02 Cubes and Cylinders

Most of the first semester and starting on the first day is the cube and cylinders projects. Throughout the semester we were challenged with making a 4x4 cube and cylinder with multiple materials. We also had to complete architectural drawings of our models. Showing the plan, elevation, and an axonometric. Challenged every week for a while with trying to perfect the perfect 4x4 cube of the material this week. We utilized drawing techniques and learned basic principals of design.

1 Site Specific Intervention

This project helped the studio immediately get into working together to complete a design task. To get us used to presenting in front of a crowd we had a team for this one. It was to get us to understand what this class is going to be like and if were made for it. We were not supposed to create any structures yet but we started with a doghouse. We thought it added to the campus in a great way during the hot summer days with a water bowl contraption. The design of the water bowl house added to the area.

2 Topological Transformations

Taking an everyday object or a shoe for most, we performed a study of space and analyzed objects using drafting techniques to display our knowledge of space. Spending most time utilizing our skills with an X-ACTO knife with cardboard to make a replicated model of dimension through stacking pieces of the cut cardboard. Using drawing techniques to draw perspective of the shoe with section cut drawings and elevations.

3 Creating Pattern Color Texture

The objective of this assignment was to analyze patterns and create our own textures. Using color to capture its own design element. We used drawing techniques to finish a uniquely designed color wheel, then a plaid design of our choice. Then using our created design stamp we created a color design. Using origami we defined depth perception with color and pattern. I utilized a theme with my pattern using color pattern and texture.

4 Visual Hierarchy

The visual hierarchy project helped us build on our knowledge of understanding the space to create a 3-D model out of a 2-D textile. We continued to practice drawing and using techniques to draw our diagrams. Drawing everything to explain the design process in the best way possible. My textile used multiple patterns throughout the pattern to create the unique 3-D allusion with my pattern. Utilizing study models to help us understand how to complete our final model. Gathering more and more information about the project we expressed our understanding of our project through our drawings.

5 Bend Cut Fold

Bending, cutting, and folding was the aspect of this project. Using my chosen piece of art from the Philadelphia Art Museum we created drawings to find the flow of the design. Using paper we were able to capture the flow of the artwork. Utilizing two wave designs I captured the flow of the waves the art captures. This project made us expand our knowledge on grasping the concept of analyzing.

6 Making Place/Space

The final project to close out our journey through the basic principals of design this project made us showcase our unique design ability. Using our artwork and border leaf model from project 5 we were able to expand to show qualities of our city. There were many obstacles to cross as a designer to create an 18x18 space for humans. Throughout the semester we were all challenged using small techniques that are meaningful to the basic principals of design.
