president’smessage WELCOME MAT EXECUTIVE BOARD

It has been an exciting fall filled with POWER shifts, a fun Sustainer Dinner and another successful Vintage in the Valley event. Our members are hard at work running the League and making an impact in Dayton. As we enjoy this busy holiday and winter season I hope we all take the time to give thanks for another great year of making a difference with the greatest women in Dayton. I know I counted all of you in my blessings at my Thanksgiving table. A letter should have hit your mailbox with details on how you can contribute to this year’s Annual Giving Campaign. This campaign raises muchneeded funds that enable us to continue the great momentum of the League so that we may continue giving back to Dayton. I hope you will join me in making a contribution!

The Holiday Hunt is a free scavenger hunt for children ages 2 to 12. This is a favorite holiday family tradition for many Dayton families and we served well over 1,000 kids this year. We changed the format of the Hunt this year to better match our new area of focus in the League. Our Learning Through Health initiative focuses on literacy, healthy eating, and staying active. The pilot program will launch this summer in partnership with ReadySetSoar/Learn to Earn Dayton, Public Health - Dayton and Montgomery County, and the Dayton Metro Library. Instead of the usual scavenger hunt that included stopping by various surrounding merchants to collect trinkets, kids were treated to three main stops that include themes of literacy, crafting, and a healthier treat. Each stop location had other exciting events as well that the kids could take in as they completed our Hunt. At the literacy stop in the Schuster Center, the kids had an opportunity to fill out six huge portfolio poster-size community cards. Parents and kids alike filled out the cards with topics that asked their goals in 2016, favorite holiday traditions, favorite part of winter, and what they were most thankful for. Kids could also participate in a reading circle that featured over 10 different rotating winter-themed stories.

COMMUNICATIONS Meets monthly on the third Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. Locations vary. Contact communications@jldayton.org. The Communications Council beefed up its social media presence this fall, completed a successful marketing and media campaign to promote Vintage in the Valley and continued to transmit league news to new members, actives and sustainers through print and electronic outlets. New this year is the JLD Leaguer List Facebook group, a place where new members, actives and sustainers can connect about non-league topics, as well as league-related news. Our main Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages are kept current with the latest information about the JLD. The Dayton Daily News and the Living Dayton daytime talk show featured Vintage in the Valley on Nov. 6. Ads also ran in the Dayton Daily News, Dayton Parent, Dayton Magazine and WNKU-FM. Communications Council also led league participation in The Dayton Foundation’s #spreadthegood social media campaign. Although the JLD didn’t finish in the top three in shares to win a grant, our members helped raise awareness of our many community initiatives. In 2016, Communications Council members look forward to spreading the word about more league events and community programs, notably the literacy initiative launching this summer. Here’s to a great 2016!

The Kettering Tower included a snowman craft table along with a stop for a special snowflake crunch treat for the kids. The kids were rewarded at the completion of the Hunt with a free hardback book.

Holiday Happenings The holiday season is the perfect time of year to kick back and celebrate all that we’ve accomplished in 2015 as a League! This year, we spent a festive December evening mingling at Dayton Country Club. We couldn’t have held the party without the support of Meghan Ewing. Thank you, Meghan, for securing the event space and planning this year’s party! The club was festive, fun and filled with over 40 Leaguers from new members to sustainers. It was the perfect setting to mix, mingle and meet many of the Leaguers’ significant others and friends. We had such a great evening that we definitely plan on hosting another holiday celebration in 2016. Be watching for next year’s date as we roll out 2016-17 league plans!

MOVIN’ ON UP After a six-month search process, the Strategic Planning Team has announced a new office location for the Junior League of Dayton, effective Jan. 1, 2016. We’ll be relocating from our current space at 6382-A Far Hills Ave. to a suite on the sixth floor of Liberty Tower, 120 W. Second St., in downtown Dayton.

