I am an Environmental Design senior at Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. I plan to further my education at Arizona State University in order to obtain a Masters Degree in Architecture. As a student who admires architecture, I take every opportunity to explore new environments. I originally studied civil engineering, however, found my true passion once I came across architecture and design. Sustainability is the new way of design. I believe that creating an organic, aesthetic, and resilient community is design excellence. I also believe that through traveling, I will gather new experiences and understanding. Eventually, this will lead me to be a great architect.

why
Arizona has been recognized as one of the states that has experienced some of the largest decreases in the homeless population over the past few years. The unhomed residents suffer greatly from the lack of resources and opportunities to get their lives back on track. It has become a global issue that can be addressed at a local scale. Oftentimes, they live in unsanitary and unsafe conditions with high risk of exposure to viruses, infections, drugs, malnutrition, poor hygiene, and crime. They often sleep out in the public streets marking them unsafe and unpleasurable to see. These streets are also polluted with their belongings. This issue has stalled communities from prospering since it often drives investors and developers away.

in every 184 Arizonan is still homeless

how
By creating a home for unhomed and vulnerable residents, they would be sleeping at safe places with less risk of diseases, viruses, crime, and addiction. The system that the vulnerable residents are being put into while staying at the shelters is meant to give them the tools to have opportunities to get their lives back on track. The community can also benefit from a program to help the residents earn money and work experience. The plan is that the community will be self-sustained.
who
Everyone from unhomed residents, local residents, developers, the city of Tempe, and the environment as a whole benefit from this project. Primary, the unhomed residents benefit from this cause. The accessibility to resources will give them the help they need. The residents of Tempe also benefit from this project. The safety of the general public increases as the unhomed are more likely to be victims of crime. Residents will also benefit from the fact that there are less people sleeping on the streets who are prone to be aggressive. Developers may also begin to see opportunities in land which was previously polluted or marked unsafe. This project would also benefit the city of Tempe. With many concerns of sites where homeless reside, the city would benefit from cleaner and more
shelter
I propose a plan to create a rehabilitation center for the unhomed residents of Tempe, Arizona. By using prefabricated industrial shipping containers, the project will be economical, sustainable, and time effective. A community of old shipping containers remained to be a rehabilitation shelter for unhomed and vulnerable residents would serve as an opportunity for many people.

18 units

system
Residents are given the tools to establish themselves on professional terms. The nursery is a place where residents can grow and care for plants. The plant store is open to the public on a daily basis. This is where residents can showcase their plants and sell them to customers. The result is self sustained revenue system. Residents benefit from the hourly pay and the work experience.

VIEWS FROM APACHE 04

apache boulevard
The site most appropriate for the project is on the corner of South Smith Road and Apache Boulevard in Tempe, Arizona. New development is key for the community to thrive and prosper in an area that was previously marked unsafe by the amount of unhomed residents residing in the community.
Residents benefit from the proximity to public transportation services such as the light rail and bus stops. Being close to transportation will make resources more available for the residents of Square 01.

the process 06
the beginning
The design process to create Square 01 has been rewarding for the challenge it has set upon me. I began this project with an idea to create a better community. I developed the idea to what it is now by thinking of ways to create a truly effective system.
drawing
This drawing was an idea of mine in the initial phases of the project. The site includes 16 rooms, 2 roof gardens, a courtyard, and an multipurpose unit. I was able to develop an understanding of how the project was going to work.

smith rd
I was able to get a better idea of the functionality of the project by working with a three dimensional figure. The best part about creating a model is the ability to play with different ideas. That is how I learned that some things might function better than others. I used my desk light as an artificial sun to create shadows. I learned that the way that the project was going was great but it was not where I wanted it to be.

sketchup
Square 01 was improved significantly on SketchUp. I was able to restructure the design of the site. The shelter itself was combined into one structure rather than two. I also moved the nursery to the south side of the site which would be facing Apache Boulevard. This was done in order to give a sense of transparency to the public. The retail units were also stacked in order to open up the space in a rather narrow and small sized room.
