The future of water sports
Adrian Geislinger explains how his passion for foiling has led to him to creating his own successful brand of hydrofoils.
by João Freire
Levitaz was founded in Salzburg in 2015 as a brand of the Geislinger GmbH and it is currently in the forefront of the new trend - hydro foiling.
It began as a partnership between Mario Legenstein - an external designer, who already built foils in his garage for several years - and the Geislinger company represented by the brothers Adrian and Benjamin Geislinger.
Adrian stated:“I was competing for several years in the Kiterace World Tour when I was getting hooked on foiling.
“Pretty early in that process we decided to build Foils in my family’s company.
“With more than 25 years’ experience in developing fibre composite couplings and shafts, and with extensive experience in carbonfibre technology, Geislinger GmbH was a perfect hub for developing Levitaz Hydrofoils.
“I brought a lot of market and customer know-how to the table, so we had the perfect setup to start new a venture.
“After a successful prototyping phase, we finally decided to establish a brand and start selling.
Levitaz was born”
Levitaz’s mission is to help anyone “experience high performance with Levitaz and find out how a passion for innovation and our technical know-how in the foil industry combine to produce superior
equipment – designed to enable riders to improve their performance in any condition.”
Hydrofoils are known to be the future of water sports. But who does it work exactly?
A hydrofoil consists of a long and hydrodynamically designed fin with underwater wings – similar to airplane wings - that attaches underneath a boat or a board.
As the speed increases, hydrofoils can produce the power that equals the weight of the boat or board which lifts it out of the water.
This way, it decreases friction and allows for a bigger speed.
Hydrofoils can be used in any water sport such as surf, kitesurf, windsurf and wakeboarding.
This insane feeling of a levitation like state that feels like flying over the water
Levitaz manufactures boards and gear all around the globe providing the best possible experience to all their riders.
Levitaz produces foils, boards and other accessories for all kinds of water sports, whether you are a surfer, a windsurfer, a kite surfer or you love wakeboarding.
If you are looking to try it out for yourself, make sure to go to Levitaz website to see what is right for you
CRUIZER PRO

“
Here is why you should try foiling
by João Freire
Hydrofoils are revolutionizing water sports as we know them! The feeling of flying above the water as if you are flying it is what makes it so appealing and fun to most people and it is no wonder that it is increasingly becoming more popular between water sports enthusiasts.
Adrian stated: “It is very addictive. Moreover, it doubles your time on the water.
“It is way more efficient! You need less wind to get going for kites and for surfing smaller waves.
“It makes marginal conditions to great conditions.”
“It opens up a whole new world for water sports.”
That’s right! Hydrofoils have a lot of benefits and even make it possible for riders to cruise just with the weight of their body by pushing up and down generating enough momentum to move without the force of waves or the wind. This is called pumping! However, foiling is usually very difficult for beginners.
Adrian explained: “I would only recommend it to experienced riders and never to a total beginner.
“A proper introduction to the sport is important, also in regard to safety.
“But with the right equipment, an experienced trainer and under the right conditions it can be learned super easy.
First flying experiences are already possible in the first session.”
More often than not, we do not have the privilege to surf proper waves every day.
Sometimes, the sea can simply be flat with no wind whatsoever for days on end.
But the beauty of foil surfing is that you do not need huge waves or strong winds to enjoy it!
“
It opens up a whole new world for water sports
All you need is a small push from a wave and let the foil do the rest of the work for you. It's that simple!
Another good reason to try foiling is the smoothness.
Foil safety
As foiling becomes more popular amongst water sports enthusiasts, the bigger is the need for some sort of guideline to make sure everyone remains safe.
Foiling can cause serious injury, not only to the person riding but also to everyone else that is in the water with you.
The foil community fears that restrictions and regulations might be put in place to limit and even prohibit foiling if too many dangerous incidents start occurring.
Respecting surf etiquette goes a long way to help everyone stay safe and have fun.
All surfers need to be respectful, courteous and always aware of other people around them.
