The exiting building has 2 entrances, one coming from the main road the other from the park.

Neighborhood buildings does not reflect on the sailing club’s design, establishing contrasts in-site.

The site also feature a large plot of green space located right adjacent to the existing building. facilities and amenities such as public carpark and jogging tracks can be easily located on site.

Roads and access are also readily available on site allow users to arrive the sailing club in comfort. the direction of winds from the sailing club was identified from the north. As breeze and wave tights of the ocean come rushing ashore of St. Andrews.

13PM The site is more shady during the winter, the building opposite the sailing club provides a shading element for the sailing house. july is the warmest month for st. andrews ranging in temperature from 19°c to 15°c.

While January is the coldest time of the month. temperature from 9°c to 7°c.

A study of overcast during the summer the sun path at St Andrews rises at 4:05am and sets at 9pm.

However during the winter the sun path at St. Andrews rises at 8:44am and sets at 3:46pm.

MATERIAL PALLET

Zinc cladding is a type of metal cladding. It comes in many different forms and sheets can be formed into shingles, cassette panels and flat-lock panels to suit any type of building. Zinc is sometimes chemically treated in order to slightly alter its naturally shiny finish.

Sandstone tiles and pieces with sawn-cut finish are used in driveways, pathways, patios and paving. Tumbled: In this finish, the sandstone surface loses its sharp edges and becomes smooth. For this, the sand stone is treated with small-size yet relatively stronger stones in a drumlike machine.

Slate is derived from shale-type sedimentary rock of clay or volcanic ash that underwent low-grade regional metamorphism. It is mainly composed of quartz and muscovite or illite. Some minerals like biotite, chlorite, hematite, and pyrite are also usually present in slate

Much like Pine wood, Spruce needs to be treated to reduce decay for outdoor usage. (ref) See Pine for more details. Without treatment the wood will last no longer than two years, (ref) but the treatment process can vary from place to place, having different environmental impacts.

Greige fabric (pronounced “grey” fabric) is the raw, unprocessed and unfinished woven fabric taken directly from a loom. Greige goods are the direct product of weaving when the fabric is still in its natural state and has yet to be bleached, dyed, coated or otherwise finished.

The above material as compassed in the 3d exploded axonometric, portray the most significant presence & function in the existing sailing club building.

PERSPECTIVE STONE MASONRY The exiting building features thick stone masonry walls stacked above each other and is polished to finished on its exterior finish.

Stonemasonry is one of the earliest trades in civilization's history. During the time of the Neolithic Revolution and domestication of animals, people learned how to use fire to create quicklime, plasters, and mortars. They used these to fashion homes for themselves with mud, straw, or stone, and masonry was born.

Castle building was an entire industry for the medieval stonemasons. When the Western Roman Empire fell, building in dressed stone decreased in much of Western Europe, and there was a resulting increase in timberbased construction.

Stonework experienced a resurgence in the 9th and 10th centuries in Europe, and by the 12th-century religious fervour resulted in the construction of thousands of impressive churches and cathedrals in stone across Western Europe.

STEP GABLES

SLATE ROOFS

The step gables on the roof of the sailing club features traditions dating back to as early as the 12th century.

The oldest example can be seen in Ghent (Flanders, Belgium). The house called Spijker on Graslei, and some other Romanesque building in Belgium.

Slate is particularly suitable as a roofing material as it has an extremely low water absorption index of less than 0.4%, making the material resistant to frost damage. Natural slate, which requires only minimal processing, has an embodied energy that compares favorably with other roofing materials. Natural slate is used by building professionals as a result of its beauty and durability. Slate is incredibly durable and can last several hundred years, often with little or no maintenance. Natural slate is also fire resistant and energy efficient.

Convenient access to the roof ridge motivated the crow-step design, along with the availability of squarish stones to accomplish this form of construction. The access would have been convenient for chimney sweeps and roofers in earlier times, where cranes were non-existent and tall ladders were not common.

they were spread in the whole of Northern Europe as from the 13th century, in particular in cities of the Hanseatic League (with brick Gothic style), then in Central Europe at the next century. These gables are numerous in Belgium, Netherlands, all Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Baltic States, Switzerland, and some parts of France (French Flanders, Eastern Normandy, Picardy and Alsace). They are also present but much rarer in the British Isles. Crow-stepped gables are especially common on traditional Flemish and Dutch houses and Danish medieval churches.

Slate roof tiles are usually fixed (fastened) either with nails, or with hooks as is common with Spanish slate.

In the UK, fixing is typically with double nails onto timber battens (England and Wales). or nailed directly onto timber sarking boards (Scotland and Northern Ireland).[citation needed] Nails were traditionally of copper, although there are modern alloy and stainless steel alternatives. Both these methods, if used properly, provide a long-lasting weathertight roof with a lifespan of around 60–125 years.

