President’s Message ‘Tis the season! What a wonderful time of the year. I absolutely love the holidays. The baking, the decorating, celebrating with friends and family and I even enjoy the hustle and bustle of shopping for the perfect gift for each of my loved ones. There are many things that the holidays symbolize, but no matter your beliefs or how you celebrate, it is definitely the season of giving. There is the obvious giving of material gifts, evidenced by the crowds at the malls and the crazies that line up TWO WEEKS before black Friday sales begin. Most everyone enjoys receiving gifts. Little fingers tear through wrapping paper at warp speed and as adults we feel the same anticipation, yet we are more reserved and delicately open our packages. Yes, getting gifts is exciting, but the most meaningful and lasting gifts cannot be packaged with a bow. Instead, I find that the most rewarding treasure is when we give or receive a measure of true kindness. Someone helping you in a moment of need, receiving a handwritten note, kind words on a bad day…it’s that little, but perfect thing that comes when you need it most. Usually it costs nothing but TIME. The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, provides these priceless gifts not just during the holidays, but year round. Yes, we have given through grants and other monetary ways, but we also give with our hearts and our time. This is what I see our League volunteers doing every day. Whether it is you participating with “Little Hands, Big Difference,” volunteering to prepare meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House, tutoring at risk homeless children, getting involved with Edmarc, a children’s hospice, helping to organize events for the residents of Park Place, or simply attending League meetings, you are directly impacting your community with your heart and your time. I am inspired by the selfless gifts you so graciously offer as you share a very special part of yourself with others. If I could give a gift to each of you, it would be my sincere appreciation and admiration for all that you do. Regardless of your tenure or involvement in our League, I hope that you will take great pride in the “gifts” we give our community by touching countless lives and making Hampton Roads a better place to live. Best of the Season This month, we wanted to remind our readers of the reasons why they consider this time of year, the best of the season. In addition to sharing our community updates and cookbook recipes, we asked members to share their best memories from the League year to date. We asked them to draw upon their experiences from community hours, trainings, social gatherings, fundraisers and even GMMs and to share them with us. The response was overwhelming; not only by the sheer number of memories that were shared but by the richness and the heartfelt moments that our League members were able to appreciate and take part in because they are members of the Junior League of NorfolkVirginia Beach. We are excited to share these moments with you.
COMMUNITY Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia Helping those less fortunate seemed to be the mindset of those that volunteered to pack boxes full of food in support of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia in November. The overwhelming support of local citizens shows the depth of this especially during the holidays. Our four hour shift started off at 6:00pm and we worked endlessly until 10:00pm. Immediately when we got there we had to unload a small passenger bus that was completely full of food donations. Donations ranged from frozen turkeys and all the fixings, to baby food and paper products. Once the bus was emptied we continued to unload donations as local citizens drove through the drop off line with their donations. Most donations were a few bags of dry and canned goods but there were several vehicles that pulled through that were overflowing with groceries to be donated. Many vehicles that pulled through also made monetary donations to also assist the Foodbank. Tamara Vugrin shared, “At times throughout the evening it was difficult to hold back the tears as I thought of those people who do not have all of the comforts that my family and I share. We are fortunate to not worry about where our next meal is going to come from or where we will spend a cold night. But more importantly, we are very fortunate to be able to support others whether it is donating food, money, clothing or just our time. My bucket was undoubtedly filled that evening and my only hope this holiday season is that we all strive to fill the buckets of those around us that are less fortunate.�

Little Hands, Big Difference Teaching an old dog new tricks can be hard, so we decided to start early. Partnering with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, our second annual Little Hands, Big Difference event helped show our children that community service can make a huge impact on those that are in need. The kids started out playing bean bag toss, making crafts and bowling in Pembroke Mall while waiting for Santa to arrive. Shortly after St. Nick made his grand appearance, the children turned their focus to sorting the “kid-friendly” foods that JLNVB purchased and collected through donations. After they sorted the food, the children loaded the food bins onto carts and walked it over to the 16th Annual Mayflower Marathon, a 57-hour long food and fund drive that helps stock the Foodbank shelves for the winter. President-Elect Laura Bangor said, “The children loved it because they were cheered and high-fived as they brought the food and delivered it. They were so excited and I think that it really made an impact on them, especially when they saw all the food that was being collected. Our goal was for the children to have fun and to share with them the joys of philanthropy and helping others. We do a lot where we reach out to children in need, but we also wanted to reach out to teach our children the importance of helping others.” Over 70,000 people in Hampton Roads are struggling to find food on a daily basis. Of those, 1 in 4 is a child. The Foodbank feeds seniors who have to choose between paying for food or medication, children who may only get one meal a day or none at all, and working families who just can’t make ends meet. Knowing the League made an impact on these lives is why we do what we do and passing the gift of philanthropy on to our children can be our greatest gift to them this holiday season.