It is extremely crucial for everyone, whether they are a surfer, a windsurfer or a kite surfer to always make sure that they are familiar with their equipment and wearing the correct gear.
You should always make sure you have the right type of wings on, and always put a leash on.
It is not uncommon for the foil to keep going forward after you fall off.
Another aspect you should take into consideration is the sea. You should be familiar with the area you are foiling in.
Take some time to study the wind, the currents, the waves and even other foilers in the line-up.
Even if, you are an experienced foiler, if you go to a brand new spot, you should always go with someone who is familiar with that spot.
That person will tell you things to watch out for and give you the knowledge of that new environment, for instance, how shallow the water may be, where are the hidden rocks, how high or low the tide is, or in what direction are the waves going.
Adrian explained: “In surfing more than in the wind related water sport of foiling, it is very important to also choose the right spot.
“I would never ride in a crowded line-up. Just because you can easily hurt other surfers by hitting them in the water.
“The beauty of the foil is that you don’t need the best break to have the best ride.
Yes, unlike a normal board, a foil board can almost literally fly above the water, cancelling the rough water of the choppy sea.
Therefore, you can have a smooth sailing above any bumps, any chops or any noise whatsoever. Adrian explains how he fell in love with foiling: “I remember the first Hydrofoil I ever saw was in a sailing magazine.
“It was a Moth Class boat. It looked unreal to me, like if he was flying over water.
“Sometime later I had my first session on a so-called Kite foil.
“A hydrofoil specifically designed for kitesurfing.
“I can still clearly recall the moment when I first got lifted into the air.
“Everything went silent and I wasn’t able to hear the water noise of my board anymore.
“An insane feeling that feels like flying and is highly addictive.
“From that moment on I knew that this is what I want to ride for the rest of my life.”
Adrien added: “The Hydrofoil in the water can be dangerous to you and others.
“I have seen accidents that could have easily been avoided by wearing the proper protection.
“You can always go to a less crowded peak and will still have the longest rides of your life.”
The best places to learn foiling is in secluded places with almost no one there so you won’t have to worry about hitting other surfers and just have a blast.
“I definitely recommend wearing a helmet and impact vest.”
Beginners should never try it out by themselves, especially when the line-up is crowded, and should always have the help of an instructor or even someone that is familiar with the sport.
The most important rule of all is to respect the ocean. Protect the ocean as if it was sacred because it really is and protect the environment. Always be mindful, not to litter the sea or the beach.
Always be safe and enjoy!

Lucas Schwirschke talks about his passion for his work
by João Freire
Lucas Schwirschke was born in Cascais, Portugal of German and Brazilian descent.
Lucas' style of photography is mainly inspired by urban and musical from São Paulo, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro and the UK. He started establishing his career as a professional photographer in 2018.
Lucas said “I started just by simply photographing some of my friends since I was around 14 or 15.
“We used to hop on a train to Lisbon every other week and I got to use my friend’s cameras and equipment.
“I got really into photography really quickly, so eventually I bought my first camera and created an Instagram account just to post all of our photography sessions.
“It wasn’t long until I started getting quite a following on social media, and eventually I realized that I could make this a career.”
“
As a photographer, I have to keep trying new and crazy ideas in order to grow
Lucas was always heavily inspired by music and in 2018 he started working with big names of the “Hip Hop Tuga” scene.
Lucas stated “I always want to branch out and take on different projects other than photoshoots of my friends.
Lucas was hired to work in nightclubs to photograph where he met the young and up-and-coming DJ Perez.
“Working in nightclubs was completely challenging but it is a tough and competitive industry and I couldn’t let an opportunity like this go to waste if I wanted to make a name for myself.”
This opportunity allowed Lucas to get closer to the music industry and after DJ Perez found out about his work, he personally invited Lucas to come photograph him on other gigs he had around Lisbon and to take personal photoshoots of him.
Lucas went to most summer festival in Portugal he could since 2016 to get the opportunity to get some good shots and grow his brand’s name online.
He stated “By then, I was photographing at any chance I could.
