The Executive Board has been working tirelessly during the past few months to get the new Junior League of Dayton office ready for the April Open House. The new office not only provides much needed square footage but places the League in the center of the community we aim to support. As JLD President Kelly Geers told the Dayton Business Journal, “The location is also closer to the Junior League’s community partners, who are primarily downtown. It’s a strategic location for us. The majority of the partners we work with will be within a couple of blocks.”

That evening, an Open House for members only will take place from 5 - 7 p.m. League members should have received a formal invitation. Questions may be directed to Audrey Starr, president-elect, at audreystarr3@gmail.com or 937-416-3924

Community Council has had a successful partnership with ThinkTV for the Kids in the Kitchen campaign. That will continue this year, as members are working with ThinkTV executives for the next phase of the campaign exploring platforms of literacy development. New ads could be in the works, and we’d love to see our little Leaguers as stars. Look for more information on this initiative this summer and fall. —Missy Pharmer and Jessica Stickel

GMM HIGHLIGHTS TRAINING TIPS Webinar Wednesdays

Mark your calendars for these free training opportunities! Can’t make the airtime? Log in afterwards to hear an archived recording. Visit www.ajli.org to register. Webinar Wednesdays run from September to June, typically on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. (Eastern Time Zone).

MAY 18, 2016

DONE IN A DAY Despite the snowy weather, February’s Done in a Day was a great success. This year we volunteered for a number of organizations throughout Dayton, including - Dayton Metro Library - Homefull - Kettering Backpack Program - We Care Arts - Hannah’s Treasure Chest Together, we provided hundreds of hours of service to five area nonprofits. Great work!

Not that you need an excuse (see Membership Requirements, jldayton.org), but here are a few reasons you don’t want to miss our General Membership Meetings. Here are some highlights from recent meetings, and join us this summer for more! MARCH AND APRIL HIGHLIGHTS 1. Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 30, so that you don’t miss out on the annual JLD Run for the Health of It 5K/10K at Riverscape. 2. Don’t forget about the New Member Book Drive! The goal is to collect at least 1,000 new and gently used books to donate to local children (and their school). Find a wish list from the New Member Committee on Amazon. Monetary donations are also welcome.

Intergenerational Solutions For Building Stronger Communities featuring Donna M. Butts, Executive Director, Generations United And, for your listening/viewing pleasure, be sure to peruse the Webinar Wednesday archive, where you can catch past Webinar Wednesday guests, including Gloria Feldt, bestselling author and one of Vanity Fair’s America’s Top 200 Leaders, Legends and Trailblazers; Rich Harwood, founder of the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation; Diana Aviv, former head of Independent Sector; and a multitude of Junior League civic leaders including Anne McDonald Milling, September Hill, Ariel Batungbacal, MariBen Ramsey and Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, among others.

3. A formal discussion and questions were answered during the March GMM regarding a motion to revise the bylaws to reflect an updated annual schedule. The GMM motion struck out the original Junior League bylaws and replaced it with, “Regular Meetings shall be held from June to May at the hour and place as designated by and disseminated by the Executive Board.” A vote was taken and the motion was passed. 4. City of Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley spoke in March about her education initiatives. Whaley is excited about a program she is promoting that provides children from low- income families the opportunity to pick 10 books to read during the summer. Whaley said “If you can get 10 books to every child in pre-K through third, that’s a best practice — it gets books in the kids’ hands, it helps stop the summer slide.”
