The Calumet Accountant September 2012 September is the ninth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of four months with a length of 30 days. September in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of March in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological autumn is 1 September. In the Southern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological spring is 1 September. September begins on the same day of the week as December every year, because there are 91 days separating September and December, which is a multiple of seven (the number of days in the week). No other month ends on the same day of the week as September in any year. In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh"; September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 46 BC, when the first month changed from Kalendas Martius (1 March) to Kalendas Januarius (1 January).[ It is the sixth month of the Astrological calendar, which begins end of March/Mars/Aries. September marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Message from Mark T. Camarena, President Dear Friends:

K

ickstarter.com was launched in 2009 and is one of the most successful crowdfunding internet sites.

Crowdfunding is the collective effort of individuals who network and resource via the internet to support other efforts. While Kickstarter was not the first crowding funding site, it has improved the model to include creative projects and funding goals. If the funding goal is not met, then the funding does not happen and Kickstarter.com does not receive a commission. Kickstarter also has created rules for a reward system for funding backers. The rewards vary based on the amount of the contribution and if a project is fully funded then the funding backer will receive a reward. I hope that by being a member of the Calumet Chapter of the IMA you feel rewarded. I believe that we have once again put together an excellent slate of chapter activities for the upcoming 2012-2013 year. Unlike Kickstarter we are not an all or nothing organization. You are welcome to pick and choose what works for you. If you don't find somehting that benefits you, please let us know what you would like to see. You can always e-mail me at markt4121@gmail.com. In an effort to kick start some growth in the Calumet Chapter I am going to ask if you would consider inviting friends and colleagues to join our chapter. Regular membership is $210 for a year with a membership registration fee of$15.00. The full year membership includes a subscription to IMA's flagship magazine Strategic Finance, as well as access to IMA's portfolio of more than 300 NASBA approved self study courses, FREE monthly webinars, access to IMA's exclusive online community Linkup IMA, the exclusive opportunity to earn the highly respected CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation, as well as discounts on many goods and services. Through September 15, 2012 by using code AQDM1271 for new members (have never been a member of IMA in the past) the one year membership will be reduced to a total of $190 without any additional registration fee. This is a limited time offer and it can be taken advantage of by clicking the JOIN IMA tab on the chapter website http://www.imacalumet.com. Please make sure to choose chapter affiliation Calumet 081 Hammond. We want all those in our chapter service area to take advantage of all we have to offer. Retrospective: Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

A Carnegie Mellon University alumnus, Pausch co-founded the Entertainment Technology Center and led researchers who created Alice, a revolutionary way to teach computer programming. He was widely respected in academic circles for a unique interdisciplinary approach, bringing together artists, dramatists and designers to break new ground by working in collaboration with computer scientists.

As a professor, he inspired countless students in the classroom. Outside the classroom, he gained public fame for delivering what would come to be known as "The Last Lecture." On Sept. 18, 2007, only a month after doctors told him that he had three-to-six months to live following a recurrence of pancreatic cancer, he presented a lecture called "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" to a packed auditorium at Carnegie Mellon. The moving and often humorous talk recounted his efforts to achieve such childhood dreams as becoming a professional football player, experiencing zero gravity and developing Disney World attractions. In the process, he shared his insights on finding the good in other people, working hard to overcome obstacles and living generously. You can view the lecture directly at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo or via the above hyperlink.
