President’s Message Our League year has been abuzz with our Actives, Provisionals, and Sustainers, working hard to further the mission of the JLNVB, while balancing home, work, and personal life. You, our members, are the heart of this organization and the true legacy of the JLNVB in Hampton Roads. As you follow your passions, you embody and support our mission of Promoting Voluntarism, Developing the Potential of Women, and Improving Communities (PDI). Your work with the League is core to Promoting Voluntarism, the reliance on voluntary action to achieve an end. It is the gift of your time that enables the JLNVB to positively impact our community. Through your work, you have touched countless people in Hampton Roads. Developing the Potential of Women is both central to our mission and is what sets us apart from other organizations. Junior League trainings and experiences have helped shape many aspects of my professional and volunteer life, and I hope to ensure the same for others. “Leadership Empowered,” the theme for this year, is about empowering you to act for impact by providing the tools needed to succeed through formal and on-the-job training. Through the Leadership Institute, Passion Into Action, Sustainer’s Passion, AJLI trainings, and placements, the JLNVB fosters a leadership culture that creates and promotes great leaders for our organization and the entire Hampton Roads community. At this point in the League year, we are looking toward the future as our Nominating Committee prepares to select next year’s League leaders. The JLNVB embraces the self-nominating process whereby our members choose the path of servant leadership. The Junior League is about growing leaders and each of you has the potential to lead the JLNVB forward. Ready to use your training, skills, and experiences to take on the challenges and joys of leadership? I encourage each of you to apply for the 2014-2015 Board of Directors. You may be surprised by what will come out of your courageous leap into leadership! The JLNVB’s impact on Hampton Roads is immeasurable. We continuously meet the Improving Communities component of our mission through member’s work to directly and indirectly impact the lives of people in Hampton Roads. We continue to have a significant role in improving our communities through work with organizations, such as CHKD, the Foodbank, ForKids, Inc., Excellence Girls’ Club, YWCA, and Park Place Child Life Center and our signature events, Kids in the Kitchen and Little Hands, Big Difference. Our member’s volunteer efforts help provide Hampton Roads families with safe and secure shelter, food, and medical services. We contribute to helping children achieve academic success, healthier lifestyles, an understanding of and appreciation for philanthropy, and so much more! This is possible because League members, sponsors, and community partners take action to make a difference. It is an honor to serve an organization with a legacy such as ours. I am thankful for the opportunity to have met and learned from so many wonderful League members. The women of the JLNVB selflessly offer so much of themselves to our community, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year. While we take time with our families and consider the blessings in our lives, I am thankful for all of you and what the JLNVB has accomplished because of your hard work and dedication to our mission. I appreciate your time, energy, and contributions as you share your gifts with the League and all of Hampton Roads.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday,

Laura Bangor

JLNVB Provisional of the Month for October JLNVB Recognizes April Mann Over the past month few months, April Mann has been instrumental in the coordination of the Provisional Team Building Project. This project hosted over forty Provisional women as they volunteered a morning to painting and sprucing up YWCA transitional housing units for women. April has exceeded expectations. Community Council News Fall is upon us and League members have been in constant motion, working in the

community in a variety of settings. Ladies have provided assistance to the very busy Foodbank. They have been sorting numerous canned goods to help as the holidays are quickly approaching. We also kicked off this busy season with providing a warm comfort meal to the Ronald McDonald House families. Many women worked with St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children at their Fall Mile for Movement. Mary Helen Hilton, their Director of Annual Giving wrote, “Thank you to all of our wonderful Junior League volunteers who came to help us! Everyone was full of smiles and eager to help. We really do appreciate your support of this community event.” As always, our members have not just shown up to work community events, but they arrived with an exuding attitude of helpfulness and excitement. This is what makes us unique! Our community partners share their appreciation often for the opportunity to have such capable and exceptional women from Junior League assist them in their events. I am fortunate to be on the receiving end of these compliments and, most importantly, want all of you to know what an impression you make on our community. With the holidays arriving just around the corner, we will be tirelessly working on food and clothing drives, party assistance, and ensuring our partners have the supplies they need to give families a happy holiday. As you continue to volunteer at these events, remember the gift you bring to each of these organizations we work with. You are valued and appreciated for the sacrifices you make to give back during this busy time of year.

