Central Square Memorial for Peace & Justice Dialogue Center The purpose of this project is to create a place for reflection and awareness of racial injustice in America. The site of the project is the central courtyard of The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. In an effort to not interfere with the design intent of the original architect, conditioned spaces must be placed below ground level and can not extend beyond the boundaries of the courtyard with the exception of egress tunnels. The design is centered around A central grove and “volume of hope” placed directly below, representing life, hope, and tranquility. We chose to make this a grove of Japanese Maple Trees to reflect those three characteristics as they do in Japanese culture. The placement of the trees in the center of the courtyard refers to African American lynchings which were held in public squares as spectator events.
