The GE Chamber Foundation and Chamber of Commerce have been working closely with the Small Business Advocacy Council to amend outdated policies that make it hard to do business in Chicago. Here’s a few policies we’re working on today:
•
One of the most complicated barriers a prospective business owner must face is finding a commercial space properly zoned for the use of the business. Chicago and surrounding communities have overly complicated and outdated zoning requirements that must be adjusted for the new economy that exists today.
•
We have advocated for a County Ordinance limiting the number of times a commercial property owner can reduce their property taxes based on full or partial vacancy. Read it online here: bit.ly/vacancyact (Please note as of 11/26/22, this ordinance has not yet been filed). We have advocated for the Vacancy Fraud Act. That state legislation is here: bit.ly/stateLVFA
We have engaged with policymakers on the use of the Real Estate Under Assessed Valuation Complaint and how this can be a vehicle to reduce commercial vacancies in Chicago.
