The Calumet Accountant October 2012 In night when colors all to black are cast, Distinction lost, or gone down with the light; The eye a watch to inward senses placed, Not seeing, yet still having powers of sight, Gives vain alarums to the inward sense, Where fear stirred up with witty tyranny, Confounds all powers, and thorough self-offense, Doth forge and raise impossibility: Such as in thick depriving darknesses, Proper reflections of the error be, And images of self-confusednesses, Which hurt imaginations only see; And from this nothing seen, tells news of devils, Which but expressions be of inward evils.

Message from Mark T. Camarena, President Dear Friends: Greater Than is a sports drink that was launched in 2010. It is available in more than 1000 outlets including Jewel-Osco, Treasure Island, and Whole Foods. One of the main ingredients in Greater Than is coconut water. Ironically, the founders of Greater Than, Mark and Jon Sider from Highland Park IL, do not care for coconut water. Jon was quoted in a recent Crain’s article saying “Coconut water is yucky.” But they embraced the ingredient wholly, and with a mix of beet sugar, vegetable juice, and some other ingredients, they launched a product that is generating more than a million dollars in revenue. Greater Than reminds me of the Calumet Chapter. Just like Greater Than, the Calumet Chapter has a list of key ingredients that make it work. On Tuesday October 16, 2012 we will distribute the 2012-2013 roster book, which contains not only our Chapter event calendar, but a very key ingredient to our success: our sponsors. Without our sponsors the Calumet Chapter would not be able to affordable technical meetings. The roster book also lists all our members and their contact information. I believe that our members are the key ingredient to our Chapter’s success. I have talked to other chapter leaders who share the same concern about getting members attendance at chapter functions. The overwhelming response is that members who attend are also the same members who give you feedback on their likes and dislikes. For those of you that have not been able to get to a chapter event, please let me know what you would like to see in a chapter event. Please feel free to email me at markt4121@gmail.com. On Tuesday October 16, 2012 at Luby’s in Tinley Park, Dave Bensema, Senior Financial Planner at Harris Private Bank will be speaking on Financial Planning. We hope you will join us and if you can or can’t we would love to have your input on chapter planning. You are the recipe for the Calumet Chapter’s continued growth and success.

Retrospective: Origins of Halloween

Each year on October 31st people from all over celebrate Halloween. A favorite of children and those who like to tap into their “inner child”, Halloween is a day to dress up in costume, hand out candy (usually to children), and try to frighten each other and ourselves with spooky stories. Like many holidays that are celebrated today, Halloween did not start off being celebrated in this manner – its origins have a history that started many centuries ago. Over 2000 years ago, the ancient Celts, who lived in the area that is now Ireland, Great Britain, and Northern France, celebrated November 1st as their New Year. Since this time of the year was the beginning of winter and colder, darker days, it was more closely associated with death than any other time of the year. The Celts believed that it was at this time that the souls of the dead traveled into the other world. They also believed that during this time the dead were more likely to move among the living. To help the dead along their journey and keep the living from being affected by those of the dead who were evil, the Celts held a festival called Samhain. During this festival they would sacrifice animals, vegetables, and fruits to the dead, and light bonfires in honor of them. Also during the festival of Samhain, the Celts wore costumes of animal skins and heads, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the Celts were conquered by the Roman Empire, the influence of Christianity began to permeate the Celtic rituals and beliefs. Christian missionaries and higher Roman Catholic officials sought ways to change the festival to become more Christianoriented. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV proclaimed November 1st as “All Saints Day”, which was also known as “All Hallows” or “All Hallowmas”. From this came the name “Halloween”. The ancient traditions were deeply ingrained into the Celts, however, and were hard to completely obliterate. As a compromise, the Roman Catholic Church eventually created “All Souls Day”, to be celebrated on November 2nd, and deemed it a day to pray for and honor the dead. No matter how hard the church tried, however, many of the native Celts still celebrated that time in the way that they always had. The evening prior to “All Saints Day” or “All Souls Day” was still observed by many Celts by leaving gifts of food outside their doors to appease the spirits. Many people today do not realize that this is the tradition they are following when they give gifts of candy to the “ghosts and goblins” that come knocking on their doors on Halloween night. Of course, from the festival of Sanhaim comes the tradition of the Halloween party, where guests come dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes.
