting, adds Elliott. The extra light from the window enhances the soft lighting of a table lamp.

“Creative sitting spots can make all the difference in rooms that aren’t dedicated home offices,” says St. Claire. “These will help inspire you when you want to take a break from a desk and also offer a variety of places to sit throughout the day to enhance productivity,” she adds. The additional seating areas can double as meeting spaces if the need arises.

This year, the awards program was reimagined to take Covid-19 into consideration; each applicant was required to state a business initiative their firm implemented that focused on a creative and effective business measure taken in the face of the pandemic.

presented the award to A.J. Ballantine, owner of Cornerstone Remodeling, LLC in Ellicott City, Maryland as part of the opening keynote of the virtual 2020 Remodeling Show on November 16, 2020. The judges’ selection of Cornerstone was based on the company’s strong systems and processes, its decision-making during widespread Covid-19 shutdowns, and how quickly they instituted a buttoned-up approach to virtual client meetings and sales calls.

“The importance of creativity and innovation in the remodeling industry

keeps the award relevant each year,” says Bruce Case, adding that in the face of the pandemic, A.J. Ballantine and his team at Cornerstone Remodeling exemplified these traits by creating a remote engagement strategy that ties design software, including 3D viewer apps and AI technology, with estimating capabilities. Remote engagement, tagged #remotequote, will remain a permanent fixture in Cornerstone’s offerings.

& Remodelers, Fred Case, included Bruce Case, Kermit Baker of Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, and last year’s recipient, Richard Laughlin of Laughlin Homes & Restoration. The prestigious award is known within the industry for its rigorous applicant vetting process and intense focus on business practices, as well as for its $10,000 prize given to the winner.

Every year, the applicants are asked to describe two initiatives in their

business that demonstrate entrepreneurial innovation focusing on new business practices, creative use of technology, and unique building products

or use of materials that have been implemented in their business over the last 3-5 years, with this year’s requirements adjusted in the face of Covid.

In addition, three 2020 finalists were also recognized, each receiving

$2,500: Joseph Irons of Irons Brothers Construction, Shoreline, Washington; Seth Larson of Stel Builders Inc. and Resilient Roofing, Inc., San Diego, California; and Von Raisanen of TraVek Inc., Scottsdale, Arizona.

To apply for The Fred Case Remodeling Entrepreneur of the Year Award, applicants must own a full-service remodeling business billing under $6 million in revenue and the business must have been continually operational during the previous three years. The award is for individuals or partners, not companies, who can demonstrate strength in four areas: community service, business acumen, achievement, and entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrate having made a lasting contribution to the remodeling industry.

The Fred Case Remodeling Entrepreneur of the Year Award was created in

2007 to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit of remodelers and the importance of creativity and innovation in the remodeling industry. The award is modeled after the professional and personal achievements of Fred Case, who is credited with pioneering the design/build concept in remodeling in the 1970s.

Fred’s vision and insight was instrumental in developing the first certification system for remodelers while chairing the National Education Committee of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). He also won the

CREAMY BAKED MAC & CHEESE INGREDIENTS 1 lb. dried elbow pasta 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups whole milk 2 1/2 cups half and half 4 cups grated medium sharp cheddar cheese - divided (measured after grating) 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese- divided (measured after grating) 1/2 Tbsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. paprika DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees F and grease a 3 qt baking dish (9x13"). Set aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. When boiling, add dried pasta and cook 1 minute less than the package directs for al dente. Drain and drizzle with a little bit of olive oil to keep from sticking.

While water is coming up to a boil, grate cheeses and toss together to mix, then divide into three piles. Approximately 3 cups for the sauce, 1 1/2 cups for the inner layer, and 1 1/2 cups for the topping.

Melt butter in a large saucepan over MED heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine. Mixture will look like very wet sand. Cook for approximately 1 minute, whisking often. Slowly pour in about 2 cups or so of the milk/half and half, while whisking constantly, until smooth. Slowly pour in the remaining milk/half and half, while whisking constantly, until combined and smooth.

Continue to heat over MED heat, whisking very often, until thickened to a very thick consistency. It should almost be the consistency of a semi thinned out condensed soup.

Remove from the heat and stir in spices and 1 1/2 cups of the cheeses, stirring to melt and combine. Stir in another 1 1/2 cups of cheese and stir until completely melted and smooth.