HISTORY FOUNDERS Formed in 1957, the St Andrews Sailing Club aims to promote and encourage small boat sailing and racing and the social interaction of club members, and to maintain its clubhouse, boatyard and boats for these purposes. Based in the old lifeboat shed on the East Sands, the club provides a full adult and youth training programme together with family sailing and a comprehensive racing programme. The club regularly participates in the national RYA “Push the Boat Out” day designed to encourage wider access and attracts members of the public of all ages.

With assistance from the Community Trust, the club were able to replace a safety boat engine and refurbish their specialised tractor.

In order to function effectively as a thriving and growing community water sports club, certain capital equipment is necessary to support the core sailing activities, i.e. two reliable safety boats and a powerful tractor suitable for the unique St Andrews East Sands Beach marine environment.

Paul McCombie, St Andrews sailing Club said:

“We are a family friendly club and welcome all, be they beginners or competent sailors; juniors from 7 years old to any age. There are even members who started sailing with us at a quite ‘mature age’. Our aim is to get 10

PUBLIC & PRIVATE SPACES

Public space is commonly shared and created for open usage throughout the community, whereas private space is owned by individuals or corporations. The area is built for a range of various types of recreation and entertainment.

Private areas are the rooms that an individual controls. Bedrooms are generally the most important private space. These can be shared but an area within the bedroom can be designated an individual personal space.

Common areas such as highlighted in green are often accessed by club members on a daily basis.

While areas in red are only and semi accessed by ground staff or crew leaders. Due to hygiene practices or just private spaces.

Areas highlighted in yellow are arranged according to gender and on the basis of urgency. It is not to be fully occupied at all times.

BUILDING SERVICES

Building services, such as heating, air conditioning, power, lighting, water, fire protection, security and communication systems, bring a building to life, enabling businesses to function and allowing occupants to flourish.

Here are some of the services as displayed in the sailing house.

The sailing club has 11 conventional radiators (dimm. 600x1000) heating the building. Due to its exiting poor no none insulation, the building relies on these radiators to supply heating induction to its users.

The sailing club has 2 levels of kitchen, one is typically used by sailors on the first floor. While the other is used my Toasty Shack for retailing.

Mookata is a Thai barbeque steamboat which literally means 'pork' and 'skillet' in Thai. Usually, pork lard is used to grease the metal skillet which is used to grill the meats.

The catch of this restaurant is that i opens from 6pm till 3am in the morning, so theres no need to head to the pub nor club. Beers and well as cocktails are to die for.

Korean barbeque is usually a celebration or a group venue., where people of ranging ages come a share a meal. The best part of Korean Barbeque is not the food, but the fellowship.

CONCEPT

Initial concept was derived for seagulls that were present at St. Andrews. The vibrant species travels in a pack and is equipped with an incredible gliding system that allows seagull to glide in mid air whilst maintaining spectacular speeds.

Seagulls use updrafts to increase altitude so they don't have to flap their wings as much to conserve energy. But if they need to make quick maneuvers, like diving to catch fish, they can change the shape of the wing for that particular purpose.

Evidence of initial concept that was then adapted to the roof extension of the sailing club.

The structure is describe to hold the weight of the roof through spruce timber columns

PROPOSITION

Drafting into plan was the hardest part of the process. Challenges such as fire requirements and isolations generating a thermal envelope were issues that took the design a step forward and two steps back.

Details as well as Mechanical Ventilations (HVAC) were carefully thought creating more design considerations to overcome during such intensive planning.

Tutors as well as peers shared same experience throughout the process each component and arrangement are meticulously measured to scale.

You can visualize things that are extremely tiny, happened millions of years ago, or that otherwise can't be viewed directly.

Constructing this physical model helped me understand spaces between spatial relationship at a clearer perspective. Allowed me to visually extract and identify underlying issues relating to the construction of the building,

Massing models allow me to quickly determine the viability of an idea. As the model becomes more detailed, I was able to understand the structural components better over the design and the challenges an idea may present. This type of experimentation is crucial to a successful project.

The sectional structure model enabled me collect data at a single point in time, cross-sectional studies are ideal to identify how components and spaces relates to the corresponding spaces. It allowed me to work easily to scale and proportion.

Tutors as well as peers shared same experience throughout the process describing the essential of massing models before determining the outcome of the building.

Details are carefully thought through spaces, creating more design considerations to overcome before and ideation of planning and determining if its functionable.

ANALYSIS Data collection is vital as it helps its user understand if the project is worth proceeding. It determines significant changes brought through the planners mind, governing if theres actually any physical changes as to the existing building.

The Sustainable Outcomes helps regulate the concurrent improvements that were imposed to the new finished building. such as diagrammatic finishes as shown in the folowing.
