Meet a few of John Carroll’s renowned faculty members.
“Faculty meetings are always about, ‘How do we invest more into these students?’ This is the core of who we are as a Jesuit university and our belief in cura personalis—care of the individual person. Sometimes people are lost in the crowd, but at John Carroll, it’s part of our DNA to identify the singularity, the individual in the crowd and to see each student as part of our family.”
In 2023, Ed Hahnenberg, Ph.D. was honored by the College of Arts and Sciences for his signature blend of rigor and approachability, and his sensitivity to helping students navigate the big existential questions raised in many of his courses.

ARCHAEOLOGY OF GREECE 2023 TRIP
“I am the biggest advocate for studying abroad. My semester in a small Italian village changed the way I view the world and the way I walk around in it every single day. From studying abroad in Italy to being a part of the Carroll Ballers—a group of 12 guys that play basketball at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center every Friday night—the experiences I’ve had are a step into the real world and where the majority of my growth and transformation have come from.”
Sure, you’ll find your place on our beautiful University Heights campus. But our high-impact experiences mean you’ll also find your place outside of the classroom—and have life-changing experiences along the way no matter what program you choose to study.
From short-term global adventures and semester-long study abroad programs like JCU in Rome, to internships, research projects, and lab work, John Carroll offers countless hands-on, once-in-a-lifetime learning experiences that don’t just teach. They transform. They’ll change the way you see the world and your place in it, and make sure that you graduate with the skills, connections, and confidence you need to push outside your comfort zone and navigate life after college.

TO IMPACT YOUR COMMUNITY
Community-engaged learning is a dynamic component of a John Carroll education. By applying what you learn in the classroom to real-world situations, you gain knowledge and experience that sets you apart and prepares you for your future career.
As an academic department, The Center for ServiceLearning and Social Action (CSSA) facilitates close to 100 community-engaged activities each week. CSSA is here to help you get involved, discover your passion, and gain practical experience that sets the foundation for a purpose-driven life.
Leadership development is essential to your success at John Carroll. Students take on leadership roles in CSSA as Student Liaisons, Interns, and Civic Fellows. Through these roles, you’ll develop professional skills including critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, communication and self awareness. You will also mentor your peers, serve as university ambassadors and contribute significantly to the student experience at John Carroll.
Through CSSA, you might tutor at local schools, garden with refugees at Ohio City Farm, or play basketball with residents at the Juvenile Detention Center as a part of the Carroll Ballers Program. These are just a few examples of the many opportunities that CSSA facilitates to strengthen academic outcomes, develop ethical leaders, and foster lifelong civic engagement.

Traditions matter at John Carroll, and when you join our community you don’t just become a member of your graduating class, or your academic program, or your residence hall.
You become a part of something so much bigger.
You become a part of traditions that are rooted in the past—like Christmas Carroll Eve, a candlelit procession and Mass to ring in the holiday season that’s been celebrated by John Carroll students since the 1960s—and newer traditions like Tower Time, when the entire John Carroll community takes a break and comes together for conversation, community, and coffee.
And for those times when you want to just live in the moment? UClub, a group of student leaders, plans events on- and off-campus every weekend, all year long. So whether you’re up for a night of video games in the ESports Lounge or a wild dodgeball tournament, an outing to a Guardians game, or hiking in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you’ll always find something to do—and somewhere to belong—at John Carroll.

Our diverse and vibrant community of learners and leaders offers an unparalleled college experience where you can explore your passions, discover your purpose, and make a positive impact toward a more just world.

What does it mean to find your place with people who share a commitment to your beliefs and values?
For many John Carroll students, belonging starts with faith, the bedrock of our Jesuit Catholic-based education that inspires each individual to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world. Our Campus Ministry welcomes students of all faiths and of no faith tradition to join together in search of deeper meaning and purpose in their lives. Through retreats, small faith communities, individual spiritual development and accompaniment, immersion experiences, prayer services and liturgies, and a variety of social justice initiatives that draw us back to the mission of a faith that does justice, Campus Ministry forges friendships while helping our students become men and women for—and with—others.
“Our purpose is not to fix but to learn. We hope that by guiding students to listen they will develop a broader sense of global suffering and ask how they can use their gifts, their lives, and their talents to contribute to a better world.”

IN OUR RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES
Where do students find the first—and most lasting—place they belong on campus? In our residential community, which includes a mix of residence halls, duplexes, and apartments that you’ll call home during your years at John Carroll.
The connections you’ll make living with friends, teammates, and study partners in our newly renovated residence halls, hanging out in student lounges, and sharing daily meals in Schott Dining Hall will cement relationships—and help you form new ones. And you can even deepen the bonds you’ve formed by spending a year (or more!) in one of our designated living-learning communities, where you share an entire floor with your fellow Arrupe Social Justice Scholars, Honors Program students, Social Innovation Fellows, or with your sisters and brothers in your sorority or fraternity.
At John Carroll, you live in University-sponsored housing all four years, with progressive options. During junior and senior years, you have the option to remain in the residence halls or move to duplexes and apartments.
Whatever housing you choose, the years you spend living just steps away from your advisor’s office, the D.J. Lombardo Student Center, Saxbys Coffee, and all the other conveniences of on-campus life will be as much a part of your college experience as the time you spend in the classroom.

Living-Learning Communities (LLC) are built upon the idea of grouping students within similar studies or with shared passions into a residential living community on campus. These arrangements provide students with increased access to specialized opportunities, resources, and programs as well as more contact with faculty in their related area. Students in the same LLC share experiences both inside and outside the classroom as they live, work, and study together.
