TAKE A STROLL IN ENGLEWOOD FOR

AN
INNOVATIVE ENGAGEMENT OF ART AND BUSINESS

HISTORY

THE START

Originally known as Junction Grove, Englewood was founded in 1865, and was annexed to Chicago in 1889. By the 20th century it became the preferred community to live in and a popular destination—in fact, by 1920 the population soared and Englewood’s shopping district at 63rd and Halsted was the second busiest in the city.

ENGLEWOOD DEVELOPMENT TODAY

• There are 9 proposed new Englewood development projects approved by City council between March 2019 and April 2022

• 99 permits have been issued for new construction/ renovation projects throughout Greater Englewood

POLICY

• There are 700 City owned vacant lots in Greater Englewood; all planned for the City’s Land Sale in November 2022

• 1,263 City owned properties that are eligible for Transit Oriented Development incentive (TOD)

The GE Chamber Foundation and Chamber of Commerce have been working closely with the Small Business Advocacy Council to amend outdated policies that make it hard to do business in Chicago. Here’s a few policies we’re working on today:

ZONING REFORM

One of the most complicated barriers a prospective business owner must face is finding a commercial space properly zoned for the use of the business. Chicago and surrounding communities have overly complicated and outdated zoning requirements that must be adjusted for the new economy that exists today.

VACANCY FRAUD ACT

We have advocated for a County Ordinance limiting the number of times a commercial property owner can reduce their property taxes based on full or partial vacancy. Read it online here: bit.ly/vacancyact (Please note as of 11/26/22, this ordinance has not yet been filed). We have advocated for the Vacancy Fraud Act. That state legislation is here: bit.ly/stateLVFA

• ASSESSED VALUATION COMPLAINT

We have engaged with policymakers on the use of the Real Estate Under Assessed Valuation Complaint and how this can be a vehicle to reduce commercial vacancies in Chicago.
