President’s Message According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States - triple the rate from just one generation ago. In Hampton Roads, we share in the obesity epidemic and the Junior League’s commitment to do something about it. The Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen program, now in its 7th year, is teaching kids and their parents about the importance of eating healthy foods and involving them in the fight against childhood obesity. Kids in the Kitchen is a hands-on event that was developed to help promote child health and wellness by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices. Kids in the Kitchen programs take place in more than 200 communities and in four countries. In cities as varied as Los Angeles, Calgary, Mexico City, and London, the program’s common denominator is committed volunteers teaching kids and their parents about the importance of healthy food choices. At its inception, the JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen program was a classroom-style event with approximately 30 children and a handful of community partners including Richard Harris, CHKD, Farm Fresh and Jim White. Our program has grown to a half-day event with over 300 children and their parents participating with over 40 vendors offering health related presentations, demonstrations, and activities. The JLNVB is directly impacting young lives through this signature event. We are providing parents with resources and guidance on healthier meal preparation and exercise and wellness tips. The JLNVB is laying the foundation for a healthier lifestyle for the entire family. I want to thank our lead sponsors - Pembroke Mall, Richard Harris and Jim White - for their valued partnership with the JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen program. I invite each of you to join us at the 7th annual Kids in the Kitchen community event on March 23rd from 11-3. Together, we can continue to make a difference and impact children’s health and wellness in Hampton Roads.

Best Wishes,

Melissa Steadman 2012-2013 President Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

The first Healthy Kids Club was held on February 6 and two 30-minute classes are offered every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. League members are on hand at each class to help out and collect donations. All proceeds benefit our organization. To register, call 422-0444 or email VABEvents@wholefoods.com. Please put the event name, date and time in the subject line of your email. This is a highly sought out community event and space is limited to 10 children per class, so reserve your spot today! Babes in arms or strollers are welcome to sit with caregivers.

REACH

On February 10, the League hosted a book drive for REACH at Café Stella. We collected over 200 new and used children’s books! Thank you to all members who supported with your volunteer hours and generous donations. REACH is a volunteer organization that supports the literacy needs of homeless and at-risk children living in shelters throughout the South Hampton Roads community. The REACH Read Aloud program serves twelve area homeless and domestic violence family shelters in all of the cities of Southside Hampton Roads.

Care by Community

On February 13, JLNVB members hosted a Valentine’s Day party for 30 elementary school students in grades K through fifth. The students participate in Care by Community, an after-school program for homeless and “at-risk” children at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. JLNVB volunteers provided beverages, healthy strawberry shortcakes that the students got to make themselves, supplies to make Valentine’s Day cards, and a paper fortune teller game. Many of the students had second helpings of the strawberries and enjoyed decorating the cards so much that they decorated the backs of the cards, too! In addition to all the fun Valentine’s Day activities, members also helped the students with their homework.

Healthy Recipes for Kids

From HealthyKids.org

Confetti Quinoa Note: If you don’t have quinoa, substitute brown rice or whole-wheat couscous, but be sure to adjust the cook time as needed. PREP TIME: 20 Minutes INGREDIENTS: • 1 1/2 cups low-sodium vegetable stock or water • 1 cup quinoa, thoroughly rinsed and drained • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 cup frozen chopped, mixed vegetables such as peas, carrots, green beans, corn EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES: • Medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid • Measuring cups • Measuring spoons • Fork DIRECTIONS: 1. Add vegetable stock or water to medium saucepan. 2. With an adult’s help, bring stock or water to a boil over medium-high heat. 3. Stir in quinoa, salt, and pepper. 4. Switch heat to low and cover pot with lid. 5. Cook until liquid is evaporated and quinoa is tender, about 15 minutes. 6. Remove lid and stir in veggies with a fork. 7. Place lid back on quinoa so that the heat from the quinoa cooks the vegetables. 8. Serve immediately or place into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days. HOW MUCH DOES THIS RECIPE MAKE? Serves 4 (consider making a double batch to serve for dinner and lunches)