In a large mixing bowl, combine drained pasta with cheese sauce, stirring to combine fully. Pour half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with 1 1/2 cups of grated cheeses, then top that with the remaining pasta mixture.

Sprinkle the top with the last 1 1/2 cups of cheese and bake for 15 minutes, until cheesy is bubbly and lightly golden brown.

CRISPY FRIED CHICKEN INGREDIENTS 6 chicken thighs 6 chicken drumsticks 3 cups buttermilk 1/2 cup Buffalo Hot Sauce optional 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon pepper Dredging Mixture 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons onion powder 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon white pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 quart vegetable oil for frying DIRECTIONS In a large mixing bowl, whisk together buttermilk, hot sauce (optional, for added flavor), salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Add in chicken pieces. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate 4 hours.

When ready to cook, pour the vegetable oil in a skillet until it is about 3/4 inch deep. Heat to 350 degrees.

Prepare the breading by combining the flour, cornstarch, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, basil, white pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, and salt in a gallon sized resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Mix it thoroughly.

Working one at a time, remove chicken pieces from buttermilk mixture. Shake it gently to remove the excess. Place it in the breading mix and coat thoroughly.

Tap off the excess.

Place the breaded chicken into the 350 degree oil. Fry 3 or 4 pieces at a time. The chicken will drop the temperature of the oil so keep it as close to 350 degrees as possible. Fry each piece for 14 minutes, turning each piece over about every 2 minutes, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Remove from the oil and place on paper towels. Let them rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

BREAD PUDDING WITH BOURBON SAUCE INGREDIENTS PUDDING 1 (1-pound) loaf (4 cups) French bread, cubed 1 1/2 inches 1/2 cup raisins 2 cups milk 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar 2 large eggs slightly beaten 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg BOURBON SAUCE 1 cup packed brown sugar ½ cup butter or margarine 2 tablespoons whipping cream 3 to 4 tablespoons bourbon or 2 teaspoons brandy extract DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 1 1/2-quart casserole; set aside.

Place bread cubes onto baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until toasted.

Combine toasted bread cubes and raisins in prepared casserole; set aside.

Combine milk and 1/4 cup butter in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat 4-7 minutes or until butter is melted. Cool slightly.

Combine all remaining pudding ingredients in bowl; mix well. Add milk mixture; mix well.

Pour milk mixture over bread cubes. Bake 40-45 minutes or until set in center.

In 1-quart heavy saucepan, heat all sauce ingredients to boiling over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Serve sauce over warm bread pudding. Store in refrigerator.

CORPSE REVIVER #2 Glassware: Chilled Martini Glass Method: Add a dash of Absinthe to a chilled martini glass, swirl lightly as to coat the glass and then set aside. Combine ingredients with ice in a shaker tin and shake with ice. Discard the excess absinthe and then strain the mixture into the coated martini glass. Serve and Enjoy! *Note: While the recipe in the Savoy Cocktail Book does not contain a garnish, many like to use an orange peel.

Ingredients: 1 oz. Plymouth Gin 1 oz. Lillet Blanc 1 oz. Cointreau 1 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice 1 Dash Pernod-Ricard Absinthe Garnish N/A* It is believed that the “Reviver” family of drinks began somewhere in the 1860’s or 1870’s. The date may be in dispute. However, what is fact is that the family of libations was for a common goal……. to be had in the morning as a hangover cure! And that is what 2020 in the rearview mirror feels like, one huge hangover. Hence, the goal of the Corpse Reviver #2. A drink that has survived the ages, shooting to fame after its appearance in Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. Lemon juice is the start. Next, pairing Lillet Blanc (wine based) and Cointreau (spirit based) add the sweetness needed to balance the lemon and further enhances with notes of bright orange and tones of gentle fruit. The drink receives the addition of one of the original “cure all’s” – gin.

Bold, full of flavor, and originally created to help ingest medicinal botanicals, dry gin (one with little to zero sugar) is the ace in the deck needed to put this historical cure into context. As if this wasn’t all enough, to peak the drink, a touch of Absinthe adds a layer of black licorice that vaults the Corpse Reviver #2 into its legendary status. Strong as on ox, as enveloping as a winter blanket, this cocktail does it all. A sure shot to help forget about 2020 and move into 2021, the Corpse Reviver #2 is a great drink for the occasion.

