Central Square Memorial for Peace & Justice Dialogue Center The purpose of this project is to create a place for reflection and awareness of racial injustice in America. The site of the project is the central courtyard of The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. In an effort to not interfere with the design intent of the original architect, conditioned spaces must be placed below ground level and can not extend beyond the boundaries of the courtyard with the exception of egress tunnels. The design is centered around A central grove and “volume of hope” placed directly below, representing life, hope, and tranquility. We chose to make this a grove of Japanese Maple Trees to reflect those three characteristics as they do in Japanese culture. The placement of the trees in the center of the courtyard refers to African American lynchings which were held in public squares as spectator events.

The circulation of the existing memorial is a clockwise ramping procession that passes underneath a field of hanging monuments. The procession ends at the lower memorial entrance, which allows visitors to go outside or enter the courtyard. We decided to continue the clockwise, spiraling circulation to create a continous journey of reflection and education. In our design, a series of ramps guide visitors around a central enclosed volume which is placed underneath a grove of trees at the courtyard level. To create a meaningful journey through the building, the various programmatic elements are placed on or adjacent to the ramps. For ADA Accessibility, there is an elevator that can access all the levels. The ramps in the building are also wheelchair-friendly.

Houston Exploration Center Public Library Project The HEC is envisioned as a library with multiple goals, ones that rebrand traditional functions of a library and hybridizes them with those of a community outreach center. The goal is to allow for the creation of a learning facility where knowledge, and its acquisition, is the primary product. That product may be conveyed in the conventional transmission of knowledge through reading or in the communicating of events, both historical and contemporary, by means of presentations and outreach efforts led by local organizations.

The site for the Houston Public Library Project is located on a plot of land bounded by Jackson Hill Street to the West, Memorial Drive to the South, and the Memorial Drive/Waugh Drive Interchange to the East. Memorial Drive is a busy arterial road that connects Downtown Houston to areas Such as Memorial Park & Uptown Houston. Jackson Hill Street is a much quieter neighborhood street that connects Memorial Drive to Washington Avenue to the north. Just across from Memorial Drive is Buffalo Bayou Park, a large urban park alongside the banks of Buffalo Bayou, an important historical waterway for the city of Houston. The Bayou does occasionally flood in this area during heavy rain events. This park has many different trails, nature areas, and pavilions scattered across the banks of the bayou. There is an old pedestrian bridge across Memorial drive that connects the site to Buffalo Bayou Park. There is also another bridge on that same trail that takes pedestrians across the bayou to Allen parkway. The area’s topography is very unique compared to the rest of the Houston Metropolitan Area. The Slopes created by the gradual erosion of Buffalo Bayou create a hilly topography in the area offering views into the park and unobstructed views to downtown. The area along buffalo bayou is developing with new mixed use developments being planned for various sites along the corridor.

The site design centers the library as a community node with elements of the site tying into the Rice Military/Washington Corridor neigborhood & Buffalo Bayou Park. The existing pedestrian bridge and path will be rebuilt to allow for more space and to tie into the future bike lanes proposed for Jackson Hill Street. Due to steep slope caused by the ground behind the bridge, a small outdoor ampitheater was incorporated to prevent soil erosion onto a new community promenade as well as providing additional outdoor space for library programs. The existing B-Cycle station would be rebuilt into the intersection of the bridge path and the new promenade. As part of the project requirements, this community promenade will be incorporated as an extension of Scotland Street for pedestrian use. It will be closed off to vehicular traffic, but it will be wide enough to accommodate food trucks and deliveries. An additional offshoot promenade will be added that would allow a pedestrian connection to the parking lot on the Northeast side of the site as well as future mixed-use developments along Waugh Drive. The main entrance of the library will be located at the intersection of the two promenades. The cafe will be seperate from the library on the Northwest corner of the promenade intersection so that it can operate seperate from library hours. The parking lot can be accessed by the Waugh/Memorial westbound ramp or by Jackson Hill Street via an extended driveway from the DX Holdings parking lot. The Northwest corner of the site will remain as a forested area. The space between the parking lot and the main promenade will be turned into a amenity retention pond as the topography causes water to flow into an existing drain at that spot as it is lowest point on the site.

The central atrium and public spaces around it act as a community core, linking the various levels of the H.E.C. with the outdoor promenades that branch out into the community. These spaces can accommodate civic-based organizations such as educational and civic groups, galleries and volunteer organizations that can reserve locations for pop-up exhibits and events to promote various activities and causes. Within the atrium, there is a vast system of intertwining, branching stairs connecting the various floors of the H.E.C. to promote interaction between visitors.

Eroded The Link at Galveston This proposed project would act as a “link” between the hotel & restaurant development along the harbor, and retail along the historic Galveston Strand. Currently the site is a parking lot between Harborside drive & Pier 21, but the city hopes to redevelop it in the future. The project would include an outdoor market & a music venue with an attached restaurant. After visiting the site and doing research on Galveston, the process of erosion stood out to me as it affects Galveston on many scales. From the rough eroded facades of historic buildings to the formation of the island itself, erosion plays a major role in Galveston. The concept of Erosion was incorporated into this design with a thick exterior brick facade that can erode down over a long period of time, revealing newer, inner layers. The interior of the building would consist of a large, smooth cavernous space, with large skylights located at the ends of the building.

South View The form of the building is derived from the pedestrian activity patterns of the site, in which areas of high pedestrian activity would slowly erode away the edges of the site to reveal a smooth, organic form. Much of the pedestrian activity happens on the Northwest side of the site due to being directly adjacent to Pier 21. The open space on that corner of the site will be reserved for the outdoor market. The building’s structure will consist of large arching trusses. There will be two light concrete shells that will be held up by the trusses; an outer shell that will rest on top of the trusses, and an inner shell that will be suspended from them. The outer shell will be concealed as it will hold up the exterior brick layers, while the smooth inner shell will remain exposed .
