South African and European model appearance of small modular reactors Kelvin Kemm June 29, 2022 The South African HTMR-100 small modular reactor looks like an industrial complex. It is supposed to look like that. That model was built from the existing plans of the real HTMR-100. It is all to scale, accurately, and the distance across the front is about 200 m. In other words; the entire reactor complex is similar to a soccer field. We intentionally designed the complex to be compact. But you could spread it out a bit if you want to, such as moving the admin building further away and moving the workshop.

South African High Temperature Modular Reactor - HTMR A number of people outside of South Africa said that the model looks unsophisticated, simple, and such terminology. They then compared it with the Rolls Royce model which looks like a space-age HQ company - Google or Microsoft.

When I spoke to the Rolls Royce people in London a model was on the table between us I asked them what is inside that? They replied; "nothing, it is merely an artist's concept."

If you look at that model you have to ask: where is the Nuclear Island (the potentially radioactive part) and where is the Turbine Hall? Where are the administration offices?

Are they inside the nuclear Island?

Then you look further and say; 'where is the road to carry heavy trucks? where are the power lines......' Furthermore, have a look at the actual size of the Rolls Royce building.

You can roughly work it out from the width of the road etc. It is huge, not remotely the size of our HTMR-100.

My point is that our model is real, it is not an artist's concept.

In addition, a power station is just that. It is an industrial workhorse like an industrial factory of any sort.

Our reactor was designed to make many smaller countries feel comfortable in acquiring one. It does not look intimidating. Most of the buildings and other assemblies can be built or assembled by the local work crews in any client country.

If the Customer wants an HTMR-100 to look all shiny and space-age we certainly can do that. Is it easy to get an architect to design glass walls and flashy shapes and colours for the exteriors of buildings.

The whole concept of SMRs should be promoted as inexpensive, safe, nuclear power which any country, or large company, could own and operate without any trouble.