SWEET SMOKE Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Combine ingredients into a mixing glass and stir with ice until properly chilled and diluted. Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass. Garnish, serve and enjoy! *Note: When originally appearing in JEH Nov-Dec 2012 this cocktail had a “Flambé” cherry garnish. Original directions are attached, but please be careful when attempting this at home or around other people!

Directions for Flambé Cherry: Skewer two Amarena or Luxardo cherries with a long metal skewer and rest in a metal measuring cup (allow enough length on end of the skewer to where it will not be directly over flame.) Then place approximately 1/2 oz.

Chivas Regal in the measuring cup. Using a Crème Brule kitchen torch, heat up the bottom of the cup till the scotch begins to bubble, then wave the flame from the torch over the scotch to light the scotch on fire. The flames of the scotch will slightly caramelize the sugar in the syrup, coating the cherries. Allow the cherries to continue to Flambé while preparing the drink.

Extinguish flame when ready to serve. Do not eat the cherries while hot!

Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Chivas Regal 12yr.

1 oz. of Ramazzoti Amaro .5 oz. Gran Classico .75 oz. Cherry Heering (or comparable cherry cordial) Garnish: Cherry* This lovely libation has a digestive design, meant to ease one into sweet and smoky relaxation from a long day (or an incredibly LONG 2020.)

Vibrant and rich cherry is the first taste out of the gate and sets an ever so delightful tone. The flavors that follow are the intrinsically deep and distinct notes of Italian amaro and digestivo. The coup de grâce is blended scotch. Here the Chivas Regal acts as a balancing act for the other ingredients. Slightly smoky, but not overpowering, this particular dram holds its own. A cocktail so good, the Sweet Smoke, had to be brought back as a JEH classic. It is perfect to sooth 2020 away. *Note: In no way does the name of the cocktail endorse the use of tobacco products.

AND I FEEL FINE Method: Build drink over ice in a Collins glass, without adding the sparkling rosé. Using a long bar spoon, stir until almost properly chilled.

Begin to pour in sparkling wine and stir until the drink is properly integrated. Garnish, serve and enjoy! *Note: if using a non-circular glass, then prepare in a mixing glass and strain over ice.

Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Italicus Rosolio Di Bergamotto .5 oz. Rabbit Hole Cavehill Bourbon 2 Dashes Lemon Bitters 2 Dashes Plum Bitters 4 oz. Sparkling Rosé Garnish: Lemon Twist (option – add edible flower if available.)

Champagne and liquors are no strangers and are steady bedfellows. Starting from those two positive points, this rascally remedy starts to formulate its debut. Next, the Italicus Bergamot liqueur,,,,,this sipper from overseas is not only exotic, but enticing.

The Italicus is joined by a beloved classic, Bourbon whiskey, making the perfect pair. The bright citrus of the Italicus plays base to the bourbon’s rhythm of vanilla, caramel and baking spice, creating a combined flavor that is smooth as silk. To better integrate the collective confectionary essences, bitters make for a well desired accoutrement. Citrus and stone fruit, another longstanding duo, join the fold. Finally, the Sparkling Rosé adds sparkle, but make sure it’s a dry one, as too much dosage can lose itself and overpower the flavors. 2020 was not easy, yet the world still spins. Hopefully with a good drink in hand, we can all say “And I Feel Fine.”

The Pandemic Continues and You Need to Protect Your Most Important Asset WRITTEN BY MARC S. SCHLIEFER, CFP® PRESIDENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNER

In my last article, we talked about plans to handle a volatile stock market and how to help protect yourself from volatility. We also talked about how to help protect yourself and your assets if the market were to take a negative turn, similar to what it did last winter. The market has hit record highs since the lows of last March and things have recovered very nicely.

I am writing this a week before Christmas, so when you read this article, I have no way to predict which way the market will be looking at that time. This time we will look at what can and should be done to help protect your assets through insurance protection and ways to keep enough money available, just in case.