07

Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

Grilled Veggie Pita Note: Grill extra veggies at dinnertime so you’ll have some on hand for sandwiches and salads. They will keep refrigerated in a tightly sealed container for up to a week. Get an adult’s help with the part of this recipe that requires a food processor. PREP TIME: 5 Minutes INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 cup low-fat cream cheese or any other low-fat spreadable cheese • 1 teaspoon chives, chopped • 1 teaspoon parsley • 3-4 cups leftover grilled veggies (we like carrots, eggplant, and zucchini) • 4 whole-wheat pitas EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES: • Food processor • Butter knife (for spreading) DIRECTIONS: 1. Spread 1-2 tablespoons of herbed cream cheese onto the inside of each pita. 4. Stuff each pita evenly with grilled veggies. HOW MUCH DOES THIS RECIPE MAKE? Serves 4

Exercising as a Family Kids in Motion

From HealthyKids.org By the time they reach high school, 64% of children are no longer physically active. Why? If your kids fall within this group, you don’t have to sadly shake your head. You can set a good example, be a role model, and do the right things so your kids will, too. Get off the couch and get on a bike with your kids. Introduce them to exercise that’s fun. Eat healthy. Instead of high-calorie foods and snacks, turn to fruits and other healthy foods. And once you get kids moving in the direction of fitness, chances are they’ll keep going for the rest of their lives.

Start ‘em Young

Becoming a healthy adult starts with being a healthy child. Many chronic diseases of adulthood have their beginnings in childhood. For example, it is important for kids to build strong bones, so that by the time they’re in their 20s, their peak bone density will be higher and their risk of osteoporosis will be decreased. There are also childhood diseases that can easily be prevented by proper diet and physical activity. Children can suffer from diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure—these aren’t just adult ailments. An hour of physical activity per day is recommended for children. It is also recommended that screen time (TV and computer time) be limited to two hours per day. Children who are fit can avoid the above health problems. They also do better in physical-performance tests. They have a stronger selfimage, more self-confidence, less anxiety and stress and they demonstrate greater improvement in skill- and health-related fitness. When you consider the facts, it makes good sense to encourage physical activity when your children are young. Parents, teachers and fitness professionals all have a role to play. Each can help kids think positively about exercise and motivate them to make regular physical activity a lifetime pursuit.

09

Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

Mom and Dad Are the Best Motivators As a parent, it’s up to you to play the biggest part—bigger than a teacher, more important than a fitness professional. Your children look to you for examples on how to talk, dress, act and lead a physically active—or inactive—life. Set a good example for your kids. Instead of spending the evening in front of the television, find some activity that will keep you moving. In warm weather, bike outdoors. If it’s too cold, get a stationary bike, a treadmill or a trampoline. And it’s never too late or too early to help your kids build strength and endurance. Push-ups and pull-ups are an excellent way to build upper-body strength. Jungle gyms and monkey bars are great for kids because they utilize their own body weight. And they’re loads of fun. Make sure your kids have the proper protective equipment, such as helmets and knee, elbow and wrist pads. Also make sure the athletic equipment they’re using is the proper size for them. You wouldn’t want to swing a bat as tall as you, so buy equipment to fit each child. Keep in mind that kids are not always naturally limber and that their muscles may be tight and vulnerable to injury during the growth spurts that occur during the elementary years. Be sure to include stretching as a part of your fitness activities. Make sure that you concentrate on the positive aspects of exercise. It’s a chance for a family to be together, to share good times, and have fun. Avoid competition, discipline and embarrassment— things that can turn good times into moments of dread. Praise your children for trying. Encourage their interest in other sports and other activities, which will help them take ownership of their fitness.

It’s Really up to You You can’t tell kids that being active is fun. You have to show them. So take your kids hiking, biking, dancing, sledding, swimming, and in-line skating. Skip rope or shoot baskets with them. Plan outings and activities that involve walking, like a trip to the zoo or the park, a nature trail hike or even a walk through the mall. Remember: If you want your kids to be healthy, happy teens and adults, it’s up to you to do something about it.