Thank you!! Abbe Malone, 2013-2014 Community Vice President Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

JLNVB Cookbook Recipe of the Month Hello, ladies of the Junior League, hope you are all doing well and gearing up for the holidays! This is my favorite time of year, I love all of the wonderful food and especially the sweet treats. This month I picked several recipes that would work at various times throughout the holidays. The “Hot Spiked Cider” would be a great beverage to serve after an evening enjoying the holiday lights at the Botanical Gardens, Garden of Lights. The “Ham & Goat Cheese Strata” would be a great use of Christmas Eve Ham for a Christmas morning breakfast. It is always good to have cookies on hand to give to neighbors that stop by unexpectedly or to take as a last minute hostess gift. The “Molasses Ginger Snap” recipe makes 60 cookies so it provides you with good number of cookies to create a number of cookie plates. Hope you have time to try some of these recipes during the holiday season. For this edition of TIDEings, I decided to try the “Pumpkin Pecan Pie” from the Toast to Tidewater cookbook. I love to bake throughout the year, but I especially love to bake during the holidays. It is such a joy and pleasure to share with my family and friends the traditional recipes from my childhood as well as the new recipes that I have decided to try for the year. This pie is a new recipe for me that is sure to become a repeated favorite. The pie was easy to assemble; the best part is that I did not have use a mixer. I was able to assemble the pie with use of a mixing bowl and hand held whisk, how easy is that? Essentially, you make a traditional pumpkin pie and add a delectable crunchy pecan topping. Not only did the pie taste wonderful, it made my home smell like the holidays with the cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. The other great thing about this pie is that the majority of the ingredients are on sale at this time of year. Most of the grocery stores have spices on sale at this time of year and I was able to find canned pumpkin 10 for $10! You should definitely give this “Pumpkin Pecan Pie” recipe a try not only was it a quick and easy dessert, it is sure to please whomever is lucky enough to be served this tasty sweet treat! Happy Cooking! Erika Massie

P.S. You can purchase a JLNVB cookbook at the monthly GMM or online: http://www.jlnvb.org/junior-league-cookbooks/

Little Hands, Big Difference The JLNVB partnered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia at Pembroke Mall for the third annual Little Hands, Big Difference event. This event is designed to show our children the importance of giving back to the community. The children made fall crafts, played bean bag toss, exercised with hula hoops and other fun games. The kids gathered and sorted numerous kid friendly foods that were purchased and collected by the JNLVB through donations. After sorting the food into large bins, the children loaded the bins in wagons, and then delivered the food to the 17th Annual Mayflower Marathon Food and Fund Drive which filled Foodbank shelves for the holidays. Over 70,000 people in Hampton Roads are struggling with food shortages on a daily basis. The Foodbank provides nutritious canned, boxed, fresh, frozen, and prepared food to hundreds of thousands in need each year. Realizing the JNLVB’s contribution to the Foodbank and the people it serves and teaching children the joy and value of helping others is our greatest gift this holiday season.

Kudos to JLNVB Little Leaguers Recognizing children and teens related to JLNVB members that embody the spirit of the Junior League. Sarah and Lewis Proffitt both love to volunteer in the community with JNLVB member Erika Haws. Sarah volunteered at Charity Kicks with Erika August, filling goodie bags and greeting the children who were attending the event. Both Sarah and Lewis also volunteered at the Tidewater Military Family Festival. Sarah helped set up and hand out stickers while Lewis helped place stickers in books, move books, and place books on the table for children to pick up. Earlier this year, Sarah assisted the Larchmont Elementary School as a volunteer. At the Race at Twilight, she sold raffle tickets. During the ODU homecoming parade, she assisted children with decorating their car float and supervising the children as they marched in the parade. Sarah is a junior at Maury High School this year and is a member of the Swim Team, Chamber Orchestra, and National Honor Society. Sarah is also a member of the Music Education Learning Team as a student teacher, leader, and mentor for younger chamber orchestra students. Sarah intends to travel to Europe in spring 2014 as an exchange student. When Lewis is not volunteering in the community, he enjoys building things, riding his bike, walking Henry the Greyhound, and watching Duck Dynasty.