Here are some of the first things that we recommend to our clients that you should consider to protect yourself and your family. The most important thing that a working family needs to do is to protect their most valuable asset during their working life, namely their income. Most working families have not had enough time to build up enough assets to continue their current lifestyle should something unfortunate happen. So, they need to make sure that they have enough disability insurance to pay for that lifestyle and also continue to put enough

money away for their future. Typically, companies and the government give you 60% of your salary as a disability benefit. Not all companies, however, offer disability coverage. If your employer does not offer group disability insurance or if you are self-employed, that is the second most important type of insurance protection that you should have after getting comprehensive medical insurance. Comprehensive medical insurance is a must for anyone because a major illness can bankrupt you.

Here are some of the basics about disability insurance...

As we discussed, many companies have group disability insurance that will pay you 60% of your salary up to some limit. If your company pays the premium for you and does not tax you on it, you will be taxed on the benefit that you receive while you are disabled. You should ask your company if you can be taxed on the premium if they pay it all or if you can pay the premium. The premiums and/or the taxes are much less than the benefit that you will receive should you become disabled.

Generally, group plans pay 60% up to $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 per month. Each company that 53

offers disability benefits has different options. If you are a high earner, sometimes the group insurance is not going to be enough for you to pay your living expenses. If that is the case, you should look at obtaining your own supplemental disability insurance.

There are several carriers that offer these plans and some of the key things to look for are the definition of disability. You also want to have residual or partial disability and a cost of living benefit.

The definition of disability should say that you are considered disabled that if due to sickness or injury, you are unable to perform the duties of your occupation. This is the best definition; it allows you to obtain full benefits and does not require you to work at another occupation if you cannot do the duties of your occupation. For attorneys and physicians that are specialists, you can get a definition and an accompanying letter that covers you in your specialty.

So, as an example, an orthopedic surgeon cannot be forced to give flu shots.

The next important provision is a residual or partial benefit. This benefit allows you to still work at your profession. However, if you cannot work a sufficient number of hours causing you to lose income, you will get paid a portion of your lost income. If you were making $250,000 and then became disabled and are now making $100,000 and your lost income percentage is 60%, you would be able to receive 60% of your disability policy benefit.

Usually, policies require that you need to lose at least 20% of your income to qualify for residual income benefit. And, if you lose more than 75% of your income, you will get the full benefit even though you are working in your occupation.

The next important feature that we will discuss is the cost of living feature. If you are disabled at age 35 and your benefit is $5000 per month, it may be enough to cover all your living expenses right now. If you are totally disabled for a longer time period, the purchasing power of your $5000 per month benefit will be reduced as each year goes by. Often, individual policies have an option to purchase a cost-of-living rider.

2021

The year 2020 will never be forgotten. There is not a single person who has not been affected by the global pandemic, either directly or indirectly, and while there is hope on the horizon that we will be able to begin the process of rebuilding and recovery in the new year, there are still many months ahead living this strange new life. Usually around this time of year, we turn our attention to goal setting for the next year, focusing on health and fitness, career and family or, maybe even travel. What do you do when that fresh new year is so uncertain?

For many, 2020 simply did not allow for some goals to be accomplished. However, is it wise (and even healthy) to reset those same goals for 2021?

This question really comes down to how best to manage expectations. If your 2020 goal was to crush an epic fitness challenge, but instead, you found yourself without access to a gym or worn down by home schooling and cabin fever, perhaps the best approach would be to set the big challenge as an ultimate goal without attaching a specific time frame and focus on smaller tasks such as building back a solid and consistent training regime. Even if you still don’t have access to the perfect training facility, you have spent long enough acclimating to how life looks in the pandemic to start getting creative. If you had planned to make healthy eating your number one priority, but rising stress levels left you emotionally eating foods that don’t support your goals, start 2021 by introducing one healthy habit at a time. Maybe it’s eating a green vegetable with your dinner at least 3 times per week or drinking an extra glass of water throughout the day.

None of us know what the landscape of 2021 will truly look like and unfortunately, at midnight on January 31st, the world will not do a major reset allowing life to return exactly to how it was prepandemic. So, with that in mind, bring your focus back to what you can control. Instead of setting grand goals, look at what you have let slip or had to put aside this past year and build an action plan that will move you a little bit closer to success. If your greatest wish is to travel and the big goal is to fly to a new continent – rather than viewing travel as an all or nothing scenario, look around and discover places nearby that you can explore safely. The new continent will still be there for years to come!