Features of the space — which is undergoing custom renovations and receiving new paint and carpet — include: • Twice as much square footage for nearly half the monthly cost, with utilities included; • The ability to accommodate small committee meetings to large General Membership Meetings and recruitment events;

We are excited for the League to again have a presence downtown and be within a mile of many of our longtime community partners and project sites,” said Audrey Starr, president-elect and Strategic Planning chair. “The JLD exists to strengthen and support Dayton, and this move helps us continue that legacy.” A formal ribbon-cutting and open house will be held once the move is complete (details to come). In the meantime, with more space comes the need for new or additional furniture. Cincinnati highlighted its successes in membership engagement, specifically developing special-interest groups. Their most popular groups are a book club and a monthly downtown lunch club. Finally, our emcee and keynote speaker, JuWon Choi, AJLI Director of Learning, shared AJLI’s new membership model encouraging leagues to transition to mutually beneficial membership contracts with each member based on their specific availability and talents.

CODE DAY 2015 Report

The 2015 CODE Day was an inspiring event filled with opportunities to connect with like-minded women driven to impact their communities. Together, we shared innovative best-practices and brainstormed new ideas. I learned so much more about what it means to be a member of the Junior League. It was an excellent experience and I cannot wait for the 2016 CODE Day in Cincinnati!

On Oct. 10, Junior League members from throughout the Kelly Kempton state of Ohio attended this year’s CODE (Connect Ohio Develop & Educate) Day, hosted by the Junior League of Website Coordinator Akron. Junior League of Dayton This was an excellent day of organizational development training that brought together members of the Ohio Junior Leagues to network, present our best-practices, and learn new capacity-building techniques. As the Junior League of Dayton’s representative, I highlighted our very successful community partnerships, specifically with ThinkTV for our innovative Kids in the Kitchen public service announcements and our latest collaboration with ReadSetSoar to support literacy in Dayton. I also emphasized JLD’s use of social media to communicate with the Dayton community, the development of our latest strategic plan, and the impressive results of our 2014-2015 New Member Book Drive. Our fellow Ohio leagues also offered many exciting and innovative successes. Akron shared its multi-entry point recruitment strategy. Their recruitment takes place 2-3 times per league year and their training is split into two “Super Saturdays.” This strategy has increased Active membership due to the flexibility of their recruitment schedule.

Favorite JLD memory: I loved being able to learn new marketing techniques and share the great stories of the League. #beJLD Favorite JLD memory: I have to pick just one? There are so many. The nonstop conversations on the way to/ from trainings like CODE Day (I’m pretty sure we solved all the world’s problems — or at least laughed all our problems out — during a four-hour car ride). Socializing before/after or — apologies to the recording secretaries — during meetings (“No, that doesn’t go in the minutes.”). Getting to know other members during the blood, sweat, tears and heavy lifting (shout-out to the ViV teams). So, pretty much anything that involves talking, bonding (and snacks).

“The JLD cookbooks were one of the first things I bought after moving to Dayton in 2012. They haven’t disappointed — I’ve made some great meals and learned a lot about the community while doing it.” —Audrey Starr (A)

Sara Jane’s Baked Apples “A totally delicious version of a Midwest favorite”. Yield: 6 servings 6 medium apples; red, yellow or combination 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Describe your perfect Saturday: A lot of productivity and a little relaxation, so catching up on chores, catching up on sleep, and catching up on a good book and something crafty. Add two cups of coffee and a Bill’s donut on the side.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Score skin around center of apples, wash and core. Place apples in a shallow baking dish. Fill hollow apple centers with the following layers: half the sugar, all of the butter, all of the cinnamon, remaining sugar. Sprinkle water over the tops of the apples. Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour, basting every 10-15 minutes. Recipe in “Causing A Stir,” Page 147, courtesy of Marty Ebeling (S)

Three Things you can’t live without: My to-do list, ‘90s music, monograms. Best restaurant in Dayton and why: I love Christopher’s in Kettering; they have the cutest cheese plate and they don’t rush you (even if you’ve been talking for, say, an hour). Favorite Graeter’s ice cream treat: Confession: I’ve been in Dayton three years and haven’t made it to Graeter’s yet (I KNOW). But, the Oreo sundae at Ritter’s is outstanding :). Best pizza in Dayton: Joe’s Pizzeria on Airway Road. Get the buffalo chicken. --Elsa Rodriguez (A)