“Anytime I would travel somewhere or just went to the beach or something like that, I would always bring a camera with me wherever I went.
“
It really is what I love doing and I never see it as being just a job
“Basically, I was just enjoying myself, having fun with my friends and creating long lasting memories.
“KAPPA JOTTA was playing at NOS Alive at one of the stages where me and my friends happened to be at. KAPPA JOTTA is one of most prominent and famous artists in Portugal, famous for his deep and unmistakable voice.
“I shoot some pictures of him performing on stages, edited them and then posted it on my social media days after.
“He immediately direct messaged me on Instagram that he really liked the pictures I took of him and invited me to go on tour with him.
“This was a big game changer for me and allowed me to work closely
with other big names such as Domi and Rony Fuego.”
Nowadays, he is an established professional photographer, with his own brand, SKREAM Digital MindstylZ, and works with multiple golden and platinum artists.
“The name SKREAM actually comes from a DJ I used to listen to with some of my friends back when I was about 14 or 15.
GoodFellasGoodMusic
“Me and Perez became good friends after working together.
“I got backstage passes to a lot of his shows, met other big artists and more experienced photographers which thought me a lot about photographing shows.”
“SKREAM was my favourite dubstep DJ at the time, and my inspiration to create some music with my frinds and then I made it the name of my brand.
He currently works with the Nexus Project on institutional and other works and also with the producer BDG Records and on his personal project DMZ (Digital MindstylZ) that involves directing photography in video clips, among other projects.
Lucas is always looking to venture further and expanding his horizons to tackle new project ideas. His main focus is the DMZ project, but he still does normal photoshoots of people, friends, marriages.
He has also partnered with Audi and planned multiple photoshoots with Audi’s in studios and around the country.
Lucas finished off by saying “It is a tough and competitive industry and unfortunately not everyone makes it as a photographer because it is really costly and hard to monetise your work.
“The most important thing in order to make it in this industry is consistency and resilience.

Top photography tips for beginners
Lucas Schwirschke shares some pro tips he uses to take the best photographs
by João Freire
In order to become a great photographer, it is crucial to get a basic understanding and have a core knowledge of what photography is all about.
Once you have a solid foundation of what it is, then you can build on top of it and really dig in on the complexities of it.
These are some of the tips Lucas uses whenever he photographs.
First thing you need to learn more about is ISO. ISO is the sensitivity of your camera’s sensor.
The higher the number, the more sensitive to light your camera sensor is going to be.
Lucas Schwirschke
I should keep your ISO as low as possible, because the higher the ISO, the more grain, noise, artefacts and weird things are in your image.
I you are taking photos outside, where there is plenty of light, you should keep your ISO at 100, if you move on to the shade, you should change it to 200.
If you go back inside, you should bump it up to 400, 800 or even 1600 and so on.
The second thing you should learn about is the aperture.
Aperture is the size of the opening in your lens and can actually see the blades inside that open and close to create a smaller or larger hole.
The smaller the number of f/stops, the bigger the Aperture which means more light comes in.
The size of the Aperture can vary depending on the lens you use on your camera.
Aperture controls depth of field
Depth of field is, to put it simply, how much is in focus in front and behind the spot you are focused on. The lower the f/stop number, the lower the depth of field and vice versa. If you want to shoot a portrait for someone then you should really lower the depth of field in your camera to around f/2 or f/2.5.
However, if you want a shot of a wide landscape, with the tree in front and the mountain in the back all in focus then you need to crank the depth of field up to f/16 or f/32
The last thing you need to learn about is shutter speed.
Shutter speed is the amount of time, measured in seconds, that the shutter is open.
With shutter speed you will see numbers like 1/50 of a second up to 1/8000 of a second, depending on your camera.
You can also slow your shutter speed down to 1 second, down to 30 seconds in most cameras.
While shutter speed controls the amount of time your shutters open, it also controls motion blur, ranging from a lot of motion blur to all the way up to where moving objects are
just totally frozen in place.
