There’s a passage in The Solutions where I wrote: “Liberty dies not with gunfire, but with paperwork. Not with tanks in the street, but with ‘just one more form."
This July, that line has come back to haunt me.
From Cape Town to Pretoria, the bureaucrats are barking. Ban the sale of single cigarettes. Track informal traders. Penalise those who try to survive outside the maze. Every week brings a new directive, a new regulation, a new reason to justify
micromanaging lives.
But these aren’t policies. They’re distractions. The real issues land title reform, youth unemployment, energy stability, and economic inclusion remain untouched, inconvenient, and carefully postponed.
We are witnessing the quiet displacement of constitutionalism by compliance, where natural rights are supplanted by conditional privileges, and the rule of law is confused with the rule of rules.
Liberty is not granted. It is presumed. And a free society is not maintained by sentiment but by vigilance.
Remain critically engaged. Resist intellectual laziness. And never confuse legality with legitimacy.