The past year has definitely done its best to test even the most disciplined. It is hard to stay motivated and positive when the daily news bombards us with alarming material. So, make it a daily practice to find a positive and spend a moment appreciating it. Get creative when you map out an action plan to

move you that little bit closer to your ultimate goal and never forget that even a little step in the right direction is still progress.

There is hope on the horizon. You will achieve the things you put your mind to, just approach the new year with the understanding that it really is one step at a time. Adjust your expectations so that you can appreciate the small wins and, if we all play our part to stay safe and healthy, we can get back to thinking big and aiming high.

The creative director debuted the finale of Ouverture of Something That Never Ended, a sevenpart miniseries showcasing the brand’s looks that will be in stores during the second half of 2021. Shot in Rome, the cinematic spectacle follows performer Silvia Calderoni throughout her day, from waking up in her apartment to performing errands around the city, bumping into a cast of eclectic characters. All are outfitted in the label’s new collection, which consists of a mix of timeless Gucci stalwarts: ’70s-style suits, bohemian dresses, and sportswear-inspired separates.” —Barry Samaha

VALENTINO “Pierpaolo Piccioli showed his latest collection for Valentino from Milan at the Fonderie Macchi, an industrial-feeling metallurgical foundry. It was a change up from the gilded halls of Paris for the Rome-based brand that just made sense in these COVID times.

Worry not, though, Valentino remains a brand dedicated to all things beauty.

Much of the collection is made of easy dresses woven in many incarnations of macramé, crochet, and lace. A series of silk blouses and denim looks (a collaboration with Levi’s) also speaks to that polished ease, while maintaining the romanticism Piccioli is synonymous with—this is a man who has put love poems on the seats of show-goers, after all. And lest you’re still looking for more romantic notions, a finale series of diaphanous, sheer, colorful gowns floats by like love letters to a more optimistic time.” —Kerry Pieri

STELLA JEAN “Switching it up while remaining true to your roots is Stella Jean’s approach this season. Her familial history is shown in the striped shirting toyed with throughout and the vibrant prints that color them; the former is a nod to her Roman father, the latter to her Haitian mother, and they mix together beautifully.

In her hands, the traditionally masculine shirt is turned into relaxed shapes that slide off the shoulder or are otherwise artfully undone, along with flirty minis and maxis. And while she typically immerses herself in another culture for the decoration (she teamed with a women’s group in remote Pakistan for last spring’s embroidery), COVID has forced her to stay local this go-round.

Jean also opted to show a bit differently this season, skipping the runway and participating in We Are Made in Italy, a digital showcase to highlight emerging Black Italian designers that she helped to organize. From creation to execution, she used every turn to say something, reminding us that fashion is about so much more than clothes.” —Leah Melby Clinton

VERSACE “We’re going to be candid, earth is a mess right now, so when Donatella Versace tells us her new collection “transports us underwater to Versacepolis,” where the rare beauty Medusa dwells, we’re ready to grab our passport and hit it. While so many collections took the pragmatic route this season to give the people the clothes they’re most likely to have an opportunity to wear right now, Versace went all in on the fantasy—a melding of mermaids, Miami and mythology. There’s suiting with oversized jackets layered over bikini tops and mini skirts, neon mini dresses in coral reef-inspired prints, color-blocked pastel short suits, and glimmering bra tops paired with easy sarong skirts. “I wanted to create something disruptive...,” Versace says, “To me that meant dreaming of a new world. But not just any outdoors: the manicured grounds of Villa Necchi Campiglio—aka the incredibly elegant Italian Rationalist mansion in Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love—to be exact. So, while we have the denims and khakis associated with long days spent outside, these looks have a decidedly polished Milanese vibe.

It’s rich but casual, a difficult to achieve balance that lands on target in louche white suiting, dark denim dresses, oversized leather jackets, and lace up boots.” —Kerry Pieri

VÌEN “Alt-rock inspired Vincenzo Palazzo to toy with hard and soft, feminine and brash, but this isn’t a story of a tear sheet tacked up to cork board and periodically referenced. Palazzo spent the quarantine period isolated in his hometown, a tiny hamlet in southern Italy, remembering what it felt like to be a teenager who dreamed of escaping, flying higher than the smallness around you, and using music to disappear for a bit. The clothes his indie-rock heroines wore in the ’90s were a real mash-up, and he goes for the same amalgam here, mixing impeccable tailoring with loose, shapeless dresses, and gauzy, transparent fabrics with shiny Cordura nylon. Playing with opposite ends of the spectrum can be tricky, but it’s a type of stylish rebellion that that kid listening to music in a sleepy country town would definitely have approved of.” —Leah Melby Clinton