Slower shutter speeds are going to be used when you are using a tripod shooting something such as a landscape with a cool waterfall and you want to get a picture of the water falling down with the vapor flowing around it or shooting 3-minute exposures in order to get beautiful Milky Way shoots.
When you want a freeze motion, shutter speed is what helps you accomplish that.
Faster shutter speeds are used to shot objects moving at high-speeds, for example in sports, or races, or even of your dog running in the backyard and you want that really crispy and sharp shot.
When shooting portraits, you do not want any motion blur on your images, so your shutter speed should be between 1/250 of a second and 1/500 of a second.
If the subjects are running or moving, then you should bring your shutter speed up to 1/800 of a second to get the best shot possible.
For sports you might want to go even further and take it up to 1/1000 or even more.

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury could get cancelled
This could potentially be the biggest upset to most UK boxing fans as we see the long awaited match between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury get postponed.
by João Freire
The boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is one of, if not the most, anticipated bout in the history of the sport.
After a dominant performance by the Gipsy King over the undefeated American boxer, Deontay Wilder on February, 22nd of 2020 and a lot of back and forth between the two fellow countryman over the pandemic, everyone expected to see a fight to go down this year.
The negotiations have dragged on for a long time, with Fury just recently revealing that he had talked with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and was happy that the financials were in place for an August 14 fight with AJ.
All the while, the former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, has had an arbitrator, Daniel Weinstein, rule in his favour today, with the verdict declaring that a third bout between Tyson Fury and Wilder must take place by September of this year.
If Fury refuses to take this fight against Wilder, the arbitrator's ruling may be upheld in court of law.
Before the pandemic hit and all matches were cancelled, Tyson had signed a 3-fight contract with Wilder with an expiry date on last October.
When Tyson's promoter Bob Arum learned of the ruling, he was shocked stating that it was a:
“
A preposterous decision
On an interview with Betway Insider, Arum said: " “It’s one thing to bring a claim and it’s a second thing to be successful. I believe that Wilder has no rights any longer for a third fight and therefore his claim will be denied.
"But I can’t stop them from thinking otherwise and taking it to litigation.
“The contract says Wilder’s rights ran out at the end of October and I really believe that contract displays clearly that Wilder does not have a claim for a third fight.
"Wilder had some surgery but that was taken care of in the contract, a 90-day delay from the date of the proposed rematch in July — and that has ran out.
"But I think we’ll have a resolution on December 12.
"If Joshua is beaten and is then unavailable, I’ll have a talk with Tyson as to whether he wants to pursue a fight with Wilder.”
Wilder vs Tyson
The Gipsy King did not seem too pleased about the arbitration decision to fight the Bronze Bomber by the end of the Summer of 2021. He took to social media to fire some shots at Wilder: “What a joke @bronzebomber has become,” Fury wrote in an Instagram story. “Asked for 20 million to move over #joker.
"Looks like I’ll have to crack his skull again!”
Fury and Wilder have met previously on the ring twice.
They were both undefeated boxers at the time and on December 1st, of 2018 they fought for the first time in the Staples centre arena, in Los Angeles, California.
The fight ended with a controversial split draw with the scorecards 115-110 for Wilder, 114112 for Fury and 113-113.
Even though Wilder dropped Fury a couple of times, the majority of boxing fans believe Fury outclassed Wilder the entire fight and deserved to win.
Their rematch was far more definitive, with Fury driving Wilder down numerous times inching closer to the battle being stopped in Wilder's corner.
Wilder then sacked his trainer, Mark Breland, for what he later claimed was Breland's part in a plot to strip him of his WBC heavyweight title.
The Bronze Bomber did not hold back on his ludicrous claims that the fight was somehow rigged in favour of Fury.
Fury's performance was highly praised, with many saying that it is one of the best boxing comebacks in the history of boxing ever witnessed, and that the win cemented Fury as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
The Gipsy King said on the postfight press conference that:
“
If he couldn't beat me when I was only 50% of what I am today, then he never had a chance tonight
After the fight, Fury revealed he wanted to fight "dynamite puncher" again, after he recovers from his injuries but he, also, added: "Whoever is next, will get the same treatment, that's for sure."
