The Public Humanities Awards are a highlight of our year at Illinois Humanities. It is a special day when we come together from across the state—and beyond!—to honor the ways in which the humanities are vital and vibrant in our state.

This year, perhaps more clearly than ever, we see through the work of our honorees the ways in which the humanities strengthen our state’s civic fabric. From Macomb, to East St. Louis, to Chicago, and every place in between, we are celebrating the people and organizations who wield the humanities every day to tell stories, build community, advance justice.

Today, May 19, 2022, we’ll take you on a tour of the great state of Illinois.

Most importantly, you’ll meet our community—your community—and see how, together, we make the public humanities happen every day in every corner of our state.

ABOUT ILLINOIS HUMANITIES Illinois Humanities, the Illinois affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a statewide nonprofit organization that activates the humanities through free public programs, grants, and educational opportunities that foster reflection, spark conversation, build community, and strengthen civic engagement. We provide free, high-quality humanities experiences throughout Illinois, particularly for communities of color, individuals living on low incomes, counties and towns in rural areas, small arts and cultural organizations, and communities highly impacted by mass incarceration. In 2020, Illinois Humanities organized 169 events that reached 6,373 participants across Illinois, reaching nearly every one of the 102 counties in the state. Due to the pandemic and the change to virtual platforms, we were able to reach viewers across the world. With additional support from the National Endowment for the Humanities CARES Act funds, Illinois Humanities conducted statewide crisis-relief grantmaking of more than $700,00 to 177 organizations in 2020.

ABOUT THE BEACON AWARD

Launched in 2020, the Beacon Award honors an individual or organization who has been a champion for— or investor in— the humanities in Illinois, elevating the work of humanists in ways that have improved the quality of the state for its residents.

THIS YEAR’S BEACON AWARDEE This year’s Beacon Award winner is ART FOR JUSTICE FUND, a national organization disrupting mass incarceration by funding artists and advocates working together to transform our criminal legal system.

Art for Justice was founded in 2017 by Agnes Gund to end mass incarceration in the United States and the racism that drives it. This six year catalytic fund ending in 2023 has already made close to $100 million in grants to over 200 artists, advocates, and organizations that are transforming the criminal legal system and creating a future of shared safety for all.

“We’re honored that Illinois Humanities is recognizing us with the Beacon Award,” said Helena Huang, Art for Justice Fund Project Director. “They’re an inspiring grantee partner and have shown great leadership through their Envisioning Justice Program which elevates the voices of those most impacted by the criminal legal system and shines a light on the urgent need to end mass incarceration. Illinois Humanities is shifting hearts and minds across the state via their efforts which builds empathy and makes policy change possible.”