PRADA “Prada’s spring 2021 show—the first co-designed by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons—was to have been the main event of Milan Fashion Week. The designers opted to film it without an audience and did a rare sit down Q&A following. Their theme was the uniform, a concept both have returned to over the years, Simons most recently in his exploration of American sportswear at Calvin Klein. “A uniform needs to also express something that is more timeless for me than a season specific fashion item,” said Simons. “My personal uniform is usually quite simple: black pants—Prada, not because I work here, since ten years or more—and a shirt,” he added cracking a smile. “I personally go from one uniform to another one,” said Prada. “My last love is a white pleated cotton skirt and a sweater.” Both of those personal uniforms were evident in the collection’s refined, focused silhouettes, namely, logo shell tops, straight pants, and pleated skirts. Many looks featured wraps fashioned from all sorts of materials: t-shirt jersey, fleece, re-nylon, embroidered duchesse satin, chiné taffeta. It was a cocooning mood that felt throughly of our work from home moment, while also offering a timeless sense of ease.” —Alison S. Cohn

D&G “Spring 2021 will always be remembered as Dolce & Gabbana’s “patchwork collection,” an explanation-notrequired moniker that future fashion historians can point to as an example of how designers adapted to circumstances beyond their control this season. The house was one of many who saw their access to fabrics affected by the pandemic, instead being forced to use bolts they might have had tucked away for a rainy day.

In their case, what was available wasn’t slim pickings, but luxe brocades, floral silks, and dotted chiffons.

Intriguingly, the print combos both exaggerated and disguised different signature aspects of Dolce. The bold clashes furthered the over-the-top feeling they’ve made a calling card while simultaneously making it harder to spot their Italian bombshell. There were bustier dresses and thigh-high slits (of course), but they didn’t whistle quite as loudly when tucked in amongst prints that positively shouted.” —Leah Melby Clinton

WINTER RESTAURANT WEEK Winter Restaurant Week is moving forward around DC. The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington announced an extended twoweek promotion from January 18 to January 31 with a bunch of new deals and offers to entice patrons of every Covid comfort level to support the local hospitality industry in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Construction has wrapped up on one of Amazon’s new, temporary office buildings in Crystal City.

The renovation project, part of developer JBG Smith’s extensive development plan for the area, helped to modernize the office building’s 273,000 square feet of space while giving the exterior a shiny new glass-and-steel look.

Similar to Summer Restaurant Week, the winter version will have a new emphasis on takeout and delivery for meals, to-go cocktails, and mobile wine pairings. There’s also more flexibility in price. Joining the 16th Annual DC JazzFest lineup, Dado Moroni will perform in a trio together with Stefano Bagnoli (drums) and Riccardo Fioravanti (double bass), two other great Italian jazz figures. Their set will include a tribute to the DC jazz greatest Duke Ellington and Shirley Horn, and Moroni’s own intriguing compositions.

Moroni’s artistic path is filled with success in Italy and abroad. He toured and recorded with many of the finest contemporary American and European jazz musicians like Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Ed Thigpen, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, George Robert, Tom Harrell, Lee Konitz, Al Grey, Lewis Nash, Ray Brown and Reggie Johnson among many others. In 1987 he was one of the judges for the First Thelonious Monk Piano Jazz Competition at the Smithsonian Institute.

Very well-known in Italy as a master Jazz drummer, Stefano “Brushman” Bagnoli is a real specialist in the use of brushes. Since 1978, he has been collaborating with some of leading Italian and foreign jazzmen. Author of the first Italian method on brushes, he is also a teacher in two music conservatories in Italy.

Riccardo Fioravanti, a veteran of Italian Jazz, can literally make people dance to his hypnotic bass lines and strong rhythmic feel, which add an element of surprise to the trio’s improvisations. He started playing the electric bass in 1973, and, only two years later, he went on his first tour as a professional musician with the pop song writer Alberto Camerini in 1975.

During his long career, he has collaborated with great figures of the jazz scene such as Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, Stevie Wonder, Slide Hampton, Kenny Barron, Enrico Rava and Ray Charles.