Junior Achievement The JLNVB supported Junior Achievement by teaching Business Ethics to high school students to help them develop ethical decision-making skills as they prepare to enter the workforce. League members taught seven different lessons during the four-hour program on Saturday, November 17. It was a very fulfilling day for members as we went through different scenarios with the students ranging from being stranded on an island to serving on the Board of Directors for a multi-national corporation. The students expressed why they would make certain decisions in a variety of situations and what process led them to their choices. League members were able to share personal experiences with ethical dilemmas they have faced in their personal and professional lives. We look forward to continuing to support these children as they develop the skills that will help them move into theworkforce with confidence.
ForKids In November, seven Junior League members volunteered to assist ForKids staff with assembling Thanksgiving gift baskets at the Good Mojo Thrift Store location in Norfolk. After learning about the ForKids mission, their various charity partners and the people they seek to help, members set out to sort incoming food donations and check previously-assembled baskets for completeness. Dozens of additional gift baskets were then put together and an inventory of remaining pantry items was created so ForKids could make an updated request for donations on their website. Members also set up racks of donated children’s coats and jackets for the upcoming Holiday Shop, and helped the Good Mojo staff organize current stock. The staff of ForKids recognized the Junior League of NorfolkVirginia Beach, Inc. for its contributions to their wonderful organization at the October GMM. A note from ForKids: “Hello! I just wanted to thank you and the Junior League for coming out last week and helping us in our Thanksgiving Shop and Good Mojo thrift store. I was sitting next to Phelecia and I had to take several shots before she had one she liked. I remember telling her the training would be over by the time she “approved” of her picture. It was a great JLNVB memory.” Stephanie Peebles » “The Provisional Challenge Course was a great experience, the Ropes Course took a long time but we really had to work as a team and it was a great way to get to know the other Provisionals.” Erikka Massie “After swinging over the ‘lava pit’ to escape from the ‘cave,’ our groups of girls sang the fastest version of ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’ you’ve ever heard while holding on to each other balanced on a small block of wood during the Provisional Ropes Course at the Triple R Ranch.” Cynthia McCormick » “When the League first announced the Food Tidings for the new moms, I thought what a wonderful way to support our new moms and their families. It has been a fun way for me to meet other League members but to also support other moms. Having had two little ones of my own I know that any gesture of support or kindness regardless of the size means so much. The little things like a delivered meal makes the day significantly less overwhelming, even as we become comfortable in our new “mommy” role. RECIPES Christmas Cake From the Junior League of Dayton Ohio’s Discover Dayton Cookbook
Christmas Cake INGREDIENTS • 2 cups white sugar • 1/2 pound butter • 6 egg yolks • 1 pound cake flour • 1/2 t. salt • 1 t. baking powder • 1/2 cup whiskey or brandy • 1 pound white raisins • 1 pound pecans, chopped • 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten • Whiskey or brandy DIRECTIONS: In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter; beat in egg yolks. Sift together flour, salt, and baking powder. Add dry ingredients alternately with 1/2 cup whiskey. Stir in raisins and nuts. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Turn into a well-greased and floured bundt or angel food cake pan. Bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for 2 hours; cool. Wrap cake in cheesecloth wet with additional whiskey or brandy. Wrap in foil, and store in can or cake tin with a tight-fitting lid. Store in refrigerator. The longer it ages, the better it is! YIELD: one 10-inch cake, 32 servings

On the Scene with the League About 20 members of the 2012-13 Provisional Class and three Board members were able to participate in the low elements Challenge Course at Triple-R-Ranch on Saturday, October 20. The low course elements are characterized by group participation, problem solving, and activities, which build group unity, cooperation, and communication while also challenging balance and physical coordination. The groups were presented with a series of challenges in which members must be decisive and collective in their efforts to accomplish the goal. The course effectively helped the group: • Develop abilities which contribute to decision making and leadership • Develop relationships of honesty and healthy communication • Focus on the importance of being a trustworthy, reliable individual We were thrilled to be able to make this a part of the Provisional year and look forward to continuing with the activity for years to come. Our Provisional Members of the Month: Amanda Lloyd and Michelle Putnam were chosen as the December Provisionals of the Month because they headed up the Provisional Tailgate on November 10, 2012. Amanda and Michelle planned the brunch menu and coordinated the signups for the event and were there bright and early Saturday morning assisting with setup of the spot. They stuck with the “Black Out” theme for the game and the tailgate site reflected that with the décor. They even planned plenty of activities for the kiddos that included chalk, coloring, bubbles and corn hole! Needless to say, everyone had a great time. Both Amanda and Michelle are placed on the Donor Relations Committee for the 2012-13 League year. Amanda hails from Suffolk, but currently resides in Norfolk with her husband Matt. She earned a BA from Longwood University in 2004 and MA from Old Dominion University in 2007. Her full time position is with the City of Norfolk and she is also an online adjunct instructor at Tidewater Community College and Strayer University. When Amanda isn’t busy, she enjoys traveling, learning, and teaching others about various cultures. In addition to the Junior League, during this holiday season she volunteers her time as the Bleacher Coordinator for the Grand Illumination Parade in downtown Norfolk. As Amanda says, ”If I’m not busy, I’m not happy”. Michelle is currently living in Virginia Beach with her husband, Tim, and two daughters. She works in Newport News as a nail technician.
Congratulations: The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. would like to share special congratulations to Jamie Stump for winning the Ms. Delmarva 2013 pageant. On Sunday, November 18, Jamie competed in the 20th Anniversary Miss Delmarva Pageant in Salisbury, Maryland and was crowned Ms. Delmarva 2013. The competition is open to residents of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia with age divisions for children to adults. Phases of competition included personal interview, community involvement and evening gown. Congratulations Jamie!

