THE CARROLL COUNSELOR QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER

DEAR SCHOOL COUNSELORS,

As we start this new academic year, I want to extend my gratitude for your part in our collective purpose: helping students take the next steps in their education. Your role in this work has never been more crucial, particularly in light of recent challenges we’ve seen in higher education.

The U.S. higher education system is now beginning to see the impact of last year’s Supreme Court decision on affirmative action as it continues navigating questions of free speech, affordability, and institutional financial solvency. These issues present real challenges, but they also offer us a chance to innovate and lead with purpose.

At John Carroll University, we’re taking these challenges head-on with exciting new initiatives. We recently announced a $1 Million gift from the Jarosz family in support of our Mosaic initiatives which seek to foster community between exceptional students from diverse backgrounds and identities. In a year when colleges across the country are reporting decreases in enrolling first-year students from underrepresented minorities, JCU welcomed our largest class in 5 years, and by far our most diverse. The Jarosz Family Mosaic fund is supporting need-based campus visit travel, speakers, special events, and expanded partnerships with Community Based Organizations so all students find a sense of belonging at JCU.

The theme for our academic year on campus is Dialogue Across Difference. As a Jesuit university, John Carroll is ready to help young people navigate an increasingly polarized world. Ranked 7th in the nation for Students Most Engaged in Community Service (Princeton Review), our mission to walk with and care for others also fosters engagement between students of divergent perspectives. As a part of their first 40 days at JCU, the class of 2028 also watched the documentary, American Creed. Then cocreator Eric Liu arrived to train our faculty and students in

the art of mutual understanding. Aside from our First 40 programming, JCU is also a Sustained Dialogue campus, a thought leader in interreligious understanding through our Tuohy Center, and supports Democracy Fellows through our Center for Service and Social Action.

JCU’s value is resonating with students and their families: Our Inspired Futures initiative is nearing the completion of a 3-year, $100M investment in our programs, student experience, and physical campus. Graduates of JCU finish in four years 94% of the time, contributing to one of the best four-year grad rates in Ohio, right alongside our new North Coast Athletic Conference peers, Denison, Kenyon, and Wooster. And on a ranking whose methodology is 70% weighted by outcomes, JCU just landed on the Wall Street Journal’s Best Colleges in the U.S., putting us in the top 10% of all four year universities. Add to that endowed scholarships and major last dollar programs like our $2.2M National Science Foundation S-STEM grant, the class of 2028 brought with them the resources needed to provide a top-notch student experience for all. Whether your student is interested in business, healthcare, sports leadership, law, psychology, communication or another field, JCU should get a look this year.

In 2024-25, we’re excited to supplement what we’re doing for school counselors with even more: a CEU-granting webinar series, our inaugural Fly-In, and this newsletter to keep you up to date with JCU. You can feel the pride and the momentum all across campus, and I’m excited for our team to share more with you in the year ahead.

Warm regards,

OFFICE OF ADMISSION UPDATES

EARLY ACTION DEADLINE

Our Early Action application deadline is November 1, 2024.

COMMON APPLICATION AND COALITION APPLICATION

Students can now apply to JCU via either the Coalition Application or the Common Application. In addition to submitting an application with an essay, students will need to submit at least one letter of recommendation, and a high school transcript.

TEST-OPTIONAL AND NO-HARM TESTING POLICY

John Carroll is test-optional for Fall 2025 students, and we have adopted a no-harm testing policy. Test scores, if submitted, are one of many factors we consider when making admission decisions. Test scores can strengthen an application, and our “no-harm” policy means that if a student chooses to submit test scores that do not strengthen their application, the test scores are simply ignored. Any test scores submitted and used for admission are superscored.

DISCOVERY VISIT AND APPLY GRANT

Students applying for Fall 2025 that visit campus and submit their application* by our November 1 Early Action Deadline will receive a $2,000 grant.

*Only the application needs to be submitted by November 1—transcripts and other materials are not required by this date. An official visit to JCU includes any in-person visit or event hosted by the JCU Office of Admission.

FALL PREVIEW DAY - OCTOBER 26, 2024

We’re excited to invite your students to Fall Preview Day at JCU, one of our biggest events of the year! It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to experience life on campus. Throughout the day, they can explore our academic programs, enjoy lunch with the JCU community at Schott Dining Hall, tour a first-year residence hall, and much more.

PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCES SELECT DATES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Exclusively for seniors, veterans, and transfer students

Eligible students can schedule a Personalized Experience at JCU, and we will customize their visit based on their interests! Options include sitting in on a class, taking a campus tour, meeting with an admission counselor, having a one-on-one meeting with a faculty member in their chosen field, enjoying lunch at Schott Dining Hall, and more. We highly recommend these experiences for all students who want to gain deeper insight into life at JCU.
