Chairman’s Message MAKING HISTORY BY SAVING HISTORY It has been a pleasure to serve the Jewish Museum of Florida for the last 17 years. And it is an honor to have this opportunity to serve as your Chair. This position brings with it a sense of purpose. The mission of the Museum is to collect, preserve, and interpret the material evidence of the Florida Jewish experience. History helps us understand how the world is, and what it can be. Only by bearing witness to the lessons of our past, can we chart the way to a future of understanding, acceptance, equality and peace for all. This Museum is a window to the past, a mirror of the present, and a guide for the future. Through our work here and in partnership with FIU, we are passing down these lessons from generation to generation. I am calling on all of us to work together to raise and donate funding for this museum – for now and for the future – so that our grandchildren will be able to bring their children to the Museum, learn from our history, and begin to write their own chapter. A wonderful opportunity for everyone to contribute to the Museum, in conjunction with JMOF’s 20th Anniversary, is our fabulous Gala Purim Ball in February 2015 (see page 3). Together, let’s make history by saving history!

Sincerely, Kenneth M. Bloom Chairman of the Board

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU enlisted the curatorial prowess of the pioneer gallerist Bernice Steinbaum for a fantastic selection of Florida Jewish art collectors featured in The Chosen: Selected Works from Florida Jewish Art Collectors. This groundbreaking exhibit showcases prominent works chosen from a cadre of preeminent Jewish art collectors. Twenty-two collectors with strong ties to South Florida have generously loaned pieces for this unprecedented exhibit, representing varied passions from their prized collections. Many are pioneers of the local art scene, instrumental in bringing Art Basel to Miami and foremost collectors of contemporary art, with such recognizable names as: Margulies, Robins, and Rubell, to list a few. JMOF-FIU’s mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the Jewish experience in Florida. The exhibits featured are usually on topics of Jewish history, traditions, art and culture. This is the first time JMOF-FIU is displaying world-renowned art from such internationally acclaimed artists including George Segal, Louise Nevelson, Alexander Calder, Nick Cave, Julian Opie and Hung Liu. Guest Curator Bernice Steinbaum used her creative and innovative talents in selecting the works for this show, noting, “We have never looked at what our community collects. We suspected there was not a connective tissue, other than our

From the Collection of the Brody/Brinberg Family

own Jewish DNA, but we found connectivity in the diversity of the works.” She goes on to say, “The Jewish people historically have been considered ‘other’ in each of the countries from which they have fled and they understand, in a visceral way, about inclusiveness.” The artists selected by Steinbaum are global: from Argentina, Brazil, China, Cuba, Germany, Haiti, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa and the U.S. Just as the Jewish people traditionally focus on the importance of remembering the past to pass down for future generations, art is also a vehicle for linking the past and looking towards the future. Each collection tells its own story about the collectors: why and how they started collecting, how they chose the pieces they have acquired, how their collections enhance their lives, as well as their depth, commitment, passion, vision and philosophy. This exhibition also gives some insight into these collectors’ own stories, to add a bit of history as a backdrop for the center stage of these dynamic contemporary pieces. Exhibition sponsors include Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Museo Vault, Biscayne Bank, Kenneth & Barbara Bloom and Elliot Stone & Bonnie Sockel-Stone. Museo F I N E

January is Florida Jewish History Month! Kick-off Celebration January 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In Conjunction with City of Miami Beach Centennial Celebration. CLIPPED TO CIRCLE & GROUPED FOR YOMTOV

In celebration of the 12th Annual Florida Jewish History Month and in conjunction with the City of Miami Beach Centennial, JMOF-FIU presents this afternoon honoring the Jewish Pioneers of Miami Beach. Join a panel discussion with Seth Bramson and Abe Lavender about the historic Jewish families of Miami Beach and the Museum’s former synagogue buildings. As part of this free public celebration enjoy a complimentary slice of key lime pie, Florida’s official state pie, provided by Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant. Jennie and Joe Weiss, the founders of Joe’s, were the first Jews to settle on Miami Beach in 1913 and the business continues to be run by the family today. Initiated by the museum, Florida Jewish History Month has been observed since 2003, when Gov. Jeb Bush signed a bill declaring the statewide observance. Florida is the first state in the nation to have a month dedicated to the tremendous contributions of Jews in its growth and, in 2006, the concept led to the creation of Jewish American Heritage Month that is now observed each May. Artist Romero Britto created the official logo for the Florida observance. The museum’s curriculum is approved by the

Sunday, February 8, 2:00 p.m. "God is a Man of War. The Lord is His Name." The re-discovery of warfare in contemporary orthodox Jewish culture Lecture by Stuart Cohen

For almost two millennia after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Jews abjured all association with matters military. Moreover, unlike other religions, Judaism allotted no place whatsoever to warfare in its theology. Ever since the dawn of the twentieth century, however, both situations have been revolutionized. Large numbers of Jews attained military experience. More significantly, much of recent rabbinic writing - especially (but not exclusively in Israel) – re-emphasizes Biblical depictions of the Almighty's role as a warrior. This lecture examines those developments and analyses their possible implications. $5 JMOF-FIU Members; $10 NonMembers; Free for Students with valid ID. Collections

Keys to the Collection offers an inside peek at JMOF-FIU’s vast collections From the Collections of the Jewish Museum of Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, founding executive director. As is the case for all museums, our limited amount of gallery space prevents us from showing visitors everything in our collection, which includes more than 100,000 artifacts, documents, photographs and ephemera. This series provides the opportunity for a “behind the scenes look” at items in our collection, giving our audience from all over the world a chance to learn about some of our museum’s treasures.

It’s important to remember that the museum would not have its extensive collection if it weren’t for so many of you who have graciously donated your family’s memorabilia to be preserved and available for future generations. To add items about the past and current Florida Jewish experience to the museum’s collection, please contact the registrar at 786-972-3167. Learn more about our latest Keys to the Collection

From those who gave the first gifts to open our doors in 1995 to those who contribute now, we thank you all for your continued support. Names of contributors of $5,000 and more are engraved on a stone commensurate to the size of the gift and placed on our Major Gifts Wall in the Museum lobby. The names that follow are as of 10/31/14. So What Is The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro. The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity. So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project. Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future. Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family in December 2012. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State. Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile in the MOSAIC. Join us!