In Memoriam Marguerite Phelps Vail, a native of Norfolk, daughter of Gladys Bassford Phelps and Frank Baker Phelps, died on September 22, 2012 in a local hospital. Mrs. Vail was born on June 11, 1926, was a graduate of Maury High School and attended St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina. During her marriage and while raising her two children, she involved herself in many areas of community life. She was a member of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, the Garden Club of Norfolk and the Norfolk Society of Arts. She served on the Boards of the Historic Houses of Norfolk and the Women‘s Auxiliary Board of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd where she served on the Altar Guild. Mrs. Vail is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jack Harrell Vail and her daughters Marguerite Knox Vail and Elizabeth Ashby Vail. She is also survived by a sister Constance Phelps Morrisette, many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, Mrs. Vail had a full and rewarding life. She and her husband enjoyed time spent with their family and friends, their home and the many years spent on and near the water. Her love of travel took them to destinations throughout the world where they met many who became lifelong friends. Mrs. Vail left a positive impression on those she met with everyone remembering her warm smile, good nature, and thoughtfulness. She will also long be remembered for her determination and spirit. Josephine Branch Craige Ruffin Adamson, age 78, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012 in Chapel Hill, NC after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jerome E. Adamson, and their three children: Mary Adamson Galvez and her husband Nicholas J Galvez of Tampa, FL, William T Adamson and wife Kimberly S Adamson of Hillsborough, NC, and Josephine B C Adamson of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Nicholas Galvez, Eleanor Galvez, Delia Adamson, Cadence Adamson, Avery Evans, Josephine Evans, and Ruffin Evans. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Burton Craige Ruffin and William H Ruffin, Jr., as well as her parents Josephine Kluttz Ruffin and William H Ruffin. Jo was born and raised in Durham, NC, attending Durham Academy and graduating from Chatham Hall in Chatham, VA. She matriculated at Smith College in Northampton, MA where she enjoyed fencing, rowing crew, and learning ancient Greek. She contracted polio and left Smith to convalesce. She later entered UNC-CH in a wheelchair, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in English, serving as President of her sorority Chi Omega, and able to walk without assistance. After her marriage, Jo and Jerry settled in Norfolk, Virginia where Jerry practiced plastic surgery and hand surgery. She devoted herself to her family and her many community interests. She served as

President of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, the Garden Club of Norfolk (GCA), and the Norfolk-Tidewater chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Her membership in the Monday Club in Norfolk, and later the Canterbury Club in Durham, fueled her commitment to continued learning. She was an active volunteer for the Friends of the Norfolk Juvenile Court and was later a tutor for adult literacy in rural Avery County, North Carolina. Jo was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, most recently at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Durham NC. Despite disabilities from polio, Jo was a competitor in ladies’ tennis for many years at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. After Jerry’s retirement, they lived part-time in Boca Grande, FL for more than twenty years. They later moved to Linville, NC and Chapel Hill, NC. She continued until recently to delight in walks in the mountains and visits with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her honor to the memorial garden at the All Saints Episcopal Mission, P.O. Box 117, Linville, NC, 28646 or to the Thoracic Oncology clinic at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNC-CH, CB #7295, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 or to the charity of choice. Josephine Ruffin Adamson will be remembered always for her love, determination, grace, intelligence and sense of humor.
Sydney Overstreet Meredith died on November 4, 2012. Born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Lois McCloud and Robert Thurman Overstreet. She is predeceased by her loving husband Dr. Henry Clarkson Meredith Jr. She attended Granby High School and her beloved Sweet Briar College. After returning to Norfolk to work she met and soon thereafter married her husband “Lockey” Meredith. They were married for 51 wonderful years. She was a docent for the Norfolk Museum (now the Chrylser Museum); president of the Norfolk Junior League; and was head of the Altar Guide at the Church of the Good Shepherd for many years. She is survived by her 6 children: Sydney S. Meredith and husband Raymond Almond, Sarah M. Meredith, Dr. Elizabeth “Kitty” H. Meredith and husband Kenneth Morris, Jane T. Meredith and husband James Karman, H. Clarkson Meredith III and wife Denise Meredith, and Caroline M. Brown and husband Eugene Brown. There are also 12 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. The family would also like to especially thank her caretaker Dorothy Williams for her love and care of their mother for the past five years. They would also like to thank the staff at Harbor’s Edge Assisted Living who cared for her. Memorial donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Virginia Symphony, or a charity of choice.