Record 30-0-1
KO's 21
Age 32 Reach 216cm

TYSON FURY
'The Gypsy King'
Anthony Joshua 'AJ'
Anthony Joshua was considered to be the greatest heavyweight boxer of his generation with an untouched record of 22-0 and KOing anyone who faced him in the ring.
He was the golden boy at the time and all of the UK boxing fans adored him.
That was until he met Andy Ruiz for the first time at the Madison Square Garden, New York, in 2019.
Record 24-1-0 KO's 22
Age 31 Reach 208cm
In this fight where the WBA, WBO, IBF and the IBO world heavyweight titles were at stake Ruiz managed to take Joshua down two times in the third round and another two times in the seventh round.
Ruiz, who actually came as a replacement for Jarrell Miller because he failed multiple drug tests, won by TKO over Joshua. This fight absolutely rocked the world of boxing who never expected Anthony Joshua's perfect record to be destroyed the way it did.
“
I want to get my revenge, I would love to get a win and get my titles back
Anthony Joshua stated at the post-fight press conference that: "It's an upset, isn't it?
"It's not expected, the booky said I was a favourite.
"One shot at the top of the dome, you know, kind of rattled me a bit and then I tried to stay in there a few more rounds but the better man won."
Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua went on to fight once again later that year in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. The rematch lasted all 12 th rounds and AJ came out on top with a victory over Ruiz.
Ruiz seemed very out of shape for this rematch and weighed in 40 pounds heavier than he did in the first fight.
Even though AJ was able to reclaim his belts, his legacy was tarnished following his first loss of his professional career.
The only way Joshua can be considered the best heavyweight boxer of his generations was to beat Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, both fighters with no losses in their career at the time.
As the pandemic started to affect our everyday lives, all boxing matches were cancelled and postponed but the trash talking never stopped.
Both Tyson and Joshua kept trash-talking each other over social media accusing one another of ducking this fight and being afraid.
Joshua was not happy to hear that his fight with Tyson Fury might not happen and he put out a statement on Twitter saying:
“
The world now sees you for the fraud you are
"You’ve let boxing down!
"You lied to the fans and led them on.
"Used my name for clout not a fight.
"Bring me any championship fighter who can handle their business correctly."
"You’ve let boxing down!
"You lied to the fans and led them on.
"Used my name for clout not a fight.
"Bring me any championship fighter who can handle their business correctly."
Now, Joshua will most likely face WBO mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk. But it does not mean he is willing to let Fury off the hook just yet.
The promoter, Eddie Hearn, reacted to the arbitration decision by saying: “We can’t wait around.
"We have a deal in place with Tyson Fury, “We provided an unbelievable opportunity to him.
"We were told by his team, Bob
Arum, that the arbitration wouldn’t be an issue, we could move forward with this fight.
"They were wrong, and that’s on them, that’s their responsibility, that’s now their problem.
"We hope they can solve that problem, but we have to look after ourselves, we have to look after Anthony Joshua, we have to maintain the position of unified world champion.
"Those talks will continue, and we want to be in a position by the end of this week - are we fighting Tyson Fury or are we moving forward with another option?"
Eddie added that there are other interesting fights for Joshua, such as a trilogy with the only man to ever beat him in the ring, Ruiz.
If none of these fights happen then Luis Ortiz and Dyllian Whyte are also potential fights for AJ.
“
I wouldn’t rule out any scenario at the moment for Anthony Joshua.
Hearn added: "He (Joshua) felt all along that they didn’t want the fight, I felt differently.
"I didn’t feel it about their team but I felt that Fury wanted the fight. "Maybe he didn’t."
If Ruiz, who defeated Joshua 2 years ago only to lose the belts back to the champ six months later, is picked as the next opponent for the Londoner, it would imply that both Joshua and Fury would be taking care of some trilogy business before, presumably, seeking to finally having the undisputed heavyweight title after that.
Since the fight between each Englishman is likely to not happen so soon, many fans fear that AJ and Fury will not be facing each other in the near future, and we will be lucky to see them in the ring together by the year 2022.
Both Fury and Joshua have not yet stepped inside the ring this year and the Gypsy King has not stepped a foot in the ring since the pandemic began.
Eddie Hearn is eager to see this fight going forward in order to unify all Boxing belts under one only belt.

‘Seaspiracy’: the truths, lies and exaggerations
Netflix documentary takes audiences on a journey in search of the causes of ocean life extinction, unveiling the dark truths about commercial fishing around the world.
by João Freire
Netflix’s new original documentary arrived with a huge bang. “Seaspiracy” premiered on March 24th and pointed the finger at the fishing industry, with accusations that sparked immediate controversy all around the world.
Even before the premiere, representatives of the various fishing industry associations were already preparing for the debate that would inevitably ignite.
Worrying statistics appeared among some of the disturbing facts and figures on the dangers of overfishing and unsustainable fishing and what it might mean for the planet’s future.
Some environmental organizations have been accused of ignoring and denying the polluting potential of plastics that come as a result of commercial fishing.
Other companies, such as the dolphin friendly label, which certify products as sustainable and guarantee the absence of by-catch fishing - that is, the killing of other marine life that are collateral victims - were portrayed as farces.
But does everything presented by the director Ali Tabrizi correspond to the actual truth?
Marine biologists and environmentalists who watched the documentary believe some of the things stated were dubious, but they stress that it raises important questions and concerns that need to be addressed, even if they can or cannot agree on everything.
It is definitely a documentary that is worth watching.
One of the criticisms is the way in which Tabrizi portrays the lack of action or intervention by environmental organizations on the subject of commercial fishing.
The documentary focuses on the countless campaigns and many
efforts made to try to reduce the use of plastic straws, while little or nothing is said about the need to regulate the fishing industry and its responsibility in the emission of polluting plastics in the ocean.
It is believed to be a little unfair because there is quite a lot of public debate over these matters these days.
However, because these are different issues, many of them are focused on plastic pollutions and others on commercial fishing.
It is impossible for a single environmental organization to focus on all the issues at once, and fishing is one of them.
This does not mean that some organizations are not trying to tackle this specific issue.
Ali Tabrizi
One of the most controversial moments of the documentary is raised after an interview with a person in charge of the Earth Island Institute and Dolphin Safe Tuna Mark J. Palmer, from the Earth Island Institute assured that no endangered species such as dolphins were harmed while fishing. However, in the same interview, Mark states that it is impossible to know if the fishing companies are actually killing other marine species as a result of by-catch.
More than a certification, control or ban on trawling problem, this is a fundamental issue that will only be resolved, as the documentary points out, with the decrease of fish consumption - although it underlines that the elimination of fish consumption, as advocated by Tabrizi, is pretty much impossible to achieve.
It would not be possible nor would it be socially accepted.
Most environmentalists believed that cutting out all meat or fish intake from our diets is unrealistic.
However, we should all be well aware that a vegetarian or vegan diet has a far lower impact on the planet we inhabit.
Only in this way will we be able to attain the long-awaited goal of sustainability, which will allow for the replenishment of marine life.
For the time being, solutions to conventional fishing’s most damaging impacts are being sought.
In addition to the impact of commercial fishing, plastic is another major threat to the oceans.
Tabrizi found that most organizations that promote the end of plastics and the protection of the oceans were more focused on publicizing the end of the use of chewing gum and other small objects but never mentioned the fishing industry and the pollution of plastics caused by equipment and nets left on the high seas.
One of these organizations mentioned on the documentary is the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In an interview, they denied that most plastic waste was from fishing.
However, they would end up pointing out that the best way to stop this pollution would be through the “elimination or reduction of fish consumption.
This documentary is a must-watch, even though some claims were controversial, to be aware of the consequences of the over consumption of fish and how we can change.
